Flyers defenseman Parent might need shoulder surgery

The injury to Ryan Parent's shoulder could be worse than the Flyers first believed.
According to general manager Paul Holmgren, there is even concern that the young defenseman who seemed ready to step into a prominent role this season may need surgery and could miss significant time.
The decision will hinge on an evaluation today. Holmgren said previous examinations were not 100 percent conclusive, but there is a chance that Parent suffered a labrum tear in his left shoulder during a preseason game Sept. 25 against the New York Islanders in London, Ontario.

Randy Jones, one of the Flyers' top-six defensemen, said this morning he probably will need surgery on his right hip.

Jones said he believes he has "tears" in his labrum. "There is a lot of messy stuff in there that is causing me a lot of groin pain and hip pain," Jones said.

Jones said he will meet with a specialist in Nashville, Tenn.

Jones' injury comes in a week when the Flyers announced that promising rookie defenseman Ryan Parent would miss up to 14 weeks because of shoulder surgery. The Flyers open the season Saturday night at home against the New York Rangers. *
