QuoteMariners pitcher Cliff Lee has left the team and flown back to Seattle. He arrived in Seattle at 2:10 Pacific time. We don't know why yet and are trying to find out, though GM Jack Zduriencik would only say that this is not a personal matter.
When I asked Zduriencik whether this had to do with his suspension and a possible appeal hearing, or perhaps a medical reason, he would only say: "I can't comment at this time.''
If it was a medical reason, Zduriencik would have to get clearance from Lee under federal HIPPA statutes in order to comment.
It's entirely possible this is just a follow-up exam on his recent foot surgery, so I don't want to alarm anybody by putting this out there. But Lee was seen by plenty of people getting on a plane today and I just wanted you to know he is no longer in camp.

yes. it was actually talked about in the media quite a bit after the trade happened last year. i remember reading several articles from different outlets talking about how his career was sidetracked due to repeated stints on the dl to deal with it, including a few years ago when he missed the first 6 weeks of the season because of it.

Quote"They're the two clubs that don't try to pick up the pace," said West, the chief of the umpiring crew working the three-game series, according to the report. "They're two of the best teams in baseball. Why are they playing the slowest?
"It's pathetic and embarrassing. They take too long to play," he said, according to the report.
This was infuriating.
QuoteThe occasionally slow pace of the game has gotten baseball's attention before. After Game 4 of last year's World Series, in which Yankees catcher Jorge Posada walked to the mound to visit CC Sabathia eight times in a single inning, MLB vice president of umpiring Mike Port said frequent mound meetings by all teams would likely be discussed during the offseason.
So, the MLB did absolutely nothing, right? Nice work by them as usual.
yeah, it was driving me farging nuts. but batters in the box are just as guilty. nomar garciaparra (who i've been a fan of overall) is one of the most annoying people i've ever watched at the plate. after every pitch, he'd step out of the box and do this thing with the velcro strap on his batting gloves where he'd open/close/open/close/open/close on one hand and then the other.
he's far from the only one because most players have some stupid ritual they have to go through when they step in the box and then between every pitch. farging annoying as all hell. get in the box and farging stay there until your ab is over.
Lenny Dykstra

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5068451
on pitchers:
QuoteBack in Aaron's day, it was rare for batters to charge mounds. Now, hitters sometimes glare if a pitch is even a baseball card's width inside.
As he watches these days, Aaron misses the dominating pitchers of his era.
"Most of those pitchers, when they got into the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, they didn't look back and see who was warming up in the bullpen. They usually could finish what they started. And so I was happy to know that I played in that era where those guys were able to do those things," he said. "Pitching has changed. I think that if you talked to the average manager and want to know what his philosophy is as far as pitching, he'll tell most of his pitchers before the season starts, 'You give me five good innings and I can bring somebody out there to relieve you."
gives his 2 cents on the length of games and is spot on:
QuoteThe biggest annoyance is the length of games.
"It bothers me one inning can last, I don't know, 25 minutes or 30 minutes, when they keep bringing relief pitchers out and the catchers keep going out talking. That bothers me more than anything."
Stepping out is another pet peeve.
"They're supposed to be in the batters' box and be ready to hit," he said. "And the pitchers ought to be ready to pitch."
and on the designated hitter:
QuoteHe'd also like to see the designated hitter expand to the National League: "It ought to be uniform."
that one was a bit suprising. most people are either for keeping things as the are (which i am...i like the subtle differences between the nl and al) or people are in favor of getting rid of it altogether. i think he's the first person i've heard say he wants the dl in both leagues.

it definitely makes sense, no doubt about that. pitchers will never be effective hitters at the ml level unless they start playing like they did in high school where they pitch and then play another position in the field when they aren't on the mound. because at least that way, they are getting to the plate every day. but at the ml level, there's no way a pitcher will ever look comfortable at the plate when he gets 2 or 3 ab's every 5th day.
but like i said, i like the subtle differences between the al and nl because it forces managers to employ different strategies during interleague and ws play. to me, it makes those interleague match ups a little more interesting.

No. 6: "I must not tell the world I'm Iron Man."
No. 5: "This is something they can never take away from me. But for $50,000, you can have my glove."
No. 4: "This next pitch, eyes closed."

Yeah, I'm sure there had to be some games at the Vet in the late 90's that had awful attendance for a weeknight game, especially if it was against a less than attractive opponent. From 2000-06, the Phils were a .500ish team, so they weren't exactly horrible enough to drive crowds away. And attendance probably got a little extra nudge in 03 during the Vet's final season and then a huge boost in 04 when CBP opened.
Of course, now that they've got a great stadium and a great team on the field, last night was their 59th consecutive sell out.

QuoteHanley Ramirez won't apologize to Florida Marlins teammates, lost "little bit" of respect for manager
by Joe Capozzi
Here's the latest on the Hanley saga...
Wes Helms, Florida's veteran clubhouse leader, says Hanley Ramirez needs to apologize to his teammates for dogging it on a play last night. Hanley told reporters he has no plans to apologize.
But Ramirez said he is angry about being benched. And he has lost some respect for manager Fredi Gonzalez.
"It's his team. He does whatever he (expletive) wants," Ramirez said. "There's nothing I can do about it. It's brutal."
Asked about his ankle, he said: "That's OK. He doesn't understand that. He never played in the big leagues."
Some other highlights from this morning.
Do you want some time to get past it?
"For what?"
To talk to Fredi.
"Who's that?"
Your manager.
"Oh yeah? I'm just gonna play the game..."
Did you lose respect for Fredi?
"A little bit. We got 24 more guys out there. Hopefully they can do the same things I do. They're wearing the Marlins uniform.''
Do you plan to apologize to the team?
"To who?"
One of your teammates suggested an apology might be good if you did that.
"Do what?"
Apologize.
"For what?"
They thought that you were dogging it chasing that ball.
"We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls. They don't apologize.''
Are you playing today?
"I don't think so. I don't know when I'm going to be back on the field.''
You feel you're healthy enough to play today?
"No."
Mentally or physically?
"Both."
I don't think we've ever seen you this angry before.

