To kick off the baseball offseason talk...
1. Trader Jack mcKeon has resigned from the Marlins job. He grew tired of the prima donnas on the team, I read.
2. The Tigers fired Alan Trammell today. Good job in getting the guy fired, Pudge.

first off, it's pooholes.
second of all, there's no way ortiz deserves the al mvp over a-rod. fielding has to factor in somewhere...plus, ortiz has manny hitting behind him.
oritz has a gazillion clutch hits
arod is a nancy boy
no dice
Yeah A-Rod hardly has any support in that lineup.
boston scored the most runs in the league...they have the better lineup.
and a-rod has more game winning rbi than big poosy...also more hrs & a higher avg by around 20 points.
you're letting your anti-yankees bias get the best of you again. :-D

Far from it. I was just pointing out that saying Ortiz is protected by Manny and therefore should not win the MVP over A-Rod is stupid, b/c the Yanks have a pretty ridiculous lineup around that fag. Personally, I don't think Ortiz, or any DH, should be the MVP. I also don't think that A-Rod is even the MVP of his team, let alone the league. If the choice is only between Ortiz and A-Rod, I would vote for A-Rod, but since it isn't neither would get my vote. A-Rod would probably get my 'league's best player' vote every year, but not MVP when Riviera is the most important player on that team.
well, they rarely give the mvp to pitchers...let alone relief pitchers.
that's why a-rod gets the mvp & rivera gets the cy young. :yay

Relievers rarely get the Cy Young. This year, however, there are no outstanding starting pitchers in the AL, and Rivera could sneak it in.

And Detroit has hired Jim Leyland (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2180682)
QuotePITTSBURGH -- Jim Leyland has agreed to manage the Detroit Tigers, a person close to the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The Tigers scheduled a "major" announcement for the late afternoon, but declined to say what it was about.
Soon after Alan Trammell was told he was not welcomed back as manager Monday morning, Leyland was en route to the Motor City.
And after interviewing with Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski on Monday night, Leyland told The Detroit News he'd accept the Tigers job if it's the right fit.
"If there's a fit for both parties and I'm offered the position, I'll accept it," he told the newspaper.
Dombrowski also interviewed Juan Samuel and Bruce Fields -- both from Trammell's staff -- the Detroit News reported, before discussing the opening with Leyland.
"I am driven to move quickly because I think there could be a lot of interest in Jim Leyland," said Dombrowski, adding his search could end as soon as Tuesday.
Leyland, a former Florida, Pittsburgh and Colorado manager, told The Associated Press that the Tigers called him Monday morning to set up an interview with him that night.
"It's well known that I interviewed with Philadelphia last winter, and I'd like to manage again," Leyland said last month.
Leyland helped the Marlins win the 1997 World Series -- with Dombrowski as general manager -- and was a two-time NL Manager of the Year while leading the Pirates. He was 72-90 with the Rockies in 1999, his last season as manager.
Does Andy know that Dombrowski did it?
Over/Under on Leyland: One season.
QuoteIn Detroit yesterday, Leyland met with Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski concerning his coaching staff.
That staff will include former Pirate Don Slaught as the Tigers' hitting coach, former Pirates managers Gene Lamont (bench coach and third-base coach) and Lloyd McClendon (bullpen coach) and possibly former Pirates infielder Rafael Belliard (infield coach).
In addition, Leyland told the Detroit Free Press, he wants former Pirates center fielder Andy Van Slyke to be the first base and outfield coach.
Van Slyke is expected to give Leyland an answer as soon as today.

Schmidt talked to Michael Barkann tonight in a phone interview:
-- says even though the Threshers team stunk, he enjoyed his experience and became interested in a major league job
-- says the Phillies wanted an established manager last year, so he wasn't considered
-- says Tampa Bay isn't a pressure situation because they're still building and he's interested in teaching those guys for the next "4 or 5 years"....says he's interested in at least "4 or 5" of the young guys they have
-- thinks the Rays need a pitcher or 2 in free agency and thinks his "name" would be attractive to free agents ::)
-- thinks his patience might wear thin with the losing
-- says he's a darkhorse candidate among the others being interviewed
-- says a minor league job "wasn't the right thing" for him and his family and he wants a major league job so he can be paid better....says he was "wasting his time at the minor league level" ::)
Whatever... ::)
Somehow I don't believe that money is a problem for the Schmidt family.

