seanez and gordon are both FA's and are going to test the market. so taguchis option wont be picked up. see ya.
as much as i like burrell he's slow and prone to epic slumps. i'm glad he got that double in the 7th that would've been a triple for anybody else in the world so he didn't end his stay in a 0-13 skid in the world series he finally made it to. it would be nice if they could land holiday.
i'd like to see moyer back as the 4th and blanton seems suitable for the 5th spot. they still need a number 2 or 3. i'd really like them to go after lowe as he would be perfect for this park.
after the replacements for burrell and kendrick, there's obviously not much to do. marson definitely needs to see playing time, they need more production from the catcher spot even though chooch came through in the playoffs. if that means the coste fairytail is over.. then so be it.

New Phillies GM Amaro talks about '09
By Mike Jensen
Inquirer Staff Writer
The convertibles used at the Phillies' victory celebration were still in the tunnel below Citizens Bank Park yesterday morning, parked just outside the clubhouse before Ruben Amaro Jr. was introduced as the team's new senior vice president and general manager.
The cars were from the '08 party, but the questions Amaro fielded at his first news conference as GM were almost all about the '09 Phillies. He's not in charge of looking back. He had to get to the airport, to fly to the general managers' meetings in Dana Point, Calif.
He's looking for ballplayers, but also to replace himself from his old job, as well as director of player personnel Mike Arbuckle, who didn't get the GM job and resigned over the weekend.
Amaro acknowledged that there were lessons learned even from guys who weren't at Friday's parade, that team president David Montgomery and the front-office staff all saw how the team was built, that it wasn't always the big deals that made the biggest impact.
"The beauty of Pat Gillick is he's taken some risks and not all of them have worked out,"Amaro said. "Adam Eaton has not performed the way we wanted him to perform. The Garcia thing didn't work out particularly well for us" - last year's trade for pitcher Freddy Garcia - "but we've worked around those, and I think David's noticed that. He's seen the work Pat's done. I don't think David's afraid to take a risk. I do believe it will give me license to do just that."
As for the biggest issue facing him, Amaro said, "It continues to be pitching. I think it's important for us to solidify our rotation. We won with pitching this year. We were a team built on offense, but we tweaked it enough to get to the point where pitching became the thing that carried us. If you were to ask . . . if pitching would be the thing that would carry us, probably we wouldn't have been that sure. We probably would have to bang them to win. But we know that it's the same deal - you've got to have pitching to win this thing."
The subject of free agents came up quickly. Amaro said he'd had "contact" with the agents for free-agent pitchers Jamie Moyer and Scott Eyre. Of the biggest free-agent question mark, Pat Burrell, he said, "I think Pat has actually changed agents. I believe he is now being represented by Ed Hayes. We have plans to talk with Pat and Ed Hayes fairly shortly. . . . We're not sure if Burrell's going to be back. We're not sure if Jamie Moyer is going to be back, or Eyre, or [Rudy] Seanez. We have to assess which players we want to bring back, number one, and if we can't bring them back, then we'll do some tweaking. There are some voids to be filled, no question."
Someone asked about another free-agent outfielder, Manny Ramirez.
"Manny Ramirez is obviously the finest offensive player out there," Amaro said. "He's going to be extremely costly. I don't want to laugh off the situation, but I think there are other ways to fill the role. We don't know what's going to happen with Pat Burrell yet. We haven't made a decision whether he's going to be our leftfielder for next year and beyond. I can't really comment on Manny Ramirez at this time, just because we have to figure out what's going to happen with Pat."
Another big-ticket free agent, CC Sabathia, was brought up. Amaro said: "It's a consideration."
Then he made it clear it wasn't a top consideration.
"I like the way our rotation sets up right now, at the top of our rotation, especially with the emergence of Brett (Myers]," Amaro said, referring to Myers' second-half resurgence. "Brett made it turn the corner for us. You can't have enough pitching. But I have a feeling what CC's asking for may be a little north of where we want to go. We have to keep our core intact. Bringing a guy like CC in may be difficult, putting that percentage of his salary on our payroll."
He mentioned he hoped Kyle Kendrick would compete for a rotation spot, but said they couldn't count on it. "It may very well be that [Carlos] Carrasco or [J.A.] Happ or somebody [else] steps up."
Amaro made a point of saying that budget considerations can be over-discussed when it comes to this ballclub.
"We don't have a budget," he said. "What's funny, I'll tell you, people talk about and focus on the budget and how important that is. The fact of the matter is, we are not really normally given like a straight budget. We operate based on what our needs are and how we want to move forward."
Moving forward, that was the theme of the morning. By the time Amaro finished his session, even those '08 party convertibles were gone from the tunnel.

claimed off waivers by Toronto
Who?
I think you've seen the last of Coste, if Marson can hit, he'll assume the backup roll next season behind Rue—ez.
Outfield is anyone's guess. Obviously you have Victorino in CF, and Werth in RF, and Jenkins is going to get a chance to play based on his salary. Can Jenkins play LF?
Assuming Ramirez signs with NYY, I think they make a push for Burrell to come back. But I think Burrell is gone. I would go after Raul Ibanez to come in and replace him. You get 20 or so HRs from him, a lot of doubles and a respectable avg.
Bring in Rocco Baldelli to replace Taguci, and then maybe bring back Punto or Iguchi to round out your bench and you field a better team next season.
Rollins
Werth/Victorino
Utley
Howard
Werth/Victorino
Ibanez
Feliz
Ruiz
Three starters they should look at are Sabathia, Peavy (via trade) or Sheets...and with Hamels/xxxxx/Myers/Blanton/Happ-Carasco-Kendrick-combo and you have one of the deepest rotations in the NL.
No way is Peavy ever going to approve a trade to Philly. Less than zero chance, actually. His preference is to stay out west and play for a national league team. His family now makes San Diego home, so basically you're looking at either the Dodgers or maybe Arizona. S.F. is out because of the absurd amount of money they're paying Zito.
If those options are out then maybe he'd go to Atlanta (seeing as he's from Alabama) but that's about it.
You can forget Sabathia too because regardless of what the Phillies could offer him, one of the New York teams would offer a lot more, and the players union isn't going to let him take a sweetheart deal from Milwaukee either.
Sheets, on the other hand, might be a very nice option. He'll be cheaper than A.J. Burnett or Derek Lowe plus he's got better stuff than either one of them if (big IF) he's healthy.
My guess is they get another third starter, re-sign Moyer to a two year deal and then let Kendrick & Happ (or maybe Carrasco) fight it out for the fifth slot.
In terms of hitters, please everyone stop bring up Holliday's name. It ain't gonna happen if for no other reason than the minor league system doesn't have nearly enough talent to pry him away from the Rockies.
Burrell's gone, Ruiz should be gone, and in all honesty so should Feliz. I'd keep Feliz, though, because he's a great fielder and because he's not David Bell.
Don't forget Blanton, Rome. He's got to figure in there.

i can't seriously see blanton being our #2 going into the season. i'm not saying it can't or wont happen.. but i dont think that would end well. or start well.
If it did happen then the Phillies would obviously have gone the Holliday or Manny route. I can see that happening before them spending 125 million or more on Sabathia or trading the house for Jake Peavy.

