I'd vote for him 1-A after Randy Johnson. Johnson really should be a unanimous choice but someone will leave him off a ballot because he didn't laugh at one of their jokes back in 1992.

Brookover is a pompous jackass.
Never had time to give my picks last night:
Johnson's a no-brainer. Probably the last 300 game winner.
Clemens/Bonds/Sosa - I'd put them in, but they're probably the sacrificial lambs of the steroid era for now.
Smoltz - Success as both starter and reliever, probably pumps him up a little (overrated in my opinion, but still there).
Martinez/Schilling - career numbers total low. Martinez more dominant regular season, both dominant in the postseason. I'd say yes to both.
Biggio - 3,000 hits gets him in.
Bagwell - Borderline. Not sure he did anything to achieve greatness. Very, very good, but never great.
Mussina - See Bagwell.
Walker - See Bagwell. And even those numbers are Colorado-inflated.
Mattingly - Not even considered if not a Yankee. Peak was great, but far too short.
Raines is the one that gets me. I want him in, and pre-steroid era he would have had a great shot. Those inflated numbers of the 1990s-2000s killed his chances.
i think if anything the steriod era helps raines numbers and makes him look better
Johnson
Smoltz
Pedro
Biggie
People actually didn't vote for Randy or Pedro
baseball HOF voters are the worst.
biggio getting in is a disgrace
15 out of 549 voters didn't vote for Randy Johnson, who is only the single-greatest left handed pitcher in the history of the sport.
Those 15 clowns should immediately have their voting rights eliminated.
Yep.
Same for the dopes who didn't vote for Pedro
Jeff Kent only getting 14% is stupid. He's better than Biggio
But because the funholey writers didn't like him bc he was an icehole to them

Yeah I'm an Astros fan so pin my ideas on that, but you're all out of your farging mind
Biggio was very good.
My point is if you're putting Biggio in then Kent has to have more than 14%.
If Biggio doesn't hang on for another year or two to get 3k hits does he get it? Nope.
kents horrible...roid monkey who couldnt field a lick
bagwell roid monkey and is not a HOF'er anyway
remember its the hall of fame not the hall of really good or great
I'm on the fence with Kent but he was better than Biggio.
So my point is if Biggio gets in then why does Kent get only 14%?
There weren't any whispers about him being a roid monkey...at least not what I remember
But he was really good
kent = roid monkey....everyone knows it....and whether it was roid rage or he was just an icehole or both no one liked him...not saying I agree with that part of it but its a factor
and I agree that neither biggio or kent deserve it
I think he was just an icehole. But the writers get butthurt when they get ignored and I hate that.
I wanna know the names of the dopes who left unit and Pedro off
Pedro you can make a case against, although it wouldn't be a very good case. There's no conceivable reason other than being an old senile curmudgeon or attention whore for not voting for Johnson.
Biggio I could go either way with but 3000 hits plus he played most of his career at 2b and catcher. Also had close to 300 hrs and over 400 stolen bases.
I went to a game in the late 90s with some of my coworkers when we were working TDCJ in Huntsville...sat in RF and I had my Bobby A jersey on.
We stopped to eat before hand and these fools made big B, G, O letters from beer boxes the waitress gave them.
They stood up one at a time with their letter and would yell it. "B! G! O!" and before you know it they had the whole place going nuts and chanting it. Pretty impressive.
biggio was a good player who hung around 3 years past his exit date to hit his stats....him being in the HOF is a joke, but that place is already a joke as it is. hes the least of its problems.
at least 2 writers handed in blank ballots...im sure that hack from LA put jack morris' name or something on it and called it a day. plus plenty of guys left pedro off because they assumed he'd get in anyway, and they wanted to vote for their guys. yes. the process is farging stupid and flawed.
meanwhile barry bonds...the greatest hitter ever....not in because some of his stats are inflated.
#53 FTW!
Jeff Kent was a power hitter, with only like 80 more HR career than Biggio. Biggio was a faaaaaaaaar more complete player than Kent. Offensively he was an identical player to Roberto Alomar - everyone thought was a lock, sure-fire hall of famer.
Same story for Bagwell and Frank Thomas, except Bagwell was actually worth something in the field and on the bases. His career was cut short like 3-4 years because of arthritis and still had 450 HR. He was a dominant offensive force for like a 10 year run. If Albert Pujols retired right now, is he a Hall of Famer? Hell farging yes. Him and Bags have identical numbers. Nobody knows or cared because he played in Houston.
Pedro definitely deserved to get in. His stretch from 97 to 03 compare to Koufax's 6 year run... which is eI have nothing to contribute.
Yeah I am not saying the Biggio wasn't good. He was very good. Especially with switching positions three times.
I just have a hard time saying he's a HOF player and a guy like Kent only gets 14% of the vote.
Has anyone seen the ballots or heard about who left big unit and Pedro off?
Because the guy was a complete dickhole and used. If he played 1b or DH (read: played a position he should have- why he was forced int 2b, nobody will ever know), he would've been completely forgotten about by now.
Also, big picture, yes the HOF is completely worthless. Still nice to see Biggio get in, and if you don't think he should be, mds has it right in that he's really the least of the issues.
biggio I think is in the top ten all time career at bats...he was a very good player who played for a million years and built up numbers...but he doesnt even come close to passing the eye test as far as a hall of famer...Alomar was so much better than him it wasn't even funny...should never compare the two it makes biggio look real bad....like lil guy said the HOF got significantly worse because craig biggio is in it
bagwell and kent were roid monkeys I don't need definitive proof altho bagwell admitted to using something....andro I think...numbers wise theres a great case for bagwell....kent was overrated as shtein as a player
Quote from: ice grillin you on January 07, 2015, 08:06:55 PM
Alomar was so much better than him it wasn't even funny...should never compare the two it makes biggio look real bad....
.281 .363 .433, 3060 H, 668 2b, 55 3b, 291 HR, 414 SB
.300 .371 .443, 2724 H, 504 2b, 80 3b, 210 HR, 474 SB
If you think he stuck around too long to get 3k hits and wouldn't get in otherwise, I wouldn't really argue. He had 1500-2000 more AB, But these # are far too close to say it makes that much a difference
Also yes Bags admitted to some amphetamine. Also Pedro was on the first list of supposed users that got leaked in like 2003... are pitchers not named Clemens pretty much immune to this?
biggio had TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED more plate appearences...but im not even talkin numbers...im talking eye test...one was clearly a hall of famer and one wasnt....biggio was a really nice player....alomar was dynamic
i don't believe that pedro took roids...if i found out he did i may not put him in....but pitchers are absolutely held to a different standard than hitters
bags admitted to andro as well...just looked it up...and im pretty sure if he did that plus amphetamines he was also putting a needle in his ass
I think that may be the first time igy has used capital letters here
:o
the problem with the hall is people think with their hearts....or use nonsense comparassions to different eras and players who stunk who wound up in the hall because they were drinking buddies with the right people
really electing people to the hall is easy. you just know. if there's a debate, then there's your answer. no one is debating johnson, pedro or smoltz. you knew 15 years ago with them.
Schilling is accusing the writers of bias because of his being a Republican.