Trade being rumored but not completed yet: Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Texas for Hank Blalock and a top pitching prospect
Boston is in the mix too.

Boston just vaulted itself back to the top of the heap with that deal.
Why the farg can't the Phillies ever pull off something like this?
Ugh.
because the PHillies suck romey. dont tell me you forgot so soon. ;)
I may be in the minority, but...
Josh Beckett (who has to be the main part of the deal for the Sox) has been vastly overrated in his career. He has all the talent in the world, but last season was the FIRST in which he won even TEN games (he won 15). Who knows if Beckett will have a recurrance of the blister problems that have plagued him throughout his career.
And, while Lowell may have just had a really, REALLY bad season, he is also at an age (32) where his skills could be in decline. Does this mean that the Sox move Mueller to 2nd base? Is Mueller on the block? Is Boston just a way station for Lowell?
Mueller's a FA, Whizzer. Minnesota reportedly has the hots for him.
Beckett is injury prone but he's a great pick-up for Boston.
AJ Burnett is the one from that FLA staff who I think is big time overrated. Whoever gives him $50M this year is fargin stupid. The dude's a 49-50 lifetime pitcher with a screw loose.

Ed...sup with the Blalock rumors? Anything you've heard or read or just wishful thinking?
I like Muller. He'd be an upgrade over Bell, anyway.
I agree about Burnett. Am I right in remembering that he's had TJ surgery? If so, any GM that would give him $50M (other than Cashman, who plays with Monopoly money) should be immediately fired.
Yeah, he had TJ surgery and other injuries too. He's a fraud.
Mueller is kinda old. I'm done with the "sign the old guy to play 3B" thing. Need some youth there.
The ESPN article on Beckett/Texas originally said that the Phils, Twins and Rays are interested in trading for Blalock...
I would love for the Blalock rumor to be true. I saw him play in the minors (when Texas still had their A team in the FSL) along with Teixeira, and they were incredible even back then. You knew both would make the majors.
Even got Blalock to sign his minor league card, and Teixeira a ball. :D
Thome and Bell for Blalock. Noooo problem.
That would be unbeliveable!

I'd bet that Texas would be looking at Floyd and/or Hamels, for starters. They need pitching, badly.
I'd give them Floyd for Blalock
Floyd and a prospect.
blalock is another lefty, right? platoon him and bell. king of lhp must stay. :deion
Yeah, he's a LH.
Bell must get herpes.
they would probably want abreu in return. frankley, i think trading abreu's offense is blalocks offense isnt a good idea. blalock is just like burrell and howard. ive said i only trade abreu for superior pitching. abreu will be surley missed and trading him is the only way people will realize his contributions to this team.
blalock is obviously leaps and bounds better than david bell. but actually, im serious when i said i would platoon bell with blalock. he hits under .200 against lhp last year. if we get blalock without trading abreu, then the lineup would have to go: abreu-rollins-utley-howard-burrell-blalock-victorinio-loserthal.
It's possible that Abreu could be in the mix. They have some good young outfielders (Laynce Nix for one). Delucci had a career year last year and still only sported a .251 average. Kevin Mench is a good young player, but I've heard his name mentioned in a few different trading scenarios. Richard Hidalgo is overrated.
I'd still say that target one for the Rangers is pitching, pitching and more pitching. Their starting staff sucks other than Chris Young (a good young pitcher that faded at the tail end of last season). Rogers is nutso and gone. I'm not even sure that Floyd would bring the Rangers to the table. They'd want Hamels, I believe.
All this is, of course, mere speculation anyway. :deion

