Dryden, who died at his home Tuesday, retired from performing 10 years ago, although he hadn't been working much before that.

Former heavyweight contender Jimmy Young has passed away. Young, 56, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack on Sunday at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. A slick-boxer, Young extended the great Muhammad Ali the 15-round limit and also faced the likes of Ken Norton, Gerry Cooney, Ron Lyle, Ernie Shavers among others. His greatest win was a decision victory over George Foreman that sent Foreman into a ten-year retirement. Young took the rope-a-dope a step further in that fight, ducking his head through the ropes to avoid Foreman's powerful punches. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Goddammit I loved that man. That's some funny shtein.
I've read and heard some gloating comments by family-values fargs who characterize Thompson's suicide as proof positive that his iniquitous lifestyle made him miserable. I know they couldn't be farther from the truth, but it drives me nuts nevertheless. I'm in good company, though. His family doesn't want people pitying Thompson either, and is making sure the media knows that the suicide was not a rash act taken in the lows of depression or anger. Rather, it was a deliberate act planned well ahead, and carried out with courage.

QuoteDouglas Brinkley, a historian and author who has edited some of Thompson's work, said the founder of "gonzo" journalism shot himself Sunday night after weeks of pain from a host of physical problems that included a broken leg and a hip replacement.
"I think he made a conscious decision that he had an incredible run of 67 years, lived the way he wanted to, and wasn't going to suffer the indignities of old age," Brinkley said in a telephone interview from Aspen. "He was not going to let anybody dictate how he was going to die."
I really admire Hunter S. Thompson.
Not only that but supposedly he spent the last several days of his life surrounded by loved ones. That's as good of a fairwell as you can get, IMO. If he then wanted to spray his eyes out the back of his head and have his remains fired from a cannon over his compound, so be it.

i agree with you here. suicide is a cowardly act of finding the easy way out of things. while having absolutely no concerns of how what you will do to your family and friends. it's the single most selfish thing any person can do. i can't feel bad for anyone who offs themself. i feel for their family, and friends, and admirers. just not the person.

From the wife's comments, it would seem pretty clear that it was really neither courage nor cowardice in this case. It was just Hunter Thompson doing his thing his way as he always did. He figured his life would never get any better, so he went out on top. The fact that the wife's OK with it means probably a combination of that she'd grown to expect him doing whatever the hell he wanted all the time and also that she married him partially for his money.
Just my opinion, obviously.

I know where you're going with that, and you're welcome to the thought-- but I'd counter that having a kid is the most selfless thing you can do, if you aim to do it right. Everything I do is about "him" and nothing is about "me" anymore, at all.
But he IS you, get it? You're not "selfless" for just any kid..only for your own. Why? Because he is your little you, your little smack in the face of death inevitable. I don't hold it against you, it's natural. But selfless it is not.
I'd disagree. He's not a little me, and I have no desire to turn him into that. I thought long and hard before trying to have a kid-- and even longer when we decided we would try. There are too many people in the world and it's a tough place-- and I wasn't sure I wanted to impose that on a being. The more I thought about it, though, the more I thought that the world needed more good people, and that I thought I'd have a chance to bring something positive into it.
The death angle doesn't phase me; never has. I'll be long forgotten whether I had a kid or not-- I have no illusions or problems with that. Only thing is that now I don't want to die before I have a chance to finish raising him...that's really the only difference. Not that I "wanted" to before. ;)

