On the one hand, yeah...maybe a little too Dirty Harry for my tastes.

On the other hand, two 24oz. cans in a sack swung at your head like some kind of ghetto morning star could be pretty goddamn dangerous.  Suffice it to say, I'm not taking to the streets to protest the cop.

Without knowing all the details, I'd guess a stungun or one of those beanbag guns would have done the trick..

I'm all for cops protecting themselves, and even more for cops shooting the bad guys when the situation dictates (like they should have done in Grand Rapids last week), but I dont think it did this time.

If it were cop by himself and he got hit hit in the head with a couple 24oz cans of beer, then I'd say he might have been ok to pull the trigger.  But that wasn't the case here.  One cop got hit so the other cop pulled his gun and shot.  If the story is true, then the cop violated both the escalation of force and deadly force policies.  Taser, night stick or pepper spray probably would have all been more appropriate.
