The lone bright spot. When he was drafted they said he did everything good but nothing great. What they didn't mention is he can flat out fly. I also thought Nitty played well, the OT goal aside the game could have easily gotten out of hand in the 2nd. He needs to be the starter for now. Eminger also had a solid showing lastnight. Timonen has looked terrible so far and Coburn hasn't been much better.

He almost had an awful giveaway in front of the goal but other than that he looked very good.

he sucked ass to start the year last year. He's a slow starter. This team is not going back to where it was last year, they just dont have goaltending. Biron isnt the answer, he got hot last year but fell apart against the Pens.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC0TatWQDls
Cote vs Goddard. Great scrap, Goddard gets the Decision, Cote can take a punch
that was a great fight but yeah goddard got the best of him
cotes wildness hurt him in that fight...his punches are round and come from so far away...goddards are so compact and straight
QuoteThe Philadelphia Flyers announced today they have reached a minor league affiliate agreement with the Mississippi Sea Wolves of the ECHL for the 2008-09 season, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
yea! redneck hockey.
LOL at St Pierre and Brad Watson reffing the flyers game, they still are horrible. I was actually rooting for Tucker when he was giving the refs shtein
is nick mcgoo still refing? from my days watching hockey i remember him being off the charts awful.
he retired, and these guys are way worse. 17 penalties, about 5-6 between both teams warranted
They continue to look like shtein and Biron should be relegated to backup duty at this point. The D is a joke and the forwards aren't playing much better. They were beat handidly by a team that was 0-3.

St. Pierre used to ref in the ECHL, and he was awful there. Can't imagine how he managed to get placed in the NHL.
Flyers Suck. Nitty was good, but they lost in OT again
Went to bed at 3-1 but knew I'd wake up and see they blew it
Might as well pull a Pens at this point and go for Tavares
Downie (and Ross) sent back to the Phantoms. No word on a callup yet.......probably Giroux unless they signed Sundin or some crazy move
Is Sundin an FA at this point or do the Leafs still own his rights?
Actually just saw this save in another Flyers thread, I was out at this point but this is one of the most amazing saves ever.
Nitty stones the sharks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSHDscWmrC0)
Look at all the Hoyda fans whining about Upshalls hit in the comments. :-D
when did hockey season start?
Not sure. The Flyers don't appear to have won any games, so I'm assuming they haven't played yet.
the Flyers D is easily the worst in the league. I can't believe they miss Smith and Hatcher as much as they do. Pathetic doesn't begin to describe this group.
yeah, it's embarrassing how bad of a group they are

i have no problem with that
alberts is farging awful
look at all the dopes at this game
flyers tied it up with a minute left and are going to a shootout if anyone cares

The rare Flyers shootout win I remember was when Briere won it in Buffalo.
Rumor has it Briere has a sports hernia.
Pull a Pens, tank, draft Tavares or Heidman, fire Stevens. Seems like an easy enough plan to me.
First win of the season on the road vs. the Devils. This team is bass ackwards.

yeah, they would still lose out on the lottery
i wouldnt be suprised if they played better without briere...well they cant play worse...but what they need is to tighten up in the defensive zone and briere being out will def help with that...not just because hes terrible in his own zone but psychologically maybe the team will tighten up because they know they arent going to score as much

i was just gonna post that, i had the game DVR'd and watched it last night. Defensively they looked much better, Goaltending really let them down up until halfway thru the 2nd. Richards is the GAWD, he played only 20 Mins (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8470617&view=log) but was all over the place and had 4 assists. Nodl is better than Downie no doubt.
great saturday hockey today, 5 or 6 fights so far in the Flyers game.

Hahaha...
that was just weird. they won a minute after that
Maybe I'm a degenerate Philly fan but I find that shtein hilarious.
same here
And the legend grows... someday you know ESPN will report it as a live nuclear device.
Up 5-0 in the 3rd vs. the Thrashers
7-0 shutout win.
That game was strange. It didn't feel like the Flyers were really dominating all that much during play, but then they just seemed to score every five minutes or so...
Then again, I was also working on school stuff, so I was only half paying attention.
Niitty was ridiculous as usual against Lehtonen. He's 10-0 with a 1.3 gaa i think in his career against Atlanta.

Upgrade over Nodl/Downie, some thoughts that its really just a threat to the team by Holmgren to get better defensively. Macnow was reporting Shannahan said give him 7-10 days to decide. Basically the flyers are lowballing him because of the cap issues. If he wants on, its to hopefully win and the perks i guess of playing for the flyers org. The other main team in talks is supposedly the Penguins

Booooooooooooooooooooo
I liked what I saw from Eminger in the playoffs last year and was rooting for him. I was hoping he'd be another Coburn. He needed to step up his game to prove the Caps wrong and he really didn't. Downie was expendable, and I think he's a marked man as long as he's in a Flyers uniform.
Carle is a good pickup.
good riddance to downie....what a POS...hell be a solid minor leaguer for the next 15 years
eminger got benched in the playoffs last year by a team whos defense was their weak spot for a reason....this trade most likely will be a wash as all three players will be failures but the flyers win for today in that they at least get some sort of upside
Eminger was benched by Glen Hanlon before Boudreu got hired. Boudreu came on and kept him benched and only played him when there were injuries that forced him into the lineup. Eminger has all the tools, but under pressure in corners he freaks out with the puck, where as Sbisa is calm as can be.
Briere is back tonight, 2 weeks after Sports Hernia surgery, Kevin Curtis is a bitch.
Josh Gratton is called up for the game, Cote is out. Cote has been battling Dizziness and not feeling right since playing the Devils and getting hit from behind into the boards, farging amazing that the flyers still cant diagnose concussions after all the shtein over the years. Cote has fought 4 times since that hit.
Carle is going to play tonight, Downie is in the AHL, Eminger should be in the lineup. They play TB tonight.
Flyers are farged cap wise, 350k left, and Gratton cost them 550k just for this game if he stays up. They will probably be making another trade today. Also Hatcher is done, he skated, his knee blew up like a baloon(his own words), and he's been told he needs knee replacements.

So they're talking about this on DNL right now....when Jones and Parent come back....who are your 6 defense men?
Do you plug Jones in and send Parent to the Phantoms for the time being? Or is he automatically in over someone like Alberts?
I don't think there's anyway you send Sbisa down at this point...he's a player plain and simple.
Sbisa isnt going anywhere. I'd almost bet you would see Lupul moved with Jones at that point. Alberts makes less, and plays a game similar to jones.
Refs have sucked balls tonight, blew the whistle way too early where the flyers scored a loose puck but the whistle had blown. The Upshall tripping call was so bad the Dallas announcers called it bad, and Gratton getting the only penalty with a douche like Avery running into Biron. I want to see Avery paralyzed at some point of his career
carter is really coming into his own this year...the biggest difference is his confidence which has spawned emotion in the kid who up until this year looked like a scared robot
yep, he's become a man. He's also grown into his body, both mentally and physically.
Carter has the best wrist shot in the NHL, it's nasty unfair like a Lidge slider.
Anyone else excited about the fact that Gagne seems to be becoming more of a playmaker as well as a scorer? And with the fact that his brains aren't complete mush?

does anyone else not believe that gagne had dehydration
something strange was happening because why does Holmgren have to update dehydration after the game. I can see them covering up concussion symptoms so no one takes a cheap shot. We'll see in the next couple of games.

Timmy P:
QuoteSimon Gagne is NOT on the ice this morning at Skate Zone in Voorhees, although I am told by Flyer personnel he is in the building.
Gagne mysteriously left Thursday's game early in the second period with what the team is calling "dehydration."
Gagne says he either has the flu or a stomach virus, since he has been unable to eat for two days. I'm hoping that's the case. But GM Paul Holmgren said it was merely dehydration and nothing else. Gagne said he felt very sluggish.
We all know that dehydration and sluggishness are classic concussion symptoms. We also know that an athlete who has suffered post-concussion syndrome can experience concussion symptoms months or years later for no apparent reason because it is a brain injury.
Gagne says he will play tomorrow. I don't think so. Just my opinion.
RIP simon
the medical staff is laughable. dont let him play tomorrow even if he wants to
they had him fighting a bear today as part of his rehab
Richards with a short handed goal and Carter with an OT winner. I sense a pattern here.
Also of importance, Gagne played and assisted on Richards' goal.
Vaananen has played like shtein since his injury. These games are a farging bore.

Gagne/God in the shootout
Brind'Amour stoned....FLYERS WIN :yay
And they win the shootout. Hooray.
1. That was a hell of a comeback.
2. The shootout still sucks.
The East is looking way strong this year. There are at least 4 teams that are strong candidates for the cup....possibly 5. I still think it'll come down to The Pens/Flyers again to see who gets to lose to the Sharks/Red Wings.
I'm cool with that.
That comeback was ridiculous. And in addition to getting the hat trick, Hartnell beat that ass in a fight too.
I was at a sports bar about 3 miles from the RBC Center. Needless to say, the "Caniacs" did not appreciate my incessant LET'S GO FLYERS chants. I didn't stop after the game was over either.

LS on Flyersphans started a thread that a radio station in Canada is reporting the Flyers have a conditional deal in place for Sean Avery. I'm calling BS so we'll see.
I farging hate Sean Avery but I would LOVE for him to be a Flyer. Go figure.
It was a bs rumor to see if Eklund from Hockeybuzz would pick it up and report it. Internet gayness.
Gay.

does anyone have any extra tickets or something for tuesdays game? im lookin for a birthday present for my dad and a sixers game would be an insult.

if youre not full of shtein like youre with 99% of tickets and games you supposedly want then i can probably get them...the one caveat would be you would have to go pick them up...i think somewhere in bucks country
however there are many other games available thruout the season...might be easier to pick another one and i can just have it mailed to you
how much we talkin here
and yea id do it later in the year, i generally give him fathers day/birthday gifts at their convenience, not at the correct time
$52/pair
I can check with my buddy who has season tickets. 180 for the pair with a parking pass. Seats are Sec 108 row 25 seats 9 and 10.