Bright lights attract Marlins with dim outlook at homeBy Jayson Stark
ESPN.com
So where do the Florida Marlins go from here?
Boise? Binghamton? Bismarck? Belize?
OK, we all know it will be none of the above. As anybody who followed the quest to move the Expos knows, the Marlins have more options to move Carlos Delgado than they do to move the franchise. So what are those options? Let's take a look:
LAS VEGAS -- There are rumblings that the folks from Vegas were on the phone to the Marlins within minutes of Tuesday's announcement. And let's just say there is major mutual interest. Team president David Samson told ESPN.com he would "expect us to make a trip [to Vegas] within the next two weeks." And according to one longtime friend of owner Jeffrey Lorie, he has long viewed Vegas as "a gold mine."
But Vegas does have its obstacles. One is those pesky little gambling issues, which the commissioner and Loria's fellow owners would have to resolve. But an even more practical issue is the same one that faces the Marlins in Florida: Lack of a real ballpark.
The minor-league park in town, Cashman Field, is barely adequate to house a Pacific Coast League game, let alone a big-league game. And while there has been lots of talk about building a park near the fabled Strip, nobody has thrown out the first jackhammer -- or blank check.
One baseball man familiar with the situation says there is "no way" Vegas could get a ballpark up and operable before 2010. But since the Marlins have a lease in Florida till then, they could, in theory, stagger through four lame-duck seasons while they're waiting for the moving vans. It's not a perfect situation. But people who know Loria continue to predict that if Vegas builds it, the Marlins will come. ODDS: 2 TO 1.
PORTLAND, ORE. -- Portland made a serious run at the Expos. And while it never made it beyond baseball's Plan B list, the city at least positioned itself as a landing place for The Next Team Looking to Move.
But Portland is yet one more city that would need to build a ballpark. And inside baseball, folks were privately skeptical that the city's announced financing plans for a park to house the Expos were politically viable. Nevertheless, there were immediate noises out of Portland on Tuesday that it was still interested. So you can bet you'll be hearing plenty more about that possibility over the next few months. ODDS: 25 TO 1.
NORTH JERSEY -- As a native New Yorker, Loria has always fantasized about lugging a team up the Turnpike to the Meadowlands. But that fantasy is already stuck in traffic, without ever getting a chance to pull out of the Vince Lombardi rest stop.
After the deal MLB cut with Peter Angelos and the Orioles to sign off on the Expos' move to D.C., just imagine what George Steinbrenner and the Wilpons would ask before they'd allow another team to move to North Jersey. Heck, it's a figure that would make A-Rod's contract look like subway fare. So forget that. ODDS: 2.9 TRILLION TO 1.
MONTERREY, MEXICO -- Believe it or not, this is one of the MLB power brokers' most preferred destinations. Monterrey has 3 million people hanging around the neighborhood. Many of those people seem to have some decent affection for baseball. And enough of them have money in their checking accounts that MLB looks at Monterrey as its No. 1 destination for international expansion.
But does that mean Loria has any interest in moving there? From all indications, it sure isn't at the top of his list. ODDS: 50 TO 1.
PARIS -- As the global art-dealing kind of guy he is, Loria loves Paris almost as much as he loves winning the World Series. Too bad most of those 2 million Parisians wouldn't know a sacrifice from a sacre bleu. ODDS: 78 GAZILLION TO 1.
SOUTH FLORIDA -- Samson made a point Tuesday of telling anyone paying attention that it's still the Marlins' preference to stick around and play under the palm trees. And in a perfect world, that's what should and would happen.
It's wrong. All wrong. But without a real ballpark, with a real retractable roof, it ain't happening. So it's awfully hard to blame the Marlins for announcing what they announced on Tuesday, after all these years of trying to build a stadium that apparently is destined never to leave the architect's pad.
"We had to do something," Samson told ESPN.com. "We've come to the end of the line. Time has run out."
Those South Florida ballpark proposals aren't 100 percent dead, Samson said. But it's close.
"It's like the great Billy Crystal line from 'Princess Bride,' " Samson said. "It's mostly dead. And by mostly dead, that means it's somewhat alive. So there are some situations that are still percolating. But you need a stethoscope to hear the heartbeat, because it's so faint."
The Marlins didn't do what they did Tuesday because they're hell-bent to leave. They did it because it was the only way they could let their community know: It's now or never. Figure it out -- or somebody else will.
We're not convinced yet that someone in South Florida won't figure out some new idea, some new formula. So we'll place the odds at a way too optimistic 5 TO 1.
But if we were betting men, we'd bet that by 2010, the Florida Marlins will be known as the Vegas Craps Rollers. Or something like that. And we bet the sports book at Caesars will be happy to take that wager, too.
BTW: I don't feel one itsy bitsy bit for those frauds in South Florida who call themselves Marlins fans. Not only do I hope that they lose the Marlins, I hope the Heat & Panthers take a hike as well. Leave the Dolphins there, though. Even shteinkicking rednecks need a little bit of fun in their pathetic lives.
Hey, don't make me have to always go to St. Pete to watch a major league game. >:(
And, at least with the Fish, I can see the Phils 3 times or so a year. :deion
So is Loria "The Guy In France Jr."?
Someone get Buddy Ryan on the horn!
Mets trade for Carlos Delgado...
QuoteBY JON HEYMAN
NEWSDAY STAFF WRITER
November 23, 2005, 8:13 AM EST
The Mets have reached an agreement for a trade to bring Carlos Delgado from the Marlins, Newsday has learned. The trade won't be finalized until medical examinations of the players involved are complete and commissioner Bud Selig signs off on the deal.
The Mets have agreed to send righthanded pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit and young first baseman Mike Jacobs to the Marlins for Delgado, according to someone familiar with the deal. As part of the deal, the Marlins will send $7 million back to the Mets to cover part of the $48 million remaining on Delgado's contract.
Delgado, 33, does not have veto powers over a trade. The lefthanded-hitting first baseman batted .301 with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs last year with the Marlins.
Acquiring a player with Delgado's credentials could also help the Mets sign closer Billy Wagner, who has told the team that winning a championship is his first priority. The Mets offered Wagner a three-year, $30-million deal yesterday after taking him on a tour of the New York suburbs earlier this week.
that's bad for the Phillies in 2 respects, the Mets have a killer lineup now, and it may mean bye-bye Billy
but the fargin Marlins, what a joke, sell out to win the WS every couple of years a provide garbage in between. they do have more WS titles than the Phillies do, in about 1/10th of the Phillies existence.
No matter who the Mets get, they will still finish 4th in the division at best.
It might be bad in the short run for the Phils. Delgado is better defensively than Jacobs but Jacobs has long term promise. And obviously Carlos is the better slugger now.
But the Mets are unloading their farm. They traded Petit, Jacobs, Kazmir and others to land older players. Plus they gave Pedro a 4th year and might give Wags a 4th year.
They have a TON of money to toss around though because of that new TV deal they got with MSG or whoever their station is up there.
They are supposedly talking to ARZ about landing Javier Vazquez too. And Vazquez listed PHL as one of the 6 teams he will not go to along with TEX, SEA, COL and two others.
They are also talking to Bengie Molina and Ramon Hernandez for their open C spot too.
The Marlins are selling big time because they want out of FLA. LoDuca is available and if I am Pat GIllick I would ask about him as well and go after Hernandez and Molina.

