I'm almost as disappointed as people caring about Brandon Graham.
i like you too much to really roast you buddy.
and nobody cares about Brandon Graham. they care about Earl farging Thomas, the guy available at that pick. you know, (i know you don't) the all-pro, pro-bowl, ball hawking safety that would fill a grand canyon sized hole in their defense. that guy.
That still burns. It screamed of one of those "too smart for the room" moments. A highly rated, high-ceiling guy at a position of dire need basically falls into your lap...and you go the OTHER way. And, you're right, it isn't even about Graham. Even if he was worthy of that kind of pick, it still doesn't pass the sniff test because of the other factors.
at least howie had nothing to do with the pick

QuoteEd Reed says he didn't mean to. "This year, I took out an offensive lineman against Philly. It was bad technique on my part, and I took out the center's knee. Our coach talks to [Philadelphia coach] Andy Reid all the time, so I told Coach to send my respects for the center and let him know I didn't mean to hurt him, man. It was just the second game of the year, so he lost his whole season. That one preyed on me, man. I didn't know him personally, but I wanted to let him know that I had the utmost respect for him."

more the point, why are you watching it
Best nap I've had in years.
Watched the 1st half....probably the most I've watched of the thing since I was a kid. Half decent football from a NFC perspective but the AFC looked like a hot mess.
I watched part of it, just because it was sort of football. They need to scrap it or find a way to make it relevant. The players that go aren't going to lay anything on the line for an extra $25k at the end of the season. So, now you have the top tier players bowing out with "injuries" and the players from the Super Bowl teams who can't go, leaving an odd collection of runners up. The players obviously don't care, which makes it hard for anyone else to care.
This is a sport that requires inhumanly large and athletic men to mash into each other dozens of times per game. The object is to brutalize the opposing team on every single snap. Having a meaningless, all-star, don't-get-hurt version of the game is a travesty.
The pro bowl cannot be fixed. It's nothing more than a bush league marketing gimmick along the lines of Elvis Tuesdays or Hot Dog Fridays.

heres how sick sapp was....he was a DT and you are comparing him to DE's as far as sacks go
haley wasnt consistently great enough to be a hof imo....he also never had that monster year....he wouldnt even be mentioned as a hof if he didnt have the luxury of playing for the 49ers and cowboys....two legendary championship winnings teams
I think Sapp belongs because he was a dominant inside pass rusher - those are rare. I just think the others deserve it before him
sapp was an all around player more than haley certainly and also more than strahan altho to a lesser extent....its easy to make the hof from the end spot...not many have ever done what sapp did from inside

QuoteFormer Florida State quarterback Chris Rix recently suggested on the radio that former Florida State teammate Darnell Dockett is gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
In Dockett's view, there is something wrong with suggesting that he's gay.
And so Dockett went on a Twitter rant against Rix, vowing to "whoop[] yo ass" and other more profane statements.
The folks at Deadspin have the link to the audio and the now-deleted tweets. Rix has since apologized, but Dockett didn't accept, saying "f–k yo apology Hoyda."
The entire incident underscores the level of homophobia that resides within NFL locker rooms, further proving that the NFL isn't ready for a player to come out of the closet.
If the NFL were ready for it, it would have happened by now.
The first openly gay, active NFL player is going to sell a lot of tickets and be made for life. They'll be asking him idiotic questions like, "what's it feel like to make history?" And he'll say things like, "I'm jutht trying to focus on the game this Sunday." The ad revenues will not dissapoint.
I hope it'll be a 6'8, 400 lb white offensive tackle named Daryl and covered in biker tattoos.

I kind of hope he's not so much gay as he is prison-style omnisexual and proud. Someone so full of testosterone, rage, and steroids that he fargs anything vaguely holeshaped, whether woman, man, animal, vegetable or mineral. And openly talks about it in interviews.

The former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles is one of the most outspoken critics of plans to use taxpayer dollars to renovate the Miami Dolphins' stadium.
Norman Braman, an auto magnate who bought the Eagles from Leonard Tose in 1985 and sold the franchise to Jeffrey Lurie in 1994, lives in Miami and has ripped the Dolphins' proposal to ask taxpayers to finance about half of the planned $400 million in renovations to Sun Life Stadium.
"This is still welfare for a multi-billionaire," Braman told WSVN News in Miami. "It's wrong."
According to Forbes, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has a net worth of $4.4 billion. Braman believes that if Ross wants to renovate the Dolphins' stadium, he should pay for it himself.
Braman has long advocated for lower taxes and has been a thorn in the Dolphins' side for decades, always opposing the team's efforts to get taxpayer support. Recently the Dolphins began to fight back, accusing Braman of hypocrisy and saying he asked for public support from Philadelphia during his time as owner of the Eagles, while skimping on the team's payroll.
A public referendum on whether to use taxpayer money to renovate the stadium is expected within the next three months. The Dolphins are hoping to have financing in place by May 22, when NFL owners will vote on the host site for Super Bowl L in 2016.

QuoteThe NFL is proposing an overhaul to its offseason calendar, pushing back the combine to early March, the start of free agency to early April and the draft to early May, according to league sources.
The plan must be approved by the NFL Players Association, but the league already is pushing it aggressively, meeting on the issue most recently -- but not exclusively -- Thursday night in Indianapolis, where the NFL scouting combine is being held.
Under the proposal, all NFL teams also would kick off training camp on the same summer day, making it the official launch of the football season.
The idea is to lengthen the NFL offseason and make sure football is relevant during a longer offseason period with one big event in each month. It also would create a new revenue stream for the NFL, with each event producing added money for the league.
The NFL also wants to expand regional combines as a feeder competition for spots at the official combine in Indianapolis.

KC?
So if Cleveland wants him we'll see how good Chip really is at developing QBs.
Yesterday's narrative: Tom Brady's restructure is so selfless and all he cares about is winning, not about filthy dirty money.
Today's narrative: Tom Brady's restructured contract doubles his guaranteed money and means he'll get paid even when he's an injured 40 year-old.

alex smith to the chiefs is confirmed....supposedly for a second
edit: 2013 2nd rounder and a conditional mid round 2014 pick
it is a second...cant believe they got that pick for alex smith
49ers now have four of the first 93 picks in the draft
they have two picks in every round except the first and fourth
what andy wants andy gets
good luck throwing to.....
Horrible trade for a mediocre qb
Isn't he a pending fa too?
Wonder if they ship some of those picks for Revis. Their D would be amazing

Smith literally took a billion years to develop, but his numbers from the past 2 years say he got better. Maybe it was just Harbaugh's system but Reid definitely helps his QBs play to their full potential.
Smith will be the game manager for a year or two until whichever rook they get is ready.
My guess is he tries to get Nassib in the 2nd.

you dont give up the 33rd pick in the draft for a two year game manager
they are clearly trying to win now and in their minds he is their qb for the distant future
that said i agree he basically is a game manager which is what makes it a terrible deal
Steve Bono, Joe Montana, Elvis Grbac, Alex Smith, where 49ers go to retire.
I think Alex Smith brings more than stability to the position for the Chiefs. He gives them a chance to compete for the division. He's better than a back-up. I liked how he was progressing over the last couple of seasons like IGY said. Granted, he doesn't have anyone to help in other than Charles with the Chiefs, but he's the type of QB Andy likes. I think this moves makes the Chiefs infinitely better than they have been over the past 5 seasons at least. Also, it gives the fans hope or something new to root for.
I think the $$$ implications are well worth the 2nd round draft pick. At least for the short term.
Good trade for the Chiefs. A second round pick is nothing for a Pro Bowl level starter and that's exactly what Smith is. Argue it all you want but statistically speaking he was one of the top QB's in the league last year and into this year before he got hurt.

im not sure what you mean by money implications re: the chiefs but the 49ers made out like bandits on that front....they now get what is essentially a first round pick for second round money and clear almost 9 mil off their cap by moving smith
i would have to assume that the chiefs are going to re do smiths deal....he has two years left currently...i bet they give him more money and years
I can't get over how bad he was in the NFCCG against the Giants.

hes a pro bowl level starter when six or seven other guys drop out because of "injuries"
hes an ok qb...nothing special...can win some games if you have lots of other pieces...but he isnt leading your franchise anywhere...hes defintiely an upgrade at the position for them and thats counts for something...i just dont think its worth that pick
lol @ pro bowls
the only thing you need to know about pro bowls is that donovan mcnabb leads off his resume with them
wait so alex smith had gore, crabtree, v davis and a stellar d to make him the "one of the top qb's in the league before he got hurt" and he has who exactly now on the chiefs thats going to make him that happen again?
cmon man--apples and oranges of teams when making that statement. smith has proven that when he has to change systems over time he shteins the bed. you want to turn around a franchise alex smith is not on your priority list
Yeah, to be fair, he had like 3 different OCs and 3 different systems in his first 3 years or some shtein. Not exactly ideal situation to smoothly transition into the NFL.
The 2nd round pick is laughable but in comparison to who they could have drafted with that pick, it's probably a wash. I think Smith is a really good fit for Reid's offense. His mobility is underrated and his accuracy is about 10000x better than McNabb's ever was. I'm not saying that Smith is the 2nd coming of Montana, but he's definitely an above average QB.