How could it blow up in their face? The worst that can happen is that none of the players obtained in the trade become assets. And what they gave up is a horrific contract and a closer they will have no real use for over the next couple of years. [Unlike certain other teams, they realize that a non-contender has no use for an expensive closer.]
Sure, they could have gotten more for Kimbrel, but unloading Upton was the goal here.

Oh that's right. shtein and we get every Doyers/Halos game in Hawaii. I can listen to Vin Scully all day.

Are they any closer to resolving that issue? I take it the games are balcked out on MLB.com? All the west coast teams consider Hawaii as part of their market so no Padres, Dodgers, Angels, A's, Giants are Mariners games on mlb.com. iceholes. As stated we get Angels on Fox Sports West and Dodgers on Sports Net LA.
From what I last read, they're no closer to bridging that gap. DirecTV knows that they have the leverage. Although Southern California is missing out on Dodgers baseball, there haven't been any riots because of it either. Time Warner will eventually drop their request and make due. I think that's how DirecTV sees it. I don't even have Time Warner service in my area, even if I wanted to switch.

Better Call RAJ
World Champ Nats are 2-6 and made three more errors today.
they were 1 game under i think june 1 of last year and won close to 100 games
big deal
How many wins for them this year?
I smell a bet
all teams in the division with a philly team are overrated and awful
How many wins?
If the Phillies were the odds on favorite to win the division and started out 2-6 with Bad News Bears defense you, the call-it-like-he-sees-it-master, would be screeching like a banshee from a mountaintop of how zesty they look.
So call it...are the Nats playing good ball? Is it fair to say their defense sucks?
Who cares how many games they win...they are going to win the division and prob be the favorite to win the ws when the post season starts...then they will either do so or they will gag again....and if they do then rightfully kill them...as for now you sound like a 12 year old kid in little league talking shtein about a friends sports team....or ironically very much like a DC sports fan
Sorry for hating a team that I hate.
All I said the other day...an observation that anyone with 0-2 eyes can see - is their defense blows and their offense has been shtein. That's not being petty. That's saying what everyone can see.
I've als said they'd likely win the East by default.
And I don't care that my team sucks - I like to see the Nats fail.
the season is five minutes old and your team blows....settle down
So? When is it allowable to comment on another team then?
we go head to head this weekend then you can talk shtein....20 bucks a game...4 game series
Oooooh I like it!
Ok let's go.

I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened yet. In the World Series year of 1980, the NL came (I believe) one or two votes short of adopting it.
The Phils were in favor, but wanted to wait until the winter meetings, so they abstained. It would have been perfect for The Bull.

Well I agree that they should d been able to cut him but it's all about the contract. If the teams wanted to have that option then they should hold the mlbpa feet to the fire in collective bargaining and have provisions written in that a contract can be voided upon suspension for PEDs

can you give me a quick rundown of which stats are nerdy and which are ok to use
i dont really have a chart for that....if you show me a stat i can tell you if it is nerdy....batting average is not one of them tho
RBI? WORTHLESS!
rbis are more meaningful than wins
but really rbis and runs are a team stat. you can argue tons of things in sports are team stats (cant get passing yards with proper blocking and good receivers) but there are tons of individualized baseball stats that are more telling of a players production than rbis.
WAR is king of the nerd stats, right?

lol..wow...do you see the parallels between this convo and someone complaining about those "elitist" liberals. wonder where you got that word from, tex.
anyway, id recommend actually finding out what era+ is before you proclaim it to be stupid. i honestly dont know what it is or hows it tabulated and dont care. ERA is kind of iffy as it is....its very dependent on a number of factors out of the pitchers control. i much prefer WHIP and K/9 but to each their own.
You're reaching if you're trying to tie my using of elitist to some political shtein.
Keep swinging away, pal.

ERA+ adjusts ERA to ballpark and league average. League average is 100. One of the most unnecessary pitching stats. If you want to use advanced pitching stats all you need is FIP and that's it.
I don't know if anyone actually uses VORP. The only place I've ever seen it mentioned is here.
lol @ WAR being unbelievably awful.
I use research methods and statistics at work to do things better than most people who are using "traditional" methods. The field deals with the exact same two problems sabermetrics has. 1. a huge chunk of the population automatically rejects it for no other reason than it's new (ish? not really, at this point), different, and can't be understood in 3 minutes 2. people who are the ones who do this work are absolutely terrible at communicating the purpose and effectiveness in simpleton terms.
i never gave sabermetrics a chance until now because of it being equated to gay marriage.

I don't know what you do but im sure its more meaningful than the game of baseball....and even then im sure there are so many meaningless numbers in your field....baseball was probably bordering on having too many stats before sabremetrics...sabremetrics has just become ridiculous....its for people trying to give meaning to a meaningless life...and don't get me wrong im not hating...my life is less than meaningless...but im not trying to invent baseball stats to better it...nerd vorp gulp when i swallow hear the BOOM!
The most gimmicky and useless stat of them all for evaluating performance is clearly W-L for a pitcher. It's far more of a joke than even arcane SABR stats like UZR and XR. Discuss.
less wins is always better...ask heidi
@igy - that's my point #2 - there needs to be a process to weed out all that BS. Saber is (typically) useful, but Everything just adds adds adds to some pile of knowledge instead of focusing on the important pieces and tossing the rest. The newer stuff that is also useful gets the raw deal because there's already so much garbage out there.

Dropping that card out at his age takes a certain amount of smug narcissism that you don't find in 99.9999999% of the population. The sooner his breed is weeded out, the better.
ump was out of control all night....he completely farged arod on the last pitch of the game as well....but still bryce is a moron for getting upset on strike one and in the third inning
I hate Brycie and he can go farg himself but Marvin Hudson is a known baiter and likes confrontation
Brycie didn't do anything wrong. He's still a smug dickhead who can farg off tho
I wouldn't say he did nothing wrong...he definitely threw out some histrionics...no it was not enough to get kicked out....but i think where Bryce was wrong is that it was the first pitch of an at bat in the 3rd inning...I mean come on there should be zero reaction to a bad call there
if it was a tie game in 8th or 9th inning where every pitch is important....or he got punched out on that pitch then react

The FBI and federal prosecutors are investigating the St. Louis Cardinals for hacking rival baseball team Houston Astros to steal closely guarded information about player personnel, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
Compromised information includes internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports, the Times reported, citing law enforcement officials. There is evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of special databases, the Times said.
Major League Baseball officials had no immediate comment.

This should be a million times more controversial than Deflategate, they broke into another team's data.... although like Deflategate I suspect it's an example of a relatively low level person making a dumb decision to try and give his team some small advantage. Like some guy tested out Luhnow's old Cards passwords on the Astros system and got in.

