Truly a great man.  I heard him speak once and it was really interesting, didn't seem quite the way they portrayed him in the mini-series.  I wrote him a letter once and he responded and had me write him several letters after that.

Move over 85 Bears, you ain't got lightening

QuoteFormer Charger Shawn Lee passes at 44
Posted by Mike Florio on February 28, 2011, 5:33 PM EST
1994

Our NBC colleague and good friend Rodney Harrison, a rookie member of the Chargers' Super Bowl team of 1994, called to advise that his former teammate, Shawn Lee, died over the weekend at the age of 44.

NBC San Diego reports that the team has confirmed Lee's passing.

Lee is at least the sixth member of the 1994 Chargers to die entirely too young.  Defensive lineman Chris Mims passed in 2008 at age 38 due to an enlarged heart.  Offensive lineman Curtis Whitley died in 2008 of a drug overdose.  He was 39.

Linebacker Doug Miller was struck by lightning in 1998, at age 28.  Running back Rodney Culver died in a 1996 plane crash.  Linebacker David Griggs perished in a 1995 car accident.  He was 28.

The cause of Lee's death has not been disclosed.

Doug miller being struck by lightening would actually have been a very cool way to go if he had his helmet on. Plane crash merits honorable mention.

The world those kids grew up in seems so much smaller to me than the one I did.  A guy like Oswley Stanley dies, and the obits highlight how closely knitted he was into the fabric of a generation of American artists and nutjobs, and it feels like everyone knew everyone, you know what I mean?  Guys who had little in common-Zappa didn't use drugs-were still part of the same thing.  Patti Smith and Robert Maplethorpe hung around Janis Joplin and Kris Kristofferson at the Chelsea Hotel.  Not exactly people you'd think were cut from the same cloth, but they were.  All of them all at the same time were wrapped up in something much bigger, a real scene.  Zappa and Captain Beefheart and Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, all running around in the same area, playing with each other, what a time.

Agreed, it is one of my favorite commecials on TV.

My only real TSA complaint (the way I am preped to fly, I will never get to the fondeling point) is that they don't even seem to know the rules.  At least once every few months I get in an argument with some ex-retiree over my backpack.  It is TSA approved to allow you to keep your laptop in it (as long as nothing else is in the same pocket) so it speeds up the screening process.  Said ex-retiree then starts treating me like a criminal\punk (I do look pretty ragged when I fly :) ) and I respond with the rules around TSA approved bags.  An angry blank stare usually follows as I collect my things and leave.  If its obvious who has senority over him is around, I give them a friendly suggestion that the screener is unaware of a rule and it might be worth reminding (which I have seen them go over to him and chat most of the time).

Gotta love it when people know the rules better than the ones who are supposed to enforce them.  And that's the main problem with TSA.  They are mostly people who aren't really qualified to do the job in the first place or they don't give a shtein or they aren't properly trained.  And in some cases, all 3.
Title: Re: Dead in 2011

TSA agents need to be educated, highly trained and well-paid. We live in fear of another 9/11, yet our last line of defense on an airline consists of a bunch of county college dropouts who care more about texting than they do their jobs. On my last flight, I had the following happen to me:

I had 2 seperate bags with me as I approach the screen..I take off my watch and wedding band, put them in the circular thing and put it on the belt along with my 2 bags. As I get through, one agent takes one of my bags and another takes the other - in two completely seperate directions, both telling me to follw them. As I try to tell them they are calling me to two places at one time, my watch and ring somehow fall out of the thing they are in and my watch falls on the floor while my wedding band gets stuck in the machine. They stopped the machine, took 5 minutes to find it, then and some POS asks me if Ive ever flown before because I did not know how to properly put my belongings on the machine...After getting a supervisor and explaining the situation, he gave me his business card and told me to call him next time I fly so he can escort me through the line. Get the farg out of here.

The reason I got so worked up over this was because of an article I read just a few days before which outlined how TSA agents were stealing money and other belongings from eldery and foreign flyers out of Newark Airport - right where I flew from. Not the initial screener, nor his supervisor was competent or trained enough to handle the situation and for frequent flyers, its become a much bigger hassle than it ever should be.

Interesting. this is good to know if only to be a prick.

also, the randomness of the checks is totally bogus. i look like a pile of shtein too when i fly and can usually tell when i'm going to get the extra bag check pre-boarding and after security b/c i can feel the screener checking me out.

The TSA can suck my hairy beanbag. How many US planes have been hijacked in the history of US aviation? So we spend billions of dollars trying to prevent something that is unlikely to ever happen again. What's the point?

Do it right, with competent and accountable personnel or don't do it at all. I honestly think that we are no safer now than we were on September 10th, 2001, we're just WAY more inconvenienced.