Chase was robbed.
I totally agree with you on that one. Brandon Phillips?
Then again, Chase probably doesn't care. He plays for the world farging champs, and Phillips plays for the Reds.
Did Maddux really deserve another one?
chase has 6 more errors in 19 more games (110 more total chances then phillips).
irregardless chase is a gawd, and should be rewarded as such.
when chase utley wins a gold glove just stop giving out the award....the guy should get all the credit in the world for improving himself as much as he has but he is not a gglover
Bobby Abreu won a gold glove.
The award is, and always has been irrelevant.
Utley was actually the best defensive player of any position in baseball this year.
not surprised figy is a dumbass. just goes to show you that actually watching baseball and using you know, logic and reason, goes a long way in understanding baseball.
keith law supporting what I am saying.
QuoteKeith Law: I doubt there could be any worse call than not giving Utley a Gold Glove. He was only the best defensive player in the league last year, right? If GGs weren't already a complete and utter joke, unworthy of even a moment of our attention, then that's where they are now.
Ian (Bellingham, WA): Utley is turning thirty this offseason. You really think he can maintain production long enough to make the Hall?
SportsNation Keith Law: He's a good athlete and a plus-plus defensive player - those guys tend to age pretty well. Now, this is the part that might make my head explode, but the voters often look at stuff like Gold Gloves, so he needs to start winning some to boost his HoF chances. In my opinion, if a guy is the best player in baseball for a year or so and stays at/near that peak for a good 4-5 years, he's a HoF candidate. And Utley is the best player in baseball right now.
i really do wish all saber-nerds would die in a big bonfire
yeah they are top 5 worst humans on earth
you really didnt even need to be a dork to realize that utley was great defensively this year. i am talking just a basic mds level iq here. just watch the games.
no....you have to be a nerd
Sabermetrics are sickening.
Anyone who watches games knows that, while Utley's defense has improved greatly, he's still a hacker. Not Ryan Howard bad, but not exactly reliable.
i think he's fine...but i wouldn't watch him and say he's GG caliber

no.
his range and aptitude with the glove allow him to make more plays on balls that most second baseman could not. errors are meaningless and anyone with a room temperature IQ should know why.
Howard is horrible because he is a statue and cant throw the ball.

What Sunny posted.
who cares the phils are gonna get matt holliday. happy hollidays. lol.
ha...dope
he'd be a one-year rental because of Boras but they'd get two draft picks when he leaves (plus two more when Burrell leaves)
yeah, i dont like them giving up carrasco and marson for a 1 yr rental. i realize that's what it would take, but i wouldn't pull the trigger unless a contract extention can be worked out, which shouldn't be too hard being as where they play and what they accomplished.
id give up corrasco, not marson.
weve got a 1-2 year window to win more titles so why the farg not.
yep...plus they just won one...everything else is gravy...go for one or two more and then suck for ten years who the hell cares
exactly. chances are they wont sign choke long term and maybe not even cole, so its time to go balls out. even blocking the mets for the next 2-3 years from winning the nl east would be worth it in my view.
If they don't sign Cole to a long-term deal, it better be because his arm falls off or something.

I hope not. I'd rather keep Carrasco and Marson.
if they can get an extension for holliday its an absolutely no brainer trade...carrasco is a #3 at best and marson while looking good isnt an elite prospect...altho hes at a very hard to find good players position...so you have to be careful there
even if you cant extend holliday i wouldnt hate the trade but i completely see not wanting to do it
chance are this is rosenh errrr boras putting out his own rumors anyway
corrasco is really overrated. hes not a top of the rotation guy and id give him away easy.
jason donald is the guy that needs to hang around. he can take over ss when jimmys contract is up/can probably handle third for the time being.
marson i think is the real deal at catcher, and those dont come around everyday.
what do you foks know about Kyle Drabek? He's out here for the Hawaii Winter League. I 'd love to go watch him pitch but they never give the pitching matchups.
three other phils prospects are here as well:
Dominic Brown 16 OF 6-6 205 L/L Philadelphia Phillies
Chris Kissock 10 P 6-4 188 R/R Philadelphia Phillies
Michael Taylor 34 OF 6-6 255 R/R Philadelphia Phillies

I farging loved Glenn Wilson. I was watching on PRISM when he pitched and struck a guy out.
i'm glad they broke the drought and all, and if this was just thrown together like the 93 team then i wouldn't expect much in the future. the fact is though they have a nice core of talent here that they can probably keep together for a few years so i'd like them to at least give it a go at one more. at the very least though keep the division away from the farging mets for the time being. to do that they need to replace burrells bat or get another pitcher. i dont think we can expect moyer to duplicate the same year, nor can we hope a starter is going to develop in spring training between kendrick, carassco and company. basically you can't lose rowand and burrell in back to back years and not replace the production in the lineup, and if you dont address their loss you have to get better in another area.

PHILADELPHIA -- Moving quickly to fill one of two coaching vacancies, the Phillies announced the addition of Sam Perlozzo to the team's staff on Thursday.
Perlozzo hasn't been assigned a specific coaching position from among third-base coach or bench coach, where Steve Smith (dismissed) and Jimy Williams (declined to return), respectively, worked for the past two seasons.
Regardless, the former infielder will handle infield instruction. Perlozzo spent last season as Seattle's third-base coach after 12 years with Baltimore as a third-base coach (1996-2000), bench coach (2001-05) and manager (2005-07). Before landing with the Orioles, Perlozzo coached third for the Mariners (1993-95), the Reds (1990-92) and the Mets (1987-89).
"I've known Sammy for a long time and couldn't be happier to add someone with his experience to our coaching staff," manager Charlie Manuel said in a statement.
Perlozzo was a five-time fielding champion in nine Minor League seasons, as well as for the Yakult Swallows in Japan in 1980, the same season Manuel hit 48 home runs for the Kintetsu Buffaloes.
Perlozzo's role depends on who fills the other coaching vacancy. That could be someone else with managerial experience. Former big league skippers Jim Tracy, Grady Little and Terry Collins have emerged as candidates, according to a person familiar with the Phillies' thinking.
thats a nice hire
That hire adds at least another 3-4 regular season wins if Perlozzo coaches third base.

QuoteA baseball source said last night that Amaro will hire Scott Proefrock, Baltimore's director of baseball administration, as an assistant general manager. An announcement could come today.
Proefrock joins Benny Looper and Chuck Lamar, whom Amaro already has named assistant general managers. Proefrock will assume the role Amaro held under former general managers Ed Wade and Pat Gillick, which was handling negotiations for big-league contracts and the general make up of the big-league roster. Proefrock was the assistant general manager for Tampa Bay from 1998-2005, when Lamar served as Tampa Bay's GM. He also worked with Lamar with the Atlanta Braves from 1991-95.
so the Phils now have
both guys responsible for the Wade Boggs/Fred McGriff/Jose Canseco/Vinny Castilla/Greg Vaughn last-place mess :yay
(but they also drafted Upton, Baldelli and Josh Hamilton, so there's that)
"Someone who doesn't take his team to the playoffs doesn't deserve to win the MVP"- Albert Pujols after Ryan Howard won in '06
Think Howard called to rub it in a little?
The phillies saved $2M in payroll for next year with Pujols getting the MVP. (this isn't whining, fyi...Pujols deserved it)
Yeah, the .357 average is a clincher. I'd still hoped Howard could take it, but I'll take your word for it about the $2m and say the team is better off this way.
So, Howard goes back for arbitration this year, then?
yeah, and next year, as long as howard doesn't actually sign any offer from the phillies.
Which is why Howard turned down the $1M after his rookie year, it kept his arbitration eligibility to make less at the time.
Utley/Rollins took the entensions before they hit arbitration.

thats awesome, the fact that you will get Harry makes it worth it. I thought they'd stick with just the Fox crew.
Yes, please.
what are the Phillies putting out? Just a usual video yearbook?
yeah with "extensive" coverage of the postseason. comes out the 24th... you can purchase tickets to the redcarpet for $25 bucks which includes a copy of the dvd.. or 10 bucks to see the first viewings at a few seperate locations which doesn't include a dvd.

The Phils are done with CW57, moving back to PHL17 for the next 3 years
expect them to toss the sixers and flyers soon enough.
the cw is going after the 18-34 female crowd and only that. doesnt make sense for their affiliate in the 4th largest market air sports.
plus ch 17 has nothing and probably over-spent to get the phils.
So...ultey is expected to miss 4 to 6 months.

Season over.
his hip was farged up since June, and the guy played thru it, and they won a fargING WORLD SERIES, when does that EVER happen to a philly team.
chances are he'll return right around the all star break. (edit) with the world baseball classic delaying the start of the season anyway...his return is likely sooner than that)
Keep/bring back Iguchi, or have Jason Donald as your 2B until he returns. Problem solved.
who give a shtein they won a world series
Feliz needs back surgery too
whatever.
eric bruntlett can play 2nd base for 162 games and i couldnt get mad.
As long as he still hasn't shaven.
There was something written earlier about Utley needing hip surgery, but like igy said...wtf cares...they won the Series.