From ESPN's winners/losers column:
QuoteNew York Mets
The Mets have hung in the NL East race despite not really having an offense, so it made sense when GM Sandy Alderson went out and made a trade for Carlos Gomez, a good two-way outfielder and not even a particularly expensive one. But as word leaked out, the trade was scuttled amid reports that the Mets were either concerned about Gomez's health or backtracking on financial grounds. The team blamed the whole thing on "social media," which is a popular scapegoat for old white men to use, and seeing Alderson break out that line makes me wonder exactly how dystopic Logan's Run really was.
After failing to trade Zack Wheeler for Gomez, they tried to trade him for Jay Bruce, only to have that deal fall through, as well, when the Mets realized that Bruce expected to be paid. Instead, they got impending free agent Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers minutes before the deadline. Cespedes is having a career year and certainly qualifies as the big bat the Mets needed, so landing him is nice, particularly since the Mets were able to do so without trading Wheeler. Still, there are two reasons not to be over the moon about the trade.
First, the Mets can't play Cespedes, Curtis Granderson, and top outfield prospect Michael Conforto at the same time without putting Granderson in center, a proposition that makes me sweat under my eyes at this point in Granderson's career. Second, Cespedes, a fine player who's worked out of the cooler-than-he-is-good rut he'd been in for a couple of years, is now obviously New York's third choice, and only because the Mets couldn't bring themselves to take on two relatively cheap contracts for players locked up past this season. In light of all the baggage that came before, the Cespedes trade is a Pyrrhic victory at best.
I'm not going to rehash the reasons the Wilpons are such comprehensively embarrassing owners, because they're well documented. But at what point does their custodianship of this highly visible franchise pass the McCourt Zone? For the good of everyone involved, the commissioner's office needs to step in and force a sale by whatever means necessary, because the Mets aren't being run like a baseball team anymore.
The line at the end of the first paragraph was farging hilarious.

What a boring game. Even with Miggy back they can't hit.
Kuechel threw well. Almost got a foul ball. Closest I've ever come.
the greatest team in the history of baseball is 4.5 out of 1st
They're now below .500
2-8 L10 and lost six in a row
You ok Havas?

me: do you think the nats will have a better rotation than the 11 phils
igy: lol
current nats top 6 starters era - 3.62
phillies top 6 starter era from 2011 - 2.84
records on aug. 16: nats: 58-59; phi: 78-42
i still think they win the division but if they dont they are missing the playoffs and it will be the greatest single baseball season ever
better than '08 ...or '80 ?
way better
do you still take them over the 11 phils
or does it not matter because anthony rendon was hurt
id take the 2011 cardinals
To me it exemplifies how worthless tanking is in MLB. They got two first overall picks in a row and actually hit on both of them talent-wise (already an extraordinarily unlikely occurrence), and here they are not even piecing together a winning season. Meanwhile a team that has never had a first overall pick ever is blowing away the league. It's not basketball.
bryce harper is 22 and has a 452 obp, 30 homers, a +1000 ops and a 6.9 WAR.

dombrowski = world series winner
cherington = world series winner
roob = gave bad contracts
nats = won
solid effort
Oh yeah Cherington did a fantastic job with the Ramirez, Sandoval, Miley and Porcello deals.
And we know Amaro is a farg up.
Sorry to doubt your Nats, buddy.
cherington made one of the great deals ever and used what that deal gave him to put together a world series winning roster.....pretty sure that will be his legacy in boston....not pablo sandavol
dombrowski is an all time gm
the 13 sox were more fluke than anything, but a title is a title is a title. he does have that. everything he did after that was horrible.
dombrowski spent a ton of money and, like amaro, put his team in position to win multiple titles. they didnt do it. not on him. hes getting out before things get really bad, unlike roob who for some reason is STILL HERE. anyway hes not an "all time" anything. hes a solid baseball man, though.
hes an all time baseball scout/gm....he doesnt have a million world series but his track record for 30+ years is as good as anyones
yea he has such a great eye for talent. look at all the talent the tigers produced. they didnt trade for or throw cash at anyone.
so now being successful with the tigers is a bad thing and it also counts for the entire 40 years hes spent in major league baseball....not only has he not had a great career but he plain sucks....got it
never said that. you said he was an "all time" dude. i refuted that, simply stating he was nothing more than a "solid baseball man."
the evidence of his time with detroit proves that. they didnt produce a ton of talent, merely traded for and signed established players. now he deserves credit for building a winning team, even done via the deep pockets of illich, but hes not even theo.
i dont think you were alive or you werent old enough to pay attention during a large part of his career...which is probably why you brought up the tigers....even tho with the tigers he was good
lol at a solid baseball man....hes basically gillick with fewer rings
im looking through his bio now
he layed some of the ground work in montreal but left right before it got good in the early 90's....he put together that joke 97 marlins that won that everyone pretends never happened....then he went to detroit in 2002 and, as i said, did a nice job spending money and putting a good product on the field. its not his fault they didnt win more titles.
im sure his call to cooperstown is coming any minute.
hes no billy beane
hes got the same amount as legit rings as him

organizationally the mets did a real nice job building this thing. you have to give them credit for it. plus gary keith and ron are godly. the nats are horrible in every way shape and form. their players are iceholes, the announcers suck, the gm is a turd sandwich who smugly shut down his best pitcher at his peak because hes an idiot. papelbon. they deserve nothing.

I agree, farg NY and lol @ Metsicans.
Ok, based on years of trolling, I thought the Mets were the hated ones...but seemed like the past couple of seasons, the Nats had taken center stage...maybe because of the mediocrity of recent seasons the Mets have had. Have the Pirates ever shared in Philly's ire and despise?
I remember growing up it was the Giants (always)...and in a close 2nd the Braves (for most Dodgers fans). But that all went away with reshuffling. I don't know there's been enough history between Philly and ATL for any semblance of a rivalry.
Seems like Pirates have never been good enough to hate. Even now, its kind of fun watching them play.
Any feelings about the Nats on this board is primarily entirely because of Igy.

I remember...........................
good job by matt williams tonight not bringing in his best relief pitcher because, in 1960, some dude decided to create a stat called a "save."
what an utter disaster of a team
Yeah I don't think the save was around in 1960, son. Add about 10ish years
nice try gramps
QuoteThe term save was being used as far back as 1952.[2] Executives Jim Toomey of the St. Louis Cardinals, Allan Roth of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Irv Kaze of the Pittsburgh Pirates awarded saves to pitchers that finished winning games but were not credited with the win, regardless of the margin of victory. The statistic went largely unnoticed.
A formula with more criteria for saves was invented in 1960 by baseball writer Jerome Holtzman.[3] He felt that the existing statistics at the time, earned run average (ERA) and win–loss record (W-L), did not sufficiently measure a reliever's effectiveness. ERA does not account for inherited runners a reliever allows to score, and W-L record does not account for relievers protecting leads. Elroy Face of the Pittsburgh Pirates was 18–1 in 1959; however, Holtzman wrote that in 10 of the 18 wins, Face allowed the tying or lead run but got the win when the Pirates offense regained the lead.[1][note 1] Holtzman felt that Face was more effective the previous year when he was 5–2. When Holtzman presented the idea to J. G. Taylor Spink, publisher of The Sporting News, "[Spink] gave [Holtzman] a $100 bonus. Maybe it was $200." Holtzman recorded the unofficial save statistic in The Sporting News weekly for nine years before it became official in 1969. In conjunction with publishing the statistic, The Sporting News in 1960 also introduced the Fireman of the Year Award, which was awarded based on a combination of saves and wins.[1][6]
The save became an official MLB statistic in 1969.[1] It was MLB's first new major statistic since the run batted in was added in 1920.[1] Bill Singer is credited with recording the first official save when he pitched three shutout innings in relief of Don Drysdale in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3–2 Opening Day victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field on April 7 of that year.[7][8]
Nice history lesson.
1969 is when it became official.
Imagine when people look back to the stupid sabr beginnings and say "some dumbshtein created the xfip and war stat..."
Back to spreadsheets and calculators and formulas. Leave baseball to people who know the game!