I was going to add him but wasn't sure if he played for them.
The Cardinals gave up a 2 and DRC for Kevin Kolb. A.J. Feeley landed a 2. Remind me again why an established bridge starter like Alex Smith isn't worth a 2 & a 4.
He was 19-5-1 in his last 25 starts.
But of course that was because of everyone else on the team. If he weren't the quarterback they would have won all 25.
AMIRITE?!?
He didn't take them to the superbowl, so apparently he's awful.

showing example after example of terrible trades where a team gave up too high of a pick for a bad qb is not exactly the best way to make your point
but i can add one to help
chiefs gave up a high second for matt cassel
not to mention he now goes from throwing 20 passes a game to 40 with reid--and thats exactly what he'll be doing being behind every game....not exactly the strong arm qb i want doing that
Pretty sure he threw more than 20 passes a game. And he's better than anyone else on the Chiefs roster, or for that matter, the Eagles roster. I would have given up a second for him in a heartbeat, especially with the skill position players the Eagles already have.
Give me a guy who doesn't make mistakes, who manages the game with intelligence and poise, but who is also capable of bringing a team back in the fourth quarter (which he did six times in 2011) over Vick & Sunshine Bass any day of the week.
Other than the fact that you just described Donovan McNabb I agree. Add something about accuracy and it's a viable point.

im not saying alex smith is the worst qb ever or that he isnt better than vick or foles (btw they might be the worst starting qb's in the nfl) i just wouldnt have given up what kansas city did to get him
Teams have done worse with a 2nd round pick.
Yeah, ours.
After trading away mediocre quarterbacks for those second round picks, so Andy's already done better with this second round pick than he usually does.
i feel bad for rome
hes been so abused over the last 20 years by brad goebel, bubby brister, bobby hoying, ty detmer, rodney peete, koy detmer, doug pederson, donovan mcnabb, mike mcmahon, michael vick and nick foles that he wishes alex "maybe i can be an OK game manager" smith was his qb.

How sad is it to be an OAK fan? No talent and somehow still no money to pay to get some.
Flacco gets 6 years, 120+ million...highest paid player in NFL history
Awful contract for a average QB.
Phreak, I would agree with you if I didn't see him play in this past offseason. Dude didn't dazzle you but what stood out the most was that he was unfazed throughout, regardless of the situation. Almost like he didn't care. That must have rattled the opposing defenses knowing he wasn't shook.
I'll see him ending up with at least another championship by the end of his career.
He gambled big and won. He may not deserve it, but he earned it.
The dude holds the all time NFL record for most road wins in the playoffs, and his performance in these playoffs and Super Bowl were essentially flawless. I can understand why the guy underwhelms people but of course he was going to get a contract like this.
how much of the flacco deal is guaranteed
they were forced into doing it and at the same time know their team will stink over the next few years. boldin going down...defense losing its best players...its over for them. to their credit they won on their last shot and to flacco's credit he got caked off big time after a gamble.
but basically all baltimore did was safe pr face. by the time they can actually compete again im sure there will be an easy out to flaccos deal, or in the least an obvious restructure.
He's not "elite" but he's at the top of the 2nd tier QBs in the league, imo. Definitely better than average. During the regular season he seems a bit erratic and inconsistant, but big games seem to bring out the best in him. He's like Sheli in that regard. Don't know if I'd have given him $120 mil, but the only thing worse than overpaying him is losing your SB MVP for not wanting to pay him enough. Ravens probably kicking themselves in the ass for not getting a deal done heading into 2012. Would have been a lot cheaper.
Probably not kicking themselves too much since they walk by the Lombardi on their way into work every morning, and Josten's dwarves are busy forging gold and diamond rings for everyone in the building.
Guess I figured that since the Eagles value money more than championships that every other team did too.

I realized some time ago that it is literally meaningless how much money any individual player is paid. What the hell do I care what anyone pays anyone else? It's not my money. Lurie could give Vick a billion dollar contract for all I care. It's amusing to me now that people get so bent out of shape over what some billionaire is paying some millionaire.

this is next level thinking....if the next level was 1995
money in the nfl means even less because the cap is so meaningless
Well, I remember a time when my season tickets cost $10/game. Now they're $95/game. So what some billionaire pays a millionaire definitely affects me and everyone else who chooses to feed the bear.
You're complaining about ticket prices to a guy who rarely goes to games. You know this, right?
If more people were like me, tickets would be closer to $10 than $100.

You're complaining about ticket prices to a guy who rarely goes to games. You know this, right?
I wasn't complaining, just voicing my opinion. If I lived in PA or Jersey I'd be at every Eagles game, and a shteinload of Phils & Flyers games too. I would go because I'm a hopeless & pathetic Philly fan whose self-worth is largely empty without my sports teams affiliations.
But Dio's follow-up response is a good one. Sports fans are at fault for allowing the ridiculous escalation in prices to happen.
Eagles season tickets are sold at far below fair market value, as the enormous waiting list attests. In addition, I would bet that the increase of prices on the secondary ticket market since the days when you paid $10/game is even greater than the increase in the official ticket price.
There is vastly increased demand to attend Eagles games, and that's the main reason prices have gone up so much. It is not like the 1950s when this was the primary way the team made money. The ticket price is not a make-or-break financial calculation for the team.
Dio is right, with one caveat. Yes, prices would go down if demand to attend the games dropped steeply. But it's also possible for the price to decrease (or more slowly increase) when the public bitches a lot about the price. After all, fear of public (and political) backlash is the reason Lurie doesn't sell the tickets at the profit-maximizing price to begin with. The Eagles have raised their prices slowly though, and they've never been among the highest price tickets, so I doubt a big backlash is in the cards unless the team blows terribly for the next ten years and the region loses most of its interest in football.
Yup. If there's one thing about the Eagles you really can't bitch about, it's their ticket prices in relation to the rest of the league. Not saying their ticket prices are "cheap" but they aren't anywhere near expensive in comparison to what a lot of other teams charge. I'm guessing they've got to be somewhere around the middle of the pack on prices, aren't they? Somewhere between maybe 12-16?
And they're parking/tailgating prices and policies are still among the best in the league. So I guess that's 2 things we can't bitch about.
tickets are 95 because you sheep pay 95
if you want to go pay 95. if you dont then dont. no one cares.
my tickets are 75
dirt cheap for nfl football
yea exactly
you make 3x what i make and id pay 75 no problem if i could....other people want to pay 10 bucks because it was that way in 1972
flacco only got $52 million guaranteed
Haha @ "only". I get the context, but still....
how worthless is the nfl cap?
flacco will make 30 mil this year but only have a 6.8 mil cap hit
Brady's deal might be an even more apt example of how worthless the cap is.
Miami tagged Randy Starks, so Jake Long, Sean Smith and Brian Hartline are free to sign elsewhere
Dallas tagged Spencer
and it looks like Cook won't be tagged by the Titans because he was gonna get the WR amount instead of the TE amount
KC gave 5-yr deals to Bowe and Dustin Colquitt then tagged Albert
uh-oh Rome...KC got Bowe back...its on to the break-a break-a...
With Albert tagged and Eric Winston locked up on the other side, Joeckel's chances of falling to the Eagles just went up a lot.
or Albert moves back inside where he originally was
Yeah I think that's more likely. He was ok at LT but should probably be inside.
True, and they have a need at guard but Albert has gone public saying he doesn't want to play inside and tag money for a tackle is a lot to pay a guard. I would hope Andy(/Dorsey) would have learned by now to talk to the player before tagging to make sure he's willing to play where he is needed if he wants him inside. But not counting on it.

