$9 for a PBR at the new Yankee Stadium (http://newstadiuminsider.blogspot.com/2009/04/one-last-chance-to-speculate-over.html)
I would pay it happily. So delicious.

Dude.
I guess that's a yes
Indeed.
Do you rock a PBR belt-buckle, Rjs?
Belt buckles aren't exactly my style. With that in mind I would wear that shtein in a heartbeat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aClZuTmY2VQ&feature=related
My local Irish pub has 75 cent PBR pints on Thursday nights plus there's almost no chance of ever seeing a Yankees fan there.
There is an even chance of seeing me there, though, so that sort of ruins it for everyone else.
75 cent pints?! Holy shtein that's amazing.
The moneylover can't argue with that value.
They have either PBR cans for $.75 or drafts for the same price.
It's a two story pub with each floor being about 1,500 square feet. They usually have entertainment upstairs and then shuffleboard, darts, etc. downstairs. On Sunday nights they have $3 Guinness Pints too.
The place is usually so crowded you can't even get in unless you're a regular. I walked past a line of at least 150 people on St. Patty's Day.

Yeah, crazy shtein. I watched that game last night and was gonna check our league out today to see if he was available.
I saw it breaking on ESPN when I was in the gym. I just read a story about him last week about how the Angels drafted him despite knowing he would need TJ surgey and how they looked like they won that gamble.

Yeah, so I was reading a Yahoo article that was written after the game last night.
Quote"Right now we're trying to get through some things," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Our depth has been stretched to a limit we're a little uncomfortable with."
And that's about as bearish as you'll get out of Scioscia, on any subject.
Waiting on John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar, he'll lean on Dustin Moseley, Shane Loux and Nick Adenhart for at least a month and probably longer. Not as young but just as squirrelly, the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners are trying to make something from what were two of the worst rotations in the game last season.
For the time being, they'll all survive and get the ball to the next guy, clean as possible.
Uh........knock on wood.
i hope they allow each member of the Angels 5 minutes alone in a room with a bat with that sob that did it. prick had a suspended license and was over the legal limit. rot in hell you mother farger.

QuoteLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The mother of New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain has been arrested on charges of selling methamphetamine to an undercover police officer in February.
Jacqueline Standley was arrested at her apartment Saturday night, Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said Monday.
Beggs said she sold 1 gram of a substance believed to be meth to an officer for $110 on Feb. 11. The substance was confirmed as meth at the state laboratory.
The 44-year-old Standley was charged Monday with delivery of an exceptionally hazardous drug, a felony. Her bail was set at $5,000 and she was assigned a public defender, whose name was not on her jail record.
Last month, Chamberlain pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was given nine months probation and a $400 fine for his October arrest.

He wrote an amazing article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/opinion/15glanville-harrykalas.html) about Harry, too.
Good shtein.
Wonder what the story was on this...and its obvious why they sucked back then. Don't focus on playing, focus on the seating charts!
QuoteOne season, after an alleged back-of-the-plane incident had violated the rule that states "what happens in the back of the plane, stays in the back of the plane," the team became divided. The jury of Phillies debated whether all non-players should be banished from the back of the plane. But that would lump Harry into the realm of the guilty, which he was not. Day in and day out we discussed the implications: could we really remove a legend (and virtual teammate) who had grandfathered into the players' zone out of sheer respect?
The debate went painfully on, even though under normal circumstances the transgression would have almost certainly ended in harsh baseball justice. But Harry's immunity was so powerful that our manager had to step in and end the dialogue on the issue, which was rapidly becoming more of a topic of discussion than the team we were about to play. I think we had more Harry meetings than we had defensive meetings that week. Because whichever side of the matter a player came down on, no one wanted to offend or hurt Harry in any way.

QuoteA source close to Manny Ramirez(notes) said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not "an agent customarily used for performance enhancing."
At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.
Ramirez tested positive for the substance during spring training, then was administered a second test more recently, and it also was positive. Major League Baseball notified Ramirez of the second positive test after Wednesday night's Dodgers victory over the Washington Nationals. Ramirez admitted to having taken the substance and declined to appeal. His 50-game suspension begins today.
"The substance is not a steroid and it is not human-growth hormone," the source said.
Ramirez, the source said, acquired the substance through a prescription from a doctor in Miami for his medical condition. The source intimated that Ramirez might bring legal action against the physician.

When you take a performance enhancer - whether it be a pro hormone or steroids - your body dramitically slows down and even sometimes stops its natural production of testosterone due to the influx. HCG is used to get testosterone production up while keeping estrogen levels down. The reason it keeps estrogen down is because your body produces more to balance the unnatural testosterone level. After the cycle is down the estrogen level stays up which is when people get a lot of side effects like bitch tits.
This confirms it: Manny really is a c*nt.

Cycle means a rotation of doses.
Thanks. So, another question, how long is one cycle? Anyone here know?
Depends on the juice. 12 weeks is common. There's another practice called "stacking" which just means you're taking more than steroid at a time. The theory is you take a full 12 week cycle of say testosterone while at the same time you do a six week cycle of another juice. When that cycle ends you take something else for the next 6 weeks. It just depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
Rome nailed it.
I've known guys that have stayed on a cycle for 6 months to a year which is ridiculous. Steroids are seriously as addictive as Heroin.