Oh, goodie. It's not like the Phillies need prospects with five-tool potential cluttering up the system.
Idiots.
five tools but he put a ball into play twice during his time with the Phils. He's fast and a good defensive outfielder, but he sucks offensively...
He's raw offensively, Ed. And six at-bats isn't exactly whopper of a sample size either.

wouldn that be four tools then?
since he didn't hit for power OR average, I guess it's only 3
and yeah, 6 ABs in the majors isn't a huge sample size (4 Ks, a groundout and a flyout), but he struck out a ton in the minors too
2008 = 130 K in 426 AB
2007 = 173 K in 571 AB
2006 = 160 K in 546 AB
2005 = 106 K in 375 AB
2004 = 54 K in 183 AB

cant risk having to pay burrell 15+ mil this year...it was a no brainer not offering him

I agree. I really wonder if Burrell would have accepted arbitration but probably the right move.
probably wouldnt have since he can get a multi year from an AL team but the fact that he loves philly so much you couldnt take the chance....with all the arby guys they have they couldnt risk giving that big a chunk to burrell
what's wrong with having Burrell at one year at 15? they aren't going to find better for LF next year.
because it would stop them from signing a pitcher or two which is much more important
they cant pay burrell and howard over 30+ mil for next year with victorino king werth blanton durbin all arby eligible...they would be grossly over budget and it would essentially end their offseason
and i also disagree that they cant get an outfielder better than him next year...in fact it would be semi difficult to not get one better than burrell
no way do they put anything out there next year that puts up his offensive numbers
ibanez would...and who knows whod be available in a trade...30 and 80 or 25 and 75 in that park isnt difficult to do

The pitcher is definitely needed more, especially with Moyer gone. Bring on Adam Dunn :paranoid

i know most people hated pannachio but i really miss him...not only was he a great writer but he was the only writer who took the flyers to task
Pannachio was a very good writer who had no problem asking the tough questions. From reading on another site, he was having some personal issues that was interfering with his job. He's back though lately with some great articles, and solid info.

Hamels
Lowe
Myers
Moyer
Blanton
That's a scary rotation right there.
replace happ with moyer and you've got the actual rotation if they sign lowe
Works either way. Moyer probably wouldn't last the season anyway so Happ would be the natural fit especially since he's a lefty.
I wouldn't mind seeing Carrasco blow everyone's minds out of spring training and win a spot in the rotation.
hell probably have a chance, but most likely they are slotting him to replace blanton in 2010 when his contract is up
Lowe is the best fit for CBP. I still wish they'd bring back the old man for one more season, though.
Olney doesn't think the Phils have made an offer. Just the agent trying to stir up some action. Damn. :boom
they cant come close to affording lowe
They can if they trade Myers.
Well, then they would need yet another starter.
Hamels
Lowe
Moyer
Blanton
Happ
Carrasco
Kendrick

Did they re-sign Moyer?
Latest rumor from the winter meetings has the Phillies possibly getting involved in a 3- or 4-way trade with the Cubs, Padres and Orioles. The Cubs would get Peavy and they're not sure how the Phils would be involved, but some of the names mentioned were Jason Marquis or Mark DeRosa to the Phils with JA Happ going to the Padres... :-\
No to that.
Marquis is a bad fit for Philly, IMO.

QuotePhillies eye trade for Cubs' DeRosa
The multi-team deal, which may include J.A. Happ, could help Chicago land Padres ace Jake Peavy.
By Jim Salisbury
Inquirer Staff Writer
LAS VEGAS - Phillies officials were working on a complex trade late last night that could bring them a player who would provide insurance for second baseman Chase Utley and a righthanded bat in left field.
The player is Mark DeRosa and if his name sounds familiar, it should. He once quarterbacked the football team at Penn.
In a proposed multi-team trade, DeRosa would go from the Chicago Cubs to the Phillies. The Phillies would send the Cubs a prospect or two, which in turn could be sent to San Diego in a package for pitcher Jake Peavy. Pitcher J.A. Happ is one of the prospects the Phils could part with.
There were rumblings that the proposed deal could include a fourth team, most likely the Baltimore Orioles.
"Three teams, possible," a Phillies source said late last night. "Four, doubtful."
DeRosa, who turns 34 in February, hit .285 with 21 homers and 87 RBIs in 149 games for the Cubs last season. He played six positions during the season, including 95 games at second base and 27 in left field. DeRosa is signed for 2009 at a reasonable $5.5 million.
In addition to DeRosa, the Phils still had free-agent leftfielder Raul Ibanez in their sights as the winter meetings opened yesterday.
The Phils need to add a leftfielder to take the place of free agent Pat Burrell, who is unlikely to be re-signed.
In a perfect world, the Phils would add a righthanded-hitting outfielder because the middle of their order already features two lefthanded bats in Utley and Ryan Howard.
However, a person with knowledge of the Phillies' thinking said the team is open to adding a lefthanded hitter such as Ibanez.
Ibanez hit .305 (60 for 197) against lefthanded pitching while playing for the Seattle Mariners last season. Overall, he hit .293 with 23 homers and 110 RBIs while playing in all 162 games.
Ibanez, 36, has spent 10 of his 13 major-league seasons with the Mariners, and is a favorite of former Mariners and Phillies general manager Pat Gillick. Gillick stepped down as Phillies GM after the World Series but remains a consultant with the team and is present at these meetings.
New Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. would not talk about specific targets, but Ibanez's agent, Seth Levinson, confirmed that the Phils are involved with his client. Ibanez, who has averaged 112 RBIs over the last three seasons, is likely to be seeking a multiyear deal worth $10 million to $12 million per season.
The Cubs and New York Mets are interested in Ibanez, but the Mets have moved him to the back burner as they pursue, as one team official said, "pitching, pitching, pitching."
If the Phils don't get DeRosa or Ibanez, they may go after free agent Juan Rivera, a righthanded hitter who played for the Angels in 2008, and use him as part of a platoon with Greg Dobbs.
The Minnesota Twins could trade outfielder Delmon Young, and the Phillies have checked him out. Phils officials say Young is far down their list of possibilities.
"We're trying to be aggressive in improving our club so we can compete for a World Series title again," Amaro said.
In addition to adding a leftfielder, the Phils would like to add a starting pitcher, a need that could be filled by re-signing Jamie Moyer. They would also like to add a relief pitcher and possibly a utility infielder to provide some depth while Utley recovers from hip surgery. That depth could be provided by DeRosa if the three-way trade goes down.
As for Moyer, Amaro said: "There is nothing new. We are in a holding pattern."
The Phils had thought that signing the 46-year-old lefty would be easy, but negotiations have slowed in recent weeks. It appears that Moyer would like a second year guaranteed, while the Phillies favor a one-year contract with an option.
Amaro said the length of the Moyer negotiations has led the Phils to pursue other pitchers. They've spoken with Derek Lowe's representatives, and Amaro would not rule out bringing back free-agent lefthander Randy Wolf.
"We want Jamie back," Amaro said. "But if we have a deal in place to bring in a pitcher, we won't delay because Jamie has not signed a deal."
The Phils are discussing a contract extension for 2011 with manager Charlie Manuel. Amaro would not discuss specifics, but he said: "We want Charlie to be our manager for years to come."
Amaro echoed comments he made last week, saying the team has not had any substantive negotiations with Burrell, who made $14 million last season and is seeking a multiyear deal. The market for Burrell appears to be very weak right now, and it probably won't pick up until top free-agent sluggers Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez find landing spots.
An American League official, speaking anonymously, said that Burrell is one of several second-tier free agents who could be adversely affected by the poor economy.
Why not just go after Peavy? Helping the Cubs get him would be assinine, imagine trying to beat them when they march out Zambrano, Harden, Peavy, Lilly and Dempster. farg that. And how the hell are the bankrupt Cubs going to take on an $80 million contract?
I agree. Plus I would rather hold on to Happ because we need the pitching. Go with a Dobbs/Juan Rivera rotation. Jenkins could also be worked in there.
i love the move...derosa would be a perfect replacement for first utley and then for burrell...and hes cheap...this will allow them to then concentrate on upgrading moyers spot in the rotation because it will allow them to spend some real coin on the staff
Derosa for Happ is fine but if a guy like Peavy is out there you try to get him, you don't help another playoff team in the NL with a deeper rotation acquire him. Especially one that's going bankrupt. The Phils had to bank off the WS and Peavy isn't costing them that much more than Moyer would per year.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

but if an inept organization like the phillies can win, then so can the cubs.
so no, lets not help give them a rotation of zambrano, harden, peavy and dempster.

