Great season. Disappointing end and I hate to lose to the goddamned Penguins, but all things considered I'l farging thrilled with this season.
There are plenty of people around here with more insight into hockey than I possess. What do the Flyers need to do this offseason to do this offseason to improve. Gagne coming back would be an obvious lift. Free agents. Draft. What?
i wouldnt mind gagne retiring...its a complete waste for him to come back for ten games then get hurt again...when you get that many concussions in one year its virtually impossible to come back long term...id rather have his money and spot available for a healthy free agent or trade possibility
Rumor is, and ill say this is a rumor from someone who usually has good info from team sources that Gagne was not showing or experiencing any more concussion symptoms a week after he stopped playing. The Flyers decided to shut him down for the year to avoid any chances.
As far as next year, the Flyers are in better postion to get back than the Pens. The pens have 14 freeagents, only 9 signed thru next year.
The Flyers need to resign Carter, sign Umberger even if they sign low, someone will match, and they will get compensated with draft picks based on how much he's offered.
Prospal is gone, he said in the montreal series that he wants to play in the south so he can golf year round(Vinny the Vadge).
Smith is gone, he's a warrior but was absolutely horrible this year. He'll probably have shoulder surgery in the next 2 weeks, and that severely limited his play over the final 2 months, but overall he was not good.
Hatcher could be back, he's got one more year and has said he wants to come back to finish out his contract. At the same time, his knees are shot, and he played like every game was his last. If he retires they are in a good position, if he stays, its still not a bad place to be so he can mentor Parent.
Randy Jones, i like jones as a 3rd pairing guy with Kukkonen, i dont think he'll get any huge offers and will probably resign here.
Gagne, i want gagne back, he's your 2nd best defensive forward next to the gawd, and if he's healthy a 40-50 goal scorer. I wanted him traded, but honestly, he's not worth much with having applesauce for brains, and hisi contract isnt huge.
What they need
Another Dman, Parent came up and played well for the most part. He's still very young, but can skate very well, and has a great outlet pass.
I'd like for them to look at John Michael Lies from the Avs, he might cost too much, but he'd be a great 2nd pairing with Parent.
Goalie for the Future. Biron is going into his last year, and the Flyers have no young goalies in the system.

being a damn good young team, but seriously, they dont have any superstars so they suck
i think it would level the playing field if the flyers were given three pts for each win...yes theyd still have to battle the conspiracy but at least theyd get an extra point since their wins come that much harder than the rest of the league
not gonna happen but it would work
Fascinating.
After watching the playoffs, the lack of superstars is a very serious concern for me. It's great for them to have a deep team full of of 20+ goal scorers, but I don't see a single player who they can count on to take over a game or to realistically expect 95+ points out of. Wave after wave of above average talent can wear down certain teams, but they need someone truly elite to raise their expectations beyond the conference finals level.

it does suck, tough to draft superstars when you dont tank seasons, and when you do finish last, you still get farged and dont get the 1st overall, and get stuck with JVR

I completely agree with this. As much as I like Gagne guys with concussion histories are never the same once they have a certain number of them occur.
If he's healthy and completely symptom free, then sure, I'd love to see him back, but it just never seems to work out that way with those guys.
i think he will be "healthy" and def will be symptom free...but i also think the second hes comes back his clock starts ticking down to his next concussion...it could happen in the first preseason game or it could happen 40 games into the season but it will happen
It's amazing to me how well they competed with a very shaky defense, a streaky and averagish goalie, and an intermittent offense that lacks continuity.
Significant help at any area would greatly improve the team.
My favorite part of the hockey season is the offseason. All I can say is, it's about damn time.
It's easy to forget that they finished in 4th place in their own division and would have needed to beat all three division champs to reach the finals (something that's been done only once). Hopefully next year they figure out how to beat the friggin Devils on the road, compete for the division title and get easier matchups in the playoffs. At least they'll get a break with facing their divisional opponents only 6 times each instead of 8...

It's entirely possible that this team takes a step back next year if they don't add some pieces. They are not in a place where they can stand pat and expect the same or better results.

QuoteFlyers winger Sami Kapanen has decided to end his NHL career, announcing his retirement with one season remaining on his contract with Philadelphia.
Kapanen, who will turn 35 on July 15, is the majority owner of KalPa Kuopio, a team in Finland's SM-Liiga. He will wind up his playing career with the club, where he also got his start in hockey. Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen, a Kuopio native who also got his start with KalPa, is a minority owner of the club.
A report in Kuopio-based newspaper Savon Sanomat quoted Kapanen as saying that he informed the Flyers yesterday of his decision. A source close to Kapanen has confirmed the report. I am currently attempting to get further comment from Sami himself and from KalPa management.
Kapanen was scheduled to make $1.25 million next season and his retirement will save the Flyers the same amount against their 2008-09 salary cap.