Some MA douchebaggery from igy (and all) to check out. This is a blog by some shteinhead Brewer fan whose hobby is catching HR balls.
He caught the Marlins rookie Of's first ML HR the other night....
http://thehappyyoungster.mlblogs.com/
QuoteThe Marlins bullpen called me over and I spoke with Bullpen Coach Steve Foster. Mr. Foster informed me that the ball was Chris Coghlan's first career home run. He offered me another baseball in exchange. I respectfully declined. With over 775 career baseballs snagged, I didn't need another ball. He asked me what I was looking to get. I informed him I would like a couple of bats. Especially, one by the player who hit the ball. He told me, "oh, you are a big fan. No problem, we can do that."
I assured him that Chris Coghlan would get his home run ball.
I told him the first thing I wanted to do, before all else, was to get the baseball authenticated by major league baseball. That way, there would be no question as to the authenticity of the ball. I told him I would not give up the ball until it was authenticated.
He had no problem with this request. None whatsoever.
So, I went over to guest relations and spoke with a supervisor. I requested the on-site major league baseball authenticator. After approx. 25 minutes, an authenticator could not be located. Someone was not doing their job.
For those who do not know, every team is SUPPOSED to have two (2) authenticators present at every major league baseball game. Not just for the inevitable milestones (ie. 500th home run, 300th win, 3000th hit, etc.), but for the unexpected ones as well (ie. 1st career home run, hit for the cycle, unassisted triple play, etc.)
It was at this time, Media Relations Manager MARTY SEWELL approached me and began to discuss the swap. I told him I wanted the ball authenticated for the benefit of all parties involved. That way, there would be no question as to the authenticity of the ball. I also informed Mr. Sewell I wanted to personally present the ball to Mr. Coghlan at the end of the game for a photo opportunity. He told me to meet at the Marlins dugout at the end of the game. When we both realized the ball would not be authenticated, he stated he had no problem with me going back to my seat with the home run ball.
When I got back to my seat, Marlins TV-man CRAIG MINERVINI (the only respectful Marlins employee in this whole ordeal) was in my seat interviewing my buddy "Dino."
A few minutes later, this was the scene...
5_13_09 Marlins vs Brewers @ Miller Park 022.jpg...and this...
5_13_09 Marlins vs Brewers @ Miller Park 026.jpg...Mr. Minervini was extremely cool.
He asked me about my website. He asked me about my ballhawking career stats.
Finally, he asked me what it would take to give up the Coghlan home run ball.
For all Florida viewers to see, I handed Craig the handwritten requests I had decided on 30 minutes earlier. On those two slips of paper read the following:
1st piece of paper:
CHRIS COGHLAN GAME BAT signed-
"To Nick, thanks for catching my first home run!"
+
one (1) signed CHRIS COGHLAN ball
AND
2nd piece of paper:
HANLEY RAMIREZ GAME BAT
THE END.
Mr. Minervini then held up the two slips of paper for the camera and I held up the home run ball.
There you have it.
So, where's the confusion?? Where's the part about me being unreasonable and asking for a whole bunch of stuff from other players? Where's the part about me holding the ball for ransom?
Two bats.
Simple as that.

i didn't even know this was a rule, but joe maddon turned in an illegal lineup card by listing 2 players at 3b and as a result, they lost their DH spot for the game which forced their pitcher to hit.
QuoteThe game was delayed 13 minutes before the bottom of the first due to a lineup card error by the Rays that listed both Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria as the third baseman. Longoria was supposed to be the designated hitter, but Tampa Bay lost the DH position because of the snafu and was forced to put Sonnanstine in the third spot of the lineup.
so not only did the pitcher have to bat, but longoria was the scheduled dh and they ended up losing his bat and somehow still managed to win.
Yeah, he actually had a RBI double batting 3rd. Really weird.

Orioles release Adam Eaton (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Am9AmMnPr_W_tZL0I3EZX02FCLcF?slug=txorioleseaton&prov=st&type=lgns)
QuoteEaton gave up seven runs in 4 2-3 innings against the New York Yankees on Thursday, a performance that left him 2-5 with an 8.56 ERA. He allowed nine homers and 19 walks in 41 innings, and lasted longer than six innings only once.
"The way he pitched made this move self-evident," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "I just didn't see him being able to locate his pitches on a regular basis."
If the Orioles win the Series I doubt they'll give him a ring.
Went to the Rangers/Astros game today. We used one of our vendors club tickets and it was the first time I've ever sat in a club section where they take your order from your seat and you don't ever have to get up. Kinda cool.
Nelson Cruz crushed two balls. I asked the usher in our section where I could find Ed Wade and he said we missed his daily walk through the club boxes by about 15 minutes.
I avoided the out of town scoreboards because I was DVR'ing the Phils...I could have saved myself the time and not even watched the junk when I got home.