hahahahahahaha Reid doesn't learn; he already knows everything.
kc could also be using the tag as a security measure...it allows them to keep albert while they try and trade down from number one...if that doesnt happen and one of the tackles is their best player on the board then they take him and pull back the tag on albert
they also could be waiting on a louie louie diagnosis and see what comes out about his condition btwn now and the draft...if hes healthy he fits a need perfectly for them...so perhaps they end up taking him and keeping albert at tackle and ultimately signing him long term...however if LL is deemed to big of a risk then they again take fisher or the joker and let albert hit the market
Bizarro Joe announced that any new Browns season ticket buyers won't need a PSL, and if any existing PSL holders give up their seats, the PSL won't be transferred to the new buyer

they had 5 pro bowlers last season...yes i know pro bowl often means little but in the chiefs case all five guys are legit top end talent and in the mix with the best players in the nfl at their respective positions
they arent far away from being good and could easily make the playoffs this year in one of those basement to penthouse type turnarounds that are pretty common in the nfl these days
which is crazy when you have 4 of them on d--3 being LB's and Berry at safety-- and they were still 8th worst in pts given up per game
The quarterbacking on that team was just mind-blowingly awful.... if they even had the Arizona QB situation this past season, it would have been a huge step up in quality.

i wasnt even counting hali...i forgot he made it....i thought albert made it as a reserve
also bowe is easily a pro bowler if he has someone to throw him the ball
they also had arguably the worst coaching staff in the nfl....say what you want about andy but he is worth at least three or four more wins than romeo crennel....crennel and his staff is a big factor in how bad cassel was
They'll be 10-6/11-5.
can we please bet that the kansas city chiefs will not win 10 games
name your price
10 is their ceiling but a def possibility......11 is nuts
its definitely possible...just very unlikely. a number of things have to go right just for them to get to 8 or 9. realistically 6-8 would be a good number for them to hit.
also all of this depended on andy reid reverting back to his pre-2005 form. its tough for people to see but hes been a terrible coach for a long time now.
they should have won 6-8 last year
with a better qb a way better staff and a better roster - under .500 would be a really bad end result...in fact i think 8 wins is a given.....that said the toughest wins are going to be 9 and 10.....but i think they can do it in that zesty division
andy reid post giants comeback has been as bad as romeo. the job he did after that game...minny loss, gb loss, then 2 straight abomination seasons are on the level of romeo, bruce coslet, rod marinelli or any other terrible coach you could think of.
theres a chance of course the new gig rejuvenates andy and he coaches em up like an early 2000's nfc east game. but id be willing to bet that andy is dead. he hasnt been around since probably the 2006 jeff garcia run.
thats just not true
andy made the playoffs three straight years before heckert was banished and howie took over PP...the ship started to sink when they went all dream team and started acting like the taterskins...farging up drafts....trying to buy a team via FA....not saying andy didnt have something to do with it....but it had a lot more to do with the power shift around him imo
post 2006 run:
2007 8-8
2008 9-6-1 (lucked into playoff spot, albeit with a legendary week 17 win, road win over tarvaris jackson, road win against a division team, disgraceful loss to arizona)
2009 11-5 (solid season undone by back to back cowboys chokes)
2010 10-6 (in hindsight the kolb move was a mistake. he sucks. so did mcnabb at that point. vick was a flash in the pan...it was all good until the wheels came undone post-giants comeback)
2011 8-8 (record is misleading, this was a joke)
2012 4-12
his decision making...from keeping mcnabb around too long to choosing kolb to then choosing vick...all terrible. in game he is the worst in the league. his gameplanning and preparation always put him above everyone else but that began to fade over this time.
again the new spot, no more marty, new team, etc. all could work in his favor. but i just think the coach of 01, 02, 03, 04 is dead and gone and never coming back.
you can try and spin as negatively as humanly possible and boy did you....but at the end of the day in the worst run of his life he made the playoffs 50% of the time

Lost their defensive coordinator and as impressive as Russell Wilson was last year, I really need to see it again from a 5'10" (if that) QB to believe it wasn't a fluke. Can't really imagine anyone but SF being the favorite out of the NFC.
Russell Wilson improved as the year went on. He played with poise for a 5'10 QB. He definitely wasn't rattled being down in the NFC Championship game and got the lead back late.
Dude doesn't have to prove anything. I think he's real, the offense he plays in protects his small frame by being a quick offense...and he has a good o-line and a running back to help him. San Fran has lost the greatest kicker to never win anything. They won't be the same.
Gave up a 1st and 7th plus a mid-round pick next year
I really can't believe they gave up that much. The league is so pass friendly now that it's pretty easy to plug a rookie receiver into your starting lineup and get an immediate payoff. The days are pretty much gone of rookie QB's and WR's needing a year or 2 to adjust to the NFL. So unless it's a freak like Megatron or Fitz, there really aren't many other receivers out there worth a 1st round pick imo.
hes a true game changer....you cant just plug someone in and have them do what percy harvin can do....seattle last year had the best defense in the nfl and an excellent power running game....what they didnt have was the ability to shorten the field with a big play guy....now their young qb has that in his holster
its a very low one obviously and its in a vanilla draft
the concussions or vertigo or whatever he has would concern me but otherwise i think this is a bold move by a team that is a superbowl contender
Pretty much in complete agreement with IGY on this one. Harvin's impact on that offense >>>>> anyone they were going to draft with their 1st round pick.
The only reason I would pause for a second is the injury problem, but I'd still probably do it.

I don't blame them for doing it, I just think that they're giving up a lot for a guy with some questionable health problems. And I don't think he's really elite either. I know he has a pretty unique skill set and can change a game with 1 play (like PIMP, but more versatile) but I've never really seen sustained dominance from him. I don't even think he's played a full 16 game season, has he?
Seattle's in a position where they can afford to gamble and overpay a little bit for a WR though so it makes sense they'd do it. But just looking at what they gave up to get him, they def overpaid imo.

The 7th rounder is meaningless, the mid rounder being a 3rd and a 4th isn't that big of a deal (although they have been drafting really well). It's basically a 1st for Harvin. Considering this is a team that really only had one major hole, they got one of the most talented guys in the league at that position to fill it. End of the 1st round is hit or miss. That guy could be terrible, never healthy, or both.
Also, Boldin for a 6th = what the farg?

6th round is beyond a crapshoot. just eyeballing the 07 08 09 drafts i saw 2 kickers and pierre garcon as the only players of note. i also saw rashard barksdale.

Great trade by SEA to get Percy. Couple him with the other weapons and that's a legit O.
Also a very good deal by SF to get Boldin.
Ed Reed rumored to be going to SF too.
The Seahawks are legit contenders. Young talent, tenacious defense, throw in a few grizzled vets and these guys are going to contend with the Niners for the NFC. They'll be right on their ass. I'd be doing cart wheels if I were a Seahawks fan.
Niners are turning into the Yankees.
Quote from: Don Ho on March 11, 2013, 08:45:17 PMNiners are turning into the Yankees.
What? How do you mean?
Yeah, I'm not sure about that one either.
That was a poor choice by using the Yankees. I didn't mean in a bad evil empire way. I see Seattle signing some high quality free agents and becoming a destination where a lot of vets would like to play. Seattle is going to be a force. Could say the same about SF. They've both built one hell of a foundation. Unlike the Eagles who tried the free agent binge in 04 and the past few years, Seattle and SF are run by people who get it. Not a big fan of either head coach but both are taking their teams far.
Too bad we don't have the Niners front office guy or a coach from the Pac-12

