Just a guess, but salaries in general are exploding. There's a lot of money chasing not a lot of outfielders, and of that bunch he's the youngest with the best defense. Jayson Werth pulled down well over $100M as a guy already in his 30s, and that's when salaries were smaller than they are now.

hes a very good player, hes 26, teams are flush with cash and most of all, players of this caliber arent on the FA market all that often.

i know you have to hate him because at one point he was associated with the braves, but hes quite good at the baseballs.

players of his caliber will hit but almost never at 26.. young and good is a super enticing combo...i mean in theory hes still going to get a lot better...it will start happening more and more as players start younger than they used to in mlb...but over history you would almost never see a 26 year old as good as him hit free agency

thats right around the going rate for a very good position player. pujols, hamilton, reyes, fielder all got that on the open market.

a 26 year old outfielder with a 784 career ops and + defense is going to get that

i wouldnt mind if the phillies signed him, but it would be a considerable risk. they would really have to be sure that these prospects are going to hit by 17 and 18.

ultimately, its not quite worth it. hes good, but not mike trout once in a generation good. and also, under no circumstances is he signing with a team thats going to lose 90 games this season.