Burrell might need neck surgery. They said it's similar to what Derrek Lee had and it's almost like turf toe...
grienke pitched 8 innings of one run ball last night and his era went up!
greinke has been absolutely sick this year. he's always had good stuff and i figured he could pitch for just about any other team somewhere in the middle of the rotation. the entire royals pitching staff has been fairly good this year but they've got one of the worst offenses in all of baseball. maybe even the worst. too bad there's almost no way the phils could trade for him. he's not costing the royals a lot in salary and i think they've got him locked up for a couple of more years on the cheap.

orioles could be scary good in a year or 2. they've got 3 pitching prospects that are all sick, but i wouldn't expect them to do anything this year other than be a spoiler team in september for a team fighting for a wild card spot or division title.
you might be right but they are only five games out of the wc now...and wieters reimold just came up in the last two weeks
i think their youth and inexperience is what will keep them out of the post season this year. they'll probably finish the year somewhere around 5-7 games under .500, which given the last decade, would be a monumental step forward for them.
i lean that way as well especially the pitching youth but it also wouldnt surprise me in the least if their offense carried them into contention...of course im counting on wieters being the read deal right away and reimold to not hit a wall...if they dont their lineup is no farging joke 1-9

I can't see Dibble lasting more than a season as color analyst for the Nats. He bashes them every day.
It's the truth, but I can't see him lasting.
He's gotten better. His "we and us" stuff was annoying early on because he had no prior affiliation with them, but listening to him go apeshtein makes me appreciate him. He makes good points too.
Rome,
what was he saying?
Basically that St. Clare approached the job like "it's my way or the highway" and that he wasn't flexible at all in terms of handling the pitchers. Honestly, for a second I thought the words "Joe Kerrigan" were going to come out of Dibble's face because that's exactly how Kerrigan is described.
He also said that the guy who replaced St. Clare is a much better fit for the Nats because he actually groomed their younger guys in the minors and has a much better rapport with them as a result.
The main complaint the pitchers had was they had gotten to the Majors throwing the way they throw then he basically tried to square peg them all into the same sort of pitchers without regard for their individual abilities.
The rest of it was just Dibble relaying the same tired stories he tells about his time with the Reds and Jody Mac sort of agreeing with everything he said.
dibble is bad in an awesome way....to bad he has to share a booth with that abortion bob carpenter

The MLB draft starts in an hour on MLBN. Since nobody knows or cares, I'll sum it up:
-- the best college pitcher ever created goes to Washington #1, followed by 3 months of Boras bulls**t
-- the small-market teams take cheap college players
-- the Tigers will seriously overpay someone to get them to break their scholarship
-- a bunch of white kids from the southern half of the US will get picked. Most will be named Chad, Tyler, Justin, Dustin or Zack
heard today that teams cannot trade draft picks. that's a pretty stupid farging rule.
yup, but I think they're looking to include it in the next CBA, along with a slotting system for salaries like the NBA so Boras can't pull his usual crap
plus teams that sign big name free agents lose their picks, so the Phils don't pick until round 2 (since Seattle got their pick for Ibanez)
i'm guessing that's how the angels ended up with 2 first round picks then? got one from the yankees when they signed teixiera?
They got the Mets pick for K-Rod and the Yankees pick for Teixeira, then they lost their own to Colorado for Fuentes. They also got two compensatory picks between the first and second round for those losses...
A new way to lose :-D

If that list is real: all the non-roid users could have stayed on the bench at the 2003 All Star Game, and both teams still could have fielded an All-Roid side from the selected All-Star players, complete with starting and relief pitching. OK, the AL would have had to lend Garciaparra and Soriano to the NL and the NL would have had to lend Javy Lopez to the AL. But they coulda had a game.

Aaron Boone 3B

Padilla was scratched from his start Wednesday against Boston due to flulike symptoms, and lab reports Friday indicated he had H1N1 Type A influenza.
Several Rangers players have been hit with the flu this week, causing the team to delay its flight to Kansas City from Thursday to Friday morning in order to provide additional recovery time. Texas catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was scratched from Friday night's game due to the flu.
Padilla has responded well to medication and threw a bullpen session in Kansas City on Friday. He's expected to start Tuesday against Detroit.

Ricciardi shouldn't survive Halladay debacle
By Jeff Passan, Yahoo! Sports Jul 31, 5:40 pm EDT
Say you own a stock. And say somebody tells you the value of that stock is going to plummet immediately on a certain day. What do you do? You get rid of that stock. Because there is a fundamental and simple truth to success in the world of commodities: sell high.
Usually, it's a guessing game. Which makes the case of J.P. Ricciardi and his absolute murdering of the Roy Halladay(notes) trade market that much more egregious. He didn't have to speculate. He knew the value of Halladay would never be higher than it was for the past three weeks. He understood that the second the clock hit 4 p.m. ET, he would be staring at his very own Black Friday.
And do you know what he did, the Toronto Blue Jays general manager who has overseen a truly mediocre (616-619) team for nearly a decade and lavished $126 million on the underachieving Vernon Wells(notes)? Guess how he handled his chance to remake a franchise that in the cutthroat American League East dances the dance of inconsequence year after year?