"I wasn't trying to give up. That was the hardest I could go after the ball. "
You know how fast you are. Because people watching on TV might not think you were going as fast as you could have.
"That's fine. I can't control what you can think about that. I can only control what I can do on the field. I know some people are gonna think I gave up, some people will think he was a little bit hurt."
Is it this one incident or are the several incidents through the years?
"A couple, a couple."
Do you respect Fredi?
"I respect everybody. But I don't know if I get the same respect back."
Does it hurt you to hear some of the things he said?
"I haven't heard anything but I got a couple of phone calls they told me. It's fine. I don't want to hear what he says ... Hopefully, I keep talking to my kids. They don't keep me down. I'll forget this and go forward."
Another view
Here's what clubhouse leader Wes Helms said....
Helms has never seen a player dog it like that. He said Hanley said nothing to anyone on the team after he was taken out of the game.
"Everybody is entitled to have a bad day, no matter who you are. Everybody has a bad day. But I don't think a bad day comes from not hustling. That can't be stood for. When you're having a bad day, you can still hustle.
"To just flat-out not hustle, that's one of the things, I can't cope with that. That's one of my pet peeves. I can't stand two things in baseball: Guys who don't hustle and guys who don't work. We're trying to go to the World Series here. We've got to have all 25 guys on the same path.
"I can't overlook it. I know people say that's just the way he is. But you know what? That's not the way it is. That's not the way the game's supposed to be played. And that's what we want from Hanley.
"We want him to be that guy that goes out there everyday and we can sit back and says that's who he is – he's the one who goes out there everyday and busts his but and does anything he can for this team. That right there will earn the respect of not only his teammates but everybody in the league."
Does he have to come in here and apologize to everybody?
"It would be good. I know I would. It would be good to hear it from him.
"I was in Atlanta when the (John) Rocker thing went on. He was made to do the apology , but when he apologized to the whole team and held a 30-minute meeting, it gives you a little sense of easement. Kind of puts it to rest a little bit. Because right now when you don't hear that, there's still anger built up inside of you.
"One of the best things to cure anybody is to talk about it. It would be nice. It would be."
Get.

3000 hits
500 2b
100 3b
250 hr
400 sb
which brings up the hof question...in no way shape or form do i think hes a hof'er but how do you keep him out at that point
You argued like a little girl about Chipper Jones being a HOF player but you don't think a guy with those stats should be one.
Awesome.
when did i argue about chipper jones being in the hall of fame...i dont remember that at all
but he should definitely be in over damon...not only does he pass the look test as a hall of famer but his position puts him in...when you are one of the best ever at a particular position it helps out greatly

I wouldn't say it's "very possible" for Damon to get to 3000 hits. I'd say he has an outside shot at best. He's 36 years old (will be 37 later this year) and currently has 2464 hits, so he still need a little more than 500 to get to 3000. He's only had 200+ hits in a season once in his career and that was all the way back in 2000 with KC. Also, hasn't had more than 170 hits in a season since 2005 and hasn't played more than 150 games in a season since 2004. In fact, since 2005 he's averaging 159 hits per year. At that pace, it would take him about 3.5 years to get to 3000, at which point he would be 40 years old. And given the decline in production over the last 4 years, it's safe to assume that there would only be more of a drop off over the next 4 as well.
But, for the sake of argument, let's say that Damon does get to 3000. Is he HOF material? In my opinion, no. It's hard to overlook those numbers, but imo, his stats are more of a product of longevity rather than skill. Damon is a fine player, but during his 15 years the bigs, he's only been to 2 AS games and has never led the league in any of the Triple Crown caterogies (Although in 2000 he did lead the league in Runs and Stolen Bases). Even his best hitting year in 2000 (.327 BA) was only good enough for 10th best in the AL (although a few years later he did finish 4th with a signifcantly lower BA). In his prime, he was a good CF but not great. Most importantly (IMO) he's never been an MVP caliber player. In 2005 he finished 13th with 3% of the vote and that was the highest of his career (Only 2 other times did he receive any votes at all).
In short, he's been a very good player throughout his career than damn near every team would love having on their roster, but not quite worthy of the HOF.
You guys are too much. 3,000 hits = Hall of Fame, period.
We're not talking about inflated power numbers. We're talking about base hits which are just as hard to come by in this era as they have been over the past 100 years.
3000 hits over what would amount to be about a 19 year career = 158 hits per year. Not overly impressive. He's got a .288 career BA and only cracks the top 100 all time in Doubles, Triples and Stolen Bases and doesn't make the top 50 all time in any category except facial hair.
Also, assuming it takes him about 4 more years to get there, that's approximately 2200 more at bats which would give him roughly 10,700 career at bats. Only Rickey Henderson and Cal Ripken Jr would have taken more at bats to get 3000 hits and neither one of them needed to reach 3000 hits in order to go to the HOF.
HOF is for the best players of all time and Damon isn't even among the best players of his era. His lack of being a statistical leader in any single category over a sustained period of time, AS appearances or MVP consideration speaks volumes about how he's viewed in comparison to his peers.
Like I said, good player who everyone wants on their team, but not great. If there was a "Hall of Almost HOF Worthy" then Johnny Damon would be 1st ballot.

Glaus single
Hinske single

LOL
What do five man rotations have to do with anything? Guys still throw 90-100 mph just like they did 50 years ago. They still throw exploding off-speed pitches. They still play nine inning games. A player who hits for .300 in a season (meaning failure 7 out of 10 times) is typically an all-star.
Nothing has changed at all other than the fact that there's air travel and the accomodations are better.
It's still hard as hell to hit a baseball same as it was from 1900 to 1970 and guys that get 3,000 of them are dead-bang HOF's unless their last name is Rose.
And LMFAO at the same guy who insists that football players before 1970 don't compare to the ones playing today, yet uses the complete opposite "logic" to defend a completely indefensible position.
You really are something, IGY.

not that he needs it
They DFA'd him a few days ago I think.
not sure what that has to do with anything but yes they did
Other than the fact that when they DFA'd him, it was pretty much a given that he was going to ultimately get released, I suppose it doesn't have anything to do with it.
the pension isn't something the team in on the hook for, is it? i thought it came from the union. if so, it's kind of a fleshpop move to do that to him.
im sure he will be able to get by with the 75 million dollars hes made over the last 9 years and 364 days

QuoteJames A. Joyce III aka farging Jew(October 3 1955 - June 2, 2010) is the very worst umpire in Major League Baseball who has worked in the American League (AL) from 1987 to 1999 and throughout both major leagues since 2000. He attended Bowling Green State University. He wears uniform number 66 (he wore uniform number 6 while in the American League). His strike call is extremely loud and enthusiastic, similar to that of now-retired umpire Bruce Froemming.
Joyce has umpired in the All-Star Game (1994 and 2001), the Division Series (1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2003), the League Championship Series (1997, 2004, 2006), and the World Series (1999 and 2001). After graduating from Bowling Green State University in 1977, he umpired in the Midwest League (1978-1979), the Florida Instructional League (1978), the Texas League (1980), the Pacific Coast League (1981-1986, 1988), the International League (1987), and the Dominican League (1983).
Joyce was the second base umpire when Nolan Ryan recorded his 5,000th career strikeout and was the first base umpire when Robin Yount reached his 3,000th hit.
On June 2, 2010, Joyce blew a call at first base which would have given Armando Galeragga of the Detroit Tigers a perfect game*[1]

What, your remote thumb broken?
Gallarraga of Detroit had a perfect game, ninth inning, two outs.
Jason Donald hits one that Cabrera gets, but has to throw to Gallarraga covering. Donald is beaten by a half-step, foot clearly on the bag.
Umpire flinches, then calls Donald safe. Should have been the last out of a perfect game.
grounder to Cabrera, fielded cleanly, throw to Galarraga covering 1st, caught the ball with his foot on the base, Donald was a half step away.....called safe by Jim Joyce
Cabrera kept yelling at Joyce afterwards, then after a groundout to end the game, several players went after Joyce as he walked off the field

That was a hell of a lot closer than this play. And the Cardinals could still shut the Royals down, but didn't.
I agree with Igy, this call was way worse, in that the damage was irreparable and was the last farging out of a perfect game. Just not in nearly as big a game.
Whats crazy is even if that is a bang bang play, he's still has to ring up the runner. Anything close there you give the benefit of doubt to the guy tossing a perfecto.
But that wasn't even bang-bang. That was farging routine.