Umberger or Upshall for Meszaros? (http://www.ottawasun.com/Sports/Senators/2008/06/04/5765041-sun.html)
I'd do that trade in a heartbeat
i havent seen enough of meszaros to make an educated decision but id trade umberger or upshall in a minute if i thought it could help the team
From what I've read about him he's like Coburn only not as good defensively. The way I look at it is if you can get a large mobile offensive defenseman that's only 21 for either Umberger or Upshall you do it in a hurry.
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 5'11", 200-pound defenseman Danny Syvret (SIHV-reht) from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Ryan Potulny, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
"Danny is a puck-moving defenseman that sees the ice well and will improve our depth," said Holmgren in making the announcement. "He had some success playing with Jeff Carter and Mike Richards at the 2005 World Junior Championship as a member of the Team Canada.
"Ryan was a good player for our organization, but this was a deal based on a need, as we added depth to our defense."
Syvret, 22, recorded two goals and 18 assists for 20 points and 43 penalty minutes in 63 regular season games for the Springfield Falcons and Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League this past season.
Potulny had better not turn out to be another Patrick Sharp
I guess the team understands they need better defense. That's good. I don't know either of the players to decide if the value was a good deal, though.
A 22 year old puck-moving defenseman sounds good. 20 points in 63 games is the beginning and end of what I know about this dude. Clearly, I'll be holding my breath for a move that says 'we're serious about contending' this offseason, and this isn't it.

Danny Syvret
Prospect Grade: 4.0 B (About Prospect Grades)
History
Was one of a handful of non-OHL players selected to play for Team Ontario in the Under 17 Championship in 2001 and he brought home a bronze medal. Was named to the OHL first team all rookie team in 2002-03.
Was invited to the Team Canada Evaluation camp in the summer of 2004 and made the final roster for the 2004-05 World Junior tournament. He took home a gold medal and scored the winning goal in the Gold medal game.
Had been overlooked in his first two NHL drafts. His plus minus totals over his last two seasons in the OHL were among the best in the league. He played a big role in back to back record-breaking seasons for the London Knights.
Talent Analysis
The worst thing you can say about Syvret is that he will never be 6'3 and 215 pounds. His strong skating is rarely noticed, as he doesn't get caught out of position much and with a talented group of forwards in front of him, he doesn't have to carry the puck up ice. He makes good passes and knows when to take the safe play off the glass. He didn't have much of a shot in his first two seasons in the league and tended to pass the puck off to teammates, but in his final year in the league he has developed a strong one timer and has been excellent at moving off the point deep into the offensive zone and burying some chances. Syvret is not big, but has strong legs and takes care of his own end with his smarts, positioning and skating ability. Despite the knock on him for his lack of size, he has never missed an OHL game due to injury and he plays big minutes for London.
Future
Syvret has begun the 2006-07 campaign in Grand Rapids and will fight for every minute of ice time he gets.
The Flyers have an abundance of forwards both in the NHL and minor leagues so trading Potulny for a decent defenseman makes sense. I was never that high on Potulny.
he wasnt a good skater, and didnt have a physical game. He didnt fit on the 4th line, and the team is full already. Not a bad deal if this kid pans out.

QuoteFree-agent update. The Flyers are negotiating with potential restricted free agents Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger and Randy Jones. Holmgren said he was hopeful of signing them but was not especially close. He was close to signing Riley Cote, another potential free agent on July 1.
QuoteIn addition to signing the Big Three, one of Holmgren's off-season goals is to add a defenseman. Brian Campbell, John-Michael Liles, Mark Streit and Mike Commodore are among potential free agents who could fit the bill.
QuoteGagne progressing. Simon Gagne, who missed the final 27 games after suffering a concussion, is working out in Quebec and champing at the bit to return, Holmgren said. Gagne has no ill effects from the concussion, and there's no way of knowing if he's fully recovered until he starts absorbing regular contact. Holmgren said Gagne needed to be in better condition than he was last year when camp starts.
QuoteHolmgren said there was a better than 50-50 chance that veteran defenseman Derian Hatcher would return to the club. That would make it difficult to sign one of the topflight free agents. Hatcher, limited to 44 games because of injuries last year, has a $3.5 million contract.
QuoteThe Flyers chose forward James vanRiemsdyk with their No. 1 pick, the second overall, in last year's draft, and he collected 11 goals and 23 assists for the University of New Hampshire this season. The Flyers wanted vanRiemsdyk, 19, to join the organization in 2008-09, but the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder has decided to return to college and delay turning pro.
QuoteCenters Zach Boychuk and Evgeny Grachev, defensemen Vjateslav Voinov and Michael Del Zotto, and goalies Jake Allen and Kevin Poulin are among the highly ranked players who could be available at No. 27.

If true, a bit high for a short-term deal.
I was hoping for a few more years or a lesser salary for a shorter deal.
carter is not that good but what else are you gonna do...not that hes ultra talented but his biggest problem is that he doesnt have the drive to bring out all the talent he does have...he plays hard about half the time...if he had 1/10th the desire that the gawd has hed be a frontline center
QuoteR.J. Umberger could be headed back to central Ohio.
Rumors are spreading in Ottawa that Umberger, who attended Ohio State, could be headed to the Blue Jackets at some point this weekend. No word on what the Blue Jackets would be trading to Philly.
The Flyers just re-upped with center Jeff Carter, according to Sportsnet.ca. Carter, who could have been a restricted free agent on July 1, signed for three years and at least $15 million.
Perhaps this makes it easy for Philly to move Umberger, who is not the No. 1 center lots of Blue Jackets are wanting, but he would significantly upgrade the position.
Umberger had 13 goals and a career-high 50 points this season in 71 regular-season games for Philadelphia, plus 10-5-15 in 17 playoff games.

