Proof is at the NovaCare Complex this morning in the form of a 313-pound man the Eagles would literally like to make the centerpiece of their offensive line.
If things go as planned, unrestricted free agent LeCharles Bentley will be holding up an Eagles jersey for a photo opportunity by the end of the weekend after signing a lucrative long-term deal with the team. He is likely to get a signing bonus between $10 million and $12 million.

Here are three possibilities for what's going on:
1) All the stuff about the Eagles and Bentley was BS from the start. One or two guys went with it, then the other reporters didn't want to be left out.
2) There was a tenative agreement before the new deal got done, once the new deal got done and the cap went up, Bentley asked for significantly more and the Eagles wouldn't move up.

Yes, he wasn't on but Sirius confimred it through his agent. They were the ones to break the signing, because they usually cite their sources (Ex. ESPN is reporting.... etc.)

I was listening to WIP online for a few minutes and all I heard was Rhea said that her contact at the airport told her Bentley's flight was cancelled, not that he cancelled his flight. Then I heard someone say that Bentley wanted to have his physical done by his own doctor on Monday. Who knows what's going on.

So, the best free agent in the market wants to come to your team and seems OK with signing a big contract the first day despite several suitors, but you "play it cool" by waiting it out and not even being prepared for him to visit, so he goes to another team and signs basically the same contract on that first day?
I can't defend this at all. Steve Hutchinson, who they probably won't get anyway, can suck my huge furry nutsack. This team should have had LeCharles Bentley in the middle of the line for years to come, but instead we'll get to see the pocket collapsed from the inside out and no interior running game again.

I don't think it costed them. He renegged on our agreement. It wouldn't have made a difference when free agency starts.

I don't see Hutchinson being a realistic possibility. The transition tag is basically a bidding war in and of itself, don't think the Eagles are interested in paying so much that it takes the bidding out of it.
This is a debacle. Without them getting Hutchinson, they had better resign Runyan, and do big things in the draft. The weakest link was both lines last year, and if they don't do some serious work on or the other in FA, it'll go down as one of the worst FA's in recent years.
It better be a realistic possibility. The Eagles just farged themselves and they better make up for it, or farg them. I can't believe they farged something like this up so easily.

FWIW (and trust me, I'm as pissed off as anyone) the hosts on Sirius think Bentley got too much money and that the Browns would have been better off going with somebody like Mawae. That despite his age he's still a top Center in the league and that he won't command huge dollars.

Hindsight is 20/20 so you are just going to have to take my word for this, but ever since free agency initially got delayed, I always had this little feeling that something would happen and we wouldn't get Bentley. Bentley DIDN'T TAKE LESS--according to PFT.com, the Browns gave him 36M over 6 years with a 12.5M bonus. The Eagles were offering him 5.6M per year in the first three years.

That is the complete opposite of aggressive and all-but guarantees that the team will not get any of the top-end talent.
Depth is great and all, but this team needs starting help at DT, OL (possibly more than one spot), SAM LB, and FB in order to fix some of the mistakes of last season.
This first day speaks volumes.
Well I'm hoping that they have scheduled visits or made some calls no one knows about.

They have to spend atleast 14 mil. Im pretty sure a team is required to spend atleast 85% of the cap limit by rule. What amazes me is Spadaros comment this morning on the EMB, where he frankly stated the Eagles have no visits planned for today.........This amazes me.
Losing Bentley sucks, but...think of it this way.
Center was not a huge hole on our team. Fraley is an acceptable player. Jackson showed flashes of real ability last year. We lost out on an upgrade, but we aren't stuck with a position that has no answers.
I'm more concerned about us improving the DL.

How do you do this? You have an owner and his best buddy making the rules. They are at fault IMO. They have Reid locked up for another 5-6 years. Banner is the anal retentive tightwad that negotiates contracts. Hes at fault. His jobs more then secure.

guess we should have listened to Bentley when he denied the Eagles stuff days ago.
The ONLY positive I can think in this situation is if the Eagles were willing to spend big bucks on Bentley, then they should be ready to spend that same money on something else.
Even the Eagles won't just say "No Bentley? Oh well, looks like that's that with free agency."
Maybe they have made contacts with Hutchinson, but didn't let it get out, because he's drawing a lot of interest.

According to Brookover's article in Sunday's Inky, it WAS ONE OF BENTLEY'S FRIENDS AND TWO UNIDENTIFIED LEAGUE SOURCES that said there was a deal in place withthe Eagles. Bentley's agent has denied there was even a thought about the Eagles, saying that Cleveland was where he wanted to be all the time.

I have no problem with Bentley, after sleeping on it. No matter what happened before free agency started, he had a right to go to his first choice team and get an offer, and he had a right to sign it.
The Eagles could still massively improve the offensive line by giving Runyan an offer and getting Mawae, Hutchinson, or even a guy like Stephen Neal from the Pats.

One thing I came up with was Mike Williams, cut by Buffalo. Guy was a beast and a top-5 pick coming out of college and never caught on right with the Bills. I wonder if he could be a possibility at RT.
Still, I'd rather re-sign big Jon if nothing else.

Most likely it was Bentley's ties to Cleveland. He was born and raised there, went to St. Ignatius High School, a football power in the city, and his family, including two children, remains there.
The Eagles, according to a league source, feared that Bentley might be leaning toward signing with the Browns earlier in the week when word leaked that Cleveland was trying to trade center Jeff Faine, a three-year starter and former first-round draft pick who is just 24 years old.
By sunrise, the Eagles knew Bentley was headed to Cleveland and they would have to look elsewhere to improve their offensive line.
The news about Bentley probably wasn't quite as jarring to the Eagles as watching Dallas safety Roy Williams return that Donovan McNabb interception for a touchdown in the Monday Night Football game that ended the Eagles' playoff hopes and the quarterback's season. But it was an awful way to open the free-agent season that they hope they can use to recover from a 6-10 record that was matched by the lowly Browns.
Whining over the Eagles not signing a guy who never had any intention of signing with them is very productive.

I'm listening to the "Spadaro Meltdown" at the moment. farging absolutely hilarious. This stuff has gotta be a borderline fireable offense. He loses his cool on like three guys, almost losing his mind on the guys. It's an excellent way to get your mind off the bumbling FO. :-D