ESPN has ruined sports. It started with Favre and has branched out way too far and message boards and socialites across the globe have caught the disease.
If a rookie debut that features 14k and 0 walks isn't drool worthy, then I don't know what is. Yeah, ESPN goes overboard on way too many things, which is a shame because this kid is about as legit as they come but because ESPN over sensationalizes everything, it makes it far less effective for a story like this that is actually deserving of excessive coverage.
I hate the fact that he could own this division for the next 5 years until the Yankees sign him.
Drooling permitted after that performance. I had to do a double take when they said 14 K's in 7 innings. I'm sure once teams get a look at him he may not be as dominant but that was pretty amazing tonight.

at least he's consistent
Also he traded his wife and career for some kind of fat gollum.
QuoteThe Los Angeles Times reports that, for the last 5 years, the Dodgers have paid a 71-year-old Russian physicist named Vladimir Shpunt to direct positive energy waves at the team. This was kept secret from even top-level club officials, but came out as part of the acrimonious divorce proceedings between owners Frank and Jamie McCourt. Shpunt attended just one game at Dodger Stadium and normally worked while watching games on television from 3,000 miles away. We couldn't make this stuff up.

just watched the condensed game on MLB (which is great farging feature, btw) and that curve ball is insane.
Better than Blyleven or Palmer, which was the two best I've ever seen. This guy is on another level from any pitcher out there. He has amazing stuff made even more so by outstanding control. He can put any pitch he has wherever he wants.
Listen, I agree he has been incredible since his first start in the minors, but cmon guys - he's pitched one game in the bigs - against the second worst hitting team in baseball, and today he will face the worst. Comparing him to the all time greats already is about as premature as Toddy was with the first piece of Mexican meat he found in Texarkana.
why is the farging game on tbs blacked out?
because youre supposed to watch wheels and tmac
and i thought tbs was showing the strasburg game
they are...that's my point. it's washington/cleveland and it's blacked out
youre probably in that weird middle area where tbs thinks youre in the dc tv area but youre clearly in some hodunk philly burb like quakertown or souderton
i'm closer to NYC than DC
i understand that
but thats probably it. they black you out of broadcasts if youre a certain amount of miles away from one of the cities. sometimes a mistake might be made, but there are a bunch of people who are considered to be in blackout zones who dont get the local channels that are supposed to be watched instead.
blame the jews?
Comcast wasn't affected and saw the Nats/Indians game, but Verizon thought TBS was still showing Phils/Red Sox and blacked out the station the entire time the Phils were on. It came back when Lidge got the save, long after the Washington game ended. Dumb.....
the battle of bad Chicago baseball had dueling no-hitters in the 7th. Floyd gave up back-to-back hits, allowing the only run of the game. Lilly lost his in the 9th on a Pierre single, which ended up being their only hit...

im comparing him to the greats in terms of stuff...not accomplishments...and his curveball is the best ive seen since dwight gooden...overall his stuff is unmatched in baseball history that i personally have ever seen...i mean for god sakes he throws a mid 90's sinker and a low nineties high 80's change....no ones ever done that

Where's King Cole to remind us that Strasburg might or might not be excellent, good, fair or a bust again?
Florida fired Fredi Gonzalez and two coaches
I don't understand the move, but their owner isn't afraid to shtein can people.
All this does is allow him to chill until ATL hires him to take over for Bobby Cox.

Jason Giambi just murdered one to give the Rockies a walkoff. And saved Jimenez from his second loss, he gave up some runs tonight for a change.
Holy shtein.
lololol at the Dodgers.
1st and 2nd with 1 out.
Martin is at the plate and is 3-1. Fuentes whirls around and picks off Kemp at 2nd. Problem is that Fuentes clearly balked.
Martin walks...runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.
single to LF and Reed Johnson looks like he's going to score to tie it. LF throws to 2B and Russell Martin is caught off 2B before the run crosses the plate.
Angels win.
Kemp is the worst base runner in the history of baseball. Really...he's an idiot. He has no awareness or a sense of what is going on. Countless times he over runs bases...or puts himself in a bad situation. He's a farg up.
Angles alway find a way to kill the Dodgers. We can't beat that team. We.

Yup, career in Philly he was 73-63 (with one KO). For a hitting team, that's replaceable. The Phils put enough time into him, his curent performance feels more like a fluke than a breakout.
Other than Fat Joe, the starters have been fine most of the season anyway.
Plus Happ, Lee, and Pedro are coming back. ;)
Tampa Bay just got no-hit for the second time this year
Edwin Jackson does it against his former team, throwing almost 150 pitches (including 8 walks)
Is that 3 times in two years the Rays have been no hit?
150 pitches? Damn.
this has got to be the strangest year in baseball of this era
i wouldnt be surprised if it something like the rays, sox, yanks are all tied for the al east, the phils, braves and mets for the nl east, dodgers, rockies and giants for the nl west, etc winds up the season.
Edwin Jackson throwing a no-no is like Jose Jimenez, Bud Smith and Tommy Greene tossing one.
But if I remember right Greene had 10 walks when he threw his against the Expos.

jacksons no hitter contained the most pitches of any no hitter ever...by more than 10
jim maloney 10 and aj burnett 9 walked the most in a no no
Jackson's no-no had twice as many walks as Lee has for the entire season

Twins and Mariners are in discussions about a Lee deal.
Twins are offering top catching prospect Wilson Ramos and OF prospect Aaron Hicks
that's their top 2 prospects for a 3-month rental

NY Post reports Lee to be traded to Yankees for Jesus Montero and other prospects.
Hahaha... the ultimate insult.
Disgusting.
He's supposed to pitch against the Yankees tonight..could be interesting.
So Sabathia, Lee, Pettitte, Burnett & Hughes, huh?