Absolutely. The geezers such as myself, Rome, Geo watched the bums get bitch slapped in back to back years in the NLCS by Dodgers in 77 and 78, both painful series. 77 series at The Vet, bums about to go up 2 games to 1 (5 game series back then), top nine and Lopes is called safe at first and he was clearly out. You want to see footage of Bowa going ballistic watch that play. Bull Luzinski then totally misplays a ball hit by Manny Mota and the flood gates open up. Beat Doyers in 1983 only to lose to Orioles in WS and of course 08 & 09.

regardless, even if he was, a relief pitcher that does nothing 90% of the game, who is getting back rubs in the 4th inning, should not be yelling at an everyday player -- let alone the mvp -- to hustle. 1 dude plays 1500 innings and the other plays half the game for 1/2 inning, 65 times a year.

QuoteAmong the most jarring barbs, from Werth to Williams: "When exactly do you think you lost this team?"
The answer to that was pretty much when he was hired.
Or last year when he managed them right out of the playoffs.
manny machado is so farging good it's amazing how over shadowed he gets by Harper and trout
Damn Astros....21 runs?!
Impressive gag job by the Rangers today
Holt shtein! I watched a few minutes in the 8th and it was 10-6 Rangers and turned back to college football. Just saw your post. And that was to clinch the AL West correct?
Yep if Texas had won then they would've won the division
So AL West is still up for grabs
theyre still going to win it...but it was an epic choke
big trolling opportunity for texas j
For you too since you prob know a few Rangers fans from your days here
I think they have to start Hamels tomorrow....it'll be funny if he shteins the bed
Yep, just checked, Heidi going tomorrow.
jesus christ, I swear Max Scherzer has a no hitter through 6 innings every time he pitches.
one out away
So sad Papelboner had to miss this.
Clutch no no from the $210m man...get tuned up in the summer when the division is slipping away and throw a no no when it doesn't matter.
Oh and let's talk about the Mets...they're likely to get swept. Nice little clip they're ending the season with...bums

I rip the Mets and Nats and I'm embarrassing. I pick a Philly team to do well and I'm a homer.
Make up your mind, Worlds Greatest Fan.
you and everyone that knows you knows what you are about...you are a homer on heroin
No no no
Elaborate as to how that post makes me the most embarrassing Philly fan ever
I can't wait
I'm not playing your corny tell me how I am a homer game....like I've said it before you prove it all on your every day
ask anyone that knows you how much of s homer you are (sides romey)
It's corny to say I'm the most embarrassing Philly fan after I say how fraudulent the Nats and Mets are
stop being childish your homerism goes back a decade of more
find me one person besides romey ever that would say you are not a homer
Ok lemme get right on that...

stop focusing on what you said a couple of hours ago (which was by itself hilarious) and instead put that nonsense on top of your last 20 years
You're making less sense now
What I posted two hours ago caused you to respond that I'm an all time embarrassing Philly fan
1. How is what I posted hilariously wrong? I mean unless you think what I said about either your Nats or the Mets is wrong?
2. You really just wanted to tell me I'm a homer. Which we already know you (and your hand puppet lil guy) think.
So thanks! I'm honored to be an all time something. I should get a tshirt made
I got nothing
I figured that would be the answer bc nothing I said makes me an embarrassing Philly fan
nothing at all...you are 100% sane
Aww gee thanks buddy.
The last ten outs Scherzer struck out nine batters. That had to be one of the most dominating pitching performances in the history of the game. Holy shtein he was ON.
kerry wood's 20 k game might be above it. depends how you weigh 0 hits/17 k vs. 1 hit/20 k
Jimmy is managing the Dodgers today

Rangers with Heidi on the mound can't blow a 7 run lead can they?
Now Houston can celebrate with a loss
Houston got lucky
Lol at them running Chad Qualls out there
how did they get lucky? they made the playoffs.
hundred and 62 games of luck
My god you two are insane
You can figure it out.
i actually cant on this one
they front ran all season and got the 2nd WC. pretty sure theyre a good team.
Lost the division lead and WC and had to claw back and rely on LA to lose
Good season yes but lucky they didn't piss away the playoffs
You're not this stupid
did the phillies get lucky when the mets choked in 2007 and 2008
it took the Phillies three or four choke years to even get in the playoffs
Astros are so ahead of of their curve it's ridiculous
As always you both miss the point. But whatever. Keep busting out the magnifying glass on every post.

World Series predictions?
I'd like to see any of th NL teams in it except the Mets and Cards. Dodgers because of Jimmy and Grit. Cubs because of the curse. Pirates because they're fun to watch.
I'd prefer not to see the Yanks or Blue Jays in it. farg Toronto and Joe Carter
Royals vs Pirates would melt the tv execs faces. Gimme that one
marlins dude there, of course
this dude is the goat troll
Loria should just hire him as their manager
Looks like he's in an Astros jawn though
cards yanks is who id like to see
cubs rangers/Toronto is who I predict....gun to the head id prob pick the rangers
Dodgers vs Blue Jays would be fun bc of the pitching vs the hitting
That is if Kershaw doesn't crumble in the playoffs...again.
But I'm all in on Buccos and Royals...assuming they can knock off Arrieta
I hate the dodgers so much....I think id rather have anyone win but them...altho the cubs would get red sox type suckage from the media
i dont care so long as its not: yankees, cards, pirates, dodgers, mets
cubs would be cool
oh mets go without saying....I was automatically disqualifying them

I still have trouble grasping the fact that the Astros play in the AL
How do i watch the playoffs without cable. I have mlb.tv which says it has playoff games and blackout restrictions... i.e. theyll all be blacked out
See if TNT and TBS have an app
On ESPN download the watch ESPN app
All those apps are wack as hell. Have my buddy's FIOS login which has access to literally everything apparently. ESPN Watch, TBS Online, Fox Sports Go, etc. It took me less than 2 minutes to figure out how to do all of this. Technology is amazing
When I was too cheap to replace my living room tv during March madness the app for that was good. I found the watch ESPN to be pretty good too

if the pirates have beef they couldve: A) won more games B) won tonight C) not been from a pennsyltucky shteinhole of a town

Los Doyers and Chicago NLCS
yeah shame on the Pirates for not winning 10 more games than every other team in the majors

I was confused until the explanation of once he was called out it didn't matter. But the out call was reversed so he was able to keep the bag.
I'm surprised he's not concussed
He also took out Tejada in 2010 and had a takeout slide a couple weeks ago in Milwaukee
But he's been doing it his whole career as we have all seen