vazquez is totally overrated by gammons and his other cronnies. the guy isnt real good and doesnt put up good enough stats to justify his salary. let the mets continue to cripple their farm system and trade for him. they still wont any pitching. they still will suck. but they will still own the phillies.

QuoteBest Seats at Yankee Games Will Cost $110
NEW YORK (AP) -- Supporting baseball's biggest payroll will mean an increase in ticket prices for the New York Yankees, who are boosting the price of many of their best box seats over $100.
The Yankees said Friday they are raising the price of their box seats closest to the field by $5 to $20, depending on their row and location. The seats, known as field championship boxes, will sell for $110, $105, $100 and $95, up from $90 last season.
New York's best regular seats, which include waiter service, are available only as part of season ticket plans.
With many sections for next year already sold out because of season tickets, the price of the top seat available in advance for individual game sales will be $55 for lower deck reserved, an increase of $5. Those seats will sell for $57 on the days of games.
Upper deck reserved seats will remain unchanged: $17 as part of season tickets, $19 in advance of individual games and $20 on days of games. Bleacher seats will remain at $10 as part of season tickets and $12 for individual games.
The Yankees open their season April 3 at Oakland and play their home opener April 11 against Kansas City. Individual game tickets go on sale Dec. 16.
New York had a payroll of about $205 million last season, when it lost to the Los Angeles Angels in the first round of the playoffs. The Yankees had 43 sellouts at home and drew an AL record 4,090,696 fans at home last season.