like ja happ is the key to the cubs getting peavy
you make your team the best it can be and dont worry about other teams...especially ones not even in your division
de rosa is solid, id rather have raul ibanez and happ than de rosa and kendrick.
basically de rosa is replaceable amongst a million other random outfielders. the thing he really has going for him is his ability to play pretty much everywhere outside of pitcher or catcher. that helps, but utley will be back in late april/early may and he dont need no days off. neither does jimmy. and the dobbs/feliz platoon is fine. do really you need a LF and ibanez can do that.
Happ/Kendrick is almost as much fun an argument as Lohse/Kendrick.

i was there, freaking amazing game
kendrick is done....he never pitches for this team again...and trying to paint it black n white by saying its either kendrick and de rosa or happ and ibanez is silly and wrong....ibanez would be a huge mistake...they cant put another lefty in the lineup...plus he cant play second base and thats the reason you get de rosa as insurance for utley
it would be de rosa and whoever else they signed or traded for this off season...other than his outstanding ability to fit in a myriad of different spots the biggest reason to get de rosa is because hes so cheap...if they dont sign moyer and even if they do this will give them an opportunity to go out and aquire a pretty good pitcher if they so chose
Not offering Burrell arbitration makes no sense if they are going to go out there and downgrade to Ibanez while giving him a multi year deal at the very least $10 million per.
I want to say decisively that we are not getting Ibanez because of this, but this whole scenario sounds just dumb and infuriating enough for Amaro to do it.
theres not even a small chance they go after much less get ibanez....any ibanez to phillies talk is a plant either by his agent to drum up competitive interest in his client or by amaro to make the phillies appear more aggresive than they actually are
The ibanez talk is a total smokescreen. no doubt about it. But you don't offer Burrell arbitration for one reason...the fear that he might have accepted it. The only way the phils should bring back Pat is if it is at a discount. They have some big money to hand out over the next 2 or 3 years and they have their own self imposed budget. You don't waste money on Burrell. You can get his numbers from any number of available outfielders.
Although i am as against Ibanez for a 2 year deal as some are... as long as you ditch Jenkins in the meantime.
DeRosa would be a good fit.
I still think they're going to sign Baldelli to take over the roll Taguchi was supposed to fill last year.
Isn't Baldelli some sort of sleepy cripple?
Yes, but he's good enough to come in for 2 innings every other night or pinch hit. He would fit into the role So Taguchi was used this year.
But you hate baseball.
I'm not sure why you're so bitter about my dislike of baseball. It's still a competition of sorts which makes it more tolerable than most things. But compared to actual contact sports it's boring as shtein.
Let me explain in small words. Baseball is boring, but I follow it. I rarely, if ever watch games because they are boring. I prefer hockey or football or just about any other real sport to baseball, but I still know the game well enough to chime in every now and then.
So you should probably settle down. Freakshow.
I know, right?
I'm cook with DeRosa, he would be perfect for this team. I am not sold on Ibanez though. Maybe on a 1yr deal with an option.
I saw today that the Cubs ownership problems and the questions related to payroll could derail the deal.
Werth destroys lhp. you hit him 5 and ibanez 6.

Quote• The Phillies and manager Charlie Manuel continue to work toward a three-year extension, as first reported this week by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
"We're still working on it," Manuel's agent, Pat Rooney, told ESPN.com. "They want to do something. So we'll see what they do."
Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. wouldn't address the negotiations directly, saying: "I don't really want to discuss his status. All I can tell you is, we want Charlie to be our manager for years to come."
• Baseball people who have spoken with the Phillies say that, while the Phillies have interest in acquiring Mark DeRosa as part of the multiteam Jake Peavy extravaganza, they have no plans to tread water to see if that deal goes down.
They continue to express interest in free agent Raul Ibanez. And one friend of Ibanez's said the outfielder told him the Phillies are his first choice.
• Meanwhile, the Cubs wouldn't be interested in trading DeRosa unless they first acquired a left-handed-hitting outfielder, who, ironically, might also turn out to be Ibanez. The Cubs are trying to balance their lineup. So adding a left-handed hitter in the outfield and installing left-handed-hitting Mike Fontenot at second base in place of DeRosa would accomplish that.
Manuel was extended
Some interesting stuff from the Daily News:
QuoteIn a variation on that rumor that surfaced late last night, the Phillies would get righthander Jason Marquis from the Cubs and righthanded-hitting outfielder Scott Hairston from San Diego. The Phillies get a platoon leftfielder in Hairston and an innings-eating fifth starter in Marquis. And since Marquis is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $9.875 million in 2009, that would still seem to leave the door open to re-sign Jamie Moyer.
Amaro did not rule out trying to sign righthander Derek Lowe, despite reports he eventually will get $80 million over 5 years. "We like Derek Lowe. Our people like Derek Lowe. But he's not the only pitcher we're looking at," he said.
Two other Phillies-related rumors: One is that the team is looking into the possibility of signing free-agent reliever Brandon Lyon (3-5, 4.70 with 75 hits allowed in 59 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks). The other is that they have had discussions with free-agent infielder Nick Punto, which presumably would take them out of the market for DeRosa.
Phillers
The Phillies apparently have some cursory interest in free-agent reliever Russ Springer . . . An Internet report yesterday suggested the Phillies might get outfielder Ryan Ludwick from the Cardinals for a top reliever, presumably righthander Ryan Madson. Sources said that's unlikely, pointing out that moving Ludwick would leave the Cardinals with an all-lefthanded-hitting outfield and probably would want more for a .299-37-113 hitter. *

that doesnt make any sense but its an irrelevant move
Paulino wanted off the Pirates and Jaramillo was managed by the current Pirates manager in AAA.
Jaramillo wasn't good enough to be Ruiz's backup and they wanted Marson to get a full season at LV

QuoteThe Phillies are close to signing free-agent right-hander Chan Ho Park, according to Yahoo Sports.
The club has not confirmed or announced anything regarding Park.
Park, 35, went 4-4 with a 3.40 ERA over 95 2/3 innings in 2008, making five starts among his 54 appearances for the Dodgers.
The Phillies are expected to look at him as a starter and the deal likely will be for one year.
And speaking of disasters, the deal for DeRosa is now rumored to include JASON DONALD and Happ or Carrasco (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081210&content_id=3712363&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi). WTF?!?
Peavy to Cubs deal is DEAD. Thankfully.
After considering bringing back Nick Punto, he re-signed with the Twins for 2/$8.5M. wow.

Peavy has the Phillies on his no trade list.
Ibanez is as good as you were going to get in left unless you wanted Jenkins to start everyday. He's as consistent as you get hitting .290 with 20 HRs every year. He actually hit lefties well last season (.305), though that's pretty high above his career average. I think he was about the best possible option as long as his play doesn't drop off with age too considerably.
if they still go out and improve their rotation then the move is ok...if they sign hamels long term then i can live with this
but if they dont do either of those things and this move is essentially their offseason then its horrible

I agree that locking Hamels up long-term and adding another pitcher is a priority, but I don't look at it in a vacuum.
They needed a new LF. Burrell wasn't coming back. At that point Ibanez is just as good as anyone not named Manny on the market if his age doesn't catch up to him and the $ given to him doesn't prevent them signing pitching, which I agree, is the real concern here.