Since we are talking about Crosby's flagry where MDS can see it. He actually punched Valibik in the coinpurse
btw, it's relatively easy to get cheap tickets for most games, i was at the avalanche game and the place was 75% full
47 saves by Niittymaki and the Flyers won by 6. Carter with 2 more goals including another shorthanded one, and Hartnell had another hat trick...
Nitty had 26 saves in the first period, and they came out of the 1st with a lead, that was the game right there.
farg...I slept through a good one :boom
riley fedoruk took maybe the worst beating ive ever seen in hockey today
he got farged up twice bad
second time was just a regular L and not even that bad...he mostly just ended up on the bottom...the first one tho was frightening...like i was literally yelling at the refs thru the tv to stop it like it was a boxing match
Brashear's fist took the worst of it.
+1 for Riley.
gratton had a decent fight
Brash was playing dirty, im amazed at how he got away with that hit from behind
Carter takes over the NHL goal lead but the Flyers are losing 2-1 after 2
Flyers get it to a shootout and had a 1-0 lead with Carter up to clinch it........and they lose again
Gagne hit from behind, and looks like he separated his shoulder based on him skating off, or something arm related, and scrambled eggs for brains i wouldnt doubt
i know bieska is a tough customer but damn richards is fighting like a little bitch this year....hes scared to get hit or something...he used to throw with abandon....now he holds on ducks his head pokes and prods and basically does nothing
Gagne's injury is being described as an upper body injury, we'll probably know more today. Unreal that there was no call on that hit. I thought Giroux played well.
The Canucks are huge
im with sb looked to def be a shoulder when he was going off...but the shoulder is a little to close to his bowl of jello for my taste
Timmy P:
QuoteSimon Gagne's right shoulder injury is not as serious as it looked on the TV.
Just got off the phone with Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren. I am reporting on CSNPhilly.com that Gagne has a mild shoulder strain and should only miss a week. No dislocation or separation.
Also, Randy Jones is hurting in the hip ... Click here for the details.

farg Randy Jones, trade his ass to Columbus with his lover Hitch
Good to hear about Gagne, now you just have to worry about his gelatinous noggin. Richards dropped them as he should in that case, but he's gotta put up more of a fight. I think he hasnt been focusing on that part of his game and its showing.
if anyone is killing time later(or DVRing it like me), at 730pm tonight, Team USA and JVR are playing Team Canada in the World Jr tourney on NHL Network. It's in HD, and should be a good game to see if JVR brings the full effort. He's been basically quiet, yet has a ton of points so far.
I thought JVR looked fine, don't know what all the people on FP are watching. He had 7 pts. in 3 games prior to lastnight and they said he was struggling. Tavares is unreal, the amount of NHL ready talent on the ice lastnight was unreal.
beautiful sports watching these next two nights
you get two 8pm ish sixer games which both lead right into two 10pm ish flyer games
i think the eagles are on this weekend too.
Not in the Twin Cities area they aren't.
I fell asleep in the beginning of the 3rd but apparently the Flyers won in a shootout.
tied for first in the division

STAPLES Center tonight.....usually has a good Flyers crowd there. And the Ducks' Corey Perry might be getting a 4-game suspension for elbowing Giroux in the head last night...
The elbow to Giroux's head looked like Pronger's elbow to Franzen two years ago. Giroux is doubtful for the game tonight supposedly
i love sixer flyer 1030 starts...gives you something great to watch into the wee hours
According to Ed Moran JVR isnt sure if he's going to leave college after this year, and Holmgren isnt happy. Also, i cant bring up youtube anymore at work, but JVR had a ridiculous goal against Slovakia in the WJ's this year where he came in with the puck from the left on the goalie, and pulled the puck between his legs and shot behind his left leg, it was ridiculous.
Flyers might get killed tonight... http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2009/01/rivalry_what_rivalry.html?wprss=dcsportsbog
QuoteFlyers Coach on Boudreau's Comments
Bruce Boudreau has had plenty to say about the Flyers in recent weeks, so it seemed only fair to give Philly coach John Stevens a chance to respond. I swung by Philly's optional morning skate this morning, and was there for Stevens's remarks to a small gathering of media. You could probably accuse us of baiting him into a response, so here's the full text of the Boudreau-related questions.
And let's be honest, having both the Cavs and the Flyers in this building within a three-day span isn't bad for ratings.
John, Boudreau apparently advised his club about how, in his words, you guys "piled it on" last time. Do you talk to your team before the game tonight about that last game, and knowing that they're out for bear in this game because of what happened?
Well, when aren't they out for bear? We don't need any more motivation than the fact that we pull a Flyers jersey on, to be honest with you. We thought last game they would come out hard, and they did, because we ended their season the year before. And now they've got a record that speaks for itself at home, they're a very good team at home. And Ovechkin's been extremely hot, and they're playing well right now. So I'm sure the fact that we beat them the way we did last time, and the fact that we ended their season last year will serve as motivation for them. You know, there's no question we're gonna have to come out here ready to play.
This is what he actually said, 'They were probably bummed out that their tough guy got beat up twice, so they started coming after our guys.'
Who said that?
Bruce said that.
Bruce, he shouldn't speak about tough guys. You know, Riley Cote's one of the toughest guys in the league, and there's not many guys who would take on Brashear two times in a hockey game. So I have nothing but respect for Donald Brashear and I've got nothing but respect for Riley Cote. They're both tough guys and they deserve a lot of credit for the job that they do.
Boudreau also said what goes around comes around, he thought that you guys piled it on....
You know what, you guys can take this Boudreau stuff and you guys can take it somewhere else. I'm not getting drawn into any tit-for-tat stuff. I mean, I don't know where this is going. Bruce, he coaches the Washington Capitals. I don't care what he says. I've got my team to get ready here. This is obviously an important game, it's a hard game, and I don't care what he said, to be honest with you. He can say what he wants. Our team plays the way we play; we're a stand-up, honest hockey team. And he can save that stuff for the media outside of me, because I don't really care to hear it.
Boudreau, this AM, was typically restrained.
"They've got a lot of injuries on their team," Boudreau said. "That's what the newspapers keep saying. But they're not talking how many injuries we had when we played them. Poor Philly."
holy shtein the caps have lost one game at home this entire season
RED ARMY... Their fans suck ass, they dont know what the farg is going on, even after all of these years

considering the circumstances the flyers did themselves good tonight...very good road effort with all the injuries and coming off a long trip...\

Overcoming 5 PPs to your 3 is one thing, having to overcome playing 25% of the game shorthanded is another. The Flyers seem to thrive on killing penalties though, it seems to give them a spark.
there might be one...maybe two games a year in the four major sports that is truly deterrmined by the refs (denver sd I might have been one this year) so its beyond me why fans get so worked up over it
Flyers are 3rd in the league in penalty minutes (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/stats/byteam?cat=teamstats&sort=408) and are bottom 3 in power play opportunities (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/stats/byteam?cat=misc&conference=NHL&year=season_2008&cut_type=0&sort=410) - largest margin of calls for/against in the league by a longshot.

for real, he cant be the least bit objective. I can at least differentiate when calls are right. Chief has gone soft in every way possible. Lastnights game was on CSN
we live in maryland...it was on cn8
Since CN8 basically went away, i've noticed they have hockey games on every night now.
yeah last night i thought the flyers were on because it was philly...but then after the flyers postgame show they went right to san jose and calgary
the new cn8 is showing random hockey games that were on all the csns and re showing college basketball games that they broadcasted. i think they showed the temple penn game like 4 times. there was a nice shot of my jeans in there.

yep, Jones should have been cut, he sucks more than an AC whore
I would have cut Metropolit, he can't finish to save his life and doesn't give you as much as Dowd did in the intangibles department.
Powe is a cheaper version of Metropolit, i still dont know why they signed him when they had Downie on the team at the time.
I just didn't understand it from a financial standpoint and I like what I've seen from Powe. I don't think they can get any takers for Jones.
Jones needs to get injured again, he is so bad its sickening. He cant shoot the puck without hitting someones shins in front of him, he cant defend one on one and refuses to hit anyone, shtein the hit on Bergeron was all Patweece's fault

...who had surgery and is out another four weeks.
If there is one thing as certain as death and taxes it's this: There is always something new and intriguing going on with the Flyers and it most often has to do with injuries and possible comebacks from aging free-agent superstars.
In a conference call that started as an update on today's surgery that will keep Danny Briere off the ice for a minimum of 4 weeks, general manager Paul Holmgren said he has inquired about the health of Peter Forsberg.
That relevation came at the end of an interview and didn't actually sound a news item. But being Forsberg, and now that the Flyers are without Briere for at least the next 11 games, it is news that will make headlines across the hockey world.
The way the 3rd line has been playing lately, they really don't need him back right this minute.
Phantoms tough guy Garrett Klotz got knocked the farg out lastnight. It was so bad he went into a seizure on the ice and had to be stretchered off. Here's a short clip. (http://watch.tsn.ca/clip132997#clip132997) from TSN. I hope someone uploads a better angle soon and the entire fight.

wings get a 3.7 in detroit, but pistons get a 3.9.
the southern teams barely even crack a 0.5. farging bettman.
i dont know how much csn not being on directv factors into it (like if someone watching a wings game on nhl package in seattle gets factored into the ratings), but it could be something.
I consider myself to be a marginal hockey fan. That said, I'd be more of a fan-- well, if I got more Flyers games in my area-- but also if the games were more prominently featured. pathetic effort

what about the 6:18 edit

lay off manigraso, dude was probably watching him some nadal-federer
i passed out to that around 530, 20 minutes after seeing my roomate lying spread eagle in some girls bed. oh i wish i got a picture of that.
ha
what the hell is that
sd's last name. its possible i butchered it but i wrote manigraso and the filter came out as that.
you butchered the hell out of it
My daughter decided to get up and I couldn't go back to sleep, passed back out around 7:30 when the g/f got her ass up .
Spiza sent to juniors. does that mean he can't be recalled to Flyers this season?
he can be recalled at any point, its just so he can get playing time. The league needs to let players under 20 play in the AHL

My understanding was that once he went back to juniors, he can't be called back until the juniors season is over. There are exceptions for injury, but otherwise he's there for the balance of the season.
tonight - celtics @ sixers
tomorrow - bruins @ flyers
saturday - flyers @ bruins
Unless Matt pulls himself together and finds a way to Boston this weekend, I've got an extra for the Flyers/Bruins game.
The Bruins are ridiculous this year, and unless they paralyze Bergeron again, the flyers are gonna get blown out of the building
makes sense...they got blown out by st louis
That was them thinking they would win against the worst team in the Western Conf. just by showing up.
Flying overnight from Tampa and half the team having the flu sorta contributed to that
lol tampa to stl is like an hour and a half flight isnt it?
on a chartered jet no less.
the travel excuse is generally a lame one. its not like their sitting in coach at 2am going from jfk to lax and have to play that night.
stop babying them easy
From everything I've read, the flu bug is real.
Coburn, Jones, and Biron were all out with it, and I believe a couple of others played that were affected by it.
Heck, even Kukkonen played.
its a bogus excuse anyway but it really doesnt hold weight against stl...maybe if they were playing the caps or bruins
i seriously dont know how im gonna take these anouncers for a whole game....jack edwards is a farging travesty
yes he is. Great HD broadcast every time, but Edwards needs to die a horrible death.
dont watch regular season hockey?
the flyers made the playoffs. done.
LOL at Edwards talking about the Goaltender Interference call, saying it was legal and that Biron was outside of the crease. He fargs up with his Homer calls, and never comes back and says it was legit. What a Boston Douche, i dont know how RJS lives there
Something to watch during intermission

squirt
LOL Biron
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
3-1 was a better outcome than i thought it would be. Edwards after the game saying the spanked the Flyers was entertaining. Ii want to kidnap him and his family, put them in a vat of shtein and kerosene, and set them on fire with a flare.
he really is the worst....thing is hes a play by play guy and all he does is analyze...thats not your job dick and you dont know anything about hockey....can you imagine a tandem of edwards at pbp and the chief on color
dont ever say that scenerio again

Nitty saved their asses today. That's for certain. And Jack Edwards is probably crying somewhere right now, and that's a good thing.
#1 enemy Randy Jones fires a lucky shot off a defender for the winning goal in OT. Great comeback without Richards...
Biron needs to go and I don't care where or how. He sucks.
It was a good game to go to. Boston Bruins fans appear to be more tolerable (or at least knowledgeable) than Celtics/Pats fans.
Edit: Actually, they were still completely intolerable. But I was surprised by their knowledge of the sport and the league and in actuality they reminded me almost exactly of Philly fans.