Red Sox sue to keep ball that made '04 Series final outAssociated Press
BOSTON -- The Red Sox have filed a lawsuit seeking a court order to keep the ball that Doug Mientkiewicz caught for the final out to clinch Boston's 2004 World Series title, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.
Ownership of the ball has been in dispute during the 13 months since pitcher Keith Foulke flipped it to Mientkiewicz, giving Boston a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals and its first World Series championship in 86 years.
Who should get to keep the ball from the final out of the 2004 World Series?
Doug Mientkiewicz
Boston Red Sox
Mientkiewicz, who clutched the ball in his glove and joined teammates in celebration, later put the ball in a safe deposit box and claimed ownership when the Red Sox asked for it.
In January, days after he was traded to the New York Mets, he agreed to lend the ball to the Red Sox for one year. He would get it back "unless the ultimate issue of ownership has been otherwise resolved," the agreement said.
That clause, The Boston Globe reported, led team lawyers to Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday. The suit asks the court to place the ball in a "secure location" until ownership is decided.
The team's lawyers argue that Mientkiewicz gained possession of the ball only because he was a Red Sox employee, and that the ball is team property.
"From our perspective, it is very important that an artifact with this much history, it was 86 years in the making, be part of the club archive and be available for fans to experience," Lucinda Treat, the team's chief legal officer, told the newspaper.
The Red Sox made quite a splash once they got the ball on Feb. 3, when it was driven to Fenway Park in a Brinks truck. The ball joined the World Series trophy on a tour of Massachusetts cities and towns.
Neither Mientkiewicz nor the players' association were reached for comment, the Globe reported.
When he agreed to lend the ball to the team, Mientkiewicz said: "I want the fans to see it, and that's what both the Red Sox and I agreed on."
At that time, he said it was "very cordial, and we worked something out." He also said he "probably" would get the ball back after a year.
Their agreement said proceeds directly derived from exhibiting the ball would be donated to the Red Sox Foundation, the team's charity organization.
Arrogant iceholes. I hate Boston almost as much as I detest the Yankees at this point.
Hang on to that ball, you queers... it's probably the last chance you'll ever get to see a World Series ball for another 100 years.

Word on the street is that Lo Duca and Seo or Benson may be sent to Arizona for Vazquez and a prospect. But even if that doesnt pan out, theres Pedro, Glavine, Zambrano, Seo and Trachsel. I wouldnt say thats the best starting pitching staff ever, but its certainly more than nothing.
And Reyes is 22 years old, cut him some slack, he's only gonna get better.
Vazquez is vastly overrated by the media. They seem to think he is a top of the rotation starter, when in fact he kinda comparable to jeff suppan and jeff weaver. yea, big names.

The Braves are trying to get Edgar Renteria from Boston for 3B Andy Marte. The Sox then want to flip Marte to the Rays for Julio Lugo.
Braves asked about Adam Everett and were denied. Same with Craig Monroe.
Yankees asking everyone and their momma for a CF. They asked Houston about Taveras and were laughed at.
QuotePeter Gammons is saying the Dodgers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for Jonathan Broxton. I suppose Soriano could take over at third base; he's yet to play a Major League game in the outfield. Broxton would fit well in either the starting rotation or the 'pen. The hefty right-hander split time between the roles at Double A Jacksonville in 2005. One of Broxton's specialties (besides the palmball) is limiting the home run, a trait that will come in handy in a ballpark that inflates homers by 19%.

Time for Rocket to retire. I am so tired of hearing about him every off-season and then hearing about the elaborate schemes that he holds the Astros hostage for in order for him to return. And these privleges come on top of his ginormous salary.
F him. He's into Favre territory with me now.
Retire already, Roger.
the Phillies do know they are allowed make moves now, right?
orioles signed ramon hernandez for 4 years and 27 mil...relatively cheap
i would have really liked the phils to have gotten him...hes very good defensively and calls a good game...or everything that leiberthal isnt
the phillies would have had to pay rougly 15 mil for a catcher this year. no can do. loser sucks, but wade farged up so he sticks. booo.
they anticipated having to pay a lot more to get rid of thome...having to pay out six mil for a back up catcher for just one season wouldnt have killed them
what about starting pitching, the bullpen, the bench. needs. needs. needs.
im saying suck it up and spend six mil more than your projected 06 budget to get a very good catcher in here for the next four years
its a stupid argument anyway as there was never a chance it was going to happen...as much as i wanted it to