Didn't realize Nix was more redneck than Buddy Ryan. At least it confirms that Fitzpatrick's front office hates him too, not just the fans
in the least surprising news ever tony gonzalez decided he will play next season
Is Nix the guy who gave Fitzpatrick his contract or was that someone else? I think it's pretty damn funny that it's out there in the open that the Bills are all but ready to cut him loose.
Yup, had one of those "farg, I shouldn't have done that" moments two years ago
Seattle released Leon Washington in case anyone wants a return specialist
Wallace to the Dolphins (5/$65M/$30M guaranteed)
Kruger to the Browns (5/$41M/$20M guaranteed)
Levitre (5/$39M) and Delanie Walker (4-yr deal) to the Titans
Louis Vasquez to the Broncos (4/$23.5M/$13M guaranteed)
DeAngelo Hall to the Lions (later denied)
Martellus Bennett to the Bears
Chase Daniel and Anthony Fasano to the Chiefs
Phil Loadholt stays with the Vikings
and Nix followed through and released Fitzpatrick
dophins also signed ellerbee and are hot on jared cook
The Ravens are kinda farged losing Kruger, Ellerbe, Boldin...who else?
oh yeah...Ray Ray, but he wasn't all that anymore. And Reed will go too I suppose.
I guess we get to see if Ozzie can round up a fresh batch of really good players for them in this draft.
ellerbee hurts but is replaceable
kruger i feel like is one of those guys that is good when hes a secondary type player that the defense doesnt really account for...now that hes caked off and had a huge playoff i think he gets some more attention paid to him and he will regress quite a bit
boldin is an expensive 33 year old wr who cant seperate....hes the exact kind of guy superbowl winning teams release and the kind of player teams an inch away from the superbowl obtain...so no biggie there
you cant lose ll these players and not take some sort of hit but the hit they take will be felt far more in the locker room and on the field leadership than it will on the field play
in ozzie you gotta trust
For what it's worth, Boldin not being able to separate doesn't mean shtein. He's never been able to, but dude catches everything in traffic and balls that hang in the air (cue Flacco's $120M)
He's also got to be one of the toughest mfers to play the game today, and his attitude is soldier. Crabtree has to be delighted.

it does matter because hes not randy moss...those 50/50 balls eventually start to go the other way....all credit to him he had a great run last year and got the job done but as he gets older the odds start to quickly go against him
hes a fine wr but the ravens wont miss him provided they make an effort to properly replace him
I don't think they miss him because Torrey Smith is ready to take the next step up, and plenty of #2 WRs are available. Just ask the Eagles, they have at least two and are possibly in the market for more of them.

Well, yeah, that's the point. Replacing him won't be easy at all. He won basically every single jump ball. That was the Ravens playoff game plan. Don't act like you know what you're doing, heave it up, let Anquan come down with it. Obviously he's going to get older, but with a guy who was never fast and basically relied on being stronger than every DB his whole career, he's not going to be age overnight.
Miami released Dansby after that Ellerbe signing
St. Louis gets Cook....5/$38.5M/$19M guaranteed
Jermon Bushrod to the Bears, so they're out on Jake Long

Absolutely laughable. Anyone who has ever played the game knows this is a bullshtein attempt to avoid future liability litigation and also flat-out impossible to legislate away.
CTE will kill an era/start a new era in football
The change is already happening.
Yeah i don't see how that is even enforceable. When you're about to get hit you lower your head, it's natural reaction
Really? Natural reaction? When I'm about to get hit, I open up my legs and block with my nutsack.
The penalty is for the top of the helmet, not the crown. Stop being over reactive babies.
anyone who has ever played pop warner remembers just about the very first thing you are taught are tackling drills....and the first thing they teach in tackling drills is to not lead with your head....yes this rule applies to the tackle-eee not the tackle-er but the same concept applies
the problem with this is that its inevitable that someone is going to lose a game because the call is going to be so hard to properly make on the fly....to make sure its properly enforced you are literally going to have to review every one of the calls...but really how is it any different than the existing rule that says the defender cant lead with the crown of his helmet
How this plays out is how it's enforced and how consistently it's enforced. I'm hoping they go light on the calls, but it's impossible to know now. I don't really like it, but I was at the game when Eric LeGrand lowered his head for his last tackle, so I get it.
Apparently this rule only applies when the ballcarrier is 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, so if it's first and goal from the 2, farg it, concussions for everyone!
the theory...which isnt entirely wrong....is that the faster the player is moving the more dangerous the play and obviously in the open field people are going to garner more speed than in the six feet from the two to the goal line....but if the top of your head gets jammed the right way it doesnt matter how faster you are running you could end up eating out of a straw
Speaking of guys that tackle with their head...Pollard just signed with the Titans
Ted Ginn Jr to the Panthers

the thursday league/home opener for the super bowl champ is a huge deal now not just for the team but for the city and the last time i checked it was the BALTIMORE orioles....if they cared about the city at all they would step aside for one night and switch a stupid reg season baseball game
Obviously the Ravens should have checked the Orioles' schedule before winning the SB. That'll learn 'em.
bullshtein
F the NFL and their spoiled-rotten insistence on getting everything they want. The home opener will be a big deal whenever it happens and if they cared so goddamn much, they could pay the Orioles actual money for the trouble...but why do that when they're the almightly NFL?

The NFL most certainly should have, as soon as the knew they Ravens were in the playoffs, and the same for every other team that plays games in the same stadium or immediate area as the local MLB team. A contingency plan that began in November would have a much greater liklihood of success than one that begins after the Super Bowl is over.
F the NFL, farg 'em farg 'em farg 'em.
im with you because i dont wanna see baltimore get to celebrate that night and have everything that comes with that game to show off your city....but if im a baltimore fan in the least im on the ravens side of things here
Whether or not it's the first game of the season, the home opener for Baltimore will get good ratings, and lots of press, and they won't have a hard time filling the parking lots or selling beer.
doesnt even remotely compare to the thursday opener...its like having a mini superbowl in your city
It moves the Sunday revenue forward a few days, that's about it. It's more hassle and more expensive for the City to police it, etc. On balance, I doubt it's worth much more than a standard Sunday game, if in fact it's worth more at all.
its worth way more....the celebrities..concerts....media....people from out of town coming in....locals coming into the city who wouldnt for a normal game...i dont know why im trying to explain this to you but trust me its not even comparable to say the thursday opener and all that comes with it is the same as a week 9 game
christ even if what it cost to police it was equal to just the attention it brings on a city it would be worth it.....you want your city to shine nationally and this is the perfect stage...baltimore went out of their way to promote their city by getting a stinkin grand prix race....you dont think losing this game matters?

....
Both the Ravens and Orioles released statements Friday saying that logistical issues will prevent the possibility of a baseball/football doubleheader on Sept. 5. The Orioles are scheduled to play the Chicago White Sox at 7:05 at Camden Yards that night while the NFL had also hoped to stage its annual kickoff game across the parking lot at M&T Bank Stadium.
However, after several days of talks and the Orioles' willingness to move their game up to 4:05, both sides decided there was too much to work through to pull off a doubleheader. As a result, the Ravens will become the first reigning Super Bowl champions to open on the road since 2003.
"After thorough discussions among the Orioles, the NFL and the Ravens, it became clear that holding both an Orioles' game and the Ravens' regular-season opener on the same day would create logistical situations that would cause serious issues for the city of Baltimore, and fans for both teams," Ravens team president Dick Cass said. "The Ravens greatly appreciate the willingness of the Orioles to adjust the start of their game in an effort to make this sports spectacular happen. But, in the end, anticipated problems with parking, rush-hour traffic, plus crowd and car congestion around Oriole Park and M&T Bank Stadium, will keep the doubleheader from taking place."
....
The two downtown neighbors, who bonded over the last year with the Ravens' vocally supporting the Orioles during their surprising run to the playoffs and the Orioles returning the favor during the Ravens' Super Bowl run, maintained Friday that the situation spurred no hard feeling between the two.
"The Orioles did make an effort," said Kevin Byrne, the Ravens' senior vice president of public and community relations. "They were willing to adjust their time. They went above and beyond. We appreciate that."
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti acknowledged ...that the Orioles were in a tough spot. He said that the Ravens would offer financial compensation to their neighbors. However to the Orioles, it was more a baseball matter than a financial one.
The Orioles and White Sox play the previous night in different cities and they didn't want their players to have a quick turnaround the next day, especially during a potential pennant race. The Orioles also doubted that they'd be able to get the necessary approval from the White Sox, Major League Baseball and the players association to make such a change.
Obviously, the NFL should show the MLB who's boss. Might makes right, USA! USA!