I agree.
Whether you like it or not, the phils opperate on a budget. This is the best move they could have made which allows them the flexibility to make another move...which should be to for a starting pitcher. Burrell would have costed too much, yeah he's 4 years younger, but he plays like a 44 year old. It's time to move on.
You don't have to do anything with Hamels if you don't want to. He'll get his money in arbitration. And who cares if he whines. He bitched about it last season and he only won the NLCS and WS MVPs. Use the extra money this year to get another pitcher (Lowe, as long as those asinine demands come down)
yeah, i really want Lowe, i think he makes them the favorites again in the NL. but i don't think he'll end up coming here.
i could care less about the age thing...they won a world series which gives them at least 5-10 years of losing and i really wouldnt get to upset....EXCEPT for the mets thing...
the hamels shtein talking yesterday has given me new phillies life...in general ill want the mets to lose more than ill want the phils to win next year but more than anything in sports this coming year i want the phillies to beat that ny ass everytime...those games will be almost as big to me as this past years playoffs and definitely bigger than any 09 playoff game they might be in
the fact that both cities daily news on december 12 have phillies/mets on their back pages is so farging awesome...their games next year are going to be epic
I don't know that Burrell would have cost that much more, reports indicate he isn't getting the offers on the f/a market he thought he would.
Ibanez Pros:
Better clutch hitter
slight upgrade defensively
slightly faster than Burrell
doesn't go into month long slumps
Cons:
Has less power
is a lefty (yeah I know what his #s are against lefties)
is older
had to sacrifice a 1st round pick to sign him
Burrell destroyed the Mets
I'm all for upgrading the team if it means sacrificing the future because the Phils are obviously able to win now, but there are/were better options. In a perfect world I'd have re-signed Rowand last offseason and the outfield would have been already set.
They wind up re-signing Moyer - which I believe they will - they aren't upgrading the starting pitching. Case closed.
Quotein general ill want the mets to lose more than ill want the phils to win next year
That's just retarded.
I do not like giving Ibanez 30M. The guy is about to turn 37.
Should have waited Burrell out, maybe gotten him on a 2yr deal or a 3yr deal cheaper than 30M and used the Ibanez cash to sign Lowe.
Assuming Manny was never a consideration, the other LF available was the white Choke Dawg, and he wouldn't have cost a draft pick. The strikeouts probably scared Amaro away though...
BTW, Ibanez isn't exactly an upgrade in the outfield:

Zolecki:
QuoteIbanez, 36, hit .293 with 23 home runs and 110 RBIs last season for the Seattle Mariners. He has 338 RBIs over the past three seasons, which ranks 12th in baseball. Interestingly, Ryan Howard ranks first (431) and Chase Utley ranks 20th (309), which means the Phillies have three of the top 20 RBI-men over the past three years in their lineup. (Only three outfielders -- Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday -- have more RBIs than Ibanez in that span.) Burrell ranked 32nd in that category with 278 RBIs. Of course, Burrell also hit righthanded, which is important to Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. He strives for balance in his lineup, but it looks like Manuel will have lefthanded hitters in his Nos. 3, 4 and 5 slots.
Here's another thing to consider when looking at Ibanez's numbers: He played half his games in Safeco Field. According to The Bill James Handbook 2009, Safeco Field had a 92 runs index from 2006-08, which ranked 12th out of 14 ballparks in the American League. Citizens Bank Park had a 104 runs index from 2006-08, which ranked fifth out of 16 ballparks in the National League.
A 100 index means the park is neutral to hitters and pitchers. An index higher than 100 favors hitters and an index less than 100 favors pitchers. Ibanez put up those numbers in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. He could find things a bit better in Philly.

mets are slowly creeping up on the red sox and taterskins as my most hated things in life
Ibanez is a nice pickup, I like it. I'll miss Burrell though.
Now they gotta go after Lowe since Burnett is going to NY.
QuoteRaul Ibanez will turn 37 during the first year of his three-year deal with the Phillies and finish it at the age of 39. He's very similar to the player he's replacing, Pat Burrell. But Ibanez is four years older, is a far worse defensive player, and -- outside of a blip in 2008 -- does not hit left-handed pitching. (His OPS against left-handers was .650 in 2007 and .661 in 2006.)
If the Phillies were willing to give this contract to Ibanez, they should have offered it to Burrell, who at least is less likely to fall off a cliff offensively and would have kept the Phillies' lineup a little more balanced. The difference in 2009 will be slight, but by 2011 there's a good chance Ibanez will just be an albatross, both financially and defensively.
The most absurd part of this signing is the fact that the Phillies decided not to offer arbitration to Burrell, who also had a Type A designation, meaning that the Phils could have either brought him back on a one-year deal or received two high draft picks if he signed elsewhere. If Burrell had accepted (the deadline was earlier this week), the Phillies would have had Burrell on every general manager's favorite Christmas gift, a one-year contract, which limits the team's downside risk and may even provide a boost by putting the player into another walk year. If Burrell had not accepted, which seems likely for a number of reasons, the Phillies would have been set up to receive two draft picks, a compensatory pick and probably a late first-rounder or early second-rounder. It's a win either way, so signing a very similar player to a three-year contract without getting the picks for Burrell is plain ol' mismanagement, and to make matters worse, the move costs the Phillies their own first-round draft pick. We're talking about the scouting staff that drafted top prospects Michael Taylor, Dominic Brown, Jason Donald and Lou Marson in the last few years, as well as Adrian Cardenas and Josh Outman, who were both used to land Joe Blanton in a midseason trade. The goal should be to give the scouting department more picks, not fewer, unless the move makes the big-league club better, which the Burrell-for-Ibanez tradeoff does not.
In Ruben we trust.
just a heads up for xmas shopping or whatever: that 8-dvd world series set is only $55 at Best Buy, compared to $70 at Modells and a few other places
I have the final 3 1/2 innings and the following Baseball Tonight on my DVR fo' free.
The Phillies got tired of dealing with Burrell's prolonged slumps and defensive shortcomings. Why people are up in arms over him being shown the door is curious to say the least. Ibanez, on the other hand, I think this is a good signing and I'm fine with it. I'm a little concerned at the fact that they're going to be extremely top-heavy with lefties next year, though.
I doubt many people have a problem with the Ibanez signing, overall I think his consistency will make the Phils lineup that much better. The problem is they could have offered Burrell - a player that's 5 years younger - arbitration, that locks up LF for at least 1 year and if signs with another club they're compensated. The core of this current team was built through the draft, so the real question is would you have rather had the right handed hitting 31 year old Burrell at 1 year $14 million and keep your 1st round pick or a left handed hitting 37 year old Ibanez at 3 years-$31.5 million and sacrificing your 1st pick. It's not so much the signing I'm upset with it's that there were better alternatives.
Seamheads seem to be the ones who are crushed over Burrell leaving. See the Billy Beane's of the world for proof of that.
As for Burrell, I have no problem seeing him depart. I would have liked for them to pick up a guy that hits from the right with Ibanez's production but they're just not out there.
As for the arbitration thing, I think the Phillies are scared shteinless of it after the Polanco fiasco. I think they offered Pat the 2 year/20 million dollar deal that was leaked after the World Series, he turned it down, and the moment he did they moved on. I agree that arbitration was likely the better way to go but I can't be all that upset about them picking up a guy who's hit 20+ homers and driven in 100+ RBI's in each of the past three seasons.
Not that I am a huge Burrell fan, but this move is curious for a few reasons:
1. It makes the line-up that much more lefty-dominated, especially in the middle with Utley-Howard-Ibanez.
2. Ibanez is my age. Too damn old to commit that much money for a team supposedly on a budget.
3. Ibanez may be a worse defensive outfielder than Burrell.
Ibanez would bat 6th. Werth 5th.

Quote"I was a little worried about the Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Phillies, which is hitter-friendly," he said. "But as they considered me a starter, I signed with Philadelphia."
Cole Hamels, Brett Myers and Joe Blanton will fill three spots in the rotation. If Jamie Moyer re-signs, that would leave Park to compete with J.A. Happ, Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco for the fifth spot.
So basically it's insurance in case they don't get Lowe or Moyer, because we all know Happ is in line for the 5th spot.
But I do like Park out of the bullpen, seeing ass Durbin's mediocre career performance will most likely resurface next year.
Apparently they signed Moyer to a two year deal. Details coming up a little later per WIP.