Its only certian bags, where you can unzip them so the laptop is seperated from all of the other belongings.  And the laptop has to be by itself in the compartment.  If there is a magazine in there, they will flip out.

This is similar to the one I have. (http://www.amazon.com/SwissGear-SA1908-ScanSmart-Backpack-Black/dp/B002OHDIWY/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304446515&sr=8-1-fkmr0) Same brand, slightly different style, and I got it at Sams Club for about $40. Since I go through security at least twice a week, the fact that I dont need to use a single bin (except for my jacket in the winter) is worth the price.

As for randomness, I never been selected at DIA, but I have been at DCA a few times.  At DCA, it really is random.  The metal detector went off, and I gave the TSA person a "But I dont have any metal" type confused look.  He said "don't worry, its for a random screening".  They have the detectors there rigged to go off every now and then, apparently.

You are correct, Chuggy. Did you fly out of Bush or Hobby?

DH - EWR is chock full of theft complaints. The screeners and baggage people there may have the stickiest fingers of all airport personnel in the country.

When I opt out of the scanner they make ya stand there like a tool and don't let you touch your stuff. Sometimes it just sits at the end of the belt waiting for one of the dropouts to come collect it. So I always bitch that they leave my shtein laying there and they catch an attitude.

They always ask if I have stuff in my pockets like money or cards (I dont carry a wallet) and one dude asked how much money I was carrying so I told him none of his business and he called a supervisor on me.

What's the process on opting out of the body scanner? Will your plane leave if you are running late?

Do you have to strip down...and I have heard these fargers grope you. Any truth to that?
Title: Re: Dead in 2011
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on May 03, 2011, 03:32:42 PM
Your plane will leave you, yes. If you are not there 10 minutes prior to them closing the door, you'll likely get left.

If they try to force you to go through any of the scanners all you have to do is tell the loser TSA person that you don't want to go through. They will yell "male opt out" about 400 times and then tell you you're subjected to a pat-down should you refuse.

They then walk you through the metal detector and you stand there with a TSA clown while you wait for your molester.

They then give you a fairly invasive body pat down, putting their fingers inside your waistband and going up your legs until they "meet resistance" which means they will catch your sack.

After they rape you they swab their gloves to test for traces of explosives and once you clear then you're free to move on.

I always opt out and will never walk through a screener.

I'm not walking through any goddamn xray machine to get on a plane. That's an illegal search along with a dose of radiation.

The putdowns are not much better but I will not get an xray because the government says so.

That's the thing, you're not really protesting as the patdown is just as much a violation as the x-ray.  Anyone who thinks they are making some sort of political statement by declining the x-ray is mistaken.  If you don't want the x-ray, that's cool.  But they aren't going to go away just because you elect not to use them.

Actually they do track the number of opt outs.

And many travelers have protested in refusing to walk through them. An Alaskan politician actually refused both and just didn't fly back to Alaska- she took a boat.

Go check out FlyerTalk's travel/safety security forum and see the lengths people go trough in protesting this garbage. I will take a patdown before they xray me. Only time I'm getting xrays is from a doctor not the farging TSA.

That's a MA response.

No, you can't just drive it you don't want to be xrayed. People have to travel for business. And once again, it should not be a rule to have your body scanned to get on a farging airplane. What's next? Have someone have you squat and cough and get a full cavity search? All in the name of the rules and security, right?

Bullshtein - it is a violation of the 4th amendment.

And what if you want to go on vacation - should you just buck up and go along with the sheep/system and hop in the machines? Just to get on a plane?

If you have no issue with losing your privacy and freedom just to get on a plane - cool. I hope you enjoy it. But I don't. I don't get too wound up about things but this is one. I find it ridiculous that the US government forces its citizens to be seen naked just to travel around the country.

I should not have to drive (or not go) 24 hours to go home and visit rather than fly 3 hours because I don't want to be xrayed to get on a plane.

You can't bail on the scanner over health concerns.  The privacy issues on the other hand...

Sure, privacy issues are the top of the list, but I don't want to be unnecessarily xrayed. I find it ridiculous that I have to get into an xray machine to get on a plane.

If you were serious about privacy, you wouldn't use a cell phone, or use a credit or debit card.

I should not have to drive (or not go) 24 hours to go home and visit rather than fly 3 hours because I don't want to be xrayed to get on a plane.

it's not a MA response.  it's my opinion.  flying is not a right guaranteed to you by the Constitution.  there are rules that you need to follow in order to fly.  same as driving, just less restrictive.

now, the subject of whether or not these rules are actually effective is a different conversation.