4 teams in a year

Texas also gets $2.5M in the deal and they gave up their top position prospect in Justin Smoak, a former 1st-rd righty in Blake Beaven, and two marginal AA/AAA guys
I am just glad he isn't a Yankee.
Wow at them giving up Smoak. They were hyping him hard when he got called up
He's hitting .208 or something. Could be the next white choke dawg.

QuoteThe Yankees weren't pleased with the Mariners' last-minute decision to back away from what was believed to be an agreement to deal Lee to New York on Friday, according to the New York Post.
"The Yankees do not do business that way," a Yankees official told the newspaper. "When we say something is a deal, it is a deal. Yes, this is frustrating and disappointing."
The New York Post reported the Yankees believed they had a deal in place to acquire Lee on Thursday night. All that remained were the physical reports on Yankees prospects Jesus Montero, David Adams and Zach McAllister, all of whom would have been shipped to Seattle for Lee. When the Mariners expressed concern about Adams' injured ankle, however, the problems began. Seattle began to ask for different prospects, New York balked, and Seattle went back to Texas, which agreed to include Justin Smoak in a deal for Lee.
"I don't think 30 general managers would agree that what the Mariners did was real ethical," another Yankees official told the New York Post.
And a rival general manager echoed those sentiments. "It's disappointing to hear that Jack (Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik) shopped that around, that's not right," an executive from a team not directly involved in the Lee trade told the New York Post. "You don't do that with any team, and you don't do it with the Yankees, because (GM Brian) Cashman will drop you in a heartbeat. You don't use the Yankees because they never forget."
farg the yankees.
Yeah I'm sure the next time the Mariners have a Cliff Lee on the trading block, the Yankees won't be interested because they'll remember that Seattle was mean to them.

Cliff Lee getting slapped around tonight. It must have been rough on the poor SOB. Seattle yesterday morning, almost a Yankee by noon, end up in Arlington last night. "Oh, and Cliff by the way, can you pitch tomorrow night?"

And to get pimped by the Orioles...ouch.

It's unbecoming to just re-run an old blog post ... but really I cannot add much to this. You may have heard (but probably not) that Kansas City Royals starter Gil Meche will have shoulder surgery and is out for the season.
Meche had been rumored to be involved in potentially the most tragic baseball trade in the history of the world, a trade that might have involved Ollie Perez, Jeff Francoeur, Jose Guillen and Kyle Farnsworth. You should have to get a special dispensation from the Pope before making a trade involving all those guys.
Now, obviously, that won't happen. Meche is gone for the year and while approaching 32 with another year at $12 million left on his $55 million contract ... well, there's no telling where this will go. He has not been himself since the middle of last year. You usually cannot pinpoint disasters to one specific moment in time, but in this case you can pretty much pinpoint Meche's moment to the time he threw 132 pitches in a shutout against Arizona. Right after that game, Meche's arm began to feel dead. He insisted — INSISTED — that the 132 pitches had nothing to do with the deadness of his arm. But, he had two dreadful starts, then took a couple of extra days off to deal with it. Tendinitis? Muscle fatigue? He then returned to pitch against Minnesota in a game where everyone said he would be watched closely and kept on a conservative pitch count.
What followed was epic. Well, here's the material stuff from the blog post I wrote on July 2nd, one day after that start. The post was called "Stupid Is ..."
* * *
All of which takes us back to Wednesday. Gil Meche was pitching, and you may or may not know that Meche has been battling with a balky back and a dead arm this year. Even so, he has made 17 starts — he leads the American League in starts — because he has become what baseball people like to call a warrior.
Unfortunately, the warrior had been terrible his previous two outings — terrible, in fact, ever since (then Royals manager) Trey Hillman left him in to throw 132 pitches in a shutout against Arizona. I want to make clear here that this is NOT about pitch counts. Bill James and I wrote some about pitch counts already, and we both said that we are skeptical about the way teams use pitch counts now and we're open to Nolan Ryan's plan to extend pitchers. You could argue — pretty persuasively, I imagine — that having a pitcher who has been dealing with a stiff back throw 132 pitch might not be the wisest move ever. But hey, Meche is a grown-up, he insisted on staying in there, he finished the job, I would not second guess it.
BUT then that familiar pattern emerged one more time. Meche struggled badly his next start. And he struggled badly again his next time out. His velocity was down. He felt lousy on the mound. The Royals said he had a bit of "dead arm," which I'm pretty sure is not a modern medical term. To be blunt, that sounds like something John McGraw would have said. You had to wonder if the Royals planned to treat the "dead arm" with leeches and by drowning a witch.
But OK, hey, dead arm, and Meche (who also downplayed things — guy's a WARRIOR) said that maybe there was a little "built up tendinitis" and some "fatigue." He decided to take a couple of days off — not even pick up a baseball. Sounded like a wise thing to do. At first, there was some doubt if he would even make his Wednesday start, and frankly I have NO IDEA why the Royals would even let him make his Wednesday start. Skip a start, make sure he's OK, I mean it's not like the Royals are in the heat of a pennant race here.
But OK, Meche said he felt good after his two days off. And as Hillman said: "He'll know with his experience." Meche said he wanted to go Wednesday ... OK, let him go. "No reservations," Trey Hillman said. Pitching coach Bob McClure, a sensible soul, was a bit more cautious.
"I would say we'll probably monitor how many pitches we're going to let him throw," McClure said.
Well, sure. Of course. I mean, you wouldn't let a guy with a dead arm and bad back throw a lot of pitches. That's OBVIOUS, no? Meche went out and, good to see, his stuff looked pretty good. He was throwing in the low-to-mid 90s again. His curveball looked pretty sharp. He did walk five guys in five innings, and he did labor, and he did throw 99 pitches in those five innings which I think is probably a few more than you would want him to throw. But hey, he only allowed one earned run and the Royals were in the game and Meche seemed to be back on track ... Mission accomplished.
Only then ... Gil Meche walked out the mound to start the sixth inning.
I wanted to rub my eyes, you know, the way they do in the movies when they see a ghost or really beautiful woman. I looked back at my computer — yep, he'd thrown 99 pitches. I retraced my steps: Yes, Meche did say he had a dead arm, yes there was some stiff back issues, yes everyone said the Royals were going to be cautious, yes, check ... and then I looked back on the screen and there was Meche, or at least some guy with Meche's name on his jersey, on the mound. What? Gil Meche has two-and-a-half years left on his $55 million contract. Gil Meche was the Royals opening day starter. Gil Meche is absolutely one of the critical players if the Royals are EVER going to dig out of this hole ...
It couldn't be. Nobody would send Gil Meche out there. Nobody would do that. Nobody would do that. Nobody would do ...
On the second pitch of the inning (101st pitch overall) Carlos Gomez cracked a vicious double down the left-field line. Well, in a way, that was good. Carlos Gomez does not hit many vicious doubles ... surely now Hillman would come and take Meche out and end this preposterous ...
No. Meche stayed out there. He struck out Nick Punto. He got Denard Span to fly out on the first pitch of an at-bat (yay Denard!). So Meche had 105 pitches and might get out of this without it being a total disaster.
No sir. Matt Tolbert then worked Meche for an eight-pitch at-bat which led to a walk. Meche was now up to 113 pitches with two of the best lefty hitters in the American League — Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau — coming up. Well, yes, that was a disaster, but at least now Meche would get taken out of the game and ...
No. Meche stayed in to face Joe Mauer. It leads to one of the great questions of philosophy: At what point does idiotic become criminal? Jamie Quirk, who was color commentator on television, talked about how Meche wanted to stay out there. Well OF COURSE Meche wanted to stay out there, but that's why you have a MANAGER, someone who MANAGES to walk out to the mound and say, "Great effort Gil, but you know, I had to be insane to let you pitch the sixth inning in the first place, I have to get you out of here now."
But Meche stayed out there. He got ahead of Mauer 0-2, then threw a ball, then Mauer singled, scoring a run. Meche was up to 117 pitches now. Hillman finally went to the mound. We had driven past the lunacy exit about four miles back ... we were now in lawsuit territory. Could there be any explanation — ANY explanation — for pitching your wounded Opening Day starter 117 pitches?
Wait for it.
No, wait for it.
Hillman walked back to the dugout and left Meche in the game to face Morneau.
I don't know. Maybe at some point, when you're SO FAR down the wrong road, you just go: "What the hell, might as well keep going and hope we run into something good." Maybe it would have been more damaging to have Meche throw 117 pitches and then pull him before the inning was done. I don't know. I really don't know. We are in such la-la land here, there can be no logical questions ... these are like "How would you wash a unicorn?" questions. I do know that Meche threw four more pitches and did get Morneau to fly out to right.
And the final tally: Gil Meche, who four days earlier was not sure he was going to start, who three days earlier was going to be watched closely, who one day earlier was talking about how he hoped he had his velocity back ... threw 121 pitches. The explanation afterward seemed to be that Meche wanted to ... and his stuff was good. Or something.
* * *
Postscript: Since that day, Gil Meche is 2-6, 7.18 ERA, 51 walks, 49 strikeouts, 17 home runs and one season-ending shoulder surgery. Trey Hillman has been fired. And the Royals ... well, there's just not a whole lot to add, is there?
Anyone else bother to mention that Strasburg is "doubtful" to make his next scheduled start, which I believe happens to be against the Phillies?
That is good news - although a Hamels/Strasburg matchup would have been good TV.
I'm gonna be at that game and Strasburg's absence can suck it.
Its his shoulder, not good for a guy who throws as hard as he does, but i guess its better than elbow pain.
Don't worry about it. Miss Iowa may end up throwing out the first pitch to Miguel Batista. Then Jayson Werth will praying mantis her in the bullpen.