He bungled the whole thing. He held when every iota of logic oozed sell. If that alone isn't a fireable offense – and it is – surely combined with the Blue Jays' performance and the Wells contract has Ricciardi earned his way to unemployment.
"We were never moved," Ricciardi said 75 minutes after the trade deadline passed, and these cases are generally shades of gray. This isn't. Consider the factors involved. The likelihood of the Blue Jays, as constituted, contending next year is minimal. Halladay said he wants to test free agency following the 2010 season no matter where he plays. A half-dozen teams were interested. Ricciardi, accordingly, could ask for a sizeable return for what amounts to two stretch runs with the most consistent pitcher in baseball.
Only he overplayed his hand, and this was no typical bluff. Ricciardi went all-in on 7-2 off-suit. The minute the asking price on Halladay from Philadelphia made the rounds – Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown and J.A. Happ(notes), or the Phillies' two best prospects and a starting pitcher with a 2.97 earned-run average in the major leagues this year – executives around baseball began to wonder: Is he serious?
"I honestly thought he was posturing," one NL executive said Friday. "I figured the price would come down."
It didn't. Ricciardi knew he had the goods, and he wanted proper value for them. But when Philadelphia moved on and acquired reigning AL Cy Young winner Cliff Lee(notes) without yielding any of the three players Ricciardi asked for, all of his leverage disappeared.
Gone were the Phillies, the perfect trading partner: great prospects, desperate need, financial wherewithal. Reality then hit: All the remaining teams came flawed.
Texas had the prospects but not the cash. The Los Angeles Dodgers had the centerpiece (Chad Billingsley(notes) or Clayton Kershaw(notes)) but wouldn't part with either. The Los Angeles Angels found the asking price of four young major leaguers a joke. Halladay may not have approved a trade to Milwaukee. And the thought that Ricciardi had a higher asking price for Boston or New York because Halladay might come back to haunt the Blue Jays – heaven forbid he wins a few games during a non-essential year, as opposed to the young players acquired actually smiting the Red Sox or Yankees when Toronto can reasonably contend – is misguided in every respect.
Or: Par for the course. Ricciardi handled the negotiations very publicly, a boon for the rumor-obsessed but, according to an executive whose team was interested in Halladay, "not good form." He left Halladay twisting and now brings him back with all kinds of ambiguity. The Blue Jays want him, but if they're overwhelmed with a deal over the winter, they'll trade him, and if not, he can come back for the first three months of the season, at which point they'll reassess, and if they're not in it, they'll probably go through this same nonsense again, only this time they'll ship him off, and for far less than they could have gotten this year.
Got that, Doc?
He's got to be smirking at it all. This has been the busiest trade deadline in years. Lee to Philadelphia. His former Cleveland teammate, Victor Martinez(notes), to Boston. The injured Jake Peavy(notes) to the Chicago White Sox. Matt Holliday(notes) to St. Louis and Jarrod Washburn(notes) to Detroit and Orlando Cabrera(notes) to Minnesota and Adam LaRoche(notes) to Boston, then Atlanta. Any Pittsburgh Pirate who didn't get traded should be embarrassed.
In that climate, Ricciardi couldn't muster up a proper Halladay deal, and it's rather reminiscent of Minnesota holding onto Johan Santana(notes) too long and watching the market for him crash. Ricciardi stuck to his valuation of Halladay even as the suitors' priorities shifted, and in some fashion, he deserves respect for never wavering. The problem is, Ricciardi did so to the detriment of the franchise he runs, and such stubbornness rarely results in success.
"Someone may look at him next year and come up and absolutely blow us away," Ricciardi said. "I can't answer that."
So the world moved on, and Ricciardi enters his lame-duck phase. Running the Blue Jays, of course, is at times untenable. He must win in a division where winning takes constant brushstrokes of brilliance. Tampa Bay last year proved it's possible, and there, perhaps, was the first gun fired in Ricciardi's 21-blast salute.
He fought his own little war, against the two big boys of the AL East, and he lost. The Blue Jays may one day be good again. They showed flashes earlier this season and have a decent core heavy on young pitching (Ricky Romero(notes), Brett Cecil(notes), Mark Rzepczynski and Scott Richmond(notes), plus the injured Dustin McGowan(notes), Shaun Marcum(notes) and Jesse Litsch(notes)) with some keeper bats (Aaron Hill(notes), Adam Lind(notes) and Travis Snider(notes)).
All of which would look much better with three or four kids as a complement. Actually, the Blue Jays did get a little younger Friday. In the minutes leading up to the deadline, Ricciardi traded third baseman Scott Rolen(notes) to Cincinnati for third baseman Edwin Encarnacion(notes) and pitchers Zach Stewart and Josh Roenicke(notes). Ricciardi turned an expensive asset into youth, and for a losing team, that's always welcome.
Amid his mismanagement of the Halladay situation, Ricciardi did some good. Just not enough to save his job.

nice job by tmz deadspin to get the photos
at least daulerio contacted the rangers before posting. hes got just shred of journalism credibility left.
the only problem with hamilton seems to be his refusal to acknowledge the fact that he's a tequilla drinking man whore. ditch the wife and the jesus loving aa meetings and he'll be my hero.
SD pulled a NB?
Did Alex Rios really just get traded to the ChiSox for nothing?
placed on waivers and wasn't pulled back, so the White Sox take on his full awful contract
looks that way. chisox paid the 20g fee to claim him off waivers. the imfamous ptnl will likely be part of the deal too.
of course, they're also stuck with his $66m price tag too.
Ricciardi for GM of the decade.
Now with Riod and Peavy they have taken on something like 120M in contracts for those two.
Rios is the guy who (look for the video on youTube) refused to sign for some kid after an 0-5 night and an adult told him he was big-shotting the kid to which Rios told him "farg you!"
Strasburg signed with Washington....$15.67M over 4 years
The ESPN hype machine seems to care about that kid approximately 100 times more than any actual human sports fan cares about him.
igy's gonna hate this but I think it's great that Washington is turning things around, even if their stadium is boring and overrun by Phils fans. He's their best pitcher already and he's never been on the field...
they are not turning things around. no one has any idea how good or bad this jew is going to be. strasburgs a jew name, right?
anyway they are trying to get better and are spending the money to do so. but in no way shape or form does this make the nats good. and the nats being good will never matter. they are in a terrible sports town and are a team that was created 2 days ago. no one will ever give a shtein about them.