Because this draft is especially deep at defenseman and would give the Flyers a good defensive prospect which they currently don't have (I'm assuming Parent makes the club next season). Marshall is okay but still has a ways to go.
Also, you trade Umberger you free up some cap space. They have an over abundance of his type of forward and Giroux will fill his spot just fine.
i dont care about getting rid of umberger but they better replace him with a defenseman that will help them win now
who cares about the depth of a draft if youre picking sixth...if its really that deep then theoretically they should get someone good at 27...regardless of the strength of any nhl draft the fact is half the top ten picks dont work out
QuoteWhile in Ottawa, Holmgren might trade one of his forwards (Scottie Upshall?) for a defenseman or more picks, or he could make a deal that will free some salary-cap space.
I'd hate to see the Flyers get rid of both Upshall and Umberger, who are higher energy players.
They are both fine players for what they are, but right now they can sell Umberger high and they absolutely should.
Getting rid of Upshall or keeping him would have absolutely no impact on my day. It's fun having a pest on the team, but really, who cares about Scottie Upshall?

#27 traded to Washington for 2002 1st-rd bust Steve Eminger (big d-man) and a 3rd-rd pick
Eminger has talent and size but has never put it all together. I don't see him as anything more than a 5 or 6 defenseman at best. He did play well vs. the Flyers in the first round. I'd like to think he could be another Coburn but I highly doubt it. Maybe they get rid of Kukkonen or this could possibly be a sign that Hatcher is calling it quits. With Markstrom and Carlson on the board I'd have rather gone that route than this trade.
despite good size eminger is a guy with offensive skills...one problem he produces no offense...and hes horrible in his own zone...hes still relatively young so maybe like pierre said last night a change of scenery will turn his career around.....very curious deal by the flyers...all they talked about leading up to the draft is how deep it was and how they didnt have enough picks...so then they trade a number one for a guy that so far stinks and a 3rd

I know none of this personally, however. Never heard of him before today.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6'0", 200-pound defenseman Janne Niskala (YAH-nee NIHS-kah-lah) from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Triston Grant and their seventh round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
Niskala, 26, recorded 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points and 81 penalty minutes in 80 regular season games for the Predators' American Hockey League affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, this past season. He led Admirals defensemen in goals (19, second among AHL defensemen) and points (44, tied for 11th among AHL defensemen). He was also a member of the bronze medal-winning Team Finland at the 2008 IIHF World Championships in Halifax and Quebec City.
Prior to joining the Predators organization for the 2007-08 season, Niskala played parts of the previous seven seasons with teams in top European Leagues, including Lukko Rauma (Finland - 2000-01 through 2004-05), EV Zug (Swiss - 2005-06) and Farjestad (Sweden - 2006-07). He registered 72 goals and 92 assists for 164 points and 369 penalty minutes in 296 regular season games over his final six seasons in Europe (2001-02 through 2006-07). He has led his team's defensemen in goals in each of his last five seasons. He led Swedish Elite League defensemen in points with 49 (19G,30A) during the 2006-07 season.
Niskala was drafted by Nashville in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

I like the moves for the Phantoms, and hope that one of these guys works his way up. Really have to wonder if Smith or Hatch are coming back. Smith could have just been a victim of injuries all year from how it sounds, and Hatcher has no knees left. They need someone that can create some fear on the ice from the backline, i just dont see who's out there on the cheap.

They're a little over $48 million right now. Factoring in Carter at $5 mill, Cote at $600,000, and Jones at $1.3 mill (what's being reported) that brings them to roughly $55 million. They're still going to have to sign Eminger to a deal too...my guess is he'll get a little over $1 million, so they're right at the limit.
They might be able to clear some room up if they can either convince Hatcher to retire or go on LTI. Love what he brings but he's due $3.5 million this season, is slow as shtein, and has almost no cartilidge left in his knee. If they see a guy they really like Knuble ($2.5 million) could be moved for draft picks. I'd rather they kept Knuble because he's good in front of the net but if they need to move him to upgrade the D then he needs to go. If Gagne can stay concussion free and Giroux plays as expected losing Umberger and possibly Knuble won't really matter.

I look at Knuble as a 3rd line winger, at that price, just have Downie there at 800k
Am I the only one that thinks Downie would make a perfect 4th line center? Who cares about playing time, let him work his way up. Since Hatcher hasn't made a decision yet I was thinking the Flyers should offer him a coaching job with the Phantoms. Players relate to him and he has a no nonsense approach.