Yeah there were a lot. Vocal as shtein, of course.
Carter's wrist shot is just ridiculous. 1-0
Giroux is looking like he's gonna be good player for this team.
he just added a power play one too....3-0 in the 3rd, looking for their 12938923923rd win in a row vs Atlanta
SHOOT! nitty cent
Nitty has been much more in the zone than Biron as of late.
Do you make Nitty the #1 guy going forward until he gets cold again?
I'd go with Niitty since he's younger, and has value in a trade. Biron should not be back next year, i thought he was the answer, but he's just too slow side to side, and you can tell when he's going to give up a goal.
Nitty's been outplaying Biron as of late but come playoff time Biron will be the guy. This same thing happened last season and Biron had a very nice playoffs.

Wasn't so bad, just got back from having a few beers with Asham and Metropolit at Chickie and Petes. Saw Spadaro there with a few of his friends but didn't bother him. Signguy knows Holly Cote so we talked to her in the tunnel, sweet girl and she's hot as balls. Met some guy that writes for Todd at Temple. Interesting night.
espn did a mt rushmore for all nhl teams...heres the flyers...
Philadelphia Flyers
The team: Bill Barber, Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent and Rick Tocchet.
The theory: Clarke, Barber and Parent are the locks on the Flyers. The fourth one was difficult. I suppose lots of Flyers fans would choose Tocchet. In games played, he's not in the top 10. I thought about Ron Hextall because he was a huge personality and combined great playoff success (at least for one season) with complete insanity. Watching athletes who could snap at any moment is compelling. Tocchet was Philadelphia's Cam Neely -- he combined goal scoring with a great ability to fight. I'm curious to see how Flyers fans will respond to this list.
Lindros would have been a lock if he wasn't such a bitch. I would have went with Hextall since he's my all time favorite player but Tocchet's fine.
Hextall should be the fourth and I don't think it's close. There are a few others who might be around the Tocchet level.
i woud have tocchets babys....hes my all time favorite athlete in any sport...his fight vs wendal clarke is an all time great philly sports moment
the rangers are a trainwreck and i love it
Giroux is on fargin fire right now.

HArtnell jumped him pretty good. I'd say it was a pretty decisive win for Hartnell.
He's become prehaps my favorite player on the team right now. Pretty solid all-around player, and he plays with a bit of a mean streak.

Reminds me of mine when I was in college...
theres nothing fabulous about his hair...its a perm for god sakes
you know i'm farging around, i hope.
Hartnell really has fit in very well to the Philly style of hockey. He really didnt fit in, didn't know his game when he got here, but now he's clearly an agitator who stirs up shtein nearly every game, and is a player that if he was on the other team that you would instantly hate.
Giroux is getting better by the game.
Is there a team in the Eastern conference that's as deep as the Flyers right now? If Briere can come back and be at all effective....

Also, it was mentioned a few times in the broadcast, but in case you missed it....Richards became the first player in NHL history to score 3 times in a 3-on-5 situation.
Last night on NHL Network they were discussing who should be on Team Canada in 2010. The suggested list had Richards, Carter, Gagne and Coburn...
the flyers need some players on team russia not team canada

Knuble dude.

Richards on the PK is just sick
Alberts is American, I believe.
According to ESPN Alberts, Carle and Hatcher are the only Americans on the Flyers' roster.
knuble must have only been born in canada....because hes been on numerous us national teams
Knuble is from Michigan, but born in Toronto

JvR wins.
JVR's nasty goal in the World Juniors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq1XIwykvJ8)
I wasnt sure if i already posted this, but i was trying to find last nights highlight and came across this one again. Sick hands for a power forward
i dont care how many goals he scores it still makes me sick to my stomach that the year the flyers had the worst record in the nhl they ended up with that bum...especially when you look at the top two picks from each year in the last decade or so
That goes with my conspiracy theory. All i wanted them to get was Kane. After Kane it was a drop off but no one thought it would be as big a drop off as its been. JVR hasnt left college, Turris who i wanted after Kane, came out of college after one season. Turris sucked so bad on the Coyotes, they sent him down.
Is there anything more annoying than Jim Jackson saying "case of Tastykake" after every Flyers goal?
Lupsy with the goal.
Quote from: NGM on February 21, 2009, 01:41:14 PM
Is there anything more annoying than Jim Jackson saying "case of Tastykake" after every Flyers goal?
Gene Hart started it in the 70s and Tastykake gave a case to each player that scored a goal. They started doing it again this year, but now the cases are donated to that player's charity...
Biron with his usual 3+ goals allowed, having a horrible 2nd period. The Pens were offsides on that 3rd one though...
Biron sucks
Awesome.
Richards with another breakaway SH goal
and a deflection goes in to tie the game
but Fedotenko scores his 2nd of the day to retake the lead...
HOLY farg BIRON SUCKS
Not only does Biron suck I'm 99% sure he's retarded
the worst part was all the announcers saying what a great play it was, just bad luck...WTF
You should have listened to Steigerwald on the Pens broadcast, just an amazing play by Crosby
If only a sniper could have gotten Biron at that moment... :boom
There is no way this team wins a Cup with a hack like Biron in net.
NONE.
farging chimp.
Biron bailed them out last year against Montreal, but that was it, he only got up for a game against a home town team to him. He had an Esche like run, and thats it. They need to find someone, because he's not the answer again.

kane - crosby - stamkos - staal - nash - malkin - heatley - ovechkin - spezza - kovalchuk - sedin - lehtonen - spezza - fluery - reemsdyke
(http://www.causeofliberty.com/wp-content/gun-to-head.jpg)
Stamkos sucks, i didnt like him in Jr's and he hasnt done shtein at this level. Then again JVR is still banging freshman now.
stamkos > x infintiy reemsdyke
but thats besides the point...the point is stamkos was rated as a franchise player coming out...reemsdyke was rated like picks that go in the 20's in a lot of years
JVR was listed as a project player based on him being a power forward. His comparisons were to Rick Nash, but he was no where near what Nash was physically at that point, and JVR isnt there now. Power Forwards take longer to learn the game at the NHL level, so even if he's tearing up NCAA, it means nothing.
and he hasnt even tore it up in college
but my point is not to hate on reemsdyke its the bitterness i have towards the draft being incredibly weak the year the flyers have the worst record
yep. Kane turned out to be a stud, yet the flyers had the worst record and couldnt even get the top pick.
Not even top 25 scorer (http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/llead.php?mode=points&league=NCAA)
He has 34pts in 28games. 13goals 21assists 41 penalty minutes. His team isnt anywhere as good this year

I like how the Flyers seem to be becoming a third-period team. They dominated Pittsburgh in the 3rd, and may have come all the way back to win if it weren't for Biron pulling the Keystone Cops routine in that last goal. Then tonight they roared back against AO and a Capital team that some have pegged to go to the Cup finals.
If Niitymaki could take the #1 job and run with it, this team could have a chance in June. I just don't have faith in Biron to put together four strong series.
sweet. my boy might have an extra flyers ticket for tomorrow. oh farg just checked theyre playing LA. what a crock of shtein. who cares about that team.

Just saw this quote by Hartnell about Ashams goal the other night.
QuoteWhen Asham did his mini-Ovie imitation by stickhandling through Washington defenseman Jeff Schultz for his fifth goal of the season and a 4-2 lead, the Flyers were well on their way to handing the Capitals just their sixth home loss of the season.
"If he would have jumped up and down and slammed into the glass he would have been just like (Alex) Ovechkin," Hartnell said, taking a verbal jab at Washington's irrepressible captain.

Thats got reality show on VH1 all over it.
Giroux was sent down, pretty sure it's nothing permanent and it's just to clear cap for a possible deal. I know they're bringing Briere back but they could have just sent down Powe if that were the case cause they only needed to clear $350k
Its a money move, what's gonna be interesting is who they go for. Rumors have been Pronger/Nidermayer/Boumeester/Lehtonen. The issue is the cap, and the rumors of the Cap going down next season
id suck my own cack and swallow if they got bouwmeester

Eklund's an idiot but if there's any merit to that trade than it should have been done faster than it took mds to get drunk lastnight.
Gagne just blocked a shot with his hand and went back to the locker room. Cap problems solved?
didnt look good, and yes it would solve any cap issues, based on him coming back at the start of the playoffs, they can be over then and the league cant do anything about it

QuoteFLYERS STEPPING UP EFFORTS FOR BOUWMEESTER
(1:30pm et) - The Philadelphia Flyers are stepping up their efforts to acquire defenceman Jay Bouwmeester from the Florida Panthers, but salary cap constraints are rearing their ugly head.
The Flyers are bumping up against the cap and they are working hard to try to free up some space.
Sources say one of the options is trading goaltender Marty Biron and turning the number one job over to Antero Niittymaki. One potential scenario has the Flyers trading Biron to the Phoenix Coyotes as part of a plan that would see the Coyotes flip Biron to another team.
But the Coyotes aren't going to make that move unless they have the other deal already set up.
It should be noted, however, that Biron has a no-trade clause and would have to be on board with any move that is made.
There is also a similar scenario involving Boston goalie Manny Fernandez, who has reportedly been offered to Phoenix. The Coyotes have no interest in keeping Fernandez but might take him if they can flip him. Boston is only likely to trade Fernandez if they find a need to clear some cap space.
Sources say the Buffalo Sabres may be in the market for one of the available goaltenders, given Ryan Miller's high ankle sprain.
Robbing Marty to pay Jay?

If you get Bouwmeester, you then pair 2-3 lines of scoring depth with 3 really good to great defenders in Bouwmeester, Kimmo, and Couburn....and a pretty good young guy in Parent.
All it would take is Niitty getting a little hot come playoff time and they could very easily at least get to the cup. At that point you just hope they don't bend over and take it up the ass from the Red Wings or Sharks.

Late push for Bouwmeester
Jay Bouwmeester | Panthers | Interested: Kings? Blue Jackets? Penguins? Maple Leafs? Bruins? Canucks? Flyers? Senators? Rangers? Devils? Canadiens? Oilers? Ducks?
The Flyers have offered F Joffrey Lupul and prospect James vanRiemsdyk to the Panthers for D Jay Bouwmeester, according to the Edmonton Sun.
Florida GM Jacques Martin told the Camden Courier-Post last week that he was in Philadelphia because his team had the night off, but his scouting visit to the Wachovia Center to watch the Kings play the Flyers combined with his plans to return Friday to watch the Canadiens play the Flyers increased speculation that Bouwmeester could be headed to Philly.
Philadelphia is so close to the salary cap that it would need to send players making at least as much as Bouwmeester is owed for the rest of this season on his $4.875M contract, and the Courier Post suggested names such as Lupul and Ds Matt Carle and Braydon Coburn.
Teams hoping to pry Bouwmeester from the Panthers will need to be creative and prepared to blow away Martin.
"I think the priority for us right now is to improve our club, to make the playoffs this year and I don't want to disturb that," Martin told The Miami Herald.
Failed contract talks make it clear that Bouwmeester wants to test the free agent market, but Martin told The Herald it will take an offer that provides immediate help to obtain the talented, puck-moving blue-liner.
"For now, we'll go forward with Jay in our lineup, if we can't get something that helps us now," Martin told The Herald.
ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun previously reported that the Bouwmeester's camp rejected a multiyear deal in the ballpark of $6.5 million a season.

he barely watches the flyers...you think he knows the first thing about about boston or new jersey
Boston beat up on their own division for a while and have come back down to earth a bit lately. I think they've won something like 4 out of their last 12 or some number like that. Not exactly playing dominating hockey.
NJ has been playing well, and the better Marty is scary, especially for the Flyers...
But at this point, any of the top 5 teams in the East could make the cup. That includes the Flyers who are a deep scoring team and, if they were able to make the trade happen, could end up with the best overall defense in the conference.
Edit-Boston has won 3 of their last 10, my bad.
boston against the atlantic 7-1-4
flyers vs the northeast 6-6-1
Flyers vs competition inferrior to them = bad
The most frustrating part of watching them play is they seem to find ways to play down to competition. Good times.