Wow...that's just farging brutal. I can't even imagine that.
My final comment on the "Having kids is selfish/selfless" discussion, then I'll let it go.
I think you guys misunderstand me. I do not mean to say that you had kids so you could mold them into mini-Zanshins, mini-phillymics, etc. What I mean is that, they already ARE little Zanshins and phillymics, and that was the point in making them. You had to have your own, made from you. It's natural: people breed to create metaphysical extensions of themselves: Having your own children is really just a way of projecting your life past your death, of leaving to the world a piece of you--not necessarily so that the world will remember you, only so that you will continue to exist in a sense. It's a matter of instinct for self preservation which all species exhibit. It is only by reproduction that species can survive. Since your progeny is your preservation, it's more important (to you) than other peoples' offspring, and you treat them as such. You wouldn't for example gladly give up your life for my kid..only your own. In this way, reproduction is perfectly selfish; it's about preservation of self.
If all you wanted to do was raise good citizens/people, you could have scooped up unwanted babies by the handful and given them a good home. Plenty of crack babies and other unwanted kids in the care of the State. That would merit the term "selfless" much better than making your own.
One thing is clear: the world does not need another Diomedes, and neither do I.
Eh. I said before I understood where you were going with that, but I don't agree with the entire selfish thing. I have a bunch of thoughts about adoption and everything else that I won't get into here, though. I've, unfortunately, had to give that option quite a bit of thought and consideration. The conclusion that I'd come to was that I'd do it, but not in the way most people view it.
Anyway, if I was truly being selfish, not having a kid would have been easier. I could have discounted the affect on my family and my wife, and not have had the unbelievable responsibility that goes with it. If I was really being selfish, I would've picked something that would have allowed me more time to play Madden ;).

If I was really being selfish, I would've picked something that would have allowed me more time to play Madden ;).

Selfish is not necessarily easy. Many selfish things are difficult, time consuming, require responsibility, etc.
We need a celebrity death to put this thread back on track. :evil
True. But I think we're using different definitions of "selfish," which complicates things. At the end of the day, I'm happy with with my choices, you're happy with yours and all is right with the world. Well, not really, but it was a nice way to wrap up the sentance.

This section interested me:
QuoteEven though the atomic bomb designers knew its calamitous potential, the weapon's reality "was worse than we expected," Bethe reflected in an interview with The Associated Press in November 1996. "After Hiroshima, many of us said: `Let's see that it doesn't happen again.'"
Two points:
1. The atomic bomb was really a real-life, modern version of Pandora's box of Greek mythology. Once it was created, the world's people shared the same possible fate: nuclear annihilation. There is no turning back, and even the superpowers and wanna-be superpowers (US, Russia, China) must realize the threat of weaker nations that do not have as much to lose by starting a nuclear war, or terrorists that can get their hands on nuclear materials that are all to easily attainable.
2. After Hiroshima? The next one (Nagasaki) was only three days later... :paranoid

He was 98 -- and is survived by a wife, plus a son and daughter. Wow.....
For a man of such advanced age, he did stay active in the physics community. I attended a lecture of his at Cornell maybe 5 years ago.
As for the A-bomb being a Pandora's box, keep in mind it also basically ended the possibility of world war, by making such a war unthinkably terrible. The USA and USSR certainly would have fought it out if not for the bomb.
I don't think there's much danger of a nuclear war between two nations with sane leadership, even if the leadership is evil or stupid. The danger comes from people like al-Qaeda or Kim Jong Il having them, because those guys are cuckoo for Coco Puffs, and have legions of brainwashed drones who would actually carry out insane orders.

Why would a Wookiee -- an eight foot tall Wookiee -- want to live on Endor with a bunch of two foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense!
But more importantly, you have to ask yourself: what does that have to do with this case? (calmly) Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense!
Look at me, I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense.
And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberating and conjugating the Emancipation Proclamation... does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense.
If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.

Debralee Scott
AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (AP) - Actress Debralee Scott, who appeared in the sitcom "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and some of the "Police Academy" movies, has died, her family said. She was 52.
Scott died April 5 at her home in Amelia Island of natural causes, said her sister, Jeri Scott, a talent manager in Beverly Hills.
Scott came from a family of show-business insiders. Her eldest sister, Scott Bushnell, produced many of director Robert Altman's films.
Scott got her first major role at age 22, playing Cathy Shumway on "Mary Hartman." She later played the role of Hotsy Totsy on the show "Welcome Back, Kotter," and acted in 1984's "Police Academy" and 1986's "Police Academy 3: Back in Training."
She had been engaged to John Dennis Levi, a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who was killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
Scott had just moved to north Florida to be with her older sister.
Funeral plans were pending.