QuoteThis week's story that a gay NFL player is considering coming out was met with an interesting reaction from Domonique Foxworth, the former NFL cornerback who is now president of the NFL Players Association.
Foxworth said that not only does he think it's inevitable that a gay player will come out, but he believes multiple gay players are going to come out. Foxworth said on WNST in Baltimore that there are already multiple gay players in the NFL, and that when one of them comes out, others will see that they have nothing to fear.
"It doesn't have to be one player," Foxworth said. "When one player comes out, multiple players will come out, because they are in our league right now."
Foxworth said an openly gay NFL player would be a much bigger deal in the media than it would be to other players.
"When the public finds out about it, it's going to be a media storm and it's going to be a lot of press and a lot of attention, and probably not all of it's gonna be positive," Foxworth said. "But the NFLPA, as long as I'm president of it, is going to be behind that player and providing support."

Palmer to the Cards for a conditional 7th rd pick. The condition is that Palmer has to start at least 13 games. If he doesn't, the Cards don't owe anything.
Palmer isn't what he was early in his career, but that's still a significant win for the Cards.
If he actually plays, he's an obvious upgrade over Kolb, but I don't think the guy even wants to play football. Palmer checked out mentally when he "retired" and I don't think he ever checked back in since returning to football. Dude comes from money and has a ton of money. I wouldn't be surprised if he ducks back into retirement.
It would be neat to see him retire during a 3rd down in the middle of a game.

QuoteAlso going to require replays of all big/questionable plays on big screens, even if likely result of challenge to play does not please home team.
Didn't see this though. Another awful decision. I always felt that played into having home field advantage with the only exception being the SB since it's played on a neutral site. Home coach gets to take a look at questionable calls on the big screen, visiting coach doesn't. Too bad, so sad. I can't even believe people complained about this. I mean, there had to be complaints otherwise there'd have been no change, right?
QuoteIn other words, stay home and watch the game on teevee.
Surprisingly, I agree with this. I love tailgating and it's easily the #1 reason to actually go to a game in person. All of these things the league or teams do to "enhance the fan/game day experience" are a crock of shtein though and I can't say I've been a fan of any of them.
The Linc is 1000000x better than the Vet in terms of being able to watch the game. You're closer, have a better view, etc, etc and it's still a terrible environment. Farging Angry Birds on the big screen, Swoop's dumb ass frolicking around the stadium, playgrounds for kids, sit down restaurants, etc, etc, and now these stupid locker room cams. Yuck. If it weren't for tailgating, I honestly doubt I'd go to very many games other than maybe playoffs. I've got a big ass tv with a great picture and a premium surround sound system that makes my living room sound like the 700 level and I can actually hear Havas when he farts. I don't have to wait in line to take a piss or get a drink and I don't have to worry about people trying to step over/around me while they're going to and from their seats. No traffic, no drunks that I can't tolerate and no money out of my pocket.
Still, some of the idiots from this board are just barely fun enough to party with before/after the game that I'd still make the trek down to the stadium to hang with them for a few hours. Except matty. I'd drive across the country to tailgate with him before heading into an RNC rally.

Yuck. unless you are sitting in the fourth row corner end zone or another seat that only gives zesty and/or partial sightlines then watching the game in person is much better imo....my seats are like watching the coaching film and you can see infintely more than you could ever see on tv
if you dont like sitting outside or you want the luxury of being able to go to your refrigerator to grab something...dont wanna spend the money....the traffic ect...all the things that have nothing to do with watching the actual game then i understand but as far as see the game itself and all the intracacies that go along with it there is nothing like being there with a good view of all the proceedings
i admittedly happen to absolutely love just about everything that comes with games...just being in the stands and taking it all in makes me so happy...which is why i drive two hours to every game....but even if i wasnt a fan of all that or if tailgating was banned tomorrow id still go every week just because of what you get in terms of seeing the game
the only thing i hate is night games when they suck because of how far i have to come.....i cant stand having to take leave for a bunch of losers
Getting full field view and being able to see a play develop or watching a receiver get held 20 yds down field is great. It's the only "watch factor" that's better than seeing it on tv.
I don't "mind" all of the inconveniences that come with going to a game. Waiting in line for the bathroom would never actually be a determining factor in decided to go or not. Neither would traffic or drunks. The stadium experience has been borderline awful for me during the games I've attended though. Granted, I'm not a season ticket holder so I only get a couple games a year at most, but the crowd just seems terrible. I'd probably have a different perspective on that if I were sitting with the same group of people 8x a year for the last 10 years. That's really my biggest complaint. Everything else just goes with the territory of going to a public venue with that many other people.
But when you factor everything in, along with the quality of home theaters these days, I completely understand why people would prefer to watch from home instead of going to the game.

Just to be clear....when I'm talking about watching at home, I'm not talking about by myself or with Squaw. I'm talking about making an event out of it. 10-15+ friends, lots of booze, pizza, wings, etc, etc. I had a couple gatherings last year. They sucked because the Eagles sucked, but at least we could hold each other, which was comforting.
I've watched a lot of Eagles games by myself (or where I'm the only Eagles fan present) on tv over the last 18 years while living all over the country. That shtein blows.

This is just stupid. Immature punks who fire their agents because they're not drafted higher? Tape don't lie and neither do team needs. Neither does the interview process when teams meet with players.
These agencies put out money for training and travel expenses and then get left before collecting fees. I'm certainly not crying poor for agents because alot of them are clowns but to be blamed by players for draft positioning is just plain stupid and immature.
I forget it it was a 30 for 30 or another sports doc, but I recently saw something about agents.....specifically, upstart agents who don't have anything even close to top tier talent. The guy was some Asian dude who didn't even have a suit. I think one of the players he represented was actually drafted but it was in the 6th or 7th round. One of his clients was Robert Hughes, RB from Notre Dame. This dude ran a 4.8 at the farging combine and didn't get drafted. Shocking. The agent was working his ass off to get this kid signed as an UDFA, which he did with the Bears. And Hughes fired him.
It's easy to hate the Rosenpukes of the world, but it's also easy to forget about the fact that the agents handling camp fodder, ST players and such aren't really making much money at all and they're probably working 10x as hard as the "super agents."

Besides the 138291389 arm surgeries, Gronk now needs back surgery too and he won't be ready for camp
Dude's gotta be done, right? I mean, he might stick around for a couple more years because another team or 2 will be delusional enough to think that he'll ever get back to 2010 form, but as far as him being a dominant TE, it's gotta be pretty much over for him.
Disagree. The last three years he has double digit TDs. I don't see the back surgery as that big of a deal. Unless he fargs up that forearm again early this season, I believe he'll be gronkin it yet again. He probably will get injured again because he seems prone, but he's a force when he's out there and I think he will be for a few more years before entering an Antonio Gates-like decline.
I guess what I should have clarified is that if/when healthy he might still be a legit threat to go 10/100/2 in a game, but he only seems to be getting less durable with each passing year. And his injuries are lengthy to come back from. It's not like he just keeps getting ankle sprains or something. Seems like once he goes down, he's down for a while. His forearm is already an issue. And now he's having back surgery. Can't imagine that he's going to be all-around stronger after that.
Summary:
He's done but he'll still be a threat to go 10/100/2 every game.
Got it.

QuoteThe source cited Kevin Ware, the basketball player from Louisville whose leg snapped on a seemingly routine play, as the worst case scenario that this injury could develop into.
McNabb can school RGIII on how to show up to camp fat and out of shape. Then he can show him how to look like a raging dork off the field.