Wings in 7
Jersey vs. Washington in round 2 would be fun
I think the Devils are the best team in hockey right now and with Marty back, anyone who labels the East as wide open is delusional. It would take a miracle to beat them in a series.
if theodore plays like he has since december i think the caps come out of the east...they have owned the atlantic division this year even when he was off his game...if he slips in the playoffs i like the devils like everyone else...unless nitty cent gets hot...then its look out league
Theodore is such an enigma. The guy is stellar at points, and completely falls apart soon after. Ever since his "Propecia" roids issue, and his dad getting busted, he's been a mess.
Gagne is destroying the Bruins. What an overrated team that's gonna get bounced in the 1st round.

they just collapsed after the first goal. Typical Julien coached team
Nice win by the good guys.
Wide. Open.
The only team in the East the Flyers can't beat in a 7 game series right now is NJ.
I don't doubt, however, that another team like the Caps could take NJ. Or even the Habs if they play as good as they can.
Wide. Open.

Upshall and a 2nd to Phoenix for Daniel Carcillo
QuoteThe Phoenix Coyotes kept busy as they have acquired forward Scottie Upshall and a second round pick from the Philadelphia Flyers for tough guy Daniel Carcillo.
Upshall, 25, is a first round (6th overall) draft pick of the Nashville Predators in 2002. He has six goals and 14 assists in 54 games this season.
The Flyers acquired the Fort McMurray native, along with Ryan Parent and a first and third round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, from the Predators in exchange for Peter Forsberg on February 15 2007.
Upshall is also a two-time silver medalist for Canada at the World Junior Championships and a gold medalist for Canada at the 2000 Under-18 Four Nations tournament.
The 24-year old Carcillo is leading the league in penalty minutes with 174 in 54 games. He has also scored three goals and added seven assists.
The King City, Ontario native signed a two-year deal with the Coyotes this past off-season, but spent time in head coach Wayne Gretzky's doghouse for taking what Gretzky described as selfish penalties.

It looked like nothing would happen.
And then with the NHL's 3 p.m. trade deadline closing in, the Flyers today traded speedy winger Scottie Upshall and a 2009 second-round pick to Phoenix for tough guy Dan Carcillo. The Flyers also made a trade for defenseman Kyle McLaren, who plays in San Jose's minor-league system, for a sixth-round draft choice.
The thought behind the Flyers' moves is hard to understand. It more than likely is about clearing salary-cap space to keep from having to send players, especially Claude Giroux, up and down if there are injuries. Upshall is making $1.25 million this season.
Carcillo, 24, is in his second full season in the league. In 54 games with the Coyotes, he has three goals, seven assists and league-leading 174 penalty minutes. He is a minus-13. Carcillo is 5-11, 202 pounds. Last season, he had 13 goals, 11 assists and 324 penalty minutes in 57 games.
McLaren, 31, is a 6-1, 230-pound defenseman who has not played a game in the NHL this season. His last salary was $2.5 million. He has played 17 games for the Sharks' AHL affiliate in Worcester, Mass., scoring zero goals and seven assists. He has 17 penalty minutes. In 719 NHL games, McLaren has 46 goals, 161 assists and 671 penalty minutes.
Upshall, 25, played in 55 games this season, scoring seven goals and 14 assists. He was acquired in February 2007 along with defenseman Ryan Parent and two draft picks from Nashville in the Peter Forsberg trade. *

this is obviously not Banner accounting.
Holmgren says the 2nd-rd pick to Phoenix is in 2011, every offer for Bouwmeester had to include Coburn, McLaren is for injury depth only....won't play with the Flyers...and Cote isn't going anywhere, so they'll have Carcillo, Cote, Asham, Hartnell and Alberts beating the ish out of everyone
As much as I wanted Bouwmeester, I'm glad they didn't give up Cobourn....dude will be a FA, so figure out a way to try and get him next year.
Don't like this trade though. As a few have already said, most teams don't have a guy like Upshall on their 4th line/able to play the 3rd line, that was part of the good depth they have.
Hopefully as Ed said, they can just beat the shtein out of everyone in their way now.
So I guess the Phillies winning the World Series last year really will be the last championship we ever see in our lifetime.
I like Coburn but he's also an F/A this upcoming season and he's nowhere near the player Bouwmeester is. Florida was dumb not to get what they could for him cause there's 0 chance he re-signs there.

Hopefully he's top priority next year to re-sign....Kimmo's not getting any younger, and if they can keep him and Parent around along with Sbisa, they should be set at D for a lonnnnnng time.
But hey, if they let Coburn go and sign Bouwmeester...not a bad trade off at all
Edit: According to rotoworld, he's signed through 09-10 and is a RFA in 2010.

Last time I checked the Flyers should have around $2.5 available next season. They're already gonna lose Knuble, Upshall is history, do they trade a guy like Lupul for picks to clear the space? That depletes the forward spot unless JVR comes up and we know that's no given. As much as I think Bouwmeester is a perfect fit here they need to address the Goalie situation first. I wish there were a team that would take Briere.
Same here SD. I'd be happy if they could trade Briere and resign Upshall on the cheap. He's going to get maybe at the max 2 mill a year. Whats scary is the cap is going to go down next year
FWIW:
Quote The reason the Flyers asked for an extension on the deadline.....
Deal was in place to trade for Kari Lehtonen. Flyers would not send in the trade to the league until they had a contract extension with Lehtonen done. They could not settle on the number of years so they had to pull the deal off the table.
Flyers want him, he wants to be a Flyer. It is highly likely that he will be traded for on draft day for Lupul.
I have a source that hits me with some stuff from time to time. Pretty solid. I trust him pretty well as he has no reason to be lying to me and isn't even really an active member. He used to give me a lot of info on the Lindros saga and we stay in touch.
So take it for what it is worth but the request for the deadline extension was not for Bouwmeester. Although I still feel they will target him in the offseason.
this is from the guy who runs Phillysportsforums, he's not the type to make shtein up
How long can they extend talks past the deadline? Lehtonen for Lupul I'd do in a heartbeat
Big game tonight against Calgary. First game for Ollie for the Flames.
I'm not sure of the exact timeframe SD, i know they've had deals go thru as last as 5:30, when the deadline is 3pm. I'd love to see Holmgren fleece Waddell again.
Ugly game already. 2-0
I think Carcillo was just yelling at one of the flames saying "Watch your farging mouth" lol
Carcillo is the man and has looked great so far.
Calgary is literally skating circles around the Flyers. 4-0 after the 1st. Flyers look like complete dogshtein. Jokinen already has 2 goals, no doubt he gets the hatrick

QuotePanaccio: Briere to Miss Saturday Night's Game
By Tim Panaccio
CSNPhilly.com
Danny Briere feels he's dodged a bullet. For now.
The Flyers center said Friday morning at Skate Zone that his groin injury, suffered during Thursday's 5-1 loss to Calgary, was more "adhesions" breaking loose and not a re-injuring of his groin.
"There's a big relief this morning; it's not as bad as we thought," said Briere, who plans to practice on Saturday but will not play against Nashville. "I had a little workout this morning."
He said he feels he can be "day to day" starting on Sunday.

QuoteThe NHL's general managers yesterday recommended a rule change that would give a 10-minute misconduct to players who fight immediately after a face-off.
The misconduct also could be applied to any other fight a referee believes was staged.
The GMs, at their annual meeting in Naples, Fla., also recommended limiting fighting in response to a clean hit, by calling the instigator penalty more aggressively. The league has seen an increase in violent reactions to clean hits.
The recommendations must be approved by the Board of Governors before being adopted.
so now Cote will spend 10 minutes a game in the sin bin, vs only 5.
could there be a lamer nickname for the penalty box than the sin bin? isnt hockey supposed to a manly sport?
flyers need to get rid of cote or carcillo...what team has two goons on two different lines in todays nhl...you watch them now and if carter or richards lines arent on the ice you know they arent gonna score
Carcillo has so much more skill than Cote its not a fair comparison. Cote sucks and Gratton should be playing over him
they both suck both are goons and shouldnt be in the nhl...once youre not an nhl'er the level of suckiness is irrelevant
and could the flyers miss more nets tonight
Refs tried their best to hand the Flyers that game
Up 2-1 on the Rangers after 2 periods. Biron looking good today. Avery needs his face punched in...

Funniest part was Dornhoefer and Jackson absolutely destroying Martin Havlat for being a Hoyda.
So glad we had another non-biased game
You gotta love how NBC makes a decision before the game to focus on one player and then spend the next 2 1/2 hours hyping him non-stop regardless of what else has gone on during the game.
Nobody likes a whiner about officiating but this game really was a disgrace from that perspective. The Coburn penalty was especially odious considering the same guy drew blood on him earlier and didn't get so much as a 2 minute penalty for it.
The Parent play just a few minutes ago was LOL funny. If they're not going to call something that blatant then why bother having officials out there at all? Just let them goon it up instead.

QuoteThursday, March 19
4:30 p.m.
After a day off from the rink yesterday, the Philadelphia Flyers were back at practice this morning with new looks to all three of their top scoring lines.
The most notable change was Danny Briere taking Joffrey Lupul's place on the wing alongside Jeff Carter and Scott Hartnell. Lupul skated with Mike Richards and Dan Carcillo, while Claude Giroux centered Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble.
The only thing I don't like about this is breaking up the Center City Line. But I like the sound of Giroux paired with Gagne and Knuble.
6 goals and swept Buffalo for the season

I don't usually do 'game day threads' for Flyers games but I'm working on a project for school so I'm over on FlyersPhans today. I questioned the Richards stick to the face by Staal call and 10 of them jumped on my shtein. I do think the Flyers reputation gets them more calls than usual, I could post stats to back that up, but for this argument you're right that Flyers fans bitch and moan about calls more than most fans. Pretty sure Lupul gets moved in the offseason. Giroux fills in for him alongside Carter.
giroux is a center imo...moving him to wing would be a big time mistake...he has no shot but is a brilliant passer....i see him as an adam oates type
I'm all for moving Briere and making Giroux a center but I don't think anyone will take his contract.
i hated the briere signing from the get go...the guy takes away more than he gives...always has...but i guess it had to be done with the season they were coming off of...
truth be told i didnt like the timonen signing either but was waaaaaay wrong on that one...
In hindsight it was a bad signing, but at the time I was for it because who knew some of these guys would develop as fast (or as good) as they have.

Van Massenhoven sucks ass, and noone can tell me otherwise.
Parent played like a man, and looked like how he did in the series last May against the Pens. Physical, and aware of what was going on around him. He still flubs clears too often, but he's definitely a great piece to build around. I'm still amazed at the talent the flyers have grown over the past 5 years thru trades and good drafting. In addition to Parent You have in the minors or other leagues, Bodrov/Bartulis/Syvret/Marshall/Guenin/Ratchuk/Sbisa pretty impressive
they all suck cept sbisa...still the flyers have a nice young nucleus...what they need is a legit goal scoring winger

Biron is fine for this season (not that it matters now), he's making his late season push and there's zero doubt in my mind he'll be good in the playoffs again. They have ammunition to trade for a young guy in the offseason. He's 100% a head case.