Former All-Star catcher Dick Dietz dead at 67 from a heart attack. (//)
QuoteDietz probably was better known, however, for what happened at Dodger Stadium on May 31, 1968.
Drysdale was in the midst of setting a major league record of 58 2/3 scoreless innings and bidding for his fifth straight shutout when the Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning.
Dietz came up, and was hit in the elbow by a 2-2 pitch from the future Los Angeles Hall of Famer. But before Dietz could take his base and force home a run that would break Drysdale's streak, plate umpire Harry Wendelstedt ruled that Dietz did not try to get out of the way of the ball.

Too bad he was tapped by Perot to be his running mate for Vice President, because after that debate where he clearly was overmatched in terms of public speaking, and a bit out of touch, he was widely ridiculed. Perot was a nut, this guy was simply getting old. He actually fell asleep at one of the Vice Presidential debates.

Breaking news: Chief Justice William Rehnquist :o
QuoteChief Justice Rehnquist Dies at Home
Sep 03 11:17 PM US/Eastern
WASHINGTON
Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.
A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.
"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.
Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.
His death ends a remarkable 33-year Supreme Court career during which Rehnquist oversaw the court's conservative shift, presided over an impeachment trial and helped decide a presidential election.
The death President Bush his second court opening within pour months and sets up what's expected to be an even more bruising Senate confirmation battle than that of John Roberts.
Rehnquist, 80 and ill with cancer, presided over President Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999, helped settle the 2000 presidential election in Bush's favor, and fashioned decisions over the years that diluted the powers of the federal government while strengthening those of the states.

I figured it would be either Scalia or Thomas, the two more conservative members. Between the president being Bush and the fact that Rehnquist himself was quite conservative, I would have been surprised if it had been anyone else, though O'Connor would have been a popular choice had she not retired.
I am honestly more interested in the person that Bush nominates to the Court. He named a person more conservative than people thought he would to replace O'Connor, and some will clamor for a more moderate choice to round out the bench. Will the choice be a woman? A Latino or other minority?
This one could be an interesting battle in Congress.
The Democratic Party doesn't have the spine or the backbone to stand up to anything Bush does.
They'll rubber stamp anyone Bush pukes up for fear of being labeled "un-American" or "disloyal." The GOP smear machine has gotten quite adept of making examples of those who don't simply go along with whatever lunacy BushCorp. offers up.
Neocons are always railing on about activist judges... boy, let me tell you, if Scalia is appointed Chief Justice, the American public is going to experience firsthand the meaning of the term "activist" with respect to the Judiciary.

If the Democrats can come out with a truly strong candidate in '08, they have a better-than-even chance of winning the election. If they come out with Hillary Clinton or another retread (in the Gore/Kerry mold), then plan on four more years of GOP rule.
I believe that Bush was ripe for the picking last year with a good candidate. Kerry mantra of "I have a better plan," all the while refusing to give any details as to what that plan might be, may have done more to re-elect Bush than anything Bush had done for himself.

Hillary definitely has some strengths as a candidate, but I believe that her weaknesses far outweigh her strengths. Even with her moderate record in the Senate, she is seen by many as a polarizing figure even beyond what Bush has been as President.
That said, I have little doubt that she could win the nomination. I don't believe that she would win the general election unless the GOP nominates an extremely weak candidate.
Earlier this summer I was wondering about a Hillary/Condoleezza race, which would be interesting. However, I don't believe that Rice would get the nomination, not at this point. You're probably right in that Frist may be the favorite in 2005, along with Rudy G. I also wonder if Colin Powell may have a go when the time comes.
This much is certain: Both the Democratic and Republican fields should be truly wide open for the first time since at least 1980. It will be interesting to see what happens in the '08 primaries.
Now a Hillary-Guiliani campaign would be interesting, in for no other reason that it almost happened in NY.
Frist may have screwed himself out of contention with his stem cell support, though, at least with the extremists within his party.
I can't see the Repubs nominating a black woman. Just too many fundamentalists with old school mentalities to see that happening.

Remember, Frist has also come out in support of stem cell research (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4777247&sourceCode=RSS). Not sure that the GOP is as unified on that as Bush would like to believe.
Not sure Rice even has the credentials at this point to make a serious run, and the GOP may try to ease away from the Bush legacy. I think that there's a good chance that their ultimate nominee is someone with little or no ties to Bush.