QuoteFlyers Acquire Defenseman Ramholt from Calgary Greentree traded to Flames Philadelphia Flyers Jun 30, 2008, 11:57 AM EDT
Tim Ramholt recorded four goals and 20 assists for 24 points in 77 regular season games for the Quad City Flames (AHL) last season. (Getty Images)
The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6'1", 194-pound defenseman Tim Ramholt from the Calgary Flames in exchange for left wing Kyle Greentree, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
Ramholt, 23, recorded four goals and 20 assists for 24 points and 73 penalty minutes in 77 regular season games for the Quad City Flames of the American Hockey League during the 2007-08 season. He was also scoreless in one regular game for Calgary.
A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Ramholt posted six goals and 30 assists for 36 points and 134 penalty minutes in 144 career AHL games with Quad City and Omaha over the past two seasons. Prior to that, Ramholt had one goal and four assists for five points and 82 penalty minutes in 83 games in the Swiss-A league for Zurich (2004-05) and Kloten (2005-06).
Ramholt also spent one season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 2003-04, scoring nine goals and adding 27 assists for 36 points and 26 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted in the second round (39th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by Calgary.
Greentree, 24, posted 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points and 83 penalty minutes in 72 games for the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, during the 2007-08 season, finishing third on the team in scoring. In 12 playoff games, he had one goal and three assists for four points and 11 penalty minutes. He was also scoreless in two regular season games with the Flyers.
Over two seasons with the Phantoms, the 6'3'', 212-pound Greentree had 26 goals and 24 assists for 50 points and 85 penalty minutes. He was signed by the Flyers as a free agent on March 15, 2007.
In three seasons with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks (2004-05 through 2006-07), Greentree registered 41 goals and 59 assists for 100 points and 163 penalty minutes in 114 games and led the team in scoring all three seasons. He received Honorable Mention for the CCHA All-Rookie Team following the 2004-05 season.

I don't have a problem trading Phantom forwards who don't have a chance at making the Flyers for Defensive depth. But I get the impression the more they add these borderline NHL'rs the less likely it is they'll add someone via free agency. Looks like Holmgren is chucking a bunch of prospects against the wall and hoping one sticks. Also looks like Hatcher will be sticking around.

QuoteFlyers Acquire Niskala from Nashville Philadelphia Flyers Jun 24, 2008, 12:02 PM EDT

Niskala was drafted by Nashville in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
nice short life in O&B....he was just traded to Tampa for a 6th rounder in 2009.