I was glad to see the Yanks offer Bernie Williams arbitration. He's old and not the player he used to be but he (along with Jeter) have been the face of the Yankees for the last 10 years. Looks like he'll get to retire in pinstripes, as he should. Nice move by Steinbrenner. Who knew he had a heart?
Redmon went to KC for Jeremy Affeldt and another quality reliever (brainfarting and I can't remember his name). Pointless trade for both teams imo. The Royals have a quality starter now but no one to finish the game so Redmon better go all 9 innings otherwise he'll finish the season with a shteinload of no decisions.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh got a couple of nice guys for the pen. Too bad they'll never come in to preserve a lead but will pitch a ton of innings and break down shortly after the AS Breack.
Great trade!

Ok, one thing that baffles me is that SD just traded Sean Burroughs' sorry ass to the Rays for Dewon Brazelton. If they had no plans on keeping Brazelton why not just non-tender Burroughs and not even bother making the trade? Confusing move by Kevin Towers there.
Danny Kolb was just reacquired by Milwaukee too...
If I am Pat Gillick I start loading up on pitching and hope that one or two of these guys can stick...

Red Sox meet with Boras to discuss MillwoodESPN.com news services
Days after losing Johnny Damon to the New York Yankees, the Red Sox were meeting with his agent, Scott Boras, about bringing pitcher Kevin Millwood to Boston.
Friendly advice?
Before Johnny Damon made his decision to accept the Yankees' four-year offer, Damon and his wife looked for some advice from former teammate Manny Ramirez.
"Manny said, 'You should go to New York,' " Michelle Damon told The New York Post.
Johnny Damon, who told the paper that Boston is "dismantling" its roster, confirmed the conversation.
Boras left New York hours after finalizing Damon's four-year, $52 million deal with the Yankees on Friday to meet with Red Sox representatives.
Boston president Larry Lucchino declined to comment on whether an offer was made. Earlier this week, Boras was in Texas to talk about the 2005 AL ERA champion with the Rangers. The Dallas Morning News reported in Saturday's editions that the Rangers had offered Millwood three guaranteed years at around $10 million per year; however, a source told the Morning News that the team had guaranteed a fourth year that would make the offer worth more than $40 million.
"I can confirm that we are in the process seeking to sign Millwood," Lucchino told The Associated Press on Friday night, adding that a resolution was not imminent.
Boras didn't immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.
Millwood went 9-11 with a 2.86 ERA in 30 starts for the Indians last season and made $7 million. He was limited to 25 starts with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004, when he was bothered by elbow swelling. While he was 9-6 with a 4.85 ERA for the Phillies that season, he won only two games after hurting his right elbow.
Although the Red Sox need a shortstop, a first baseman and a center fielder, they would appear to have plenty of starting pitchers. But lefty David Wells has asked for a trade closer to his West Coast home, and the team has said it would try to accommodate him.
Left fielder Manny Ramirez has also asked for a trade. Lucchino said discussions on Wells and Ramirez continue "with some frequency."
Unfargingbelievable.

As a Sox fan, I guess I would like to have to seen him stay a one-club man. But maybe his competitive instincts are driving him on for another year and he still has something to prove to himself and Kenny Williams. It was fantastic he got a ring, though, and, even when it became less likely that KW wasn't going to bring him back he still acted with class. I just hope he doesn't suffer any long-term health damage by continuing to play. I'll still be looking out for his performances in Oakland.
I was making fun of a buddy of mine who actually thinks Thomas will add a spark to the A's lineup.