Absolute rip job by Passan on the Marlins owner.
Wow. Jeffrey Loria is a scumbag.
QuoteOwner Jeffrey Loria and president David Samson for years have contended the Marlins break even financially, the centerpiece fiscal argument that resulted in local governments gifting them a new stadium that will cost generations of taxpayers an estimated $2.4 billion. They said they had no money to do it alone and intimated they would have to move the team without public assistance.
In fact, documents show, the Marlins could have paid for a significant amount of the new stadium's construction themselves and still turned an annual operating profit. Instead, they cried poor to con feckless politicians that sold out their constituents.
The ugliness of the Marlins' ballpark situation is already apparent, and the building doesn't open for another 18 months. Somehow a team that listed its operating income as a healthy $37.8 million in 2008 alone swung a deal in which it would pay only $155 million of the $634 million stadium complex. Meanwhile, Miami-Dade County agreed – without the consent of taxpayers – to take $409 million in loans loaded with balloon payments and long grace periods. By 2049, when the debt is due, the county will have paid billions.
there is no taxpayer funded stadium in the united states that has been a good deal for taxpayers. it's a pure racket, as innumerable studies have proven. it taxes everybody to build playgrounds for the rich, it primarily benefits those rich, and to the extent they generate economic activity around the stadium (which is usually overblown anyway), they simply relocate it from other parts of the city. a complete scam.
After reading that is there any way that Loria, or any other executive who lied about cash flow and/or assets, can be charged with fraud?

I see that Regina Medina used the highly impartial sources of the City Controller and a senior VP of the Phillies to determine whether giving money to the Phillies was a good idea. Let's see if I can do the math she didn't bother to do.
from the article: $21.2 million*.26 + $43 million * .10 = $9.8 million per year in new tax revenue
Public funding of CBP = $174 million
If we assume:
1) All of the increased tax revenue is due to the Phillies
2) All of the increased Phillies revenue is due to the new ballpark, not to winning the World Series (or even becoming a decent team)
3) The Phillies remain at least as popular as they are now for several decades
4) No public money goes into CBP renovation
5) There are no other increased public costs to the city for hosting the Phillies in a new stadium (no police, fire, road construction costs, etc)
6) We're not counting the interest that could have been gained by simply saving the $174 million conservatively
7) The Phils would have paid $0 in property taxes if they owned the stadium (ha)
Then CBP will break even for the city in 18 years and bring in a paltry $10 mill per year (in a $4 billion budget in 2010) after that. Of course, that is just the impact on the Philly city government, not on the total Philly economy. Most of the money spent at CBP comes from people living in Philly or the Philly area who would have otherwise spent the money in Philly or the Philly area. That money is now getting spent at CBP on $7 beers.
A broke city government that is being forced to cut down on fire departments and police, which is now so desperate that they are trying to shake down bloggers for Google ads money, might have found a better investment for $174 million than helping some millionaires get richer. Just a thought.