Quotetraded D Denis Gauthier and 2010 2nd rounder to Kings for D Patrik Hersley and LW Ned Lukacevic.
why are they trading 2nd-rd picks for AHL players?
the hersley kid supposedly is a legit prospect. But i have no idea why they are giving up seconds like they are nothing
because then they don't have to buy out Gauthier and they get his entire contract off their books. and apparently Hersley has some decent NHL skills.
Does he have computer hacking skills?
he draws a mean liger
Hersley gets billed as a 2nd or 3rd line NHL d-man by Hockey Futures. Very good defensively with some offensive upside. Pretty solid prospect from the crap I quickly read just now.
Punching distance!
As evidenced by Richards, Lupul, and Upshall; girls only like guys who have great skills.
I heard Hersley is pretty good with a bowstaff.
The Flyers signed a Finnish defenseman that didn't play in the NHL last year (after a few years in Colorado)
Ossi Vaananen
1 yr, $1M
Flyers sign Glen Metropolit presumably as their new 4th line center. Played with the Bruins last season and had decent numbers for a 4th liner (11 G 22A)
Flyers also signed Nate Raduns (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?id=1911)
I like the Ossi and Metropolit signings. Ossi was a very good young player who got into a serious accident, hasnt really looked the same. Holmgren gets a new 3-yr deal and they signed Arron Asham
Gotta be a trade brewing, already 3 mill over the cap, this signing is weird.
QuoteFLYERS SIGN FORWARD ARRON ASHAM TO A MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT
(July 7, 2008) - The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 5'11, 205-pound free agent forward Arron Asham (AIR-ruhn, ASH-uhm) to a multi-year contract according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
"Arron is a hard-nosed aggressive winger that can play a lot of different roles for our hockey team," said Holmgren in making the announcement.
"I think it's great," said Asham. "I've always wanted to play with the Flyers. I think their style of game suits my game to a T. It's definitely going to be exciting to come here and wear the orange and black."
Asham, 30, recorded six goals and four assists for 10 points and 84 penalty minutes in 77 regular season games for the New Jersey Devils this past season and registered one assist and two penalty minutes in five playoff games.
A native of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Asham has posted 64 goals, 71 assists for 135 points and 537 penalty minutes in 498 regular season NHL games over nine seasons. In 23 career playoff games, he has registered one goal, three assists for four points and 22 penalty minutes.
Asham was originally drafted by Montreal in the third round (71st overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Flyers 2008 draft review
Written by: William Roark on 07/05/2008
Entering into the draft, the Flyers held picks No. 27, 118, 178, 196 and 208 overall. The Flyers would eventually select in a much different place and frequency due to a number of draft day trades.
It was no secret that the Flyers were looking to make a move, due to their proximity to the league's salary cap. Shortly after the open of the draft the Flyers announced a trade sending RJ Umberger to Columbus in exchange for the 19th and 67th overall picks in the 2008 draft.
The Flyers later traded the 27th pick overall to Washington for defenseman Steve Eminger and the 84th pick of the draft. Later they also traded pick No. 208 to the Anaheim Ducks for a future seventh-round draft choice in 2009.
Luca Sbisa, D – WHL Lethbridge
1st round (19th overall)
Born: January 30th, 1990
With the 19th pick overall, the Flyers addressed their perceived lack of depth at the defensive position by adding Luca Sbisa. The Italian-born Swiss defenseman played his first season of North American hockey in the WHL. Sbisa quickly showed he was capable of effectively skating the puck out of trouble and producing points on this stage. However, most impressive was the fact that he also displayed a very strong willingness to play a physical brand of hockey by outworking players in the corners, throwing open-ice hits and even dropping the gloves when the situation called for it.
By the end of the season, Sbisa had represented the Swiss at the U18 World Championships and completed a successful rookie campaign in the WHL by collecting 6 goals and 22 assists in 62 regular season games for Lethbridge. Then, in perhaps his best showcase of skill before the draft, Sbisa went on to lead all WHL defensemen in playoff scoring with 3 goals and 12 assists in 19 games.
Sbisa will likely spend another year in the WHL at least, but he has all the tools to be a quality NHL puckmoving defenseman in the future.
Marc-Andre Bourdon, D – QMJHL Rouyn-Noranda
3rd round (67th overall)
Born: September 17th, 1989
Bourdon, who competed versus fellow Flyer prospect Claude Giroux in the QMJHL championship, was named QMJHL defenseman of the year in 2008 after scoring 12 goals 47 assists and finishing the year with an impressive +39 rating.
Although Bourdon was overshadowed by some more high-profile defensive prospects, Bourdon displays many of the traits of a very solid NHL prospect. In addition to above average offensive skills, Bourdon is quite capable of defending in his own zone. He rarely gives up on a loose puck and is very willing, perhaps even eager, to play physically or drop his gloves.
Already possessing NHL size, Bourdon will need additional time to improve on his first-step quickness if he is to be effective at the NHL level. The Flyers, in the meantime, will hope the player they saw in the QMJHL playoffs develops into the kind of steady, aggressive NHL defenseman.
Jacob DeSerres, G – WHL Seattle
3rd round (84th overall)
Born: March 18th, 1990
With the 84th pick overall, the Flyers selected goaltender Jacob DeSerres. After an outstanding season with Seattle of the WHL where he played in 34 games and held a GAA of 2.28 and .922 save percentage, DeSerres saw his stock rise.
He displays very good lateral mobility as well as excellent rebound control and positioning when facing shooters. DeSerres also utilizes his big frame to take away the majority of the net and challenges attacking players aggressively when the situation calls for it.
DeSerres was regarded by some teams as one of the best goaltending prospects in the draft. While he was not as hyped as some of his fellow draftees, DeSerres has a good shot at becoming a professional goaltender in time.
Zac Rinaldo, C – OHL Mississauga
6th round (178th overall)
Born: June 15th, 1990
Although undersized by NHL standards, Rinaldo was selected by the Flyers in the sixth round for his agitating qualities. Rinaldo racked up an impressive 191 penalty minutes for Mississauga of the OHL in just 63 games.
Rinaldo should be able to use his skating skills and hockey sense to grow into a quality agitating winger.
There is some potential with this pick, but Rinaldo will need to continue to work towards developing in all aspects of the game and add on more muscle if he wants to ply his trade at the NHL level.
Joacim Eriksson, G – SuperElite Brynas IF
7th round (196th overall)
Born: April 9th, 1990
A relative unknown to many fans of North American hockey, Eriksson has been developing his game quietly in Sweden. In 2006-07, Eriksson played for the Swedish U17 team internationally recording a 1.25 GAA and .961 save percentage. In 2007-08 Eriksson continued his development with Brynas IF in Sweden. He also appeared in two games for Sweden in the U18 World Championships this year where he had a GAA of 3.00 and save percentage of .906.
Eriksson is a classic butterfly goaltender with good size and respectable lateral mobility. He will continue to gain experience internationally and try to challenge his fellow countrymen, the highly rated Jacob Markstrom, for playing time in Brynas and the Swedish national team.
One positive to Jagr going to Russia to play, is a Flyers Prospect got dropped off the team to fit Jagr.
Denis Bodrov, Dman, should end up playing for the Phantoms. His comparisons range from a more mobile Hatcher but lacking size, to a more physical Danny Markov. The Phantoms are going to have a pretty good Dline

QuoteAfter being traded twice in two summers, it appears Joffrey Lupul won't be moving this offseason.
According to the Team 1260 Radio in Edmonton, Lupul has agreed to terms on a four-year extension with the Philadelphia Flyers. An announcement is expected to be made on Monday.
Last season, Lupul scored 20 goals and added 26 assists for 46 points in 56 games with the Flyers. He added four goals and six assists in 17 playoff games.
After a successful junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Lupul was drafted seventh overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2002.
In two full seasons with Anaheim, the Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native amassed 41 goals and 87 points. During the lock-out season, he scored 30 goals with Cincinnati of the American Hockey League.
Following the 2005-06 campaign, Lupul was dealt to the Edmonton Oilers in the Chris Pronger trade. The 24-year-old struggled in the Alberta capital with just 28 points in 81 games and a -29 rating.
That led to another trade, this time to the Flyers along with blueliner Jason Smith. Defenceman Joni Pitkanen and veteran Geoff Sanderson were sent to the Oilers.
Great to see he's gonna b e around for 4 more years. If he was healthy, he was on pace for at least 30 goals, but hatcher broke his neckspine, and concussed him.

Smith is gone, and the assumed new captain is probably Richards.
I thought Briere wore the "A" since Gagne went out with injury.

Well, with Richards as the new C, they probably are going to name a new A, so either Breire is already it...or the makers are assuming he will be.
STFU.
Kimmo very well might be the C, with Richards and Gagne as A's.

No. Briere isn't already it, and that would be a waste to assume anyway, as the figure would be accurate without the "A" for the 2007-2008 season as a historical piece. So, no. You suck.