I'm surprised. Belichick doesn't usually go for players who bring that type of attention, especially if they suck as bad as Tebow. Now that the Pats have him, Jeffery gonna want him. He'll probably be an Eagle next week. Peace out Shady.
Belichick did take Ochocinco, Randy Moss, Corey Dillon and probably a couple others (though Dillon did have something left in the tank and was a bit of a problem child more than attention getter)
By the time Moss and Dillon got to NE, they had cooled off with their antics quite a bit. Moss was briefly humbled after spending time with the Raiders. Dillon finally grew up and wanted to win. Not to mention that both were exceptionally good players and filled legitimate needs for the team. Johnson couldn't play his way onto the field but I don't think anyone saw that coming. He was still thought of as a pretty good player at the time. And he wasn't much of a distraction that I can remember and was eventually discarded with little fanfare.
We know Tebow sucks as a QB, and even if he was half decent, he's not supplanting Brady. I think either Belichick is testing his own abilities or they're looking to move him to TE.

Just think about it like this: There a thousands of terrible things that happen everyday! Much worse than grown man knowingly hurting themselves for their glory and your entertainment.
Millions of children die every year in poor countries because no one cares enough to get them diarrhea treatment, which costs about $.35 per patient.
There are over a million women in forced sexual slavery on the planet right now!

Russell went HAM though: He hit one car while drunk, kept driving around, and then ran into a cop car, with a beer in his hand, hurting the cop.
The cop car he hit had pulled onto the shoulder specifically to pull him over, which means they saw how drunk he was from the front, and they probably had their lights on. And he plowed into them hard enough to hurt the cop, who is in an extra-protected car with his seat belts (do they use special seatbelts?). And he had no registration.

Pro Bowl is now a fantasy draft

Sounds almost Bettman-esque.
The more I think about it, the more I hate that idea. Let's say Trent Cole gets picked for 1 team and Shady is picked by the other. Shady takes a handoff and runs left, Trent Cole tackles him (albeit very gently) but Shady tears his ACL anyway just because shtein happens. It's already a total waste if someone gets injured in the Pro Bowl, but when you add the dimension of the injury possibly coming from your own teammate, it's a real WTF?
Same thing could happen during the Olympics with NHL players, and their season continues once they're done with the event
At least with the Olympics, the guys are playing for their countries, so it still sort of means something. And there's a medal if you win. The pro bowl a meaningless exhibition that the players themselves don't even care about outside of the free trip to Hawaii.
Theoretically, but that's the Olympics, not a money-grabbing exhibition and it's every four years.
nfl training camps contain harder hitting than the pro bowl...i wouldnt worry about anyone getting hurt in a probowl much less on a teammate vs teammate play

I'm not worried about it either. Chances are Cole would just let Shady go right by him, but there's always that possibility, as slim as it may be. When it happens in camp, that's just an occupational hazard that comes with prepping for the season. Practice = necessary. Pro Bowl = waste of time.
They should do what the NBA does and have a celebrity game with some recent NFL retirees. Who wouldn't want to see Beiber get trucked by Ray Lewis?
Justin Beiber is the best dancer.

The Pro Bowl is a joke in any format and is not long for this world. Honestly I preferred watching the old Quarterback Challenge.
Only thing that specifically bothers me about the new format is that they are doing away with kickoffs. That feels like a test run.
when you start deleting core historical parts of the game you have officially diminished the game. they better never do away with that in the reg season.
i know its the pro bowl but still--cmon now. "ok guys---everybody be careful out there, no hard hitting and lets all enjoy ourselves."
Just make the Pro Bowl a 5 on 5 on the beach. Two hand touch, no pads, no helmets, one blitz per drive. I wanna see some linemen running at 0.05 mph in the sand calling for passes.
It should really be one big tickle fight.

That's what they should do with pro bowl weekend. Eliminate the game, just make a list like the All Pro team and have some sort of skills competitions. Take the QB's that were voted to the pro bowl team and have them doing the QB Challenge. Have a some sort of "strong man" challenge and maybe a hot dog eating contest for the Corey Simons of the league. Hell, they could even do a talent show so that we can see DJax rap live. Shawn Andrews could be his DJ.
Yeah I never understood why the QB competition got eliminated....used to love watching that.
I watched the HOF ceremony and it was pretty good.
Larry Allen (one of two Cowboys I admired and liked - the other was Darren Woodson) said about his first date with his wife "she cooked me two chickens, fries, baked me a cake and gave me a 40" and then when he turned around to see his bust "it better have a dip in".

You're right, the damn game continues to draw viewers. As a tax paying citizen of the state of Hawaii I for one would love to see this game go. Other than the liquor and people watching (which i can do any day for free at any beach) its one big collossal scam. I still laugh at people I know who get all excited because "they're going to the Pro Bowl!". Which I always respond with "oh you mean the glorified touch football game". They build it up as if there is all this player/fan interaction which is the biggest crock of shtein. Years ago there was as the players stayed in Waikiki and security consisted of a Filipino woman about 4'9. The players are now sequestered out a remote Marriott resort with very tight security. Practice is a bitch to watch and having to witness grown adults throw themselves over fences to attempt to get an autograph is disgusting. Blow the game up. Have a big awards party on the beach. A little more fan interaction during the festivities either by buying a VIP pass and/or a few hundred lucky winners in a contest and it's a win.

I put the blame squarely in igy and Todd.
The fact that SD ranks as high as it does says all you need to know. Nearly half of their ticket sales for each game are to transplants living locally who want to see their hometown team and people who like traveling to watch their favorite teams play in 70 degree weather in Nov/Dec.
If I'm understanding their method correctly, they are taking box office revenue and then adjusting for the quality of the team, economics of the city, and other factors. Since most NFL games sell out, it seems like the main factor being measured is ticket prices (adjusted a bit for the economic health of the city the team is in). They assume that teams that can extract more money from their fanbase always will, to an equal degree. That doesn't seem like a true statement to me.
Compare that list to the list of 2010 ticket prices to see what I mean: https://www.teammarketing.com/public/files/2010_NFL_FCI.pdf

Not at all mutually exclusive. Ban stairs!

Sometimes you'll see a team carry two kickers on their 53-man roster. The Browns have decided to go with 0 kickers.
Why carry a player who will only get used once a game? They're just being smart.
Raiders are carrying two punters
Also smart!
They smartened up and cut one...Kluwe is the loser.
But they did also cut their 4th rd pick....QB Tyler Wilson....Matt McGloin beat him out
If CLE is not carrying any kickers it's because the FAs had the audacity to ask for at least the vet minimum.
I just imagined Joe Banner slamming the phone down after the agent asked for five bucks over the vet minimum..."farg that! We'll show them. No kickers!" *evil laugh*

Goldson has 15 PFs in the last two seasons which is more than any player in the league. It's not a hard concept to grasp, don't lead with your helmet. exactly
concussions are, essentially, unavoidable in football. but you can limit fairly serious ones if guys arent flying at each other head first. i watch a lot of high school ball and i can tell you thats not happening at this level. its really an nfl issue because the game is so violent at that level.
goodell isnt handling it great, hes a complete douche who made a hypocritical 360 on the issue once they started getting sued. but nevertheless the league stance had to change. the thing i would do is to make helmet to helmet plays reviewable. its literally impossible for refs to see at full speed if it hit the helmet or the shoulder pad.

QuoteThe NFL may add additional Thursday night games in the future, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the league's strategy, reported Tuesday that the league is weighing selling a second slate of Thursday games to a media outlet to pair with its existing 13-game slate on NFL Network.
The league isn't discussing specific terms with any media outlets, nor have any formal offers been exchanged, according to the report. But the person told the Wall Street Journal the NFL is disappointed the Thursday night games on NFL Network haven't earned better ratings.
The league's prevailing thought, according to the report, is that frequent Thursday doubleheaders could generate more interest.
Another option reportedly includes moving some Thursday night games from NFL Network to another outlet.
The NFL also won't limit itself to national cable sports networks as potential partners, and will consider online outlets, including Netflix Inc. and Google Inc., the person told the Wall Street Journal.
lol no chance they put games on Netflix, why even waste time typing that.
You're right that it would be a stretch to think they'd start with live games on a Netflix outlet, if only because of the subscriber distribution. That said, it would be cool if they'd foray into those waters by putting game archives on there.
Roger Goodell - ruining the NFL one day at a time.