Giroux had an absolutely insane no-look pass to Gagne in the third. It's like he had eyes in the back of his head.

I agree, I've watched some lacrosse before but that was the first time I really got into it. The last period and OT was great and as much fun as any hockey or football that I don't have a favorite team playing in.

Yeah they looked like shtein for most of 2 periods. But it's good to see their offense can explode at any time. 3 goals in a 2 and a half minute span.

Quote"We were not very good for whatever reason," said coach John Stevens, referring to the first two periods, when the Flyers fell behind, 2-0. "Give the Islanders credit. They worked hard. Their execution was crisp. . . . And I give credit to Mike Richards. I thought he took the game over. He addressed the team [between the second and third periods]. I didn't even go in after the second period. I left it up to the captains, and he's clearly the leader of the hockey team the way he played."
So basically, Richards is still God.
That article reminded me of the fights I forgot about. Asham's punch on Jackman was awesome, I was hoping after he got back up the refs would let it keep going because Asham was poised to strike again.

They need a goalie more because the two they have are mediocre as hell.
Ahem.
Tim Thomas was a farging superstar last night. A good goalie would be nice. On the other hand, is there another team in the league that gives up as many shots as the Flyers? Jesus.
The last goal that Nitty gave up was a back-breaker. The Flyers had all the momentum and he gives up a shtein goal like that? Awful.
And you're right - Thomas was ridiculous.
Flyers fans everywhere in Long Island on Sat. night. Perfect away game to go to, 5 fights, coming back from two goals down, then a shootout win. Isles fans were actually pretty good sports, but I guess you have to be with a team like that.

The Bruins? The Flyers had like 50 shots or some shtein.
Well yes, but the Flyers give up the 5th most shots in the league and none of the other teams on that list have any reasonable expectation to win anything. The number of shots they allow is a huge problem especially with two mediocre goalies.

Sbisa Shines in the Present, Looks to the Future
Al Alven | philadelphiaflyers.com
Mar 30, 2009, 9:44 AM EDT
There are a couple of ways Luca Sbisa could have taken his reassignment to the major junior ranks back in early February.
Naturally, he endured the inherent letdown any player, let alone an 18-year-old rookie, would feel after getting an extended taste of life in the NHL. At the same time, he understood not only the reality of the situation, but the opportunities afforded to him as a result.
Besides, Sbisa fully expects to be back in Philadelphia for good next season.
"There's no doubt in my mind, I'll be back," noted the Ozieri, Italy native, who became the fourth youngest Flyer and second youngest defenseman in franchise history while suiting up for 39 games with the team this season.
Luca Sbisa played 39 games with the Flyers this season before returning to him junior club in Lethbridge. (Photo courtesy Lethbridge Hurricanes)
"I did not expect to make [the Flyers] out of training camp this year, but I learned so much in my time there, even when I wasn't playing after some of the injured players came back.
"I met so many great people, and played with some great teammates. And I really fell in love with the city. It was a disappointment, for sure, to have to leave, but I had to accept the reasons why and move on for now.
"I'll be ready for next season, and I will be back."
Prior to returning to the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL, the team from which the Flyers drafted him 19th overall last summer, Sbisa was reassured by general manager Paul Holmgren that the move was not a demotion, in the typical sense of the word, and was best for his development.
"He wanted to let me know that he was very happy with the way I played this season, and the way I carried myself," Sbisa explained. "He said I wasn't just there because the team had injury problems.
"I hadn't been playing as much as I had earlier in the year and both Paul and [head coach] John Stevens felt it would be better if I was back in Lethbridge playing regularly."
Said Holmgren of his decision at the time: "I struggled with it and how it would affect his development. But when you weigh it against not playing at all, I don't think we had a choice."
Back in Lethbridge, Sbisa wasted little time getting reacquainted with his old surroundings.
"Once I came back, I was really glad I was there," he said. "I missed Philly... well, I still miss Philly. But, it was great to see so many of my friends and teammates, and to meet some of the new young guys on the team.
"I realized when I got back to Lethbridge that this was a chance for me to do some things I missed, like playing lots of minutes and getting power play time. I really did miss that stuff. It was also a chance to go for a championship and try to contend for the Memorial Cup, which would be great."
Within a week of his return, Sbisa was playing upwards of 35 minutes a game for the Hurricanes in all situations. He was reunited with his defensive partner from last season, Ben Wright, and immediately reassumed the leadership role he took on as a 17-year-old over the course of last season.
"It wasn't too hard to adjust and get comfortable again," he said. "For me, the biggest thing is that my role here in Lethbridge is a much more important one. I'm playing 30-35 minutes a game: even strength, killing penalties, working the power play. My role was more limited in Philly, of course, because I was just a young guy getting started.
"But as far as the game goes, the size and pace of the NHL is so much different. Down here, I can go into the corner and outmuscle guys, come away with the puck and just skate it up. Up there, the big guys wear you down, the hits are harder, everything is faster, and if you make one mistake, it can cost your team a game.
"There isn't as much pressure [at this level], but this is still a very good league. Nothing is going to come easy, no matter where you're playing."
In 18 regular season games with Lethbridge, Sbisa went on to record 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) and 19 penalty minutes, with all four of his goals coming on the power play. Though he appeared in less than half the number of games he played in with the Flyers earlier in the campaign, he probably saw close to the same amount of total ice time, over the span of just a month and half.
"Luca stepped right back in and was a huge late-season addition to our team," said Lethbridge General Manager Roy Stasiuk. "To tell you the truth, I think he had to slow down a bit and reacquaint himself to the pace of the game at this level.
"He was moving at a slightly different speed when he got here, but it didn't take him long to adjust. He's been outstanding for us, as expected."
Stasiuk made particular note of Sbisa's focus on the present, noting a common concern WHL managers and coaches have when players are returned after stints in the NHL.
"These are young guys, and when they get to experience the bright lights of the NHL, sometimes it's tough to get their heads back to where they should be. This was honestly not an issue with Luca at all. And, think about it; we're talking about a player who wasn't just coming back from a preseason stint here. He spent half a season in the NHL.
"I'm sure he was disappointed to leave the Flyers, but he came back and totally dedicated himself to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and our push to the playoffs."
The Hurricanes finished the regular season with a record of 35-32-3-2. As the seventh seed in the WHL's Eastern Conference, the team drew a tough first round match-up opponent in the second-seeded Saskatoon Blades (49-18-3-2).
Lethbridge holds a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series heading into Game 6 on Monday night, March 30.
The Lethbridge faithful are looking to Sbisa for a repeat of his outstanding playoff performance from last year. It was then that he truly hit his stride and put his name on the map as a legitimate NHL prospect, notching 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) and 17 penalty minutes in 19 games while leading the team to the WHL finals.
I feel like I am a big game player. Like, when the pressure is on, I can play my best. I've always felt this way, but I really like the big game atmosphere, and the playoffs, when everything is on the line. That's when I feel that I'm at my best." - Luca Sbisa
By comparison, he recorded 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 62 games during the regular season in 2007-08.
"I feel like I am a big game player," said Sbisa. "Like, when the pressure is on, I can play my best. I've always felt this way, but I really like the big game atmosphere, and the playoffs, when everything is on the line. That's when I feel that I'm at my best.
"That's what I hope to experience in Philly some day. There were some big games I was a part of with the Flyers this year, with the building packed and the fans going crazy. I loved that. I loved the rush and the emotion of it. You can really feed off of it and it fires you up to go out and get the job done."
While Sbisa's play will obviously go a long way in determining how far the Hurricanes go this spring, the pressure to perform is evenly distributed among the team's veteran core, which includes fellow rearguards Wright (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Eric Mestery (Washington Capitals), along with highly-regarded forward prospects Zach Boychuk (Carolina Hurricanes), Kyle Beach (Chicago Blackhawks), Dwight King (Los Angeles Kings), and Colton Sceviour (Dallas Stars).
"We have a great group of guys here," said Sbisa. "The other thing the Flyers told me when I was sent back was to have fun. Just keep it simple, have fun, and play the game. To have the chance to play with Ben again, and with Zack, Kyle, Dwight, and everyone else, it's been really special.
"For sure, we would really love to win as a group, and we know this is our last chance. There are a lot of guys on this team who will be playing somewhere else next season."
Including Sbisa himself; at least, that's the way he sees it. And he probably isn't the only one.
"Obviously, Luca has a very bright future ahead of him," said Stasiuk. "I think the fans in Philadelphia got just a glimpse or a preview of the kind of player he can be. It says a lot that he was able to make the Flyers out of camp, but his body of work this season speaks to his potential.
"He's also a born leader, which fits that Philly mold. He came in here at 17 last year and had a huge presence in our room. He speaks up when he has to. He knows when to talk and when to let his play on the ice do the talking. As much as he's added to our lineup with his play, I think he's been that much more valuable in a leadership role.
Click here to find out more!
"That's what Luca brings and because he's such a natural leader, I would imagine that will translate to the next level."
Stasiuk went on to further praise Sbisa's advanced level of maturity, both on and off the ice, and offered some insight into what he feels the promising rearguard needs to work on most at this point.
"Luca can play in the NHL. We've already seen that," he said. "To take that next step, to earn a permanent spot with the Flyers, it just comes down to gaining more experience and developing naturally. Like any young player, he needs to establish more consistency in his game, and get a little stronger.
"One thing we've been trying to work on with him a little is to not get so down on himself when he makes a bad play or has a bad game. Not that he's had too many of those, but Luca is such a competitor. He'll learn to put his mistakes behind him and benefit from them, which will only make him a better player."
Though he's been fully invested in the Hurricanes' efforts since his return to the WHL nearly two months back, Sbisa admits that Philadelphia and his Flyer teammates are often on his mind.
"I've tried to continue following the guys as closely as possible," he said. "I keep in touch with a lot of guys on the team, and we talk on the phone every week. They still view me as being part of the team, and that means a lot to me.
As far as favorite memories of his rookie stint with the Flyers, Sbisa noted that he could not cite any one particular moment or game. But he did come away with some very emotional impressions.
"The first thing is just the locker room, with all my teammates there," he said. "Mike Richards is the best leader I've ever played with. I'll never forget when he walked up to me and introduced himself on my first day there. Kimmo Timonen is like the captain of the defense, and almost a father figure for the young guys.
Sbisa is currently playing in the WHL playoffs. (Photo courtesy Lethbridge Hurricanes)
"I became extremely close to Riley Cote and his wife, Holly. They are like family to me. They offered me a place to live and took me into their home. That's another thing I'll never, ever forget. They showed me around the area and were so good to me."
And, last but not least, there was the city itself.
"Philly is such an awesome city," Sbisa continued. "It's a huge sports town, and they love their teams there. I couldn't believe how things were when the Phillies won the World Series, but I'm so glad I was there to see it. The whole city came out and went crazy. I was watching the parade with some of the guys and we just wondering what it would be like if the Flyers won the Stanley Cup.
"Some people even said it would be crazier. I can't wait to see that!
"A lot of times, people around the league asked me what my favorite building to play is, and I always said the Wachovia Center. The building is so loud, and the fans are so passionate. Every time I did an event where I met the fans, they were so nice to me. It's just a great city and I love playing there."
While Sbisa is hoping for a deep postseason run up in Lethbridge, he has already laid out his plans for the offseason. Not surprisingly, his summer itinerary is geared toward his goal of making the Flyers roster out of training camp again next season.
"I'm going to go back to Switzerland for a little bit this offseason and will finish up some college credits," he said. "After that, I'll be spending lots of time in Philly to work on some things. I want to try to add more muscle, improve my strength and work on my speed, so I'll be working very closely with [Flyers trainer] Jim McCrossin.
"Hopefully, that will give me a good head start before camp, and will help prepare me to make the team for good. I can't wait, and I will be ready."
i had no idea that the flyers were only five points from being out of the playoffs...luckily they have a super easy schedule down the stretch here and should be able to keep the four seed
QuoteRiley Cote was back on the ice yesterday, but he will be a game-time decision. Cote dislocated a finger on his left hand during a fight on Long Island Saturday; he did not play against Boston. "It was the most messed up thing I've ever seen. My finger was all off to the side. He was pointing to my knuckle and I said, 'Yeah, look at this,' " Cote said. "It's still pretty swollen, but I can hold onto a stick, so that's a start."
maybe getting some talent would be a better start.

it actually might work out....the flyers and devils both suck so bad that its possible the flyers drop while the devils hold onto the division and they play each other which woulod be the best thing for philly...lets just hope the flyers dont drop out of the playoffs completely
oddly enough i told my wife before the game started guaranteed loss tonight.