Utley suspended for games 3 and 4
Boooooooooo
don't get me wrong im all for hurting the mets but GRIT is a disgraceful coward who should have gotten 10-15 games
You're either insane or fishing for a debate
10-15 games? Coward?
He's been sliding hard like that for...oh how long has he been in the league?
show me one slide like that that hes ever done....that wasn't a slide....it was an attack...it was incredibly late it was wide of the base and it barely was even a slide....GRIT's knees went into Tejada...it wasnt some hook slide where he used his feet to sweep him....in fact Tejada touches the base then retreats from it to make the throw...in other words he had already touched the base and left it when he was hit....so you cant even use the "in the area" excuse for getting hit like that
he should get as many games as Tejada is out for but since hes out for the season id go 15....much of it has to do with the injury....if he wasn't injured id maybe say don't suspend him at all and let someone throw a fastball down his throat but even that cant be done because the game are too important now
I classify it as a hard slide...sure it was late but he's trying to break up the double play.
His hand was close to the base. It wasn't as egregious as some of the slides where the guy is nowhere near the base.
Ripken had no problem with it. Many middle INFs have said that Tejada put himself in a bad spot because he tried to turn the DP and should have touched the base and bailed realizing it wasn't going to happen.
There have been pics floating out there where Daniel Murphy and David Wright have gone in hard and late. Not to mention Coghlan taking Kang out weeks ago (where was the suspension and fine there?)
the rule is you have to touch the base on your slide....but that's not even the worst thing he did....the slide itself was a joke...like I said it really wasn't even a slide...its was careless at best and incredibly dirty at worst...even if you go careless the guy broke a rule and because of that broke a leg....get him out
if they beat the mets it would be a joke to see him in an nlcs game
Chase definitely banged your old lady. That's the only reasonable explanation for your retardation toward him.
I actually love him.....but I don't let it cloud my judgement just because he used to play for my favorite team and hes Gritty and all that or because he did it against my most hated team
It was a little dirty.....if nothing else, it was over-the-top aggressive. He was damn near even with the bag when he went into his slide.
That's sports though and shtein happens. In the end, it worked. Dodgers score the tying run on that play and kept a rally going.
Oh it was definitely high and late but that's how that shtein is supposed to be played. Utley has gotten taken out a million times like that, but since this happened against the Mets on national tv, it's the dirtiest take out slide EVAR!!
In the old days Chase would have gotten drilled during his next at bat and that would have been the end of it.
But in this pussified nanny state society we live in, everyone has to be super nice on the field. You know, role models and shtein.
Lame.
lol...phillie and dodger fans keep saying that hit has happened a million times before both perpetrated by or having happened to GRIT in the past but im still waiting to see proof of a single one that mirrored what he did to tejada
heyman as usual nails it

Here's several not involving Utley that did not result in a suspension.
first one - not remotely the same.....first it was an actual hook slide on the ground....second his foot went right over the base....no issue with this one whatsoever
second one - this was a bad one but still not in the class of GRIT's...he went over the bag and hit the base before the man...still even tho it wasn't anything like GRIT's id have no problem with a one or two game suspension here as its not a good look...unlike GRIT's theres an argument to be made either way here
third one - this was the closest to GRIT's in that it wasn't near the base but it was still a slide...I cant recall ever seeing something like GRIT's where the player doesn't even slide...I don't know what youd call it but a tackle....he went knees first into the player...whatever GRIT did it was not a slide or any sort of baseball play......that said even tho this is not like GRIT's I def would have suspended Coughlan for recklessness
when they set the blocking the plate rule, i noted how stupid it was that 3B can block that base without the ball, but catchers cant do the same
the same goes for middle infielders being allowed to get lit up, while catchers cant
this event will trigger a rule change
FREE GRIT tho
it such a dumb concept anyway....one guy gets a full speed running head start to completely blast someone while the other player has to put all his attention and concentration on catching the ball and tagging a base while completely exposing his legs to destruction....I realize and appreciate that its part of the game and it wouldn't be right to let them have free reign to turn double plays uncontested as that would look silly....but as it stands right now the guy turning the dp is incredibly exposed and defenseless
something has to change and it should have a long time ago
the take out slide is banned in college and high school
now that something bad happened to a new york team, itll be banned in mlb

Dude, STFU. I normally don't agree with people that you're an idiot, but you're sounding like one. I'll chalk it up and say you're drunk and you're mad at the fact that the championship Phillies team doesn't exist anymore and the fact Rollins and Utley are on the hated Dodgers. But as baseball fans, we've been seeing bullshtein slides for YEARS now, and this is the FIRST in almost 30 years of watching baseball that I've heard ANYONE complain about these slides.
Put some cold cream on your vagina and let the swelling go down because YOU my friend are out of line on this one.
PS. It doesn't matter that it was to the Dodgers benefit...these slides are part of the game. Sure, it's farged up someone got hurt, but these plays are part of the game. All of a sudden, because the play jeopardizes the team's chances from the #1 Media market, it's an issue. farg that. MLB is a hypocrite. shtein happens in baseball. lolol.....yeah the poor little small town of los angelos california is getting picked on
obviously it has nothing to do with market size....but it does have to do with a broken leg....commit an egregious act that doesn't result in a broken leg then its a different story...shoplifting a candy bar is different than stealing a candy bar and shooting the clerk
you are really bad at this homer thing....we all know no one in la really gives a shtein about sports and near the top of that list is you which makes your faux outrage pretty hilarious....take some lessons from the king J and get back at me
wow the astros farged this game up

IGY, I'm not outraged. I'm just asking the people that all of a sudden got their feelings hurt because of a broken leg, to relax.

That's a legal play? Looks kinda dirty to me. That is, he could have been safe, but instead went for the hit.
He ended up being ruled safe on replay. Tejeda never touched second... either.

Having games overlap is stupid too
A bit optimistic to think this game would be over by 730.
I am so pissed right now. Every game overlapped today. All 4 games on Friday and now on a Monday. Stupid MLB. Shorten this stupid season to 154 games and let the few fans they have left enjoy the playoffs.

They'll never shorten the season by minusing games but they should do more double headers so the regular season ends earlier
Double headers are horrible and they've always been horrible. 6-7+hours of baseball? No thanks. I love me some baseball, but a double header is just too much. It's fine if you need them as make up games, but other than that they blow. From an owners perspective they lose revenue and from a player perspective, that's a really long farging day.
Cespedes just killed a baseball
Mother of god
That was a shot.
Cubbies set a playoff record with 6 hr earlier....Muts might make a run at that.
i know don is 80...which is the mlb fan base...but mlb should stash as many of these games as they can against each other. they wouldnt be able to do it until the next tv deal, but they should mimic the ncaa tournament in the division series. the ratings arent strong enough to warrant spreading the games out.
each fan base will watch their team...the 1-2 million seamheads will cry, then watch anyway. in the LCS you air them separately, of course. i cannot understand how a big sporting event is starting at 100 on a monday in 2015. its asinine.
the nba and the nhl dont do this. they have games on at the same time in the 1st round of the playoffs. they dont air them in the afternoon. mlb does because .... because i have no idea.
anyway, los doyer folding on the road in the playoffs. Hoyda ass la squad. what else is new?
I don't like the afternoon games any longer.