Just a thought.
i really dont care that much
I wouldn't expect you to care about people in another state getting shaken down to support your hobby. As out-of-city Phillies fans, both of us make out on the deal, since we get a nicer place to watch games when we visit CBP. The average Philadelphian is definitely getting boned on the deal though.
no chance...but you obviously have some sort of agenda....the stadium is the crown jewel of the city that gives more back than you can put any amount of money on

i never tire of seeing washington sports fans get their hearts ripped out right in front of me.
it would be better if the nats actually had fans but yes its quite enjoyable
the best part about this is that it will prevent the nats from having any fans for at least a season
the few nats fans i actually don't even bother me but in my head i know they're probably skins fans also. and that makes me feel good.

bryce harper is 17 hes at least two years away from the bigs and thats if he murders the minor leagues in a way almost no one ever has
id be shocked if he in the majors before hes 20 and that might be pushing it...realistically id say 2014...as a full timer of course to the popint where hed be drawing fans...he might be up for an expanded roster season before then
$20 he plays at some point in 11'?
no cause theres an outside chance he comes up with exanded rosters...i was talking in terms of him drawing fans to the park
that wont be for a couple years at the earliest
if he comes up for only one game next year it will be the only sellout of the year after opening day.
I can see him coming up in June/July, like when Strasberg did. If he's lighting up AAA and they're 25 games under, what's to lose? He'll play in the bigs in 11'.

yeah but no one is buying season tickets because of bryce harper next year like they would have for strasberg...and once harper plays one game the hype ends...its not like a lights out pitcher who gos once every five days where it becomes an event...for people to come see a batter the team has to be good
place will be a ghost town next year no matter what...with strasberg in for a full year some offseason promotion and a couple other moves the nats would have had some consistent crowds for the first time ever and in general interest would have been substantially up
hell just having strasberg as your ace next year makes them a legitimate team which draws more people
plus its much easier for a pitcher to come in and succeed at a young age...only position player i can ever remember coming up at 18 was a rod and he struggled his first two years up
i think harper is going to have a much longer learning curve in the minors than dh does...his competition in college was awful...time will tell but my money is on him struggling quite a bit in the minors
so the moral of the story is the nats are going to be in last place again
thanks for the heads up
Can't Strasberg just pitch with the other hand?

Both teams knew what they were getting into and took the risk, and both had a short term gain. Even Manny isn't a TO-level nutjob though.
No, but he is a first class thief. He laid down in Boston claiming some phantom injury and he's done it again in L.A.

Was getting ready to make a similar comment. TO, as much of a douche as he's been throughout his career, has never blatantly quit on his team. Manny's done it several times over. Hell, I think the dude got himself thrown out of the game yesterday on purpose. He's been around plenty long enough to know the proper way to say something to the ump about his calls without being that obvious about it.
He quit in Cleveland, Boston and now LA. Hell, the Dodgers just gave him to the ChiSox.....didn't even ask for anything in return.
Also, Manny's always been all about talent and selective effort. Owens was a 3rd round pick out of a small school who never had a natural knack for catching a football, and he turned himself into an absolutely dominant WR. But seriously, if I have to say anything nice about him again, I'll kill a kitten. And not in the sexy way.

He never faked an injury or refused to play. T.O. received some horrendous advise from a greedy bottom-feeding agent and his actions did help destroy a season, but honestly, the guy is a child mentally and it's not the least bit surprising he followed it.
Manny's just a weasel who's now laid down on two of his teams simply because he didn't feel like playing for them anymore.

As for it being worth our tax dollars.....that's pretty subjective because not everyone in the country is a sports fan. But sports, especially baseball, play a major role in our society and I think that the government should have more than just a passing interest in what the players and leagues are doing, especially when it comes to the use illegal substances.

i agree and you know there will be some very strong opinions against it considering the condition this country is in. on clemens himself, why doesn't he just admit it ? i mean he is heading for pete rose territory as far as denial goes.
Funny you mention that because Pete Rose recently told Clemens that he wish he had come clean back in 1989. In other words, Rose to Clemens that everyone knows he took roids and to fess up.
yeah, too bad rose like clemens, thought he was bigger than the game.
I will always argue on behalf of Pete Rose to get into the HOF though for the simple fact that he was caught gambling when he was a manager, not a player. On the field, Rose played the game as right as anyone has ever played and his accomplishments are as legit as can be. You can still ban him from working in baseball but you shouldn't ban his accomplishments as a player.
i couldn't agree more.
I think you could if you just tried a little harder.

Rose may not have admitted to betting as a player, but Dowd's investigation said he did.
I believe there was question on if he bet on baseball in 85 when he a player/manger. Either way rose should've come clean. He was his own worst enemy. Still, he should be in the hall of fame.

Not so much that he hates it in Texas, but Cliff Lee has never pitched well in Texas. Not to mention that the Yankees were originally the front runners to get Lee this year and Lee was pretty much packing his crap to head to the Bronx and then Texas came in at the last minute and outbid NY.

yeah if solid punch means possible neck tickle, then yes.
I like how the Marlins announcers (and then Skip Bayless this morning) were ripping Morgan for stealing 2nd and 3rd after getting hit by a pitch earlier in the game. Yeah, the Nats were down 14-3 at the time, but I'm a fan of doing unconventional shtein when you've basically got nothing to lose. The Nats are out of the playoff race, so who gives a shtein what they do to try and win a game? Not to mention that it was 14-3 in the 4th inning, not the 7th, 8th or 9th. Throwing at or behind him to "retaliate" for him swiping a couple bags after getting hpb is retarded. Don't intentionally put a guy on 1st if you don't want him stealing 2nd.
who cares what the score was?
i want any guy on my team who gets plunked, then steals second & third & scores while at the same time saying 'farg you' to the opposing team, coaches & fans.
and we've already established that the marlins announcers are the biggest fairies in sports, so it's no surprise they were ripping morgan.
yeah morgan should have his skulled bashed in but not because he stole a couple meaningless bases
i guess the nats shouldnt have scored TEN meaningless runs in the game
Obviously they should have just gone home after the 3rd inning.

Nice. And yeah, he probably would have. But just imagine how many career k's he'd have now too had be come up 3 years earlier. Besides, I'm not really worried about him setting any hr records or anything. About the only statistical accomplishment I'm hoping for out of him is that I'd like to see him get to 500 in a Phillies uniform.
Man would he look nice in right field in a phils uniform.

Dude was all alone in the left field bleachers, wearing batting gloves and dude tried to jump off a seat for a ball that didn't even need to be jumped for and just totally bit it....and did not catch the ball. I've been watching it over and over on my dvr and laughing my ass off at this guy for about 10 minutes now.

atlanta is just a rectum of a fanbase. you're team is .5 game out of 1st place, playing the cardinals in september and all you can sell is 20,776 tickets ? of which probably only 12,000 actually attended the game ? disgusting.

Florida shouldn't have any teams. It's disgusting to think the Heat will bring them some championships in the near future.
Cincy clinched the division on a walkoff HR, TB and NY clinched playoff spots, Colorado was officially eliminated, and San Diego is falling out of the race after losing two at home to the Cubs, so it looks like the Phils will face the Giants or Reds in the NLDS...
I was really hoping that the Padres would handle business in the west. The Giants seem to be a tough match up for the Phils and the Phils have had a tough time winning in SF the last couple of years.
Giants scare the shtein out of me more than any other team in the NL. That park by the bay is big trouble. Padres showing their true colors the past month.
while the phils batters will have a tougher time hitting HR's in san fran they have been hitting period. i think they can produce some runs there with how hot they are right now. also, remember that the giants hitters have to face the phils big 3 in there as well which isn't going to be easy for their hitters.

I won't get over the Lee trade until they are WFC again.