I think it's hilarious, but at the same time if I'm either a Giants fan, player, coach, gm, or owner, I'm pretty furious that these 2 are publicly making light of this shtein.
Also, it's safe to say that both of them suck at fantasy football.
the thursday night stuff is bs according to the nfl
ratings are actually pretty good all things considered. the matchups arent amazing, nfl network isnt in that many homes, yet the games can clear 8-10 mil with ease. every other sport would kill a mexican for those numbers
The NFL is by far the most successful professional sports league in the country. The TNF game between inconsistent Chicago and winless NYG drew nearly 2mil more viewers than the Bos/Det playoff game, so it's pretty laughable when the league even indicates that they feel the need to continue growing their brand.
That'd be like Jeter saying that he needs more strange.
if there ends up being an additional thursday game i blame no one but the players....its clear goodell would wish als on every player currently in the league if it meant a few more television viewers.....the nflpa tho can stop this anytime they want
they want the money just like everyone else
the thing is they can probably get even more for a mnf DH or a saturday night johnson. if they are afraid of stepping on cfb's feet they can start the game at 9pm eastern on saturday and get good ratings.
start doing double headers on thanksgiving saturday
I'm looking forward to more games that showcase the lack of competent announcers. Don't stop until Dierforf is back in prime time.

After the team lost Bradford to a season-ending knee injury, St. Louis called Brett Favre on Sunday night, asking if the 44-year-old retired quarterback who is now a grandfather, would be willing to leave his farm to plow through the back half of the Rams' schedule, league sources said.
Favre hasn't played since December of 2010, but that didn't stop the Rams from reaching out to Favre's agent, Bus Cook.
One source familiar with the Rams' conversations said that, if Favre took them up on their interest, "it could break Twitter."
Yet the man who famously wavered over whether to play too many times to count didn't waver this time. Through Cook, Favre told the Rams that he was retired -- actually, really, officially.

I'm not so sure about that. Imagine trying to sell DeSean Jackson a contract structured as a backloaded annuity that won't escalate into 7 figures until he's in his 50s.
It might be easier to convert him to Mormonism first, but after that no problem. Money grubbing fargers, they are.
I have a difficult time faulting Steve Young here. He made one of the most brilliant business decisions of all time when he signed that ludicrous contract. Bobby Bonilla (he's a baseball player, Dio) made a similar deal and so did Bobby Clarke. Intelligent athletes should be commended for their business acumen, especially considering so many of them are colossally stupid.

This Jonathan Martin situation is interesting...
Reports were out there that Incognito was the main guy giving Martin shtein. This morning he defended himself on twitter saying he wants his name cleared. Then it was reported that he forced Martin to give up $15k for a Vegas trip.
Now more reports about younger players getting pushed to pay for stuff;
Quote@AdamHBeasley One young defensive player...has literally gone broke because he's been pressured to pay for older players.
They've gotten sucked into the Miami lifestyle, and the veterans are using the younger players as an ATM, I'm told.
Recently, a younger player was handed the tab for a $30,000 team dinner. The rookie minimum this year is around $400.000.
Richie Incognito indefinitely suspended by the Dolphins

Edit: PFT suggests Martin may have left because he was actually concerned about the death threats and the safety of his family (another threat involved Incognito stating he was going to track down Martin's family).

Totally agree. Guys a typical jock meathead. We've all seen them. Saw a shtein load of them in college. Bullied and intimidated his way through life. "Me play football. Me strong." Mongo mentality. Lock him in a farging cage.
If you were talking about an environment like civilized society, but this is the world of football and this is what is encouraged/expected/rewarded.
I agree, there are different ways of doing things, but all of a sudden, because some guy wasn't going to put up with it, and the organization doesn't want to look bad, they're turning their backs on Incognito where even though his actions were those of a brute, he isn't 100% at fault here, the coaching staff and organization also had a hand in this.
They should have recognized this and removed this atmosphere or philosophy from the get-go, only now that it is not PC are they doing something about it.
Miami Dolphins and the coaching staff are more at fault than Incognito in my opinion.
Coaches should be able to get through to these players in ways other than intimidation...but if that's the difference between winning and losing on the field, I'm not sure I disagree with certain tactics to see if a player is mentally fit to be relied on in the field of play. They always equate themselves as soldiers, or warriors and with that comes a mentality. Now, when the 'enemy' is staring at them from the other side of the line of scrimmage, can you be trusted on to 'battle' and not give in to the intimidation of the opponent.
Just a point of logic: The fact that the organization is guilty of tolerating and or encouraging a toxic workplace atmosphere does not necessarily mean Incognito is less guilty for his part. It's not like there's a finite sum of blame which when apportioned to the coaches means that the thugs themselves get less of it.
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/11/05/man-uses-stun-gun-on-wife-after-winning-bet-on-bears-packers-game/
Martin gets zero amount of blame for being the victim. Suggesting otherwise is akin to blaming a rape victim. Incognito indeed belongs in irons. Actually Neanderthals like him belong in gas chambers. Improve the breed and such.
I blame Martin for being bitchmade
You're such a gangsta.
That's just the Hat talking
If you allow yourself to be bullied after you graduate college high school, you deserve it.
You understand the difference between bullying and death threats, right?
I think we all agree that Incognito is at blame for his actions. There are no excuses for what he said. My view was more from a macro-point of view where it's a culture and he was acting within.
The same can be said about racists and bigots who have grown up in households, communities, and regions where their behavior was socially acceptable but it is still wrong.
Maybe this does blow the top off of the culture that is the NFL and it will have a domino effect throughout the pros and in college, where I feel it is more prevalent than the pros.
Quote from: Rome on November 06, 2013, 03:54:26 PMYou understand the difference between bullying and death threats, right?
Thank you. For farg sake, this is pretty simple folks.
context people....im pretty sure everyone knows (including martin) that incognito didnt literally mean he was going to kill martin when he left that message...and i suspect it was even him trying to be funny....if by small chance martin did really believe that it was a legitimate death threat then he deserves what he got because that happened in march and he remained a dolphin without telling anyone about the call until november

I understand everyone is wired differently but that is what I don't get - the lack of standing up for himself. And I am not talking about beating the shtein out of the guys either - just a straight up confrontation. I am a firm believer in "confrontation breeds clarity".

For me it's more that Incognito has always been a punk. Even without this incident the guy's a fleshpop. I know he caused a lot of shtein on the Rams but now we're hearing he was a douche in college too.
I coach high school sports and the boys give each other massive amounts of crap. 95% can handle it and take it in stride. There are a few who can't and honestly they almost set themselves up for it. They whine and complain that they're being picked on (that goes over real well with their teammates). They overreact and have pissy fits. Those are the exact ones the rest of them try to rile up and start a fight with because they'll get the reaction. Our team is full of every ethnicity you can think of - Tongan, Samoan, African American, Vietnamese, White, Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese. They get racial and play that card but the kids laugh it off and are the best of friends. Like it or hate it, it's part of a teams makeup. They're siblings who beat the shtein out of each other but at the end of the day they're family.

there has not been a single even off the record quote from anyone in the dolphins organization defending martin
would anyone be surprised if this got really weird into the territory of thees guys being gay and having a relationship and incognito breaking it up and martin losing his mind?
i think its pretty clear martin is gay (like another former stanford guy kwame harris) and thats part of the reason he was known as the "big weird" on the team....i dont see the relationship part altho it wouldnt shock me.....if i had to guess i would say martin told someone perhaps incognito that he was going to come out (perhaps because another former stanford player jason collins was in the news for doing the same thing) and thats when the teasing began
Didn't the Rams cut him like 2 days after he got 2 personal foul penalties in the same game? I'm sure that was just the straw that broke the camels back and not the only reason they let him go, but as far as I know they cut him for football related reasons, not because of any rifts in the locker room.
This entire situation is what happens when grown men are treated like and allowed to act like kids their entire lives. Why did Martin walk out in the first place? Oh yeah, because a group of players invited him to sit at their table for lunch and then all stood up and walked away once he sat down. OMG that's soooooo funny! Child like actions get child like reactions and Martin throws a temper tantrum and walks out.
I don't think the issue is nearly as racial as it's being portrayed, but it's really the end result to spoiling the crap out of these idiots for a few decades now really starting to rear it's ugly head. And I think Martin might be bi-polar, or have some sort of mental/emotional imbalance or something.