And the main rule, that you must submit your body for an examination by some slacker or that you must be xrayed and looked at naked by some high school dropout, is unconstitutional. The TSA is a reactionary agency and the justification to do such things is non-existent.

I had no problem with the metal detectors and extra screening being a hand wand. I have a major problem with the government needing to see inside my body in order to get on an airplane. If you do not submit to some kind of invasive screening then you don't fly; what if your livelihood relies on traveling? What happens then?

This is a country where you should not have to have your farging body searched to get on a farging airplane. This isn't soviet Russia or North Korea.

Your opinion is kind of MA.  Flying doesn't have to be guaranteed by the Constitution (Bill of Rights, actually), but protection from illegal search and seizure is.  There is less invasive screening to go visit the White House or Congress.  Not to mention that there are plenty of things we do that are not specifically protected by the Bill of Rights.  Going to the grocery store.  Telephone conversations.  Using computers or the internet.  But I don't have to get felt up when I get my groceries and the gov't isn't allowed to tap my phone without probable cause.

The freedoms protected by the BOR are applicable to everything that we do as Americans.  Be it flying, driving, walking, riding a bike, shopping, talking on the phone, etc, etc.

It's so illegal that in our litigious bitchy society no one has sued over it.
Title: Re: Dead in 2011
Post by: Sgt PSN on May 04, 2011, 10:43:13 AM
No one would win a lawsuit over it, and that doesn't have a thing to do with right or wrong, but trying to convince a judge and/or jury that the feds have overstepped their bounds is a pretty tall order, especially in this case.  Besides, more people than not are happy to have their privacy violated because they are scared of hijackers and shoe bombs.

I still fly.  I go through the xray when given the option.  But that's because I know I'm clean and I prefer to get it over with as quickly as possible.  But I also don't have a problem with anyone who protests these ridiculous screening processes at the airports now.  Perhaps if TSA were better organized, trained and operated more efficiently, I'd bitch even less.  Maybe other people would too.

Just to give some perspective, the level of invasive security I have to go through every single day to get inside the gates at West Point is nowhere near the level of the invasive security TSA puts its customers through. And the security at the gates here are military police (most of which have served multiple tours), who each are each required to carry. THAT is the way TSA should be.

We aren't in a war with terrorism. Terrorism isn't something you can go to war against. The theoretical threat of it will always be present from now until the end of time. Should we sacrifice our rights and prviacy for all of eternity because some day someone might decide to do something crazy?

Of the millions upon millions of commercial flights that have flown before and since 9/11 how many of them were hijacked? Our sense of risk is farging out of whack that huge swaths of the population are willing to give up basic rights for the illusion of safety. There is no safety. And there is no threat.

We are a safe country BUT no matter what the government does we will never be able to completely stop someone from attacking us if they are hell bent on doing it. So in a fruitless attempt to create an impossibly safe world we are willingly sacrificing our privacy on the off chance that someone wants to blow up a plane.

The extra mile was the metal detectors + bags being xrayed + the behavioral detection officers (racial profilers) strolling the checkpoints + liquids being forbidden in carry-on's over 3.4oz + having your liquids that you bought past the secure zone on the airside of the terminal swabbed for explosives + more bag checks going down the jetway.

All of that is the extra mile.

The scanners didn't come into play until that farging wacko tried to explode his balls on the NW flight in Detroit (much like the liquids didnt until Reed tried to blow his shoes up).
But when you start xraying people and frisking them the extra mile is passed and you move into the realm of police state and taking away our freedoms.

I am not insecure to be scanned at all - I just have a major problem with the government forcing us to go through that bullshtein.

The only argument I can make for the "taking away our freedoms!" crowd is that you are not forced to fly. If you really, REALLY wanted to avoid it, you have other options. If the government were forcing all citizens to undergo these exams at all times, then you could say police state.

That being said, I agree with Phreak and Rusty....I just don't give a farg because I will probably never fly.

Nerd confession: Since I'm the type of person who longs for my childhood I've been watching old wrestling matches on youtube. I watched the Macho Man vs. The One Man Gang last week.

Some others I've watched include:
The British Bulldogs
The Hart Foundation (Bearhug clothesline)
Bundy And Studd vs. Hogan and Orndorff (Orndorff turned on Hogan)
Jake the Snake
Ricky Steamboat
Superfly Snuka
Demolition
LOD
Hercules
The Honkey Tonk Man
etc.

Watched a couple of late 90's stuff too like NWO, NWO Wolfpack the Rock, Stone Cold (when he was pimpin Austin 3:16) Mankind etc.

If he was white no one would give a damn. He'd be just another average dead white musician. But because he's black and played with a white band his status is elevated. Reverse racism at its finest.