I don't care one way or the other it doesn't concern the Phillies I just like riling you guys up.
the number of phillie fans bloggers and writers going nuts this week over this has been as disgusting a thing as ive ever seen....MOTHERfargERS HE IS NOT ON YOUR TEAM ANYMORE!
then of course all the same people are mocking jimmys terrible first at bat last night....which admittedly was horrible...you can tell jimmy heart is not in it out there...but still go to hell everyone
I'd rather see Jimmy win another WS ring then grit but Jimmy is done. Seager is clearly a better option at this point but you gotta go with experience I guess.
jimmy is definitely done probably on a skill level as well but definitely on an emotional one...you can just tell from his body language he doesnt care
hes not even in because of experience....seager started the first two games....hes in cause seager looked overmatched in LA
Yeah Seager is sitting bc he didn't hit the first two games
Hopefully some of the fire comes back for Jimmy to win tonight and then in LA to finish off the Mets
But tonight hinges on Mr Playoff Choker Kershaw
both jimmy and Utley look done. at least it isn't in red pin stripes anymore.

QuoteTo play baseball is to persevere. 162 games from the warm of spring to the cool of autumn, it's the marathon, it's the race. Playing every day for weeks on end, sun beating down, hour after hour, game after game, weeks after months after years. When you lose your ace, when you lose your bats.
When your rising star loses his life, tragically and sensically– you persevere.
This Cardinals team persevered. It took to the end of one of the most grueling seasons in history in the most competitive division in history for the Cardinals to finally cede a sweep. After every loss, on the field and on the roster, the Cardinals would not give up, they would not accept anything less than the best. They won 100 games, they won the NL Central, and they did it without Waino, Holliday, and Adams. They did it at times without Grichuk and Piscotty, and they had to finish it without Yadi. How? Garcia, Carmart, Lackey, Lynn, Wacha, and Marp and Heyward and Jhonny and Wong and Cruz and Grichuk and Piscotty and Pham and Reynolds and Moss and Rosie and Maness and Siegrist and Broxton and Villanueva, and, you know what, Matheny. And each and every one of us, too.
The playoffs don't tell you which team was best, the only thing the playoffs are good for now is giving one team a ring. Because baseball isn't about being the best in 5 games and it's not about being the best in 7 games. It sure as hell isn't about being the best in 1 game. It's about being the best in 162 games, and only one team can make that claim- the Cardinals.
100 wins in the toughest division in the history of the sport. Clinching the title of winning the toughest division in the history of the sport. That's your best team, that's your "world champion." The Cardinals- and no one else.
Sounds extremeskins-ish.
I agree the best team in baseball rarely wins it all and I also think its harder and more impressive to have the best reg season record in mlb than it is to win the ws....but unfortunately for st louis that's not the system they currently play under

No, what makes it sickening is the idiot who wrote that either doesn't understand how a playoff system works or doesn't want a playoff system at all.....just crown the team with the best record at the end of the year.
if the baseball playoffs werent so awesome id have no problem with getting rid of them....the winner of a season as long as 162 games deserves the title....but st Louis is not some team that has the best record all the time and doesn't win the world series so they should shutty as doug heffernan would say
Regular season records don't mean dick if you don't finish it off in the playoffs. And no one cares about your stupid division title either. If it did the 90's Braves would be the greatest team in the history of the planet.

the contrast between matchups is insane (for tv)
jays/royals is easily the worst possible matchup: smallest market in the game and market thats in another country and therefore doesnt even count toward ratings
cubs/mets or dodgers: most popular team and most intriguing story by a mile against a mega market power. cant possibly get any better than this.
on the plus side, fox gets the zesty matchup so farg off rupert

You can tell that baseball (a) is the oldest "American" sport in the country (TRADITION!!) and (b) originated from a British game (also known for their love of tradition and being bland and proper).
The 2 most popular sports in the country are hoops and football, both of which made a gazillion dollars by allowing their players to have fun, show off their personalities, and taunt the hell out of their opponents. Both have scaled back on the latter over the last decade, but still allow for a lot of individual focus to be put on players.
It's funny because baseball is the most individualized of all the team sports, but it's really the only sport that doesn't want players to celebrate an individual accomplishment. Hit a HR, and it's like 90% because the batter beat the pitcher. ROB, who is due up, # of outs does play a factor in what kind of pitch a batter might get, but it's still largely mono y mono. A million different things can happen to allow a RB to break a 60yd run or for a player to get to the rack and finish with a dunk that the individual had nothing to do with, but it's more acceptable for him to celebrate. Doesn't make sense.
the thing i wonder is why is it ok for a pitcher, like say papsmear or giles or smoltz to name a couple, to celebrate after stiking a guy out to end a game but OMG a guy flipped a bat after he rocked a pitch 400plus feet.
part of it is it was the 7th inning....but even in the early 90s white people and boring people every year raved at barry sanders for flipping the ball to the ref after a td
theres a ton of sports fans, republican and democrat, that just have a stick up their ass. no other way to say it than that.
you damn kids, get off my lawn !
I loved what sanders did too....barry and deion...problem is so many people only like barrys way
one thing TO said that was on always on point, you wanna stop me from celebrating, stop me from scoring.
I don't know any other way of saying it. I was trolling before and if you didn't catch it the second time, you should really consider driving super fast-like into the nearest brick wall.
eddie v is dealin

Yep, that 6th inning where he threw allmost 20 pitches to walk Donaldson and Bautista with no outs was almost a complete disaster yet he strikes out Encarnacion and Tulo to get out of it.
Good point.
He's always had good stuff but can never get beyond just having good stuff. He will throw gems and then have periods of maddening inconsistency.
Encarnacion is probably out for a little bit. Wonder how that affects them.
I'm also curious to see if Price can be a lock down stud today
Price is owning the shtein out of the Royals right now.
how much does he make this winter
Question is...how much are the Yankees going to pay him?
Royals finally getting to Price in the 7th.
And now they're up 4-3.
price pulled a cliff lee
Pretty nice meltdown there, Price
Now he'll only get $160M instead of $180
Royals take the lead and no one flips a bat.
THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT WITH CLASS!
I don't know if it was Reynolds who said it but once the shadows disappeared Price became hittable. It's also his third time thru the lineup but his pitch count was really low.
Also - that's a freaking gorgeous stadium.

I'm ok with the Mets. I love ya bionic but my left coast hatred towards teams like los doyers and the Lakers is almost on par, not quite, but close, to my hatred towards the Cowboys, Racists, Celtics & Yankees. I don't like the Mets but WTF, the bums had an incredible window from 2007 - 2011 to win at least three but blew that to shtein right before our eyes.
Mets will probably take full advantage of their 5 year window. I'm just getting mentally and emotionally prepared.

R.A. Dickey has delivered double digit wins to the Blue Jays for the last three seasons. Sure he's not Syndergaard or the Cy Young winner he was the year before that trade, but at least they got something back.

well that was a pretty good game.
It's gotta be pretty frustrating as a hitter to face guys like Volquez, Herrera, and Davis, for 11 innings, all throwing mid/upper 90s, and then take hacks at a junk baller like Chris Young who tops out at 90.

Yeah. Game Four in 1980. Flipped Noles in the 5th inning, I believe, after Larry Christensen has been shelled for five runs in one-third inning. Then Pete Rose gets into it with KC Manager Jim Frey. The Phils lost that game, but came back to win Games Six and Seven.
I was nine at the time, and naive enough to believe that kind of shtein happened every year.

