So the salary cap is at $56mil and change. Where does that leave the Flyers?

They're a little over $48 million right now. Factoring in Carter at $5 mill, Cote at $600,000, and Jones at $1.3 mill (what's being reported) that brings them to roughly $55 million. They're still going to have to sign Eminger to a deal too...my guess is he'll get a little over $1 million, so they're right at the limit.
They might be able to clear some room up if they can either convince Hatcher to retire or go on LTI. Love what he brings but he's due $3.5 million this season, is slow as shtein, and has almost no cartilidge left in his knee. If they see a guy they really like Knuble ($2.5 million) could  be moved for draft picks. I'd rather they kept Knuble because he's good in front of the net but if they need to move him to upgrade the D then he needs to go. If Gagne can stay concussion free and Giroux plays as expected losing Umberger and possibly Knuble won't really matter.
I look at Knuble as a 3rd line winger, at that price, just have Downie there at 800k

Am I the only one that thinks Downie would make a perfect 4th line center? Who cares about playing time, let him work his way up. Since Hatcher hasn't made a decision yet I was thinking the Flyers should offer him a coaching job with the Phantoms. Players relate to him and he has a no nonsense approach.

I'd love to see Hatcher stay around as a coach, shtein, just pay him 3.5m in salary to coach

So after all those posts, basically where we stand is no chance at hell for Campbell right?

Also, weren't teams expecting the cap to be a couple Mil more than that?

Flyers waive Gauthier

Article says they will buy him out.  If true, he will cost $0.733 million each of the next two years against the cap.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6'1", 194-pound defenseman Tim Ramholt from the Calgary Flames in exchange for left wing Kyle Greentree, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

Ramholt, 23, recorded four goals and 20 assists for 24 points and 73 penalty minutes in 77 regular season games for the Quad City Flames of the American Hockey League during the 2007-08 season. He was also scoreless in one regular game for Calgary.

A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Ramholt posted six goals and 30 assists for 36 points and 134 penalty minutes in 144 career AHL games with Quad City and Omaha over the past two seasons. Prior to that, Ramholt had one goal and four assists for five points and 82 penalty minutes in 83 games in the Swiss-A league for Zurich (2004-05) and Kloten (2005-06).

Ramholt also spent one season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 2003-04, scoring nine goals and adding 27 assists for 36 points and 26 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted in the second round (39th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by Calgary.

Greentree, 24, posted 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points and 83 penalty minutes in 72 games for the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, during the 2007-08 season, finishing third on the team in scoring. In 12 playoff games, he had one goal and three assists for four points and 11 penalty minutes. He was also scoreless in two regular season games with the Flyers.

Over two seasons with the Phantoms, the 6'3'', 212-pound Greentree had 26 goals and 24 assists for 50 points and 85 penalty minutes. He was signed by the Flyers as a free agent on March 15, 2007.

In three seasons with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks (2004-05 through 2006-07), Greentree registered 41 goals and 59 assists for 100 points and 163 penalty minutes in 114 games and led the team in scoring all three seasons. He received Honorable Mention for the CCHA All-Rookie Team following the 2004-05 season.

I don't have a problem trading Phantom forwards who don't have a chance at making the Flyers for Defensive depth. But I get the impression the more they add these borderline NHL'rs the less likely it is they'll add someone via free agency. Looks like Holmgren is chucking a bunch of prospects against the wall and hoping one sticks. Also looks like Hatcher will be sticking around.

That's exactly what it looks like.

The good news is that it works in hockey more than other professional sports.  I think.  At least, it seems.
