He was in bad shape.  I remember that playoff at The Masters with Larry Mize and Greg Norman where he was out of it after the second hole.  They showed he and his caddy walking back to the clubhouse.  The trek seemed to take forever.  Just he and his caddy walking across Augusta with no one around.  Incredible image.