Wright farged up by fielding that. Flores is able to keep him closer. But Wright did look him back. Duda choked. He was dead with a good throw
Ballsy play by Mr Kacie McDonnell -- he broke right away as soon as Wright threw

Duda isn't awful with the arm - I'd say average. But I think he took that huge secondary lead once he saw Wright go to field it. Wright has his back to him and even when he looks him back he knows Wright isn't eating it to run him back.
So he takes a huge chance. If he fails then they have two games at home to win it.

Cool to see KC win it - they had some really zesty teams over the years so to see them win it is nice
its only nice because you dont care about them
im sure someone jackoff from minnesota wouldve said the same thing about the mets had they won
KC has always been a watch from afar team in the AL for me - because I lived in that area for four years. Saw many games there and had a bunch of players do meet and greets at the base and for our traveling ball teams. Remember having my mom go get me Kevin Appier and Tom Gordon's autographs once because they were on base and I had school.
Twins, funny you mention Minny, have been another team I pay attention to because of how much I loved the 91 series.
Their Single A team is in Wilmington and I worked there when a lot of these guys played there--Moose, Hosmer, Duffy, etc...so it's pretty cool to see them win.

It's hard for me to take any league or sport seriously when they vote guys as MVPs and their team didn't even make the postseason.
Philosophically it makes sense. One guy doesn't mean shtein in baseball. A guy could hit 0.420 and 80 homers and still be on a last place team through no fault of his own. In basketball, you put Steph Curry on the Sixers and they are no longer the Sixers. Part of his expected role would be carrying the team.
I look at it like this....whether you miss the playoffs by 20 games or by virtue of a tie breaker, you've brought the same value to your team either way, which was not enough to move onto the 2nd season and compete for a chip. So how can that be the most valuable player in the entire league?
Leagues need to have a separate award for best player, which could be anyone.
there is no most valuable player in baseball its only the best...like qb said baseball is an individual sport played by teams much more than it is a team sport...in fact it wouldn't be uncommon in baseball to take the best player off a playoff team and that team still make the playoffs
i dont even pay attention to the letters mvp in baseball....its meaningless
harper won only because there was legit no other candidate
but thats kinda the point in baseball
no other candidates is def true...but his year was off the charts and would have won in more years than not
possibly, but generally they side with someone who made the playoffs
its just that there was no one remotely qualified among the playoff teams

i could see greinke getting 4/5 130/160
He's older, but he's still the top pitcher on the market. Price got 30mil/year for 3 years (looking at it that way since Price can opt out at that point). So Greinke can use that as a starting point and work his way up, which is where you have him. He's probably going to get more per year, but with less years. That's still big time fap material.
i could see him getting a higher aav...but ill be really suprised if he gets 200 and ill be shocked if he gets more than price...also you can only look at as 3/90 if it was a team option...but baseball money is 100% guaranteed so price got 7/217

that lackey contract is hilarious....im shocked that theo would do something like that....he was touched by the godly franchise and had a miracle year....he was done two years ago and will get murdered in wrigley
cant believe grienke got six years....they are arizona so they had to over pay but good god
6/around 195
I'm shocked he got six too but I guess Arizona had to do that to entice him over a more prestigious club.
And I've hated Lackey ever since he divorced his wife when she had cancer. farg that dood

Lol no clue but that's a zesty thing to do
Rosenthal says 6/206 for Grienke
staying with someone you hate cause they have cancer is stupid...even worse faking you like someone cause they have cancer...she probably didnt want him around anyway
i dont know if its on here but i called arizona overpaying for a pitcher
they just got a new tv contract....they love their offense with pollack and goldschmidt....their pitching stinks....they are super jealous of san fran and la
seemed too obvious theyd do something silly like this

Did I understand correctly that a decent chunk of Grienke's salary is deferred until after the 6 yrs are up and they'll pay him for 5 extra years? Could have sworn I read that somewhere but can't find the article.
Anyway, I knew he'd get more than $30mil/year, but I didn't think he'd get that much.....34.3mil/year avg. That's nuts.
Samardzja to SF for 5yrs $90m

the yearly avg makes sense....he was going to have get the highest aav this offseason...the 200+ total value is what completely surprised me

Starlin Castro to the Yankees for Brendan Ryan and Adam Warren
Zobrist to the Cubs...4/$56M
Can someone logically explain why Jason Heyward could get a deal for ridiculous money like $160-$180m??
Just a guess, but salaries in general are exploding. There's a lot of money chasing not a lot of outfielders, and of that bunch he's the youngest with the best defense. Jayson Werth pulled down well over $100M as a guy already in his 30s, and that's when salaries were smaller than they are now.
Yeah I just don't see how what he's done justifies that kind of money. Werth's deal was insane too.

hes a very good player, hes 26, teams are flush with cash and most of all, players of this caliber arent on the FA market all that often.
i know you have to hate him because at one point he was associated with the braves, but hes quite good at the baseballs.

players of his caliber will hit but almost never at 26.. young and good is a super enticing combo...i mean in theory hes still going to get a lot better...it will start happening more and more as players start younger than they used to in mlb...but over history you would almost never see a 26 year old as good as him hit free agency
I don't hate him. You're striking out a lot with your assumptions.
I don't think he's worth what he's asking. Stark said he's looking for $24m for 8-9yrs
thats right around the going rate for a very good position player. pujols, hamilton, reyes, fielder all got that on the open market.
a 26 year old outfielder with a 784 career ops and + defense is going to get that

I remember you floating the idea of the Phillies signing him. So not even you and your sabr powers knew he'd be trying to make ridiculous money
And I'm fine with people getting paid...when they deserve it
i wouldnt mind if the phillies signed him, but it would be a considerable risk. they would really have to be sure that these prospects are going to hit by 17 and 18.
ultimately, its not quite worth it. hes good, but not mike trout once in a generation good. and also, under no circumstances is he signing with a team thats going to lose 90 games this season.
as for "deserve," let me quote my girls snoop...deserve aint got nothin to do with it
HOF heyward to the cubs
the best fans st louis feed is off the charts right now
lolol STL fans are the worst
and 8/$184M is stupid...have fun with that contract, Cubs. Big market or not he ain't worth it

is there a player associated or at one point associated with a rival of a philly team that you like/think is really good
That contract might suck 6 years from now. They'll have to console themselves with their three World Series wins between now and then.
he will be 32 in six years.....how would it suck then?....thats almost prime for baseball
if it sucks in six years then it will suck in 2 or 4...it will mean he didnt get an ounce better and maybe even regressed from where he is now
You don't think there's more uncertainty about whether a player will be good 6 years from now than 2 years from now? That makes no sense.
I'm not even saying it's a bad deal. He's a great piece for the Cubs. My point is the Cubs won't even particularly care how he plays at 32 if he lives up to his potential over the next few years. The Cubs window is open now and they are trying to line up the final pieces.
i dont see the odds being higher that the contract will suck in 2-3 years anymore than 5-6 years...in fact it it should be better in six because the market will have far surpassed the aav by then and he will still be in or near his prime
if he was 32 right now or if this was another sport other than baseball id agree with your premise
Apparently the Nats and Cards offered over $200m

