QuoteChief Justice Rehnquist Dies at Home

WASHINGTON

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.

A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.

"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.

Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.

His death ends a remarkable 33-year Supreme Court career during which Rehnquist oversaw the court's conservative shift, presided over an impeachment trial and helped decide a presidential election.

The death President Bush his second court opening within pour months and sets up what's expected to be an even more bruising Senate confirmation battle than that of John Roberts.

Rehnquist, 80 and ill with cancer, presided over President Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999, helped settle the 2000 presidential election in Bush's favor, and fashioned decisions over the years that diluted the powers of the federal government while strengthening those of the states.

Scalia is going to be nominated to take Rehnquist's seat.

The news just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?

I figured it would be either Scalia or Thomas, the two more conservative members.  Between the president being Bush and the fact that Rehnquist himself was quite conservative, I would have been surprised if it had been anyone else, though O'Connor would have been a popular choice had she not retired.

I am honestly more interested in the person that Bush nominates to the Court.  He named a person more conservative than people thought he would to replace O'Connor, and some will clamor for a more moderate choice to round out the bench.  Will the choice be a woman?  A Latino or other minority?

This one could be an interesting battle in Congress.

The Democratic Party doesn't have the spine or the backbone to stand up to anything Bush does.

They'll rubber stamp anyone Bush pukes up for fear of being labeled "un-American" or "disloyal."  The GOP smear machine has gotten quite adept of making examples of those who don't simply go along with whatever lunacy BushCorp. offers up.

Neocons are always railing on about activist judges... boy, let me tell you, if Scalia is appointed Chief Justice, the American public is going to experience firsthand the meaning of the term "activist" with respect to the Judiciary.

The Democratic party has turned into a bunch of spineless fargs since Clinton left office. If they stopped tiptoeing around and letting the GOP thump their chests the country might not be in the mess it's in now.

LMAO. Given the way the country has been leaning, the only way some of the more liberal politicians get elected is to hide their persuasion. If they thump their own chests, they might as well go home.

If the Democrats can come out with a truly strong candidate in '08, they have a better-than-even chance of winning the election.  If they come out with Hillary Clinton or another retread (in the Gore/Kerry mold), then plan on four more years of GOP rule.

I believe that Bush was ripe for the picking last year with a good candidate.  Kerry mantra of "I have a better plan," all the while refusing to give any details as to what that plan might be, may have done more to re-elect Bush than anything Bush had done for himself.

I agree completely.  I truly hope both parties can give us a better option and more difficult choice in 2008.

I won't be holding my breath.  Best I can tell, they're just the right and left hand of the same beast.  Until someone kills them both, we're farged.  Shoot the politicians!!

It's a shame the only contending 3rd party candidate to surface turned out to be a psycho with a Napolean complex.

The more I pay attention to politics, the more these corporate-paid assclowns piss me off.  None of them do anything in the country's best interest whatsoever.  The traditional party platforms are falling apart and being replaced by convenient "compromises" (meaning diluted stances that mean nothing) or ridiculous extremes.

Farg them all.