Thats awesome about Bundy. Propp was such a homer, back when the games were new to online broadcasting, i listened to Propp and the other guy(my brain is dead) talk about this girl who walked by. They started talking about how hot she was, and then Propp broke out and said what is she 14, then went on to talk about how you never know because they all dress so slutty. they had no idea the Mic was on during the intermission break.
As far as Clement/JJ, imo the best guys of any of the teams in philly, and probably top 5 NHL. Jackson tuned down some of his homerism with Clement around, and Clement is just the shtein.

Quote
With Antero Niittymäki on the shelf after hip surgery and no NHL-ready goaltending prospects in the system, the Flyers have invited former top prospect Maxime Ouellet to try out as a non-roster invitee.
Ouellet, the Flyers' first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, has been a major disappointment as a professional player after a brilliant junior career with the Quebec Remparts, where he was a teammate of Simon Gagne. At age 19, Ouellet made the Flyers' NHL roster to start the 2000-01 season before he was returned to the QMJHL. His two appearances turned out to be his only ones in a Flyers' uniform.
After turning pro, Ouellet played with the Phantoms and was subsequently traded to the Washington Capitals in the ill-fated Adam Oates deal. The trade came about because Jeremy Roenick and Keith Primeau were both injured at the time and GM Bob Clarke was concerned about losing one or both for the playoffs.
The deal was panned at the time, because Ouellet was considered the goaltender of the future and the 39-year-old Oates was an impending unrestricted free agent. As it turned out, Ouellet has fizzled out as a pro. Teams recognized that the butterfly stylist has problems with long shots and rebounds, and he's never become a confident (or confidence inspiring goaltender).
Last season, Ouellet played in the ECHL with Trenton. He has played in 12 NHL games between the Flyers, Capitals and Vancouver Canucks.
how can a team with their resources, and that has had a hole at goaltender forever, have no NHL-ready prospects in the system? that's inexcusable.

QuoteFlyers ready to soar
By Ross McKeon, Yahoo! Sports Sep 22, 11:36 am EDT
Yahoo! Sports
The Flyers weren't as good as their finish last season, which was one step shy of the Stanley Cup finals after a 39-point rebound from the 2006-07 season.
This is not intended to be harsh criticism of an otherwise impressive turnaround. Instead, it echoes the sentiments of general manager Paul Holmgren, who reminded his team after watching division-rival Pittsburgh march to the Stanley Cup finals that Philadelphia won nothing last season.
Holmgren looked at his roster, weighed it against the challenges of pushing the salary cap ceiling and continued to reshape a team that misinterpreted how the new NHL would look like in 2005. But now the Flyers have found a way back into title contention.
Like the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers, the Flyers are getting younger on the fly. That slow and plodding defense that came out of the NHL lockout is transformed to a puck-moving, mobile unit. The future up front is led by young veterans Mike Richards, Mike Knuble, Jeff Carter and Scottie Upshall. And the always unsettled goaltending situation in Philly suddenly wasn't the reason for a postseason letdown, as late-blooming Martin Biron took hold of the No. 1 job last season and wouldn't let go.
But maybe the biggest reason for optimism, in addition to momentum the Flyers bring into the new season, is the expected return of high-scoring left wing Simon Gagne.
The 28-year-old was limited to only 25 games early last season as concussion issues plagued the team's most dynamic offensive performer. Gagne figures to give Philadelphia a shot in the arm if he can return for a full season. He scored a career-high 47 goals in 2005-06 and added 41 the following season.
Gagne figures to pair on the first line with veteran center Daniel Briere, who struggled during his first regular season in Philadelphia after a big-money signing but was clutch in the deep postseason run.
The Flyers could have a formidable attack considering they're adding Gagne to a group that produced seven 20-goal scorers last season. They might be the only team in the division that can match Pittsburgh's arsenal, yet Philly might be able to play with more grit.
Last season's conference finals should serve as only a prelude to more intense battles between these two teams this season.
Last season: 42-29-11, 95 points, fourth place Atlantic Division, sixth place Eastern Conference. A great bounce-back season for the Flyers, who finished dead last (56 points) in the league the year before. Philly's run didn't end until the conference championship. Philadelphia beat Washington in overtime of Game 7 on the road in the opening round, upset top-seeded Montreal in just five games in the second round, and lost to intra-state rival Pittsburgh in five games of the third round.
Imports: D Steve Eminger (2007-08 team: Washington Capitals), C Glen Metropolit (Boston Bruins), D Bryan Berard (New York Islanders), RW Arron Asham (New Jersey Devils), G Jean-Sebastien Aubin (Anaheim Ducks), D Ossi Vaananen (Sweden), D Sean Curry (Boston Bruins), D Danny Syvret (Edmonton Oilers), D Janne Niskala (Nashville Predators), D Tim Ramholt (Calgary Flames), D Patrik Hersley (Los Angeles Kings), LW Ned Lukacevic (Los Angeles Kings).
Exports: D Jason Smith (Ottawa Senators), RW Sami Kapanen (retired), C R.J. Umberger (Columbus Blue Jackets), LW Vaclav Prospal (Tampa Bay Lightning), D Jaroslav Modry (Europe), D Denis Gauthier (Los Angeles Kings), C Patrick Thoresen (Europe), C Ryan Potulny (Edmonton Oilers), LW Triston Grant (Nashville Predators), LW Kyle Greentree (Calgary Flames).
Three keys to the season: First, the Flyers have to continue to hone in on effective first passes. The defense continues to evolve, and they cut the goals-against by 70 from 2006-07 to last season. Jason Smith brought leadership and a competitive edge to the room in his one and only season, but he's gone. Cagey veteran Derian Hatcher may have run out of time. His knees aren't allowing him to even start training camp. He was placed in injured reserve and there is concern if Hatcher will play again. That means the keys now on defense are Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Randy Jones, Ossi Vaananen, Steve Eminger, Lasse Kukkonen and maybe even Bryan Berard, who is in camp on a tryout basis.
Second, Biron has to prove last season was no fluke. After seizing the No. 1 spot in goal and appearing in more games than in any of his nine NHL seasons, Biron wants to be more consistent. Antero Niittymaki appears OK with falling back to a secondary role. The combination could work well for Philadelphia, but an injury or slump at this position could leave the team exposed because there's no one on the horizon ready for promotion.
Third, those mid-level scorers need to fill their assigned roles. We're talking about Scott Hartnell, Joffrey Lupul, newcomer Glen Metropolit and even the tough guys who can play on the edge – Riley Cote and Steve Downie. Philadelphia doesn't need huge years from any of these players, just consistent, disciplined performances that fit into coach John Stevens' successful system.
On the hot seat: Mike Richards suddenly has a lot on his plate this season. The 23-year-old, who was selected 24th overall in 2003 with just three years in the league, signed a 12-year extension in December and was bestowed the designation as team captain days before the opening of training camp. Richards nearly tripled his best goal output for a season with 28 last year, and he finished at better than a point-a-game player (75 points in 73 games). He'll likely play second-line center but will see plenty of special teams' minutes as well. A big season from Richards could have a trickle-down effect throughout the roster.
Poised to blossom: Keep an eye on rookie winger Claude Giroux. He's a bit undersized at 5-foot-10 and 180 lbs., but that kind of player has a place in the new NHL, especially when he has blazing speed, great visibility, playmaking skills and is willing to go into dirty areas to make a play. Wouldn't it be an interesting fit if Stevens could put Gagne-Briere-Giroux together? Oh, how the Montreal Canadiens would be jealous.
Analysis and prediction: Holmgren and Stevens have the proper vision, and they're executing their goals despite salary cap constraints. Look for Philly to stabilize this season, play more consistent and rise to the top of the Atlantic Division based on their balanced scoring, blend of skill, and grit and rejuvenated play in goal.