Jim Rome / 12-18-2008
Spring training is still a couple of months away, but the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets are already trading sniper fire. All-world lefty Cole Hamels got it started last week, calling the Mets 'choke artists' for the way they threw up on themselves at the end of the last two seasons.
Mets pitcher John Maine didn't like being called a choker and fired back, quote: "I don't care, but I just don't get it. At the end of the year, they won the World Series. Congratulations! Let's focus on the things they accomplished. Don't worry about what's going on here in New York. I mean, I don't get it."
What's not to get, John? An interviewer asked him if he thought you were 'choke artists', and he said yes...and he's right. Dead on. The gospel truth. Giving back 7 games with 17 to play and then coming from ahead to tank again the following September doesn't make you clutch. You flamed miserably two years in a row when it mattered most and you need to wear that.
Hamels, on the other hand shows up like a combination of Sandy Koufax and Steve Carlton, put his team on his back and leads them to their first world title in many years. He can he say whatever he wants...and he's right to say you're 'choke artists'. Back away from Cole Hamels...he owns you, he owns a ring and what he said was true.
Not really a fan of Jim Rome but this shtein is funny.

I'm not so upset Burrell's leaving as I am at Amaro jumping the gun, overpaying an older right Ibanez while sacrificing our #1 pick. The backbone of the team was built through the draft so I'm sure how anyone could say "who cares about our first round pick"

well we all knew for a while now that no 2 year deal was going to happen
if Burrell had accepted arbitration in 09 and ended up getting $15-$16 million, the same situation would exist in 2010. The Phillies would then have to decide on offering Burrell arbitration again. If they decide not to, it is likely that a comparable replacement will cost more than $15 million for the next 2 years
they can make up that 1st rd choice they lost with the $5 million it would of cost to keep Burrell and go above slot to sign some young players. you can argue it either way as being a good or a bad move based off your stance on Ibanez

My understanding from the article is that the arbitration hearing was already held (during the World Series), and this is the final decision, barring some kind of litigation.
Here's the philly.com article. (http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20090105_Phils_Romero_facing_50-game_ban.html)

That story is only Romero's side, but if that's the whole truth and nothing but the truth, a 50-day suspension is farging ridiculous and does absolutely nothing for the integrity of the game. The guy checked out the OTC supplement as much anyone would reasonably expect he could, and the team, union, and league didn't tell him there was a problem with it. It's hard to imagine it had anything more than a marginal effect on his performance, and he stopped using it as soon as he was told there was a problem.
He has a right to be pissed.

Romero and the players association should sue the living shtein out of the MLB. What a travesty.
Also, for anyone who wants to talk shtein:
QuoteThat same day, Oct. 1, Romero was tested again. The results were negative. So for the NLDS, NLCS and World Series, the supplement was no longer in his system.

If they had signed him to a 2 year deal they wouldn't have to worry about LF till 2010 so I'm not sure what your point is, not to mention they have prospects that could be MLB ready in 2 years.
'we' did? I didn't know you and Ruben were that tight. According to Burrell:
QuoteThere were reports earlier in the season that Burrell had turned down a 2-year, $22 million offer that would have kept him in red pinstripes. He addressed the issue reluctantly.
"This is all I'm going to say about it: Early in the season there were preliminary discussions about the possibility of an extension. And the truth of it is, it never got to be more than that. It just never did," he said. "The rest of the season went on and that was the end of the preliminary discussions. To be honest, nothing specific was ever talked about. Nothing official was offered. There were just some preliminary talks."
Then there were no talks at all. Now Burrell is starting over, wondering what the future holds.
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...appointed.html
That's right, they didn't want him back - which is fine - but Amaro jumped the gun signing Ibanez. I would have taken a chance on Milton Bradley who's better than the both of them at a similar price.
and is there any doubt that Manny ain't gettin anywhere close to the deal he thinks he is?
Romero should sue the pants off MLB and he should include that bumbling idiot Selig in his lawsuit.
Just read through the article, the stuff he used (6 OXO) is the same stuff my brother used playing High School football this past year.

Phillies's Amaro supports MLB policy — and J.C. Romero
By Jim Salisbury
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Phillies reliever J.C. Romero was suspended Tuesday for 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for a banned substance.
Romero told The Inquirer Monday that he used a supplement bought at a GNC store in Cherry Hill and claimed he should not have been suspended because it was unclear the product contained illegal substances.
In a conference call with reporters, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr., said, "It's an unfortunate situation where mistakes were made. We care about JC. We also staunchly support Major League Baseball's policies and the continued efforts of its program."
Romero will lose $1.25 million in salary.
Romero won two games in the World Series as the Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one to capture their first title since 1980. During the regular season, Romero pitched in 59 innings over 81 games, finishing with a 4-4 record, 2.75 ERA.
"If I'm guilty of something, you know what? I will face it," Romero told the Inquirer on Monday. "But I'm not guilty, and I'm not letting people that don't really know me judge me over something and accuse me of something that I didn't do."
Asked if he believed Romero was innocent, Amaro said, "I have no comment on that. We support the decision that Major League has made."
Romero can workout with the Phillies in spring training and play in exhibition games. He can pitch unpaid on a minor league rehabilitation assignment for the final 16 days of his suspension.
Meanwhile, the Yankees minor league pitcher Sergio Mitre was also suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned substance.
Way to stick up for your guy, Ruben.
Pompous prick.
It doesn't make sense that Romero would go to the trouble of asking all these people if this was okay to take...and then take it before he got an official yes or no.
I can see MLBs side that he tested positive for a banned substance for a second time.
I can see Romero's side that he wasnt intentionally taking it.
But either he, or his agent has to realize that he should have gotten a definitive "this is ok to take," not a "it's not on the list" answer.
That said, i don't care that any of them do drugs, or take supplements, or shoot steroids into their veins...i say let them all take whatever they want.
The Phillies kind of have to sign another lefty reliever now.
That will probably be Happ's spot once he loses his spot in the rotation in the spring.
This is all very interesting.
how great are championships...the phils just lost a huge part of their bullpen and no one cares because they won a world series
How many pages would the Phillies off-season thread usually have in response to an incident like this by now?
I'd say 12.
o/u 12
correct answer 15

I dont understand this last statement
you know you have legit/honest players that dont believe in that shtein and dont want to do harm to their body...and then you have guys that could care less if they had a stroke tomorrow, and do whatever it takes to have have an edge on the competition
that being said...you wouldnt be pissed as a motherfarger if you had Jamie Moyer on the mound (who hasnt done a lick of steroids his whole life and got to where is by his natural skills alone), is pitching to Evan Longoria who just finished his 7th cycle last night and cracks a HR to win the 5th game of the World Series?
so basically your answer is...Moyer should of shot up
no one cares who does what....get over it scientologist
oh an you have no idea what jamie moyer has and hasnt done...theres tons of illegal stuff that doesnt make you cock deez...in fact the longer he plays the more likely he has done "illegal" shtein...and still no one cares

you have to draw a line because there are still honest individuals who dont need that shtein...if not...just throw the whole MLB rulebook/record book out the window...start playing 11 players out there in the outfield and have 3 DH's...cool?