you'd think that if there was one person who wouldn't need that esplained to him...
is anyone surprised that mds also sucks at being jewish?
its sickening
dc sports has LEGIT talent
ovechkin is gonna go down as a top five all time nhl player
strasberg is other worldly
they have the best defensive player in the nfl
and if arenas can get healthy hes an nba stud
orakpos potential also scares me
Wait, who are you claiming is the best defensive player in the NFL? Haynesworth? I don't know about that. But yes the teams have good players. They all still suck though, which is all that matters.
Laundry?
i think haynesworth is the best...altho i cant argue if someone said ed reed
im also open to the fact that haynesworth could suck this year since he got caked off 4 life and hopefully thats exactly what happens...but if hes putting forth maximum effort hes absolutely sick
DC will not win a title before Philly wins their next.

ha, i actually got some of these. although it seems like a great deal, i normally only pay $5 and sit in a good seat anyway.
sold out already. looks like they're gonna have more from noon to 2 on Friday
lol god i cannot wait until he blows up. its a friggin toss up if this guy is gonna be any good.
no its not
its a toss up as to whether his career gets derailed with injuries...but if hes healthy no chance he isnt a monster....this isnt kyle drabek
how much $
you wanna bet that its 50/50 whether hes good or not?
basically ill throw 20 bucks at whether or not hes a top of the line guy assuming hes healthy. i have no clue how hes going to turn out. he could be the next carlton or the next adam eaton.
so basically you get 20 if hes as advertsied. i get 20 if hes average/mediocre/bad. no one gets anything if hes mark prior and can never stay healthy.
IGY wants odds.

to much wiggle room for you to back out there...how do you determine that hes 'as advertised'
what if hes 7-10 with a 2.90 era and 200 strikeouts
and if you wanna go by top of the line hes gonna be the nats #1 pitcher almost from year one
ill pass on your awful proposal and just be content with the fact that i was right
haha
well since you did so much scouting and watched so much tape id figure you were confident in your 'analysis'
as rusty said ill give you odds or whatever if you want them
i dont need odds....if you throw out the injury factor then you should be getting odds as its a virtual lock that he will be a very good major league pitcher
i have no idea how hes going to turn out. you seem convinced based on your scouting expertise that hes gonna be the goat. put yo $ where yo mouth is stillupfront's mom

i don't get it. except for the fact that his team has a record of 9-42 in games that he's appeared in and half of his win total has come against the phils.
his team was 0-33 in his last 33 appearances before last night
i saw that very long streak of losses but didn't feel like counting them. but yeah, sucks to be him. actually, sucks to be his teammate. seeing him walk in from the pen is basically the kiss of death.
is that supposed to be a lot of losses or something
even Tyler Walker gets to pitch in a win once in a while, so yea. Plus Baltimore sucks...
before the deadline, the Dodgers got Thome and Jon Garland
i'd be worried about that if thome could still play 1st base or if garland could still pitch. looks like the dodgers are hoping that thome is this year's matt stairs.

QuoteThe Blue Jays are hoping a dispute between the U.S. and Canada over charter flights will not affect wholesale changes to an upcoming road trip.
The dispute, though, already has forced a small change for the team's trip to Detroit Sept. 10 and could cause bigger problems with an alternative flight that was booked into the Motor City.
"We're hoping they settle the ban," Jays travelling secretary Mike Shaw said. "We don't see any issues at the moment, but you have to be ready all the same."
Airline authorities in the U.S. have begun banning Canadian charter company flights between American cities.
The ban, seen as a measure of protectionism, affects Canadian charter companies, including Air Canada, which has about a half dozen planes dedicated to chartering professional sports teams.
While Canadian-based planes are admitted into U.S. air space, the problem lies with the Canadian carrier flying teams between U.S. cities.
Those flights are being banned, and unless there is a quick settlement, teams like the Jays and the Maple Leafs may have to leave the U.S. and re-enter in the case of back-to-back games against American teams.
The Canadian government has responded with a similar ban on American charters, something that has already forced the Jays to change plans with their upcoming Detroit trip.
The Jays use a U.S. charter company – Miami Air – and Shaw said Canadian authorities have nixed the team's plans to fly from Toronto to Windsor and then entering the U.S. from Windsor.
The club has since booked a flight directly into Detroit. But Shaw said if Canadian authorities balk at that flight, the team will charter a bus to get to Detroit.
And even then, the Jays will have to get approval from the Major League Baseball Players Association, which bans bus travel of more than 200 miles for the 30 major league teams.
"Fortunately, it's not very far," Shaw said.
Miami Air, which has five NHL teams and the Jays as clients, was reportedly told this week to cancel 60 in-Canada flights. Most of those flights affect NHL pre-season travel for U.S.-based NHL teams.
Shaw said the Blue Jays' contract with Miami Air runs out at the end of this season, and the club is looking at several charter companies in its search for a carrier for next year.
Talks are ongoing between Canadian and American authorities, but Shaw said if the dispute carries on into next season, the Jays will likely bus to Buffalo and fly to their U.S. destinations from there.