or are you saying you care more about how they feel than how their team actually made out?
.....why can't he just enjoy making fun of their fanbase blowing up on twitter without you trying to evaluate him?
Yeah exactly.
I'm just talking shtein.
I mean if you and lil guy wanna love the fact a .290/13/60 dude gets $24m go right ahead.
I think it's a huge overpay and I like seeing the fraud ass Cards fans whine.
you love them whining and yet say they made out like bandits...it just proves what ive been saying about you for years you care way more about talking shtein to other fanbases...co workers...friends...phantom fans on the internet than you do about actual sports
you are a wash or dallas fan...if that makes you happy then more power to you...good luck
Not even close.
Sports is pretty much life. I just enjoy talking shtein to other fans.
And I especially like seeing certain fan bases get shafted
how did they get shafted if you yourself said theyd be idiots for paying that kind of money for HOFH?
Sometimes I wonder if you're doing this just for the sake of arguing?
I dislike STL fans
They lose a player who they wanted to keep. He went to their hated rival.
They're bitching up a storm and showing themselves to be the awful fans they are despite living in "baseball heaven".
As evidenced below.
That amusement of seeing them cry has zero to do with the fact he's overpaid. That's a separate issue.
Real tweets from the idiots

he was 15th in war last year...in all of baseball
HUGE overpay but lololol at the cards for not overpaying him!
You not getting this isn't really shocking now that I think about it
You're still not separating the two. Keep on keepin' on
you are right...i really dont get it...cause to me if you truly hate cardinal fans as much as you profess then the best way to make fun of them would be for their team to do stupid stuff...yet you are saying that their team did something very smart today...which tells me you care more about their fans being salty than you do about the actual sports happenings going on
The transaction of Heyward doesn't bother me. He could've gone anywhere. But the fact that sabrmetrics tricked people into thinking he's worth close to $200m is funny. I mean look at lil guy trumpeting out what his war was.
I like seeing STL fans angry. That's why I never want them to win
explain to me why jason heyward isnt good...so far youve brought out an antiquated stat nobody associated with the game cares about.
use your brilliant baseball mind thats jumped to such conclusions as juan pierre is awesome
I'm not saying he isn't good. You suffer from the same all or nothing mentality as your big brother.
He's a good player.
However he's not $100m nor even a $200m good player
whoa wait a second....hes not even a 100 mil dollar player?
why shouldnt he be paid like the top position player on the open marker is paid
explain
I don't believes he's a $100m player, no. I believe that stratosphere should be for truly elite players and I don't believe he's one. He's good. He's not great.
I'm all for free market and getting what someone is offering you. If someone is offering me an insane contract I'm not saying no.
You two can argue all you want but Jason Heyward isn't worth the deal he just got.
Just because he happens to be the best available doesn't mean he's worth insane money. Wanna go back and look at all the bad contracts over time and see how many were worth it? Just because they were the best available on the open market?
Part of that's just baseball economics, Phreak. I'm not sure I believe he's elite, either, but he is probably the best OF on the market. And, like Igy said, he's young.
Of course, that baseball (and sports) economy is also pricing out a large percentage of the fanbase, but the millionaire players and billionaire owners don't really care about that, as long as they get theirs.

I agree and the money is getting silly. By this scale Trout is going to get half a bil!
Heyward is a good player. I have a problem placing him in the top tier of elite players and when a contract of such value is given to a player I feel he should be elite.
im not talking about stats.....his back of the baseball card stats, which nobody associated with the game values, are one thing and his advanced metrics are another.
im talking about his actual baseball skill. explain. also still looking for a philly rival player you like but ill take 1 thing at a time
his war is skewed by some over valued defensive numbers but hes still probably the number one or two or third best defensive outfielder in the game and is a really efficient offensive player
did i also mention hes 26?
he should get better while salaries over the next eight years will lap his deal maybe two time
im not saying right here right now he isnt overpaid...but jesus its an eight year deal....and theres much more chance down the road that its a complete steal than it is throwing away money
His contract is pretty much on par with his value/production, imo. In sports in general, but especially in baseball, you're almost never going to get even return value on any individual contract. Maybe you do for a portion of the contact, if you're lucky, but that's about it. Young players might exceed their salary for 4 or 5 years. Then they become free agents and sign mega deals that they likely won't live up to.
This is the economics of sports these days. Contacts have far less to do with on field value and more to do with how much teams have available to spend. These are multi-billion dollar leagues, so the money has to go somewhere. Might as well go to the players instead of the owners.
Also, it's not like there's just one number he's worth to all teams. The Cubs have a cheap young core that he fits into perfectly. I wouldn't have been super pissed if the Phillies got Heyward for that money, but the team has a lot of other things it could use the money for, and it has to be significantly more careful with expensive long term commitments. For the Cubs, this deal is pretty great. You have to be willing to overspend in a couple of areas to assemble a team that could be playoff caliber for an extended period of time like they are set up for.
There's that, too. Each team is going to value a guy differently. Obviously, for a team like the Phillies that isn't closer to being a contender, you don't throw that kind of money at him. But if you're the Cubs and are not only a contender, but your team basically prints money and you're also trying to get rid of a 100+ year old hex, then you do it. If they win just 1 WS, they could have paid him 180billion and if would still be worth it for them. (slight hyperbole)
Cueto to SF....6/$130M
Their rotation is now Bumgarner/Cueto/Samardzija/Cain/Peavy
Good thing KC took 1 of 2 because good baseball players are expensive as farg and the Royals just don't have the bank roll to keep guys if big market teams really want them.
based on the tabulation of the revealed ballots, trevor hoffman wont be getting in the hof this year
what
People of your ilk! Your sportswriter colleagues!
I am waiting to see which dope decides to no include Mariano Rivera on his ballot
lol
Can't wait to see how many vote against Griffey.
The answer to that is three.
Three "sports" writers didn't have Griffey on their ballot. He was at 437/440
Highest % ever though.
It's just him and Piazza
Tim Raines is gaining ground. He should make it next year and so will Bagwell & Hoffmann.
i dont know why people are drawing a line at bonds, mcgwire and clemens but relented on piazza and will soon on bags
either it is or it isnt
everyone knows bagwell and piazza did them but did they get caught like the other three
i wouldn't vote for any of them but its an understandable difference
The only "reason" to not vote someone unanimously is because no one has ever been voted unanimously. Babe Ruth wasn't. Hank Aaron wasn't. So no one ever will be.
This is the logic of baseball writers. Idiots.
a reason given was that they knew griffey would get in, so they went with 10 that needed them
but thats just an excuse to keep the sanctimonious babe ruth suckling
Whoever did that also knew that some guys on his top 10 list had no shot of getting in. So even if you take it seriously, that excuse makes no sense.
it doesnt...but its just a lost cause at this point
why not just have a yes or no box next to every name? i saw olbermann tweet that. god forbid these old farts at the bbwa change their process
cal was the last chance at 100....if he didn't get it no one will
Griffey's first 10 years are unassailable. Most players don't get in based off of 10 year production, though. No doubt he was a first ballot guy and probably deserved unanimous selection.
Halladay's tweet about Clemens and Bonds reads like a curmudgeonly old man. Clemens fired back and accused Doc of using amphetamines.