Is Nomar interested in bench duty? I think he'd go to KC or something for a starting gig first.
More importantly, is he any good anymore?
He hasn't played a full season since 2003 but I'd take him for a right-handed bat off the bench for sure.
you wouldnt take him if he bats lefthanded this year?
I mean they currently have Dobbs (L) Stairs (L) and Jenkins (L) coming off the bench. Nomar can hit right-handed and as such he's a lot more valuable than either Stairs or Jenkins.
Plus like I said he's versatile in the field as well being that he can play 3rd, 1st, or even SS in a pinch.
PS: Stop angry drinking so early.
problem with nomar is that he has no power left...they need a right handed bat with a little pop off the bench

QuoteAccording to FoxSports.com, Madson turned down a three-year, $12 million offer from the Phils. The righthanded reliever was 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 76 appearances last season.
What the farg?
Madson's agent is Boras meaning he'll probably hold out for 5 years $50 million
Madson was barely a major league pitcher until last year and now he's got the stones to turn his nose up at 12 million dollars?
Ha.
Stupid. farging. Jocks.
Aside from the HR he gave up to Baldelli in the WS he was money in the playoffs. That substaintally raised his price tag.
looks like Boras is marketing him as a closer
I personally think the offer was fair to him and it it probably seals up the fact that the Phils arent going to just toss bones because of the WS and be stuck in a long term deal with a guy that barely was a pitcher like Rome said...and the chances of him shteinting the bed this year are pretty damn good based on his past
thats fine...work his ass like a mule then welcome to the trade deadline

phillie prospects in espn's newly released top 100....
48. Jason Donald SS Philadelphia Phillies
Donald has no star potential, but he's major-league ready and could be a solid-average shortstop in 2009 if he had the opportunity.
He's a line-drive hitter who uses the whole field well and has good patience, although he can open up a little early and get on top of the ball or swing over it entirely. He has a little loft in his swing but will probably max out around 15-20 homers barring a major increase in strength. His arm is average for short, he gets good reads on ground balls, and is very good on the double play both as a shortstop and on the pivot as a second baseman.
The Phillies' system has players with more upside, like Dominic Brown and Michael Taylor, but Donald's ability to play in the majors right now makes him a valuable property, both to the Phillies if they ask him to fill in for Chase Utley and to other clubs if the Phillies decide to trade him.
60. Carlos Carrasco RHP Philadelphia Phillies
Carrasco will give you a different impression depending on when you see him. He can look like a bona fide No. 2 starter in the big leagues, and he can look like a raw thrower without an average secondary pitch. He also missed time in July with what may have been a sore shoulder, and may have been his own pique over hearing his name in trade talks.
Carrasco pitches at 90-91 and will touch 94, with fringe-average command but good control. His secondary stuff varies; the mid-80s changeup will show plus, and he has some feel for it, but it's not consistent. His breaking ball is improving but still below average. His velocity is pretty easy and he had successful year overall. If everything clicks, he's a No. 3 starter, maybe slightly better if the curveball improves, but right now he doesn't have a clear swing-and-miss pitch for big-league hitters.
84 Dominic Brown OF Philadelphia Phillies
Brown signed as a 20th-round pick in 2006 for a modest $200,000 bonus -- in part because four years of college wasn't an option academically -- and has developed from athlete into prospect in fairly short order. Brown projects to be above-average in all five tools -- hit, power, run, field, arm -- with power the one with the furthest gap between his present grade (40) and future (60 or 65). He's a plus runner who covers a lot of ground in center, with a plus arm that would play in right if he should ever have to switch.
At the plate, he already shows above-average plate discipline and has excellent hand-eye coordination, but mis-times his swing and hits it on the ground far too often for someone with his power potential. He will show raw power in batting practice, and has some physical projection left and should add power as he fills out. He's down here in the rankings because he still has a lot of development ahead of him, but he is top-20 material.
100 Michael Taylor OF Philadelphia Phillies
Taylor was one of the best athletes in the 2007 draft -- and that hardly does him justice, as he's a supreme athlete in an NFL sense, not a baseball sense -- but had the ol' Stanford swing that has made scouts less willing to draft hitters from that school than just about any other major college program. The Phillies revamped Taylor's swing from that stiff, funny-looking Stanford approach to a more fluid swing that lets him utilize his lower half and hit for power, with potentially 40-homer power down the road.
He's adequate defensively in a corner with an average arm. Taylor is still learning, or perhaps re-learning, the game, but wins raves from the Phillies' player development people for his aptitude and work ethic. Taylor played the year at 22, so he was old for the Sally League and not young for the Florida State League, meaning 2009 will be the first real test of his new swing and approach as he goes to Double-A.
when the farg is that spic corrasco gonna pitch in the show. farging lazy mexican.

QuoteAlou is one of several righthanded bats that the Phils are considering for a part-time role. Garciaparra, 35, is the team's first choice, but the two-time American League batting champion is still debating whether to play or retire after experiencing injuries over the last two seasons.
"We can't be held hostage by Nomar, though he'd be a guy we'd like to bring in," Amaro said.
In addition to Alou, the Phils are considering free agents Mark Grudzielanek and Rich Aurilia for the reserve role. Team officials also have spoken with the representatives for free agent Kevin Millar.
"A righthanded bat would help," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We definitely could use one."

Jesus Christ he's a smug little prick.

All Amaro had to do was write a lot of checks. Big farging deal.
yep...in baseball its all about who you acquire whether it be trades drafts or FA...anyone can resign players (especially restricted players) if the owners give the go ahead
Big difference is he got these guys locked up for 3 years so what's turned into the yearly Hamels/Howard salary drama is done. You may not think it's a distraction but Hamels said last offseason when they lowballed him he'd remember it in the future and the Howard situation was a mess.

According to baseballchronology.com, the entire Phils' payroll in 1989 (http://www.baseballchronology.com/Baseball/Years/1989/Payroll.asp) was $8.6 million, whch was the lowest in the league.
Looking further, the payroll of the 1993 pennant winners was $28.7M (#18 in the league), and didn't reach $43.5M until 2002, when they jumped from $41.6M to $58.0M.
To put it in perspective, the Phils had a lower payroll than Tampa Bay for three of the first four years of the Ray's existence.
Part 1 of a Rollins interview was just on CSN:
-- wants to be known as a repeat champion and thinks the Phils haven't gotten enough respect from the league for rolling through the playoffs

Power rankings in February = awesome.
yeah preseason predictions should defnitely be done AFTER the hot stove stuff and free agency is done...should wait at least until around spring training because so much player movement happens during feb and march

Check out last year's ones:
Quote#13 The feeling here is that Phillies took a step back this off-season. How any team can trust Brad Lidge to close is beyond us. But that's assuming he's even on the mound. Lidge had surgery to repair cartilage in his right knee in October. It goes without saying that this is something to watch in spring. If you believe Aaron Rowand was the unsung hero of the offense last season, then being optimistic about the Phils gets that much harder now that he's in San Francisco.
QuoteNew York (96-66)
Atlanta (86-76)
Philadelphia (84-78 )
Florida (76-86)
Washington (72-90)

Preseason rankings, mock drafts, etc all approach being 100% wrong every time, but that doesn't stop more and more lists from coming out each year. They are basically complete wastes of time. Gives people shtein to talk about, I guess.

So, does that mean Happ has the inside track on the 5th spot, or that he's not able to be the situational lefty?
This John Mayberry dude looks like a player. He hit another bomb today. 6'5 guy who can hit for power, run and throw. Apparently Amaro did not want to deal Golson for him, but was talked into it by Gillick and LaMar.
I hope he makes the opening day roster. They need a RH bat off the bench like him.

QuoteTop Prospects For the Phillies
Here are some Phillies minor-leaguers worth keeping an eye on. (With their ages on opening day.)
C Lou Marson, 22 - The system's top catching prospect will play at triple A. Scouts say they'd like to see more from his throwing arm.
RHP Carlos Carrasco, 22 - "There's a tendency to undersell Carrasco," said John Manuel of Baseball America. "But a lot of clubs would like to have him as their top pitching prospect."
INF Jason Donald, 24 - Regular infielder or super sub? The answer could be clearer after he plays at triple A.
OF John Mayberry Jr., 25 - He brings power potential to the upper levels.
RHP Kyle Drabek, 21 - The righthander has power stuff and an excellent breaking ball. He's healthy and could get to double A quickly.
OF Dominic Brown, 21 - The former Miami football recruit "is the kind of athlete we don't see often in our sport," assistant GM Chuck LaMar said. "He's not a football player playing baseball. He's a baseball player who is a gifted athlete." Brown, who projects as an impact big-leaguer, could get to double A this season.
OF Michael Taylor, 23 - He was the most improved player in the system last year. He's a productive power bat headed for double A.
OF Zach Collier, 18 - A strong hitter, he reminds scouts of a young Garret Anderson. Could be ready for single-A Lakewood.
RHP Jason Knapp, 18 - This big, power-armed righthander passed up a North Carolina scholarship last summer. Could be ready for single-A Lakewood. RHP Julian Sampson, 20 - This power-armed righthander, who was scouted by Pat Gillick, led the organization with 11 wins last year. Could open at single-A Clearwater.
RHP Vance Worley, 21 - The polished righthander could open at double A.
RHP Michael Stutes, 22 - "He has an electric arm," LaMar said. Could go to double A.
LHP Joe Savery, 23 - Velocity slipped last season, but he still has significant upside. He should open at double A.
C Travis D'Arnaud, 20 - Drafted for his defense, he showed prowess with the bat last season. He rates as the No. 2 catching prospect behind Marson.
- Jim Salisbury
If the team's #2 catching prospect is really worth mentioning, they are doing better at developing talent than I thought.