QuoteOther matters of note, one for each of the Pirates' 17 consecutive losing seasons:
1. Number of Pirates elected as a starter for the National League All-Star team since 1993: 1. Jason Bay(notes), in 2006.
2. Number of Pirates who have been drafted and become an All-Star since 1993: 0.
3. Number of Pirates to hit .300 or better, with enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title: 9. Freddy Sanchez(notes) led the league with a .344 average in 206. Jason Kendall(notes) did it four times. All nine players were traded: Sanchez, Kendall, Bay, Jack Wilson(notes), Aramis Ramirez(notes), Brian Giles(notes), Al Martin, Jay Bell and Orlando Merced.
4. Number of Pirates with at least 100 plate appearances to hit under the Mendoza Line (.200 batting average): 17. Mike Benjamin batted .150 in 2002, with 18 hits in 120 at-bats, zero home runs and three RBIs. In both 1997 and 1998, the Pirates had three hitters with averages under .200. That included infielder Kevin Polcovich, who was given 238 plate appearances in 1998 and batted .189.
5. Number of Pirates to hit 30 or more home runs in a season: 5. They all were traded – Bay, Reggie Sanders(notes), Brian Giles (he and Bay were traded for each other before Bay was dealt to Boston), Ramirez, and Jeff King.
6. Number of Pirates to lead the league in errors: 1. Third baseman Ed Sprague made 29 errors in 1999, finishing in a tie with Adrian Beltre(notes) of the Dodgers. Aramis Ramirez led the league in 2003 but was traded midseason to the Cubs.
7. Number of Pirates to win Gold Gloves: 2. Outfielder Nate McLouth(notes) won in 2008, shortstop Bell in 1993. And yes, they both were traded.
8. Number of Pirates pitchers to win 15 or more games in a season: 1. Todd Ritchie won 15 in 1999, then won a total of 26 over the next five seasons, spent with the Pirates and three other teams.
9. Number of Pirates pitchers to lose 15 or more games in a season: 9. Kip Wells(notes) was the biggest loser, going 8-18 in 2005.
10. Number of Pirates pitchers with an ERA of 3.00 or less (among qualifiers): 1. Oliver Perez(notes) had a 2.98 ERA as a 22-year-old lefty in 2004. He was traded to the Mets.
11. Number of Pirates pitchers with an ERA over 5.00: 9. Bob Walk had the highest, 5.68 in 1993.
12. Most games over .500 by any Pirates team in the last 17 seasons: 7, in 2002.
13. Most games under .500 by any Pirates team in the last 17 seasons: 40, in 2001. In eight other seasons, the Pirates finished 25 or more games under .500.
14. Number of seasons in which a Pirates team did not spend a single day over .500 or in first place: 5. An additional six teams were never more than three games over .500 an entire season.
15. Number of first-round draft choices between 1993 and 2005: 15. Number of first-round draft choices to make it as a big league regular: 3. Two are pitchers, Kris Benson(notes) and Paul Maholm(notes). The third is rookie outfielder Andrew McCutchen(notes). There have been 12 first-round busts. The jury is still out on Maholm, a middling left-hander, and McCutchen, who looks like a budding star. Benson, the No. 1 overall pick in 1996, is an undistinguished 69-74 and was outrighted this year by the Texas Rangers.
16. The worst draft? So many to choose from, but none of the Pirates' first 16 picks in 1998 played an inning in the big leagues.
17. Most losses by five or more runs in a season: 36, in 2001. Eight other times, they lost 25 or more games by at least five runs.
I've been told that Tim Wakefield is the only remaining active player in MLB who was a member of a Pirates team with a winning record.
Sounds about right.
And at least they can be given credit for moving him to pitcher from a 1B when he sucked as a regular player