Not really. Oswalt helped take away a lot of the sting, but I'm still a bit pissed about trading Lee.
I'm still pissed because none of the 3 guys they got for him has any future in the majors.
Let Werth walk, use the money to sign Lee, go with Halladay-Lee-Oswalt-Hamels-Blanton next year. WHO NEEDS OFFENSE
looks like Tampa is gonna be 3 and out
Rays, ouch. Owned again. They looked totally lost out there.
The problem that Tampa had coming into the playoffs is offense......which is a weird thing to say about a team that was 3rd in all MLB in runs scored this year with 802. But they also finished 27th in batting average and the 3rd best batting average on the team was Jason Bartlett at .254 (min 400 ab's). They also had 4 players with a minimum of 100 ab's who hit below .200, including Carlos Pena who had nearly 500 ab's and hit just .196. There's a reason why this team was on the wrong end of so many no hitters and shut outs this year. They don't hit for much power (only 2 players with 20+ hr, none with 30) and other than David Price, they don't have any starting pitchers who put a lot of fear into opposing batters. James Shields is nice but had a down year. Somehow these guys are even more inconsistant than the Phillies offense.
I hope they contract that team. Fake ass Tampa fans deserve to get thumped
I don't think they need to contract but they need to get out of St Pete and into Tampa.
That's such a tough market to build a team in though because there are so many transplants who already have a favorite team. It would realistically take them about 20-25 years to build a loyal fan base.

No way the Yankees are "hot" right now. They're winning games late but they're not by any means on a roll. They're a rollercoaster just like the Phils are right now. The Rangers have everything going good at the right time...the starting pitching has been excellent, the bats have been hot, and they're a bullpen-choke away from looking like a easy 4 game sweep of the Yanks.

I guess I should have put the "right now" after the "they're a roller coaster", as in referring to the Yankees. The Phils all season have been up and down, especially with the bats. Their bats still are up and down, really.
Every team, ever, is up and down all season.
Cliff Lee has 9ks through 5 vs NY. Pitch count is getting up there though.
13 through 8 w/ 125 pitches
Hahah farg you Yankees.
Only thing better than the Cowboys losing is watching these iceholes get spanked.
Cliff Lee is just wrong. He is the beast.
lolololol at the mass exodus from the stadium.
I hope the Yankees make this interesting in the ninth after 90% of those phonies in the stands left.

Also, Josh Hamilton is a beast.
The Cliff Lee trade still pisses me off.

Yankees didn't feel the need to stay and watch Cliff Lee pitch 8 or 9 innings because they know they'll get to see it about 17 times next year.

I'm surprised at how poor Texas is playing. Sure they are facing good pitching, but they hit Sabathia and Pettitte enough to win. They also hit David Price enough to win twice and Price was arguably the best lefty in the game this season.