cool shirt but what does it mean
They actually got something for Paulino.
QuoteThe Phillies have acquired lefthander reliever Jack Taschner from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for catcher Ronny Paulino, multiple sources have confirmed to the Daily News.
Taschner, 30, was 3-2 with a 4.88 earned run average in 67 appearances for the Giants last season. He pitched 48 innings, allowing 57 hits with 39 strikeouts and 24 walks. For his career, he is 8-4 with a 5.01 ERA in 178 games.
He provides the Phillies with another lefthanded arm in the bullpen, something the Phillies will need especially early in the season while J.C. Romero serves his 50-game suspension.
Paulino was acquired during the winter meetings from Pittsburgh for Jason Jaramillo in an exchange of catching prospects. He was hitting .194 in spring training with a home run and two RBI. He has struck out 12 times in 31 at-bats.
The deal also solidifies Chris Coste as the backup catcher behind Carlos Ruiz. When the deal for Paulino was initially made, speculation was that Coste might be on his way out. Paulino's performance this spring helped insure that was not the case.
Look for more in tomorrow's Daily News
Good deal...
And SF flipped him to Florida.
So he'll get a few big hits against the Phils this year...
it's garbage for garbage. Taschner could only get 2 guys out: choke dawg and white choke dawg

not sure how the game would turn out but watching cole and carlton duel against each other would be pretty freaking awesome.
1980 Phillies vs. 2008 Phillies (My advantages in bold.)
1b - Pete Rose vs. Ryan Howard
2b - Manny Trillo vs. Chase Utley
SS - Larry Bowa vs. Jimmy Rollins
3B - Mike Schmidt vs. Pedro Feliz
LF - Greg Luzinski vs. Pat Burrell
CF - Garry Maddox vs. Shane Victorino
RF - Bake McBride vs. Jayson Werth
C - Bob Boone vs. Carlos Ruiz
SP - Steve Carlton vs. Cole Hamels
SP - Dick Ruthven vs. Brett Myers
SP - Larry Christenson vs. Jamie Moyer
SP - Marty Bystrom / Bob Walk vs. Joe Blanton
CP - Tug McGraw vs. Brad Lidge
Bullpen - ADV 2008 Phillies (Madsen, Romero) vs. 1980 Phillies (Ron Reed, Dickie Noles)
MGR - Dallas Green vs. Charlie Manuel (hard choice)
Both teams had some striking similarities. Both were primarily offensive teams that had great starting pitching and bullpen work down the stretch and in the playoffs. Both had lumbering left fielders that were prone to slumps (though Burrell had a better 2008 than Bull did 1980). Both had catcher in deep slumps most of the season that came alive in the playoffs. Both played like demons down the stretch and through the playoffs. Both overcame fairly late deficits in the division.
There were also some differences. The 1980 team seemed to thrive playing on the edge of oblivion, both in the regular season and the playoffs. They had a tense excitement in nearly every playoff game, falling behind and comeing back at some point (one notable exception was the last win in the WS). The 2008 team played with more of a quiet confidence, an expectation that they would take care of business. None of the series was in doubt (except for perhaps us Philly fans that had already had too much heartbreak) - they won 3-1, 4-1 and 4-1, compared to the 1980 teams comeback in the NLCS (being down 2 games to 1, then to Nolan Ryan in the 8th inning of the deciding game), and tied with the Royals 2-2 and being behind in game five before their comeback (I can still remember the Schmidt liner off Brett's glove because Brett for some reason played for a possible bunt).
If I had to pick a winner, I'd have to say it would be the 2008 team. Hamels isn't Carlton yet, but he's got that kind of stuff, and Myers can beat Ruthven when right (though I picked Ruthven based on a much better 1980 season). After that, the 2008 team just had more experience and depth in the rotation and a killer bullpen. Offensively, the 2008 team has more power and more speed than the 1980 team. I think a series would be close. 2008 Phillies in 6 games.

But seriously, Sheffield would be a good add for $400,000. I think the main issue is that he probably would prefer to go to the AL.
if he couldn't even make the tigers as a DH, i find it hard to believe he's got anything left to play in the field. although it's right field so who cares.
Sheffield thinks he's still an everyday player, and probably will want too much money.
That, and Ruben Amaro is a flaming moron.
Miguel Cairo, baby!

if he wants 500 at bats then no good...if he wants to win a world series and will play team ball his bat would be invaluable to the team

Money is a non-issue. The Tigers still have to pay him.

Phillies announce "New York Mets Day" at Citizens Bank Park
March 31, 2009
Daily News
The Philadelphia Phillies have offered the New York Mets and their fans an olive branch in what has quickly become one of professional sports' most heated rivalries. Today, the Phillies announced that Saturday, May 2, 2009 will be "New York Mets Day" at Citizens Bank Park.
"We understand, with 2009 being the inaugural season at Citi Field, that Mets tickets will be a little hard to come by for some of their most passionate fans," explained Scott Palmer, Phillies Director of Public Affairs. "We just wanted to let the Mets fans know that Philadelphia is nice and close, and that they can consider Citizens Bank Park a home away from home. We'd like them to think of Philadelphia as the 'sixth borough.'"
The team plans to make a multitude of changes around the park to accomodate their new guests. Nathan's hot dogs will replace Philadelphia stand-by Hatfield Franks, and a special White Castle stand will replace Tony Luke's. Pinkberry frozen yogurt will stand in for Pennsylvania classic Turkey Hill ice cream. "We're going to go all out with the concessions," Aramark representatives said. "We want to give them a real New York experience here in Philadelphia."
Additionally, the Phillie Phanatic will be given the day off, with Mr. Met providing entertainment in the stands for fans of all ages. "We know that fans of both teams can appreciate the hilarity of such a fine mascot!", Palmer stated.
"We also understand that Philadelphia is easily accessible for many of the Mets fans in central and northern New Jersey. We're planning special contests to cater to this portion of their fanbase. We'll be raffling off a no-deposit summer rental house in Seaside Heights, a free consultation with world-famous stylist Giuseppe Franco, and a $5,000 shopping spree at Garden State Plaza," Palmer added.
Comcast SportsNet will forgo their normal announcing crew of Harry Kalas, Chris Wheeler, and Gary Matthews, who will hand the microphones over to their friends in the SNY broadcast booth -- Keith Hernandez, Gary Cohen, and Ron Darling.
Actor/comedian Kevin James, a lifelong Mets fan and star of blockbuster Paul Blart: Mall Cop, is expected to throw out the first pitch.
That's all definitely true. The truest article ever, if you will.
April Fool's Day might be, no, definitely is the most idiotic thing ever conceived.
hanukkah is way worse
Hanukkah or Chanukah or whatever isn't so bad a deal. America's need to make little Jewish kids feel better by making it as big as Christmas is an EPIC FAIL.

didn't know he was Amish?
The Mensch of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Was that NY Mets Day thing a joke?
Channy Ho wins the 5th spot; he earned it for sure.
Sheffield and his agent have spoken to Amaro. He's spittin the song and dance about having a lot left and would do whatever the team wanted. Bullshtein. I am not sure I want him around the squad.
Park definitely earned it. In the past you might be about to question the Phillies, but the difference now is that they are the WFC. They earned the benefit of the doubt on every move for at least this upcoming season.
they need a speedy slap hitter who doesn't strike out and can play cf. right now just werth and vic can play cf. right now eric bruntlett is the fastest guy off the bench. you have a power lefty (stairs), a great pinch hitter (dobbs), a catcher (coste), and a utility infielder (bruntlett). you dont need power. you dont need versatility. you need to fill a hole. sheff looks attractive but he aint gonna do the job.