You'll see just about all of them (except possibly a few that are blacked out because of national blackouts). A lot of them will be with the other team's announcers.
I couldn't care less about the announcers. Never understood people's obsession with them.

Depends on where you get it, its 159 on DTV, might be the same price, maybe more on your cable system. As Geo said, be prepared for some of the biggest homers you will ever ever listen to(Pens,Lightning,Bruins) Supposedly Direct Tv is rolling out tons of the games in HD this year, and there are supposed to be more Philly Announcers broadcasts this year, last year there were at least 15 which was amazing compared to previous years.
And you'll get Playoffs too which is obviously a season onto itself.
If you get NHL Network, the Flyers/Canes preseason game at the Spectrum will be available at 1pm, hopefully in HD

Most of them don't bother me (Emerick is actually quite good IMO), but a few are absolutely horrible to listen to. Jack Edwards (Bruins) is probably the worst - went entire games about how dirty the Flyers were. The Sabres and Pens announcers are biased.

>> Flyers' general manager Paul Holmgren said this afternoon that 18-year-old rookie defenseman Luca Sbisa has "earned" a roster spot, regardless of Ryan Parent's health (labrum/shoulder).
That's what he told me moments ago. That's saying something because the Flyers, historically under Holmgren as both a GM and assistant GM, have always taken the cautious, developmental approach with young players.
"Yeah, and I'm kind of struggling with that in my own mind," Holmgren told me. "He has really earned a spot on our roster. I haven't seen a chink in his armor yet. He was going to play Saturday regardless of Parent's situation."
Holmgren confirmed that for now, the Flyers will start with the season with Sbisa on their roster, give it 10 games and see where they are at. They have until that magic number before returning him to junior (Lethbridge).
Holmgren also said he felt very badly for the situation Byran Berard and Jim Dowd got caught up in. Because of the injury to Antero Niittymaki (labrum surgery), the club had to sign J-S Aubin, taking up an extra pro contract to the 50 limit mark. "That changed things for both guys," Holmgren said.
Otherwise, I [Panaccio] think Berard would be here right now as the safety net on defense. Final rosters are submitted tomorrow for the season-opener.
As for Parent, Holmgren said the club won't know until tonight whether surgery is required but they are proceeding as if that is indeed the case.
"It's a bad break for him because Ryan had turned the corner," Holmgren said.