13 major league players have had 3000 hits with one team....name them without googling
Rose, Cobb, Ripken, Gwynn, Brett, Yount
good so far
no yankee has ever done it which amazed me...altho three (winfield - rickey - boggs) have 3000 and played for them
also its incredible how few great pitchers the yankees have had for as good as theyve been
like pettite might be their second best pitcher of all time
what about Aaron and Mays?
yes and yes
four more what i would consider easy ones and two toughies
Clemente
Musial
Ted Williams
shtein, I feel like I should be able to get the last one...
Never mind there are actually 3 left.
Clemente got exactly 3000
Stan Musial put up ridiculous stats for the Cards for like 25 years so I'd guess him.
Damn rjs beat me.
Williams missed 3 years because of the war, so I don't think he got there
Huh, you're right.
yeah no williams
four left
two i would have never gotten....one of which i didnt even remember having 3000 at all until i saw his name
Gonna guess Yaz, he was parked there on the Sox way longer than even Williams I think.
didn't biggio get to 3000 in the last few years?
paul molitor, robin yount
Frank Robinson played for two teams. So did Carew... so I'm guessing not either of them.
Molitor played for the Jays at the end of his career so I'm guessing it's not him.
It's pretty much either gotta be a power guy who sat on a team for 25 years or someone with crazy hitting statistics who lasted at least like 16, 17...
Biggio... eh he's up there. If he got to 3000 I have no memory of that whatsoever.
yes yaz...yes yount but mentioned...no molitor
biggio to me was the hardest...even tho its the most recent...i would have never gotten him
two left
one blatant one really tough
Is it 13 or 14? We got 12...
its 13...i must have missed one...someone said ripken im assuming?
which leaves the real tough one
yeah i just looked it up and i actually thought he was a pitcher.
ha
detroit tiger - 3007 hits
Kaline
FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
babe ruth
No Honus Wagner?
Just looked it up, he had 2967 for the Pirates. So close.
So, will Jeter and Suzuki be on that list one day?
jeter has 2721 hits, so he'll likely be joining that list in 2011. it's not even a question of if he'll be a yankee when it happens because he will not play for another team in his career.
ichiro only has 2001 hits but if he plays another 5 years, and plays them all with the mariners, then he could do it. but i doubt he will. he's already 35 and you've got to figure that if he does stick around 5 more years, he's not going to be legging out as many infield singles.
QuoteApparently, according to the post, Manny has no idea who Jim Thome is. Never mind the fact that Thome and Manny were teammates for 10 years in Cleveland.
Conjuring the famous and debunked story about Rickey Henderson and John Olerud in which Rickey was said to explain to Olerud when both players were on the Mariners that he once was teammates with a guy who wore a helmet in the field with the Mets.
"Yeah, that was me, Rickey," Olerud said in the myth.
So now we have Manny, who according to the author of Diamond Hoggers, just couldn't figure out who the hell some guy named Jim Thome was.
To wit:
This comes from a guy we know who works in the Dodgers organization. He wrote us an e-mail because he thought the story would please us. He was right.
Hey fellas,Hope all is well. Had a story for you that you might find kind of funny and that might go well on your site. Just leave my name out of it. So here goes:
Alright so we all know that Jim Thome was traded to the Dodgers at the end of August, reuniting him with Ramirez after all those years in Cleveland. That's all fine and dandy and all, but get this..... hours before the trade is made official news to the media one of the clubhouse coaches goes over to Manny and says "hey we're bringing Jim Thome back here to play with you". Ramirez looks at him, stares off into the distance for a few minutes. Our coach starts to realize that either Manny isn't happy or he's got no ****ing clue what is going on. Our coach couldn't believe it was that though, since they played together for almost 10 years in Cleveland. Finally our coach says "Manny aren't you happy about Jim coming to LA?"
Ramirez looks him dead in the eye and says "I've never played with anyone named Jim." Gets up, and walks away. No [bleep]. Our coach left it at that.
Wonder if that coach is a certain ex-Phillies manager?
Nevertheless, add this to the absent-minded legend that is Manny Ramirez. Or add it to the pile of Manny stories that Manuel likes to tell from their days in the Indians' organization. Apparently, it wasn't uncommon for Manny to show up at the ballpark with no money to pay for a taxi, no suitcase for a road trip or equipment.
Call him Manny Gump – the baseball hitting savant.
Or just call this episode a case of Manny being Rickey.
so good...

QuoteNo. 2 Shane Victorino, Phillies
This guy is amazing. He was an integral player on last year's World Championship Phillies team. This guy does it all; he sprints down the line, he takes great routes, hustles in the outfield, and can lay down a bunt. If you want a championship team, you need at least one player like Victorino on the roster.
My team of nine guys who hit like Albert Pujols and never ever bunt just beat your team with one Shane Victorino 472 to 3.
lolz

who gets the al cy young award? wainwright all but has it wrapped up in the nl.
al candidates: cc, greinke, verlander, halladay, weaver, beckett, f hernandez
other than wins, greinke pretty much has the best stat line of any other starting pitcher in the al. he has the most shutouts, the lowest era and is top 5 in k's. when voting for the cy young, is it strictly the best pitcher or do you think it needs to be someone from a winning/playoff team?
is it fair to count teams wins against a pitcher when he only has an effect on the game every 5 days?
if i had a vote, i'd probably vote greinke. dude has been sick all year. he's even racked up a couple cg losses this year so you can't really put the losses on him. he just happens to play for one of the worst teams in baseball that can't score runs for ish.
Quote''I'm only going to say two things,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said after another collapse. ''I'm tired and I don't have anything ... it was 2½ hours of satisfaction and then 2½ hours of horse (crap) baseball. Go and ask them. I don't have any more quotes, seriously. What the (expletive) am I going to say? (Are) they horse (crap)? Yes, they are.''
Guillen then walked into the clubhouse and made a loud point of saying there would be a lot of lineup changes for today's series opener against Kansas City, and, ''If they give up on me, I give up on them.''

cubs suspend milton bradley for the rest of the season.
this guy is probably the closest thing baseball has to t.o. but not as dominant.
http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=4496640
so apparently, the reason milton bradley has been so bad this year and said mean things about the cubs and their fans is because his 3 year old kid gets treated like shtein in pre-school.
QuoteAccording to his mother, Bradley's unhappiness in Chicago stems in part from racism that his 3-year-old son has faced at school.

Yeah, I totally believe that parents, teachers and kids were n-bombing the little kid. Come on, Milton.
Detroit is choking like the Mets. Up 7 games three weeks ago, their lead is down to 1 after losing today and they might be tied after tonight...
some guy just called about this on WIP, but it was Mike Blowers, a mariner's color guy. he was just messing around pre-game and predicted the exact details of a rookie's first home run that game. pretty awesome.