Ginger and Maryanne are still kicking, aren't they?
Apparently, so is the Professor (according to IMDB).
Apparently, Tina Louise (Ginger) is about to join a soap opera and Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) operates a clothing business...so they're both still kicking. And I think the Professor is around, too.
So basically, the moviestar and the rest are still alive.
Right. When I star in a sitcom, I'm going to make sure they put my fake name at the end of the theme song. It pays.
Make sure you pick a cool fake name though. Like Assfarger or Stevie Magoo.
If they pay me the going rates to be on some crappy sitcom, they can call me whatever they want. Especially if I get the "long life guarantee" of being at the end of the song.
Kids will know you as Stevie Magoo 40 years after you're dead thanks to syndication.
MICHAEL SHEARD Died Aug. 31, 2005 "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
Actor Michael Sheard died of cancer at age 65. "Star Wars" fans remember Mr. Sheard as Admiral Ozzel in "The Empire Strikes Back." Darth Vader used the dark side of the force to strangle Mr. Sheard's character to death when he allowed the Millennium Falcon to escape through the asteroid belt. Mr. Sheard appeared in over 150 films and TV shows. He portrayed Adolph Hitler in several films including "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission." In "Raiders of the Lost Ark" he was the German U-boat commander. Other credits include the TV remake of "All Quiet on the Western Front," "Force 10 from Navarone," "The McKenzie Break," "Doctor Who," "Blake's 7," "Coronation Street," "Z Cars" and "On the Buses."

Cops declined to provide details but Karsten's ex-wife told The Post that investigators have labeled it a suicide.
Karsten pleaded guilty in July to failing to report about $607,000 in income he made as a sideline reporter for ESPN college football games between 1999 and 2002.
He was sentenced to serve 11 months in prison and nine months home confinement.

Unless his father hated him, in which case he cleaned inside the boiler.

I know. God forbid anyone take a realistic look at this team right now. Shame on you FF.
It's interesting, I read this ESPN piece, get to the end with McNabb's comments. Slam at Reid?
Quote"We tried to spread them out and when you go through a game, you have to make adjustments quickly," McNabb said. "We did that with a couple of different looks, but we didn't start doing that until later."
So, despite going 0-12 with a pick, we went through the script and made no adjustments as the score got run up to 28-0. farging brilliant. My admiration of Reid sank even lower.
Also, check out the "approval rating" on that page. It's dropping faster than Bush's.

Just curious, what's the average death per day worldwide?
I'm guessing 9,846. That's an honest guess....If I guess it, I'm a farging lucky son of a bitch.
I wonder what the birthrate per day is. I know that it's something like 2 to 3 times that of the death rate. I think. Maybe not. That would be a whole lot of pregnant women out there...well...obviously women...but maybe I'll change my number to 1,569 deaths per day.......farg...that's still about 5000 people a day.......I'll move it to...........459 people per day that die.....so I'll take about 1200 new people per day.

Woah! :o I don't watch the WWE anymore but I knew who he was. Not really much of a surprise anymore when a wrestler goes before his time.
From WWE's official site:
QuoteEddie Guerrero passes away
Nov. 13, 2005
WWE is deeply saddened by the news that Eddie Guerrero has passed away. He was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Minneapolis. Eddie is survived by his wife Vickie and daughters Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.
Not shocked at all when a wresler kicks the bucket. The # of deaths in "pro" wrestling has been on a steady rise over the last couple of years. And I'm not talking about freak accidents like Owen Hart but young men in their 30's and 40's kicking the bucket out of the ring. It's obviously steriods or some other illegal drug. Wonder if these guys are going to get the hint? Doubt it.
Wonder if there will be a Congressional hearing on it? That would actually be pretty funny. McMahon could make a ton of $$$ on the PPV rights. It'd be the first WWE PPV I'd pay for in years.

Well....their government did, at least. But we killed a hell of a lot of civilians who had nothing to do with those decisions with the bomb. I happen to believe that more people would have died had we invaded however. Best of an untenable list of options.

Wasn't he the teacher in Better Off Dead? The one who wanted to date Layne's girlfriend?

She's certainly no Tia Leone, but she's still an interesting person who also plays interesting characters.