According to general manager Paul Holmgren, there is even concern that the young defenseman who seemed ready to step into a prominent role this season may need surgery and could miss significant time.
The decision will hinge on an evaluation today. Holmgren said previous examinations were not 100 percent conclusive, but there is a chance that Parent suffered a labrum tear in his left shoulder during a preseason game Sept. 25 against the New York Islanders in London, Ontario.
Today's the day he finally accepted the fact that yes, a black man is our next President.
He's pretty psyched about it.
they said during the broadcast that Parent will need surger and will be out 12-14 weeks

Palin's dropping the first puck for the opener vs. the Rags. Stupid move on the Flyers part, the Repubs part, and the NHLs part. This is going to backfire bigtime. I might be at the game and I'll booo loud.
dont they realize the only repubs in the city are the old white guard in the neast and them fargers cant afford to go to flyers games? this thing is going to be terrible for poor sarah.
It really could be any politician and they would get boo'ed. Even if it were just people being jackasses. But Sarah Palin, in Philly, is going to get humiliated.
QuoteRandy Jones, one of the Flyers' top-six defensemen, said this morning he probably will need surgery on his right hip.
Jones said he believes he has "tears" in his labrum. "There is a lot of messy stuff in there that is causing me a lot of groin pain and hip pain," Jones said.
Jones said he will meet with a specialist in Nashville, Tenn.
Jones' injury comes in a week when the Flyers announced that promising rookie defenseman Ryan Parent would miss up to 14 weeks because of shoulder surgery. The Flyers open the season Saturday night at home against the New York Rangers. *

not entirely true
barry would get a standing o if he showed up at a philly sporting event.
nutter would get a mixed reception imo, some cheering but mostly indifference.
Apparently ESPN950am is reporting the flyers are talking to the Kings about acquiring Jack Johnson, DO IT
In but they're gonna want young talent in return. I hope Homer doesn't go crazy because they're desperate for D.

The rumor is JVR for JJ. Pass.
from the Flyers website.
QuoteThe second overall pick in last June's entry draft, van Riemsdyk is considered to be in a class of elite prospects that includes only the very best teenage players in the world.
^^^^
no
JJ is a RFA next year
And JVR isnt a cant miss prospect at this point. I just havent seen it.
I wouldn't mind parting with JVR but package him in with some other shtein and get a guy like Bouwmeester
Bums.
Haha I think my favorite part of the Richards fight was Cote in the backround on the bench getting all into it while the rest of the bench was kinda chillin on their seats still. Cote is nuts.
I would bang Palin silly
What a crappy start
Serves 'em right for having that c*nt drop the first puck.

Hyperbole much?
Christ Killer is right. Snider sickened me with this bullshtein. It's opening night and instead of being psyched about it I was indifferent about it. And all because he played the political whore card.
farg him.
Who gives a shtein? He's the only owner in this town who spends money.

I guess that makes it all white then.
If Snider brings a title to Philly, he can bring OJ Simpson out there for fan appreciation night, I don't care. Snider has had a hell of a couple years bringing the Flyers and Sixers back on the map after things looked bad in 2006.
She's repellent and Snider committed a huge error in judgment by inviting her to Philly. What part of that are you failing to grasp?
Jesus Christ.
I don't see what harm it did. Morally maybe it was a little fraudulent and low, but there really was nothing all that wrong with it. People just don't think she is cut out to be in the White House, so they dislike her. She seems like a perfectly nice person, and I have no problem with what went on. I'm impartial to her either way.
It was stupid, and Snider should have changed his mind about it once word got out. I was laughing my ass off when the booing started, i cant wait to read about how the big bad philly fans booed her and her kids
and KingCole is right, Sbisa is a stud. The kid really is impressive for someone who's freaking 18.
i typed up a page and a half letter on friday to snider that i am going to be mailing on tuesday....its not pleasant
for him to publically come out and say it wasnt political when hes given tens of thousand sof dollars to the RNC over the last decade is pathetic and atrocious
Cut and paste please.
attach my name to it.

Cut and paste please.
no i literally typed it...on a typewriter at work...the govt still has those things
it basically was a lot of yelling about how a current candidate for office should not be politicizing a sporting event during an election...about how snider has always been a schill for the republican party and to say that it isnt a political event is disengenious at best and a crock full of shtein at worst...about her being invited to spend the game next to him in his box says all you need to know about his connections and that the night basically is a political rally for the republican ticket...how a lost respect for him big time over this...
and then more blah blah blah about how he should feel proud for supporting an incompetant mean waste of a candidate
basically a lot of shtein he isnt going to care about one bit
0% chance snider or anyone outside of an intern reads that, but i understand the need to vent.
the thing is a solid amount of the fans downstairs cheered poor sarah, so i suppose snider feels justified in his shameful actions.

lukacevic and a 4th for andrew alberts
QuoteAlready in an injury bind, the Flyers traded for an experienced defenseman today, bringing in 27-year-old Andrew Alberts from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Phantoms forward Ned Lukacevic and a conditional pick in the 2009 entry draft.
"We're better now with him than we were without him," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "He's a guy that's played over 150 games in the league and he's a young guy, he brings some enthusiasm, I think he's going to help us for sure right now."
Alberts is 6-5, 220 pounds and more of a physical defenseman than a puck-mover. He played in 35 games last season for the Bruins and had two assists and 39 penalty minutes.
He missed 47 games with concussion symptoms after being hit by the Flyers' Scott Hartnell in a game in the Wachovia Center on Nov. 26. Hartnell was suspended for two games by the NHL for the hit.
he can throw the hits, but cant take em, as Scott hartnell laid him out
meh