And no.
Good point about the Stanford connection IGY. There's definitely something fishy to the entire story now.
I heard some clips of an interview Chris "Mad Dog" Russo did on his Sirius channel today with ex-Dolphin OL Lydon Murtha.
Murtha said that the $15k thing was overblown because this was Martin's cut for a trip that had been in the plans for months. Incognito and other vets had fronted the money to pay for the private jet, hotels and clubs and then each guy put his cut it. Martin decided he didn't want to go after everything had been booked and paid for.
He also said that Incognito and Martin were friends and that Richie looked out for him a lot. On the rookies paying for dinner he said that was an NFL rite of passage and that what guys paid was based on their contracts.
I didn't get to hear it all but there is definitely a groundswell of support for Incognito.

Colin Kaepernick: 81.7 Total QBR with Vernon Davis on field this season; 13.1 with Davis off field
QBR = Quarterback Rating?
yeah but its not the quarterback rating weve known our whole lives....its a new formula espn started up themslves a few years ago because they are self important douchebags
That, and they also needed more meaningless, cheap filler and a way to say Tony Romo is better than or worse than people think he is. I forget which way they went with that.
Yeah it's not the passer rating thing that goes up to 158.3. It's some ESPN formula that supposedly is top secret and involves thousands of factors, including GRIT
QuoteScoring: 0-100, from low to high. An average QB would be at 50.
Win Probability: All QB plays are scored based on how much they contribute to a win. By determining expected point totals for almost any situation, Total QBR is able to apply points to a quarterback based on every type of play he would be involved in.
Dividing Credit: Total QBR factors in such things as overthrows, underthrows, yards after the catch and more to accurately determine how much a QB contributes to each play.
Clutch Index: How critical a certain play is based on when it happens in a game is factored into the score.
QuoteThe league is creating a new weekly system of cross flexing, in which it can take an early game on FOX and flex it into the late-afternoon slot on CBS so more of the country can see it, or vice versa with FOX or CBS getting a late-afternoon game that had been scheduled for an early start in return.

OK. Begs the question: how many if you count those that would have been winning teams were it not for the loss(es) they suffered to the Lions?
thats the point you joke hipster

dio is a complete clown but your hate for him is something to behold
His obsessive bigotry towards hipsters surpasses anything I've seen from the other CF, at least from the few times I went there.
persians are smelly and awful but they cant help the fact that they are persians
where as being a hipster is entirely a choice. you actively decide to be an insufferable hipster douche and you own it. its a thing. its not something that should be accepted or celebrated.
BUT im the bad guy? yea ok. not in my america.
And that's when you know you've been in Texas too long.
Sounds like Bill O'Brien is about to be the Texans next HC
Leslie Frazier - gonna be gone
Jim Schwartz - gonna be gone
Joe Philbin - does he stay?
Rex Ryan - deserves to stay
Rat Face Shanny - gonna be gone
Mike Munchak - does he stay?
Rob Chudzinski - gonna be gone?

Tom Coughlin - does he stay?
Mike Smith - should be gone but will stay
Greg Schiano - does he stay?

Rex Ryan is coming back per Woody Johnson
the lions are leaning toward keeping schwartz which is just moronic
Yeah they last won on thanksgiving and they've been atrocious in Nov and Dec
And they had fourth qtr leads in 13/16 games this year
If they keep him it's bc of the money owed
The Lions are not known for making non-moronic personnel decisions. A smart GM somewhere else could probably trick them into trading Calvin.
ford's got plenty of cash on hand
pretty sure he could eat it
Quote@mortreport: Rob Chudzinski will be fired by the #Browns, per league sources.
Unreal. Joe Banner, take a bow...you've reaffirmed your seat as the league's top icehole.
So CLE has its eyes on McDaniels and O'Brien...
banner loves himself som bob
I mean we know how much of an icehole Banner is...but to can this guy after one year when you give him that shtein to work with? No RBs whatsoever...Bradon Weeden and Jason Campbell....jeez.
I can see Ray Horton being a hot DC candidate now...possibly to Dallas
Quote@MikeSilver: Another Browns player: "This organization is a joke."

Greg Schiano and GM Mark Domenik fired in Tampa
The only surprising thing about that is that it didn't happen sooner.

There's a rule about having to wear team gear for post game interviews, Tom Brady. I used to think it was stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does.
Rumors out there that Adam Gase and Todd Bowles have turned down Banner's request to interview
lol
James Franklin (Vandy) and Gus Malzahan on Joey B's radar in Cleveland
Bill O'Brien, head coach, Houston Texans
big news for J
Yeah really...I'm fired up! I can't wait for the news clips showing him riding around in a Tundra with Arian Foster
I think it is a good hire. I told the clowns at work that he's probably the best for them because he's fiery and knows how to work with QBs...two things they need after soft batch Kubiak and Pick Six Schaub
the belichek coaching tree normally produces winners
romeo crennel is a farging gambling god....dont you speak ill of his name
I wouldn't go against him at Russian Roulette, that's for sure.
Lovie Smith is the new Bucs HC
And he will likely be bringing in Jeff Tedford as his OC and Leslie Frazier as his DC
That is a good staff
3 out of the 4 playoff games are having trouble selling tickets...including the Packers. The Eagles are the lone exception...because Eagles fans are the farging shtein

Green Bay, as of Wednesday morning, was about 8,500 tickets short of a sellout, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Tom Silverstein. If the Packers don't sell out by 3:40 p.m. Thursday, the game will be blacked out on local TV from Green Bay to Milwaukee. That's almost inconceivable. The Press-Gazette said the Packers have sold out every regular-season game since 1959 (a playoff game in January of 1983, at the end of the strike-shortened season, did not). And yet they are having troubles selling out a playoff game a week after Aaron Rodgers returned from injury to beat the Bears for the NFC North title.
The Bengals produced a video with some players urging fans to buy playoff tickets, which you wouldn't think should be necessary for a NFL playoff game. Former Bengals receiver Chad Johnson said he would buy the unsold tickets, of which there are about 8,000 according to reports, but it's unclear if he was serious. As of Wednesday afternoon the Colts needed to sell 5,500 tickets for their game against the Chiefs before Thursday afternoon to become a sellout and avoid a local television blackout.
This makes me smile a bit - the fact that teams are having trouble selling out - between that and the fact that blackouts will be going away should be enough to force the owners into lowering ticket prices and concessions
ha ha, yeah right
$120 for a playoff game isn't outrageous considering what you pay for a regular season hockey game these days.
I mean, it's absurd but so is paying 30 bucks for a pound of jumbo lump crabmeat.
something isnt right about those packer prices....im pretty sure the nfl sets ticket prices for playoffs and they arent 102 and 313....those have to be suites or some sort of vip seats....altho 8500 seems like a high amount of those kinds of seats
It is actually Rod Marinelli who will be Lovie's DC in Tamp, not Frazier
Word is the Cowboys won't let him leave though
I'm sure that'll go over well.
Jeff Tripplette somehow will be allowed to ref a playoff game
Who is he blowing?
Calls... Blowing Calls
Bears signed Jay Cutler to a 7yr contract today
Cutler has grown up a bit over the last 2 years, so I can see why the Bears would want to commit to him going forward, but I still think they were stupid for playing him over McCown.

One day there might not be any more dumb rednecks in the NFL. It might take a hundred years, turning Texas to glass, and all the players to be replaced by robots, but it might happen.
On the plus side, I haven't seen any comments from Vikings fans defending Priefer or calling Kluwe a big gay homo. I'm sure if I checked their official board half the posts would be that because official boards for anything are awful. I'm seeing a few comparisons to Tebow, who was apparently murdered at some point for being super Christian in a league full of Christians, so farg everyone and everything.
I agree with Kluwe's views, but the fact remains that in his last year with the Vikings, he was a below average punter and one of the more expensive punters due to his veteran status. I would have replaced him, too. They get pretty much the same performance from the new guy at a fraction of the price.
But if he was dialing his punts down yardage-wise at the direction of his coach or coaches, his stats shouldn't be held against him.
I've long since felt there should be a law about separation of church and sport, and separation of politics, social causes etc. shouldn't be far behind. I wish players would just let it be farging football. This case might be a bit different if he was in fact personally attacked but it also comes across as him having an agenda against his old club that cut him.