Shaved Fish: Girardi forbids facial hair

Posted: February 6, 2006
Associated Press
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Now that the Florida Marlins have trimmed their payroll, facial hair is next.
New manager Joe Girardi wants to see no goatees, mustaches or beards when players begin reporting for spring training Feb. 18.
A former catcher with the New York Yankees, Girardi liked owner George Steinbrenner's rule that permitted neatly trimmed mustaches but no beards or shaggy hair. Girardi's policy of no facial hair will be even stricter, and a first for the Marlins.
"I want players to look neat and responsible," Girardi said at a media luncheon Monday. "Maybe it's old school. But it's kind of neat when people are always clean, and I like it."
At 41, Girardi is the successor to 75-year-old Jack McKeon and part of a youth movement for the Marlins, who unloaded seven everyday starters, two starting pitchers and their closer to reduce the payroll.
Battling for the vacated jobs in spring training will be plenty of prospects. Some of them might struggle to grow a beard, even if allowed.
"I don't have too much facial hair, so unfortunately for me, it's not an option," said first baseman Mike Jacobs, stroking his smooth chin. "If the manager has certain things he wants his way, you have to go with it."
Girardi said his players have laughed about the rule, and he expects little resistance. He said he'll likely always prohibit facial hair, even with a veteran team.
"You have a responsibility of what you look like," he said. "You find out which players want to be disciplined in the little things. And if you can be disciplined in the little things, a lot of times you can be disciplined in the big things."
Pitchers and catchers report to the training complex in Jupiter on Feb. 18, with the rest of the squad to follow by the 21st. The first full-squad workout is Feb. 23.
Expectations are similar to 1998, when another salary purge sent the Marlins reeling to a 108-loss season a year after they won the World Series. Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett, A.J. Burnett, Carlos Delgado, Luis Castillo and Juan Pierre are among those to depart since last season.
Still, Girardi is raring to go.
"I can't wait," he said. "Baseball is a passion of mine. You take a month off, and then you miss it. I find myself watching the Caribbean World Series on TV, and there probably aren't a ton of people doing that. But I love the game.
"You manage the club you have. A lot of kids will have a lot of opportunities."
They just won't have beards.

Dammit, Mattingly! I told you to shave those sideburns!
That won't be a big deal. Most of the Marlins players can't grow facial hair anyway.

Molina angry at Angels; Hillenbrand to stay with JaysAssociated Press
TORONTO -- Bengie Molina is angry at the Los Angeles Angels.
Without a notice, without calling me, that said a lot," the catcher said Thursday, three days after agreeing to a $5 million, one-year contract with Toronto. "That's what really hurts me."
Toronto, finishing a busy offseason, also agreed Thursday to a $5.8 million, one-year contract with infielder Shea Hillenbrand, who had been scheduled for a salary arbitration hearing next week.
Molina was introduced as the Blue Jays' new catcher. His bitterness toward the Angels was clear.
"I think I built a good relationship with them," he said. "They never let me know. They just threw me like a piece of trash."
Molina signed with the Angels when he was 17.
"I don't think I did one thing to disrespect them at all for all those years," Molina said. "If anything I went out of my way for them. I even helped them get Bartolo Colon on to that club. I gave him a call. I called a couple of guys for them. And now when I needed a call, they never called me."
The 31-year-old Molina hit a career-best .295 last season with 15 homers and 69 RBI. He won Gold Gloves in 2002 and 2003.
"Bengie was an integral part of the success of this organization for the last several years and everyone involved in this organization wishes him nothing but the very best," Angels spokesman Tim Mead said.
Molina was seeking a longterm contract, and Angels GM Bill Stoneman wanted to give younger players an opportunity, according to Mead.
"We make business decisions and decisions based on personnel," Mead said. "Everyone here thinks very fondly of Bengie and continues to do so."
Jose Molina, Bengie's brother, remains with the Angels.
The New York Mets spoke with Bengie Molina in November and offered an $18 million, three-year contract. New York then had the chance to acquire Paul Lo Duca from the Florida Marlins and withdrew the offer to Molina.
"I took a lot less money to come over here for a reason, and that's to win," Molina said. ::) :-D :-D
Ummm... no, Bengie. You took a lot less money because no one wanted to pay your idiotic asking price.
Dumbass.

The Yankees are more important than baseball. The NY on the players cap means more than representing their country in internation competition, one that further promotes the sport globaly. We will continue to blindly spend money on top free agents, even though we refuse to acknowledge the gaping hole in the starting rotation. We also continue to be smug and arrogant, despite not winning a championship since 2000. We are the best team, the only team that matters. Thank you.

Damn.
Iwonder if those eye problems he has had anything to do with it?
He's gone downhill since that stuff. It forced him to retire. Then he got in trouble for assault and now this.
I liked watching him play. That 1991 Twins Braves Series was great.
His eye problems didn't. The buckets of KFC did...

Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Palmeiro, and Giambi should all have asterics next to their statistics. :boo
Or baseball should be forced into extinction.