The Win Is Dead, Long Live The Win
So, at first, in honor of Felix Hernandez's Cy Young win on Thursday I was going to do something kitschy you know, make this thing read like an obituary for the pitcher's win, or write it as a eulogy for pitcher's win, or, you know, make some other sort of contrived reference to the day the win died.
But in the end, you know what? The win did not die on Thursday. In fact, Thursday was not even an especially bad day for the win. The real win revolution began a long time ago -- more than 30 years ago. I'll get to that in minute.
Yes, Seattle's Felix Hernandez won the Cy Young despite a 13-12 record. Yes, he won it even though C.C. Sabathia won 21 games -- only the second American League pitcher the last five years to win more than 20 games.* Yes Hernandez won it handily even though there was a lot of hand-wringing -- a couple of those hands being my own -- over the question: Can a pitcher win a Cy Young with 13 wins and 12 losses?
*Sabathia has now led the league in victories in back-to-back years and not won a Cy Young award. The last guy to lead the league in wins in back-to-back years was Roger Clemens in 1997-98 -- and he won the Cy Young both years. The last guy to lead the league in wins in back-to-back years and NOT win at least one Cy Young wasWilbur Wood in the early 1970s.
A quick look:
Leading the league in wins in back-to-back years:
C.C. Sabathia (2009-10): No Cy Youngs
Roger Clemens (1997-98): 2 Cy Youngs
Greg Maddux (1994-95): 2 Cy Youngs
Tom Glavine (1991-92-93): 1 Cy Young
Roger Clemens (1986-87): 2 Cy Youngs
LaMarr Hoyt (1982-83): 1 Cy Young
Jim Palmer (1975-76-77): 2 Cy Youngs
Catfish Hunter (1974-75): 1 Cy Young
Wilbur Wood (1972-73): No Cy Youngs
All of this King Felix love suggests that the era of wins being the dominant pitching statistic has come to an end -- anyway, that was my first reaction. But as I thought about it more, I kind of changed my mind. The win isn't dead, nothing close to dead. People are just looking at it differently. The truth is that King Felix's 13 wins are not CLOSE to the record for fewest wins for a Cy Young pitcher. The truth is that a 13-12 record is not even CLOSE to the least impressive record in Cy Young history.
And in the end, I'm not sure that Hernandez's Cy Young award really has anything at all to do with the devaluing of the win. I think Felix Hernandez was just an unusual pitcher in an unusual year. Look: It's not often that a pitcher as great as King Felix -- someone who was already ACKNOWLEDGED as great even before the year began -- plays for an offensive team as pitiful as the 2010 Seattle Mariners. Well, first of all, it's not often that there even IS an offensive team as pitiful as the 2010 Seattle Mariners. This really was a stunningly bad team.
How bad? Well, for fun, I punched in Steve Carlton's amazing 1972 season into the Mariners season. Repeat: I did this for fun. The 1972 and 2010 seasons are not especially similar. Teams scored about 14% more runs in 2010 than in 1972. And Carlton made 41 starts and completed 30 games in 1972, which obviously would not happen now. But I was curious -- Carlton went 27-10 in low-scoring 1972 for an abominable Philadelphia team that lost 97 games. What if you mirror his season -- Game 1 for Game 1, Game 37 for Game 37, Game 104 for Game 104 -- and give him Seattle's run support. What would the record look like then?
Well, I'll tell you: He would have gone 20-10 with Mariners run support. That's making 41 starts and with little bullpen use. Does that give you an idea how bad the Mariners offense was? If you adjust for era, put Carlton on a five-man rotation, give him the Mariners bullpen -- yep, he probably would have gone something like 13-12.
See, this was just a strange year. The guy who most people would consider the best pitcher in the league played for a team so odious offensively that the won-loss record was simply pointless. And people were paying attention. That's a good thing. For years, writers and analysts have talked about "hard luck" pitchers. Well, Hernandez had such hard luck, that finally people realized it wasn't luck at all. It was absurdity. Anyone who reads this knows I don't like won-loss records anyway, but more often than not the record gives you at least SOME reflection of how well a pitcher pitched. But in King Felix's case, it did not and everyone understood it. Plus Hernandez's other basic stats were so good -- he led the league in starts, in ERA and was just one behind in strikeouts -- that he was more or less the obvious choice no matter his record.*
*A few other people seem to have made this point but it's worth making again: Felix Hernandez DID NOT win the Cy Young because of new-fangled advanced stats. I realize that this has been written by a couple of people, but it just isn't true. He did not lead the league in Fangraphs WAR -- in fact he finished third behind Cliff Lee and Justin Verlander. He was also third in xFIP -- that ERA that attempts to cut out defensive contributions -- behind Francisco Liriano and Lee. The Baseball Reference numbers were better for him -- he did lead in Baseball Reference WAR and Win Probability Added -- but even there he was second in ERA+ to Clay Buchholz. The advanced numbers made plain that Felix had a great year, but other pitchers were very similar. It wasn't odd-looking acronyms that won Felix the Cy Young but things like ERA and strikeouts, you know, the stuff about as old as baseball.
I have mentioned a couple of time that the anti-win revolution began a long time ago. Yes, of course, wins have played a huge role in Cy Young voting. In 1983, LaMarr Hoyt probably wasn't one of the 10 best pitchers in the American League -- he wasn't in the Top 10 in ERA, just as a starting point -- but he got an inordinate amount of run support (an astonishing 19 games where the White Sox scored five or more runs for him) and he won 24 games. Bob Welch won 27 games in 1990 and won the Cy Young though Roger Clemens ERA was a full run lower and he was inarguably the more dominant pitcher.Jack McDowell won 22 games and won the Cy Young in 1993 when Kevin Appier only won 18 and pretty clearly pitched a lot better. And there are other examples.
But, still, the significance of the win in my mind began dwindling way back in 1974, when a pitcher won the Cy Young with (gasp) a 15-12 record. Are you kidding me? A 15-12 record? And that was way back in 1974? How did that happen? And that was nothing. Five years later, a pitcher won the Cy Young with a 6-6 record. SIX AND SIX. And in the years since then, pitchers have won Cy Youngs with nine wins, with seven wins, with six wins, five wins (FIVE STINKING WINS?) and, it's almost impossible to believe, with four wins (no way, four wins? No way. That didn't happen).
If you know your Cy Young history, you could probably put names by those records. Mike Marshall won with that 15-12 record. Then Bruce Sutter won with the 6-6 record. After that it was Willie Hernandez who won with nine wins, Dennis Eckersley with seven, Rollie Fingers with six wins, Steve Bedrosian with five and the ever-popular Mark Davis who won with a 4-3 record. Of course, these are all firemen/relievers/closers, and it has been obvious for more than 35 years that these pitchers absolutely were not to be judged by wins. No, they were to be judged by a new statistic called "saves." The Baseball Writers embraced saves pretty quickly. Of course it was one of the legendary baseball writers, Jerome Holtzman, who invented it.
The point, I think, is that the all-mighty win really started to lose its mojo then. Baseball observers began to realize that the game was changing, and that pitchers who only threw the late innings could be as valuable, could even be MORE valuable, than starters with lots of wins.
Yes, plenty of people continue to love the win as a statistic. Just this week, National League Cy Young winner Roy Halladay threw his support behind the win. So did a few writers. They came hard at us with that old logic: "A pitcher's job to win games." Of course, it really isn't. It's a TEAM'S job to win games. Anyway, the game isn't the same. As starters complete fewer and fewer games, as they pitch fewer and fewer innings, as relievers play a bigger and bigger role, well, it's plain silly to look at pitcher wins the way we did even a few years ago. I think Felix Hernandez's Cy Young award just punctuates the point.
But this is not an obituary. And this is not a eulogy. The win ain't dead, and I don't think the win should be dead either. Seems to me the won-loss record is a perfectly fine thing to look at, a fun thing to talk about, a connection to the past, and it's simple to understand. You can use it to teach math to kids. Plus it often tells us something very interesting. For instance, I think Hernandez's won-loss record was quite revealing. It told us that the Mariners were ghastly at hitting baseballs. Fortunately, the voters* realized that this wasn't Felix Hernandez's fault.
*I should point out here -- or somewhere, I guess -- that I was one of the American League Cy Young voters. My ballot looked like this:
1. Felix Hernandez, Seattle
2. C.C. Sabathia, New York
3. David Price, Tampa Bay
4. Jered Weaver, Los Angeles
5. Cliff Lee, Texas

You think Lidge is going to stick around for more than this upcoming year? You don't think they can deal him somewhere?
Off the nuts.
so lets trade for heath bell...then flip lidge for prospects.
is this a video game?
I give up; its like talking to Billy Beane again.
Quote@Buster_ESPN: growing speculation among rival agents and executives that the Nationals are going to throw a HUGE number at Cliff Lee
Wouldn't that be peachy!
yeah i heard last night that they were the only team willing to give him a seventh year
danny snyder owns the nats now?
Now they're saying it's the Orioles, not the Nats
Do the Nationals have the $$$$ to sign Lee?
lerners are filthy rich
I hope he does go to Baltimore. Yankees lose out on him and he ends up in their division
If Lee signs with Baltimore there's no chance he makes it out of spring training without requiring Tommy John surgery minimum.
Matt Diaz was courted by 7 teams, including the Phils. He chose the Pirates....ha
dude wanted to get paaaaaaaaaaaiiiid
Marlins are trying to acquire Greinke.
if they get him they lock up the nl east
johnson
sanchez
grienke
that matches up with the phils and the marlins' lineup is leaps and bounds better, faster and younger
Bet?
if they get him they are hands down the favorites
so yes. if.

Natt Stairs? (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5919084)
Quote"Obviously it would help if Pettitte came back," the source said. "But it wouldn't do any good to Brett Favre his ass and drag him back if he really doesn't want to play."
Brett Favre is now a verb.

Greinke's going to Milwaukee.
Hopefully he can handle the pressure cooker.
Greinke/Gallardo/Marcum/Wolf is a decent rotation
The best rotation in the National League, I'd say. Fo sho.

Greinke/Gallardo/Marcum/Wolf is a decent rotation
its more than decent and could easily beat the phillies in a series
Roy Halladay would be the 8th best pitcher in a match up of those two teams

is this bait for a phillies nl east bet feeding into a phillies world series bet cause if so it is ON
phillies will easily win the east
but ill bet anything you want that they dont win the ws
im not touchin that right now unless you give me significant odds...come october this should change
once again, like last year, they are in the playoffs and when we get there we can evaluate. im not writing them off like a hater like you will but i think we know how potentially awful their lineup is.
chicken shtein
I'll take their Vegas 7:2 odds vs you on that IGY if you want for fifty.