Holmgren: Flyers need attitude adjustment
Interview: Primeau to donate brain to science
April 03, 2009 • 8:45 am
By Chuck Gormley
Just received this email from Rogers Sportsnet, which is airing an
interview tonight with former Flyers captain Keith Primeau,
who revealed he will be donating his brain to
the Sports Legacy Institute in Massachusetts.
Here's the release:
TORONTO (April 2, 2009) - After a career cut short by concussions,
former NHLer Keith Primeau speaks exclusively to Rogers Sportsnet
about
is decision to donate his brain to science after he dies.
Hockeycentral Leafs Edition will air the riveting interview between
Connected reporter Arash Madani and the 37-year-old Primeau Friday,
April 3rd at 6:30 p.m. (ET). Primeau discusses his decision to
donate his brain to the Sports Legacy Institute in Massachusetts
and how he got to this point.
"I think the beginning of my demise goes back to the playoff situation
back in 2000," said Primeau, who was with the Philadelphia Flyers at the
time. "I got laid out at centre ice and got carried off on a stretcher.
I stayed overnight in a Pittsburgh hospital, only to return two nights
later against New Jersey. And that was ultimately the beginning of my
demise."
Primeau suffered his first official concussion and missed 21 games in
the 2003-04 season when he played with the Philadelphia Flyers. In the
2004 playoffs he suffered two more head injuries, but managed to play in
18 games that post-season. The final blow came two years later on Oct.
25 when Primeau, then 34, was concussed again after a hit from
Montreal's Alexander Perezhogin. He missed the rest of that season and
in September 2006 was finally forced to retire.
Madani says Primeau hopes his decision will aid in the research to help
others avoid the pain he suffered as a professional hockey player. "It
really appeared in our time together that his sincere hope is to raise
awareness about head injuries and their consequences," said Madani. "He
hopes that with the donation of his brain from science, future
generations can learn of the unknown from head trauma and live a better
life."
The Sports Legacy Institute is dedicated to studying the effects of
concussions and other sports related brain injuries in order to maximize
the safety and vitality of all athletes who participate in contact and
collision sports around the globe.
Sportsnet will also air Primeau's interview on the late editions of
Connected at 10 p.m. (ET)/10 p.m. (PT), in addition to airing it on
Hockeycentral Saturday on April 4 at 6 p.m. (ET)/3 p.m. (PT).
Primeau retired from the NHL in 2006 after a 15-year career. He was
drafted by the Detroit Red-Wings third-overall in the 1990 NHL Entry
Draft. Primeau played six seasons in Detroit where he participated in
his only Stanley Cup Finals appearance, a losing cause to the New Jersey
Devils in 1995. Prior to the 1996-1997 season, Primeau was dealt to the
Hartford Whalers. After the Whalers moved over to Carolina, the former
Red-Wing was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2000. During the
2000-2001 season, Primeau achieved a career best in goals (34) and tied
a career-high in points (73).
It's not really the beginning of his "demise" unless he winds up dying from it (which the odds are against).
3-0 nine minutes into the game....Gerber pulled for CuJo already
Hartnell #30 and Carter breakaway....5-0 with 2 minutes left in the 1st
Talk about a massacre. The team is coming out and playing with fire.

8 goals, but the Flyers needed 6 of them.
lol at Biron nearly pissing the game away.

Well, you'll have to apologize to your mom and sister, then.
Oh snap.
Sank you. I vill be herre alzee week!
Beat Ottawa tonight and they clinch a playoff spot
Either Pittsburgh or Carolina is going to win 2 points today, and the Flyers have pretty much pissed away their advantage in number of games left. The Flyers and Penguins have a similar quality of schedule down the stretch (pretty easy); Carolina has a marginally more difficult road to #4. I don't see the Flyers holding onto the 4 seed if they lose today.
LMAO at the bullshtein call on Carcillo, and then him getting kicked because he hurt the flag ref's fault.
Win. In.
they looked like shtein to start the game, but really came back strong. Got a huge break when Hartnell crosschecked the shtein out of a Panther, and Carter took a ridiculous shot.
i never thought id say this but the flyers really wanna play the devils in the playoffs.....gotta drop to sixth to avoid carolina or pitt who both right now would run the flyers out of the building
Doom and gloom!
anyone watching the game....the ranger announcers mentioned there was some excitement during warmups...was there yapping or something going on during
I'm watching on Center Ice but I have it muted so I missed whatever they are talking about. So far the game is shtein.
:-D The Flyers signed an amateur named David Sloan (or something like that) to an ATO and are playing him tonight.

Briere on the powerplay. Mara got hurt blockig the puck, managed to get up to interfere with his own goalie, giving Danny boy the open net.
flyers are a mess and the rangers are getting swept in the first round
they'll win the next two, get the #4 seed and face Carolina. The Devils are locked into the #3 seed now and don't need the game Sunday...
That first goal was a horrendous screwup by the refs. Should have been blown dead.
THe Flyers, though, had 59 minutes to get it back and never did it. Loss is on them.
Win or lose that was the best effort I've seen out of this bunch in months. They played their farging asses off for 50 minutes and kept the heat on the Rags the whole time.
They lost, yes, but I was more than happy with the effort.
Play like that in the playoffs and they'll win more than they'll lose.
PS: I was watching the MTL/BOS game at the same time. That shtein was nutty. It was like a George Carlin/throw whiskey and PCP into a ring and see what happens sort of game.
Awesome with a capital farg you.
if this happens i WILL find a way there

According to a source familiar with negotiations involving the NHL, players, and the Bruins, Boston likely will host either the Washington Capitals or the Philadelphia Flyers. It has long been rumored that the next Jan. 1 game would include a Canadian-based team, with the Montreal Canadiens the probable partner for a game in the Hub of Hockey.
But a number of sources indicated it is highly unlikely the Habs will be part of the show, and the likely partner will be the Capitals, whose playoff-bound roster includes superstar winger Alexander Ovechkin, the game's most exciting player and No. 1 goal scorer the last two seasons.
Can't have a national broadcast without Ovechkin or Fagney.

i think they are gonna wait and see what happens in the playoffs...if the flyers make another run and the caps dont they might get the nod
I still want the game at Beaver Stadium.
With the MLB free preview, the Flyers game is free for out of towners. Lots of Flyers fans in Nassau today. If Carolina beats the Devils (and they're losing right now), the Flyers will not face the Penguins in the first round...
islanders have given up 15 goals in the last two games and ill be shocked if the flyers get four this game
down 1-0
the only chance the flyers have of winning a round is to play the devils...their offense is awful right now and they will not be able to score with carolina or pittsburgh
they are getting dominated right now by a team who looked liked they belonged in the ahl the last two games...and they just so happened played the pens and hurricanes in those games...lost 6-1 and 9-0
that was an absolutely sick goal
Hurricanes lose in regulation
Flyers get 1 pt and Penguins get 1 pt = Flyers/Penguins in round 1
Gagne makes it 3-2
wow brion is awful
carolina lost...
flyers get zero pts this weekend they play the devils
if they and pitt both get pts they play each other
if pitt loses tonight and flyers get a point its flyers carolina
please proofread easy...
Looks right to me.
pitt wins tonight = flyers @ pens
pitt loses tonight = hurricanes @ flyers
pitt ties or OT loses = pens @ flyers
???
If Pittsburgh wins tonight, the Flyers still get #4 with a point tomorrow
Well, it's the Penguins. The Flyers game tomorrow is for home ice. The game is meaningless to the Rangers, who will be playing the Caps in the first round.

Yeah. I still hate the Devils and Rangers more, but the Penguins have definitely been climbing up the hate list since I moved here and since they drafted that big-lipped fag.
I caught a lot of shtein after that series loss last year, people were even yelling shtein at me at the Eagles-Steelers preseason game. I expect to catch more shtein after the Flyers lose this series in 5, but whatever. World farging champs.

ballin today son
a win over toronto? OHMIGOD what did we do to deserve this?
Biron looking decidedly Biron-esque in the third period. Not a good sign for the last period of the regular season.
hes so bad...thats gonna be the difference in that series...fleury is going to own biron...i see some sick numbers for fleury in that series
I think this team is in serious trouble. Shoddy goaltending. Indifferent defense. And their play, in crunch time, has been uninspired this season.
No refs. No biases. Just this team is not good enough right now.
Pens in five.
the difference btwn biron and lundquvist is so palpable its not even funny

Philadelphia Flyers captain Mike Richards will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, according to the Courier-Post.
Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told the paper that Richards is expected to miss 10-12 weeks for recovery.
Holmgren added that surgery could be necessary on the left shoulder as well, pending the results of an MRI.
24-year-old Richards was leading his team in playoff scoring with five points in six games.
On Tuesday, he was named one of the finalists for the Selke trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward.
He led the team in playoff points? He was basically invisible. farging awful.
richards was far from invisible...for not being a real scorer he had a decent number of pts...but he was everywhere physically and was good on the penalty kill...he did a ton of stuff well...where he was pathetic was on faceoffs...crosby owned his punk ass...hes gotta get better there
carter was the dog that series...i know hes not nearly as good as malkin but you gotta compare the teams top scorers and in that respect malkin made him look like he belonged back in the juniors
Those are all fair points. My point really was that Richards is the kind of player that you expect to thrive in the playoffs. In certain ways he did. Killing penalties and laying lumber but he didn't raise his game one iota from how he played during the regular season. I just expect more from the captain.
And farg Jeff Carter. He got absolutely worked in this series.
yeah i agree with that richards definitely didnt step his game up...but outside of timonnen he was the best player on his team and wasnt in the top ten things id bring up when talking about why thye lost
Giroux i think played better than the GAWD this series.
giroux is more flashy and had some amazing plays but he gives up goals because of defense and took some really dumb penalties...no way was he all around better than richards in the series who plays everywhere does everything and has to check crosby most of the series...
im sure if richards could just float around and try to set up goals without any other responsibilities he could do that
Flyers reveal more injuries