QuoteAn official toxicology report has revealed that late "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn was drunk at the time of his fatal car crash early Monday morning.

Dunn's blood alcohol level was at .196, double the legal limit in Pennsylvania; he was found to be going between 132-140 mph when his car sped off the road, collided with a guardrail and was sent hurtling into the woods. Dunn had posted photos of himself drinking on Twitter just hours before the crash.

Also killed was his friend Zachary Hartwell, a 30-year old military veteran and friend of Dunn's.

On Monday, movie critic Roger Ebert posted a remark calling Dunn a jackass for drinking and driving; he later clarified, if not apologized for, the remark.

Stupid motherfarger.

What gets me is that the car apparently jumped OVER a guardrail (not that it would have made a difference). That's a pretty flat piece of road, so for a car to launch up a couple of feet like that...wow.

There is a little truth to that logic.  But the obvious difference between the 2 is that people volunteer for the military because they beleive they are serving the greater good, same as cops, firefighters, etc.  This guy acted wrecklessly and irresponsibly and paid for it with his life along with taking the life of someone else.

If it were cop by himself and he got hit hit in the head with a couple 24oz cans of beer, then I'd say he might have been ok to pull the trigger.  But that wasn't the case here.  One cop got hit so the other cop pulled his gun and shot.  If the story is true, then the cop violated both the escalation of force and deadly force policies.  Taser, night stick or pepper spray probably would have all been more appropriate.

Couldn't tell you a single song of hers, which is more indicative of my age approcaching Romey-ville than her talent.  Even as little as I try to pay to entertainment "news," you can't really be surprised by her death. Her life was spread out for all to see, her demons and addictions made into a gladiator spectacle.

The worst thing that can happen to many people is fame.  Apprently she had talent, but couldn't handle the demands and pressures that celebrity brought with it's enticements of fame and wealth. Her self-destructive nature eventually got the best of her.

Hopefully she can rest in peace.

From WWTDD...

QuoteGood. Good riddance. I'm glad she's dead. If I were at the funeral I'd tip her coffin over and kick the corpse. First of all her music was annoying, but much more importantly she had every chance in the world to get clean, to get off drugs, to save herself. She chose not too. People begged her. She ignored them. This wasn't some poor girl with no options. She had every option. She had access to the best care in the world. This isn't someone who made a mistake or two or twenty. She was an addict and she thought it was cute. She bragged about it in her biggest hit. If she didn't give a shtein about her life why should I? If I had a loved one with a drug problem I'd dig Amy up and tie her up on their doorstep like a Halloween decoration. Maybe it would scare them into getting clean. Or if nothing else I could just wait until Halloween to do it and kill two birds with one stone. My house would be the spookiest!

Not to belabor the point but this is exactly right.

Title: Re: Dead in 2011
Post by: hbionic on August 24, 2011, 01:52:10 PM
Not many people that aren't from the Philly area really gravitate towards Cheesesteaks. But people don't go so much for the food, but more for eating at two iconic food establishments that are at least nationally reknown.

Can't blame us out of towners for going there. PG and MURP took me there, and now I can brag to people that I went there.

But every person from Philly says that they've 'had better' when it comes to cheesesteaks. Always. Regardless, I went to Pat's and Geno's and ran up the steps at the museum, like a douche, and I'm a better person for it. I'd go to Pat's and Geno's again, farg it if better cheesesteaks exist, people could give two fargs about that.

Agreed.

Pat's and Geno's are decent steaks, not the best in the city but respectable by cheesesteak standards. It's trendy for locals to say they blow since it's where out of towners go.

When you don't eat then very often and you go home for a couple days there is not such thing as a bad one. I'd scarf down Pat's or Geno's all day compared to the slop served in most areas and called a Philly cheesesteak.

The only two decent cheesesteaks I've found away from Philly are from a local place, Claymont Steak Shop...and at the country club I work at.

The Claymont Steak Shop ones are good but could use a little more cheese/grease, and the ones in the pub at the CC are nice and greasy with a decent steak/cheese ratio.

20 min later out she comes with an actual steak with a couple slices of cheese on it between 2 slices of bread.  Awful.

Not dead yet but scheduled to take the walk to the chamber tomorrow here in Texas is one of the scumbags from Jasper who dragged James Byrd Jr to his death by chaining him up to the back of their truck.

Good riddance, Lawrence Brewer (http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/brewerlawrence.htm)

When I worked on death row we took Brewer in on our shift. I was one who escorted him into his cell for the first time. After talking a big game while in the LTs office he was a punk when it was time to go into the cell for the first time. He laid on his bunk in the fetal position and cried for awhile. An ultimate piece of garbage, this guy.