Questions about the play of both Jeff Carter and Mike Richards came up a lot during the Flyers' first-round series loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It is just being discovered that both were playing hurt. Richards has torn labrums in both shoulders, and yesterday general manager Paul Holmgren revealed that Carter was playing with a separated right shoulder.
"He did it in the third game in a play where he slid into the boards behind the net," Holmgren said. "He continued to play. He won't need surgery. He just needs about 2 weeks rest and then rehab."
Carter was invited to play for Team Canada in the upcoming world championships but he will not participate.
Richards will have his first surgery today, and on Monday, four Flyers will travel to Nashville to have hip injuries examined - Simon Gagne, Darroll Powe, Antero Niittymaki and Randy Jones. Powe has a torn labrum. It is not known if the others will require surgery.
Holmgren said both of Gagne's hips were sore through the end of the season. "We just want to get him checked out," Holmgren said. *
Boo farging hoo. Losers.
and I'm sure the Pens were 100% healthy
well, i think Crosby's vagina was swollen, but otherwise he looked fine to me
how the farg is this turned to I'm a homer, i'm posting news muthafargas.
Gawd did the Jason Smith and played with two farged up shoulders.
If the Flyers had won the Pens series Richards/Carter etc. would still be playing. Since they lost now it comes out that they were injured which is a subtle excuse for fans to use.
Or to use another example: say we beat the Pens, THEN it comes out Crosby/Malkin were injured. What are Pens fans saying?
the refs caused the flyers to be injured.....im sure of it
CONSPIRACY
I actually thought Giroux was relatively responsible defensively this series. Got his stick in a lot of passing lanes. I thought he hurt the team more defensively by trying to be too fancy on some passes that would lead to 3 on 2s etc.
Giroux is fine defensively, not on the level of a Richards, but he's not a liability like Briere is either. Stevens had him on the PK and he did fine.
Stevens has done all he's going to do with this group. He needs to go as much as Reid does if not more.
i wouldnt be upset if stevens went but i think hes a fine coach...the problem is simply put they arent that good and everyone overrates almost every player on the team...particularly the young ones
This team is good. It's just missing a superstar. Seriously, put one superstar on this team and they challenge for a cup. A never-ending list of second and third tier stars will win a lot of games but not a cup.
I think the players overrate themselves. They seem to think they are entitled to win a cup, not earn it. Stevens to me is a very good young coach, and he's not going to washout of the league. I just dont know if this team has enough balls to play the way they need to every night to win. From the beginning of the season this team was jekyl and hyde. Stevens needs to get them to play consistently.
I agree about the Superstar, and the simple fact is the year that the flyers actually sucked, they managed to still lose the lottery and missed out on Kane. I was hoping Carter would be that guy, but he disappeared in the playoffs, maybe the shoulder was the reason, but he wasnt really doing much up to that point, and he wasnt lighting the world on fire last year. His stats could be considered Abreu like.
Chris Therien has said all year that Giroux will be a top 5 player in this league within 3 years, i dont rate him that high, but he's said it all year. He's said thats the opinion of many people around the league, who knows.
No one. You don't have to take everything so personally sugarbear.

I, for one, think that rjs has neatly cleaned up this mess and I'm certain that this will be the last we hear about it.
If you mean they could use a superstar goalie, then yes, I agree with you.
None available, though, so...
Luongo might be available, same with Gigure
A superstar goalie is a pipe dream right now. What they need is to cut down on the number of shots that they allow. Their 5 on 5 defense is a farging travesty and makes Biron look worse than he is.
is that true...how could luongo possbily be available in a league that has a salary cap?...i wouldnt even know what to do with myself if they got him

They'd have to move Briere/Gagne/Lupul just to even get breathing room. Honestly, i think this team is gonna be very different next year, the cap will probably go down.
no you misunderstood me...why would vancouver ever trade the best goalie in league unless he was to expensive and with the cap thats not possible
like lets say luongo was going to be a free agent in a year and the rangers/red wings/flyers ect..were all gonna offer him 150 million dollars something that vancouver couldnt afford...i could see him leaving in that scenario...but thats not possible in todays nhl

I'd say good riddance to all 3. Throw Carle in there too. Luongo is a pipe dream. I think Giguere is an option because he had a down year.

Vancouver cant afford him is what all the rumors are. The Flyers do have an assload of talent they could unload, its a pipe dream, and one i'm not counting on.
As far as Carle, he had a very good playoffs surprisingly. He's got a ton of upside, but is so inconsistent its scary. But he's still young, look at that retard Joni now.
vancouver sells out every single game and isnt exactly a small market to begin with...and with a salary cap i just understand why money would be the reason youd ever trade him
i dont know vancouvers cap situation but for sake of argument lets say they are at the cap like the flyers...if the flyers can trade four different guys to clear space to bring luongo in the canucks certainly can do the same to keep him
in todays nhl unless youre say nashville/florida/phoenix and going broke why the hell would you ever trade a luongo ovechkin crosby ect...
they also have a young stud backing him up and probably think they can get a shteinload of talent and still have a good goalie.
maxime oullet was a stud to...luongo is one of the better goalies in the nhl in the last 15-20 years...you dont trade that
if the stud goalie is that good trade him and youll get a good amount of talent and still have luongo...unless they are completely rebuilding and dont expect to be good until hes like 34-35
Carchidi's offseason plan. (http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/20090503_Inside_the_Flyers___Future_looks_bright__but_moves_must_be_made.html) I like the imagination but there's no way they add Madden, Komisarek and Bouwmeester and re-sign Biron. I'd be thrilled with them getting Bouwmeester and a decent goalie while shedding Lupul/Carle/Briere/Gagne and whomever else. I'm not a Jones hater but if he has any value trade his ass.
Can someone explain to me why anyone would want to get rid of Gagne? Pupul, Carle and Briere can all be dropped off of a tall building, but why Gagne? He's the man.
gagne is not a sniper anymore...he has a good touch and he a veru smart player but his goals are so empty...hes the perfect guy to move because he has very good value but doesnt add much to a team
I think you're seriously underestimating Gagne's value to the team. They need finishers and he's a finisher. I guess it depends on what you can get for him, but players like him are completely necessary on a team that wants to compete.
Gagne blew in the playoffs. He started of this season on fire then slowly resembled an average player. His concussion problems are scary, one more and he's done. In a perfect world (no cap) I keep him but you have to give to get something and if he has any value there's no better time to move him than now.
Gagne's a finisher if he has someone setting him up to shoot into a half empty net. he can't create his own opportunities and he can't take a pass that isn't right on the tape and create with it. i would be ok with gagne if you tell me that giroux would be centering him all year, gagne's best years where when Forsberg was centering him and setting him up for easy goals.

Every finisher needs a setup man. I'm not arguing that he is a superstar who can make shtein happen on his own night in and night out. I'm saying that he is skilled, plays both ways and knows how to find the back of the net. He's the kind of player that every team needs.
I also wanted to clarify what I said about this team needing a superstar. IGY said that superstars win playoff seriesesesese and I disagree with that. The Bruins don't have any superstars. The difference is that Boston plays like a well oiled machine.
The Flyers play reckless. They are the furthest thing from a well oiled machine that I've ever seen. On a team like that, a superstar can win you extra games. With a superstar I don't think that they lose game two in Pit. They probably also get 5 or so extra regular season wins giving them home ice advantage through a round or two. A superstar allows them to play reckless and physical with a greater chance of success.

The chances of Emery exploding in the Flyers' face would be about 85%. But man, if he was successful he might become one of my favorites. Goalies with zesty attitudes who like to fight and cheapshot opponents are what the Philadelphia Flyers are all about.
Yeah for a guy who has pissed and moaned about the Flyers lack of scorers, getting rid of the second leading goal scorer seems pretty logical.
Also, while he wasn't as prominent in the playoffs (then again who really was?), he still had the most goals for the team in the playoffs this year.
I agree that he'd be best suited to play with a guy like Giroux who can continually set him up. Not that Richards isn't a pretty good passer in his own right.
Richards isn't a top end play-maker either. He's a Brind'Amour kind of grinder. Plays very well offensively and has the guts to do everything but he isn't a superstar with out of this world talent and he still managed to set Gagne up plenty this year. I just don't see the need or the desire to get rid of a player like Gagne.
totally disagree on richards...hes an outstanding passer...they just dont have any great finishers
gagne is in his 30's is coming off a decent year and is one concussion away from being lindros...its actually the perfect storm to trade him
I love Gagne, but its time to move on, as IGY said he's one hit away from Primeau/Lindros territory. Gagne is only 28 i think though. If you can move him for Salary and prospects you do it. I'd still rather move Briere, but either one needs to be moved. I do like the Emery talk, he's a good goalie, and always looking for a fight
i thought he was thirty...hes 29 and will turn 30 next season...but in reality hes like 29 going on 34
I knew he was eitehr my age or a year older, either way, he's one hit from being a pudding pop
and that would of course hurt his value but id be willing to trade him for just draft picks simply to get rid of his salary
Westbrook is one hit away from amputation below the knees but you don't trade him away on the off chance that he might get hurt again.
Briere can farging piss off, but I think getting rid of Gagne hurts the team far more than it helps.

different sports totally different situations...but if the nfl had a real cap and the eagles were over it and had no chance at a title this year id trade weastbrook in a heartbeat
The reason the NFL is so great, and the Cap works so well is No Guaranteed contracts. I have no idea why people find that so hard to believe. It's the only system that promotes Parity.
They are different sports/situations but the comparison is valid. Do you value draft picks more than Gange's output simply because he might get hurt again? Everyone might get hurt. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

whats makes the nfl different is not guaranteed contracts...its an extremely soft cap and revenue sharing
Revenue sharing doesnt happen in the NHL? shtein, thats the only way about 8 teams even make any money. farging Phoenix is getting Bailed out by the NHL.
maybe they shouldnt have teams in anaheim, la, phoenix, tampa, dallas, florida, atlanta, carolina, nashville, san jose....you know, places where theyve never seen a day below 30 degrees and an inch of snow
then maybe teams would make some money
revenue sharing means little when you have a hard cap...i mean it might keep some teams a float in general but it doesnt imporve their product on the ice or lead to parity thruout the league
the parity exists because the richest teams cant greatly outspend the poorest because of the hard cap

the funny thing about the cap, there wasnt any difference in teams that spent and those that didnt. Look at TB/Carolina/NJ, teams that a Cap really never affected them, they knew how to build a franchise. Where as you had the Rangers who spent a ridiculous amount of money, and couldnt make the playoffs. Detroit is a tweener, their org is tops in the league, and they spent well, but they knew how to do it precap, and obviously still now.

Well, compared to San Diego, yes. Sub-30 and an inch of snow is rare.
I am still going to the game tomorrow night anyway, so I guess there is still a team here. Actually, the Canes are a profitable team, I think.
oh wow they get snow once in a blue moon. big farging deal.

outside of Raleigh, no one cares about the Canes. I will give it to the Raleigh area, they do sellout, but they just dont have a team that people want to watch. I love the Ducks, the ducks play a physical brand of hockey, not Detroits faggy diving finesse style. Detroit as of April had 1 fighting Major all year. Thats flagry.

QuoteFlyers vs. Sixers popularity contest
Which team is more popular?
Sixers
121 (12.5%)
Flyers
846 (87.5%)
Total votes = 967
I meant to get to this last week, not because I'm hockey's greatest defender or anything, but just because. And this admittedly is a little bit of an odd time to be wondering who is more popular in town, the Sixers or the Flyers, given their recent spectacular demises. But, well, here goes.
On 950 ESPN, Mike Missanelli is a huge hockey hater. He's a talented guy, he's kicking ass in the ratings -- really an amazing thing to watch -- and that's all fine. He doesn't like the game and that's not a big deal. Lots of people don't like hockey (although I would argue that Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby throwing dueling hat tricks at each other in the same game is worth a look). But his insistence that there are "10 times as many" Sixers fans compared to Flyers fans is just wrong.
I know, I know, "10 times as many" is just a conversational shorthand. But by any standard, you can't come up with anything approximating the claim.
Attendance, you know. The Flyers have outdrawn the Sixers for most of the last four decades. The haters dismiss that one with the idea that there are only 20,000 Flyers fans in town, and they all show up, and they have more money, and et cetera. OK, fine.
But television is different. Most everybody who wants cable has cable. There is no great economic barrier to getting it anymore. For the overwhelming majority of people in this area, watching the Sixers involves no economic burden. All it takes is click of your thumb.
And, well, the Sixers and Flyers were both just beaten in first-round playoff series after playing middling kinds of regular seasons.
In the regular season, the Sixers averaged a 1.4 rating (42,000 households) on Comcast SportsNet. The Flyers averaged a 2.4 rating (71,300 households).
In Game 5 of their playoff series against Orlando, the Sixers drew a 2.6 rating and peaked at a 4.1. In Game 3 of their playoff series against the Penguins, the Flyers drew a 5.2 rating and peaked at a 6.8, beating the CW and NBC in primetime.
One demographic: for ages 25-54, the Sixers did a 1.9 rating and the Flyers did a 4.6.
These are not isolated numbers, either. The Flyers have outdrawn the Sixers for years. These are real numbers, real facts, and they drive economic decisions by advertisers.
Now, we all remember 2001, when the Sixers went to the NBA Finals and enchanted the town. That was a special time. I will agree that basketball has the potential to build a bigger bandwagon than hockey in those kinds of moments because of overall familiarity with the sport among the people who climb upon bandwagons. But I also recognize that as a unique situation driven by two unique personalities, Allen Iverson and Pat Croce.
But day-in and day-out, the Flyers are a lot more popular than people think -- even here, even today. Hockey is not as popular as basketball but the Flyers are, in many ways, more popular than the Sixers

The Sixers have never been relevant in Philly except for a short period when a1ds was in town.
But, of course, attendance figures don't translate to popularity, right?
thats not the point
just about every sports fan in philly cares about the sixers. most likely they are 4th on the list behind hockey or big 5 or psu football, but they are on the list. the point is the flyers arent on a farg load of lists (poor people priced out, colored folk) and thusly, the sixers are more popular.
things i care about:
1 a/b: eagles/phillies
2 college b-ball - nova, temple, st joes, lasalle, penn, drexel
3 sixers
4 wings
5 soul
6 smarty jones
7 penn relays
8 hs debate teams
9 mds' sports blogs
10 flyers
That's because you hate the whites.

they all care so much they don't bother watching them on tv, going to games, or voting on stupid internet polls. Got it.
youre right. a city with a massive black population cares more about hockey than basketball.
and black people don't vote. not even on the internets.
In spite of every piece of actual evidence available, the Sixers are more popular than the Flyers. Trust me on this.

Just about every sports fan in Philly cares about the Sixers? Really?? Is that why they routinely play to half of capacity most nights and no one watches them on television?
Look dipshtein, we get it, you hate hockey. The fact is you've made that point enough already so shut the farg up about it and move on.
I don't really care about the Sixers.

That place where all those white rich Philly sports fans live that apparently definitely care about the Sixers. They care just enough to not go to the games or watch them on TV.

Hahaha. Exactly.
its not just a black and white thing....theres a ton of white people that dont even know what hockey is
then theres a small but vocal and strong segment of whites that will never watch a young black kids get rich just as theres a small vocal and strong segment of people who love hockey and dont even watch the other three sports at all
but go door to door in the area and take a poll of people and sixers/basketball will kill flyers/hockey....once again the difference is that a large majority of flyer fans are complete stepfords who have money and thus will go to games even when they were the worst team in the nhl...and im not cirticizing them for that they are awesome fans but it absolutely is what gives them an advantage in perceived numbers
You left out the part where absolutely no black people will ever watch hockey ever because it's all about race.

go into any inner city neighborhood and lemme know how many people are paying 75 bucks a month for comcast...trust me ive been there and these people are more worried about keeping rats out their houses or their electricty on and food in their kids mouths before they are paying for comcast
also neilson doesnt go into poor neighborhoods at near the levels they go into middle and upper class neighborhoods because advertizers know that low income people are less likely to spend money on their products
There are plenty of people who love the Sixers/Flyers.
There are plenty of people who hate the Sixers/Flyers.
There are far more people who like them both roughly equally.
The Flyers draw more fans and get higher TV ratings. All things being equal, which they are, as illustrated above, the Flyers are more popular.
Why is this being discussed again? Did you guys run out of boring topics to drive into the ground and decided to unearth this little gem?
the flyers are more popular im not denying that...because they have a fantatical base....what im saying is there are way more people in philly who like the sixers than the flyers
except toronto there isnt a single nba/nhl city where there are more hockey fans than basketball
edit: also minnesota since there are no blacks

I know penty of poor folks and they all have cable. And I'm talking white and poor and black and poor. The rest of your post is ridiculous. The original argument was 'which team is more popular', which I see you've finally conceded.
i mean if its that important to you that the flyers are more popular you can have it i dont care
but there are way more sixer fans than flyer...they just dont buy tickets like flyer fans do
and im quite sure you dont know what real poor is...go to the ghetto like i have many times for the big brother program...to give christmas to poor families...deliver food to the poor and then get back to me on how many tv's you see much less cable
also check out the distrubution numbers on the govt. converter box plan and who is requesting them....its incredible the number of boxes that are requested by poor urban people compared to suburbia
I grew up with a bunch of friends that lived in the projects, they all had cable. And that was 15 years ago.
not all projects are truly poor
go into north philly west philly...southeast dc...queensbridge....ect ect ect...
only about half the country has cable
that number is way lower in poor neighborhoods
the fact that youre even arguing this is amazing to me
again i work with these people i go into the places...but even if you dont it isnt rocket science to know that the more money you have the more likely youre to have luxuries like cable tv...just read up on it or like i said look into the over the air converter box distribution by the govt and see where they are mostly going
i can see you arguing this because of your love for the flyers...but you cant really believe it can you?
I love the Flyers and Sixers equally. As for your last question I can't believe you're still in denial after the stats posted in that article. You do realize Philly, the suburbs, and south Jersey are included in the demographic, right?
i dont really care anymore to be honest...this is old
if you want/think the flyers to have more fans then you got it
poor people have cable. they just don't watch hockey because they cant afford to pay their electric.
you have the most fans, you win
lets be honest here--if youre a NBA basketball nut like myself you'll obviously trend to the side of basketball being more popular because you love the sport--especially when they are doing well and have a legit shot at advancing far in the playoffs
I have a biased mind and very hard time believing hockey trumps basketball (or any sports) in popularity, but I wont argue those facts either
the poor people stole the cable
im not sure how this applies to specific cities but channels like usa and discovery are in close to 100 million households. meaning only about 10-20 million people have tv but dont pay for cable, since around 110-120 million households have a tv.
now some people only might have a channel or two in terms of cable, i dont know specific plans, but basically cable and broadcast are simply morphing into one big thing called television. there is no separation anymore.
however, as mikey pointed out, poor people dont even have that shtein to begin with so its not much of a discussion.
and the whole point is the sixers are bigger than the flyers. basketball is more popular than hockey. everyone knows this. a big sixer game will kill a big flyers game every time. and im talkin like game 7 eastern conf finals, not game 1 first round.
Shut up shut up shut up.
dont you just love learning new things russsssssty

Please kill yourself for prolonging this idiotic conversation (and for dozens of other reasons that don't need to be laid out here).
I would like at least 2 dozen reasons laid out, right now.
i dont know if its because their sport cant get on anything but versus or if its because half the league could go bankrupt at any time but hockey groupies inferiority complex is something to behold
You're retarded arguments from everything to this thread to the why rusty likes certain movies to make him feel good about himself are even more to behold.
i didnt have the heart (im liberal like that)....but thank you for doing that
Someone needs to save IGY from time to time.
Usually that task falls on jew boy.
Realistic Goalie Options this offseason:
Biron (wants a long term deal)
Emery(look test pass, 26yo, went to Finals, and can be dominant for extended periods of play)
Carey Price(MTL is done with him, Personally my favorite out there if the price is right, no way do they not ask for Giroux)
Lehtonen(RFA, but a package of JVR/Lupul should get it done)

Former Flyer Peter Zezel dies at 44
By Don McKee
Inquirer Staff Writer
Paul Holmgren was in Toronto yesterday on a scouting trip when he heard the heartrending news that popular former Flyer Peter Zezel lay near death at a hospital in the city.
"The last time I talked to him, I knew something was really wrong," the Flyers' general manager said. "But still, the news today is really tragic. For a young man . . ."
About an hour after Holmgren spoke with The Inquirer, Mr. Zezel's death was announced. He was 44.
According to Toronto newspapers and the Associated Press, nearly 10 years ago, Mr. Zezel was found to have a rare blood disorder called hemolytic anemia. The disease destroys red blood cells faster than the body can replace them.
Last week, the Toronto Star reported, Mr. Zezel went into a Toronto hospital for chemotherapy and also had his spleen removed. After the surgery, he complained of severe headaches, which led to further surgery. His organs began to fail, he lapsed into a coma, and he was put on, then taken off, life support. He died about 6:30 last night.
"I'm personally very, very sad today with the news of Peter's passing," Flyers chairman Ed Snider said in a statement released by the team. "I spoke to him last week when I first learned he was having problems. He was hopeful, as was I and all of those who loved him. Peter was a good friend of mine, and this is a real tragedy. He was a wonderful young man and a great member of the Flyers' organization. We are all saddened by his passing, and we want to send our condolences to his loved ones."
Holmgren said members of the Flyers' family were aware that Mr. Zezel had been fighting a serious blood disease. But still, the news hit hard.
"He always had a smile on his face," Holmgren said. "He was a breath of fresh air as a player. Being here [in Toronto], this is really a dark cloud hanging over everything."

I LOVED that team.
Straight out in front to Propp, shoots, SCORES!

Propp was a monumental douchebag.
back then? Or now?
He was always really cool when we met him at Kaminski's or anywhere else.
Mid 1980s. He was an icehole of the worst degree. He was a belligerent drunk and a mouthy, handsy motherfarger with women. He's lucky someone didn't crack his head open in Margate back then. Seriously.
oh yeahs, Flyers are close to being chosen as the team to play in Fenway. I'd be surprised if they chose DC as a market over Philly.
They'd be choosing Ovechkin, not D.C.
Do we even want the outdoor game at Fenway, knowing that it basically rules out the possibility of a record-breaking Beaver Stadium rivalry game anytime soon? The NHL (which wants the thing to be a major weekend- or week-long event) may never want a middle-of-nowhere college town to host it anyway. But, as a Flyer fan, I'd much prefer that matchup and venue.

this
nhl is trying to become the nba by marketing players not teams
this doesnt 100% mean flyers wont be picked but it wont have anything to do with market...not to mention right now with the caps train on full steam ahead in dc the hockey market isnt that much weaker than in philly right now in terms of ticket sales and tv ratings anyway
It'll be interesting to see what happens with these steroid allegations against the Caps.