That's his brother, and so is the fullback who was on the Eagles practice squad a couple years back.
Colorado clinches the last NL playoff spot and is 2 games back of the Dodgers. They'll face off in LA this weekend for the division title...
Detroit and Minnesota split their 4-game series, so the Tigers are still 2 up with 3 to play...
Dodgers are going to lose the division, home field advantage, and get swept in the division series.
Bring on the Lakers. :boom :'( :boom :'( :boom :'( :( :(
i really hate that they now have 2 of my favorite players, kobe and artest. bastiches
Isn't that his brother? Manu Tuiasasopo ,the dad played NG for Seahawks. Kid looks like a player. Totally forgot about the other brother and his brief stint with the birds.
DET's lead is down to one game.
I hope Minnesota catches them. Delmon Young had a GS tonight. While suffering insomnia last night I caught a special they had on MLB Network on the Young brothers (Dmitri & Delmon) and it was pretty damn good.
I was shocked at how many empty seats there were in Detroit tonight. Same in Denver yesterday. They showed the players out on the field after they clinched a playoff spot and no one was around.
Just heard the Dodgers had their tenth sellout of the year tonight. How pathetic. Must have been bring your switchblade get a friend in free night.
SI did a piece on Detroit baseball last week and how fans were turning out for the games. But in that economy up there, I can understand them not wanting to spend the cash to go to the ballpark.
Colorado fans are bandwagoners, like many baseball cities.
LA fans are nothing more than an extension of either Hollywood people looking for status bumps or the California Penal System.
I did give the Detroit crowd a pass as I know the economy is just the shteins up there. Colorado, ahhh, Dodger fans, farg um'.

Not that it matters in this discussion, but I still love Detroit's home uniform and think its the best in the big leagues right now.
Things could get interesting tomorrow in that race. DET is starting a rookie but MIN has to face Greinke. If the Twins can eek out a win against him and the ChiSox paste the rook, it comes down to Verlander on Sunday for Detroit.
i was reading an article in the waspo last week about how just last month the last grocery store closed in detroit....literally the only places you can shop now are at corner markets
Detroit is 12th in the Majors in attendance at 31,597 per game.
Yep - things sure are awful in Detroit.
best sports cities in the US
1. philly
2. detroit
thats it thats the list
The worst economic conditions in 75 years, yet... the Pistons led the league in average attendance, you can't usually even buy a ticket to a Red Wings game, and even the Lions (the LIONS! :-D) occasionally sell out.
wow you really are attempting to downplay the lack of economy in detroit......good job
QuoteBlue Jays fire GM Ricciardi

ESPN.com news services
TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays fired general manager J.P. Ricciardi on Saturday, ending an eight-year tenure marked by an inability to get past the Yankees and Red Sox and into the playoffs.
"This was a tough decision and a difficult one for me personally as I have enjoyed J.P.'s friendship and his perspective on the game," said Paul Beeston, Toronto's acting president and CEO.
"J.P. has put an incredible amount of effort into improving the team and he has brought along a number of great young players," Beeston said. "However, I feel that it is time for a change and accordingly we have decided to move on."
Alexander Anthopoulos, the team's vice president of baseball operations and assistant GM, has been named Ricciardi's replacement, the Blue Jays said in a release announcing the change.
Ricciardi, who was also senior vice president of baseball operations, joined the Jays in 2001 and had one year left on his contract. The team posted four winning seasons and four losing ones under Ricciardi, never making the playoffs in an AL East dominated by New York and Boston.
Ricciardi was criticized for poor free agent signings and off-field missteps that overshadowed some productive drafts and other good moves.
The Blue Jays (75-85) are finishing out their regular season in Baltimore.
Ricciardi's firing comes on the heels of news of locker-room unrest with manager Cito Gaston.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
I'm shocked it took this long to fire him

Yeah I still live in the Detroit area for the time being until I move back to PA at the end of the year, and this story has only really surfaced last night after being buried for two days. Gee, wonder why. He actually lives in a pretty unassuming house (for a guy that makes 20 mil a year0 in Birmingham, which is about 2 miles up the road from where I live, and the Birmingham police concluded that it was a "mutual conflict" and that they didn't feel charges were necessary.
If the Tigers lose their one game playoff today I'm sure the department will "re-assess" their initial conclusion.
Rome, the Redwings cant sell out a game to save their lives, if you have center ice, take a look at how empty the Joe is. They couldnt sell out playoff games last year. The area around the Joe has been equated to 1984 Beirut, and the economy is about same as Beirut's

The Joe and the area around there (Cobo Center, Ren Cen where GM has its headquarters) isn't that bad. My school was right down the street from there. Actually, the downtown area has potential with Ford Field and Comerica plus Greektown (and its Casino) and the MGM Grand being a few "people mover" stops away. Plus, Wayne State is a college in downtown/midtown Detroit that actually has a decent campus with a few museums and other attractions.
The problems occur once you start to distance yourself from the downtown area. I regularly drove up and down Gratiot in Detroit and all you see is abandoned buildings, unkempt properties, etc. Not the greatest of conditions.
The Wings are big here, probably the most popular team. I think generally Detroit (and its suburbs, obviously) have good, solid sports fans, but they aren't as passionate as Philly fans so you don't see on the news a lot of really in-depth reports and/or commentary on the sports scene.

What an amazing game. Good to see DET complete the choke.
You're not alone, Mets fans. :-D
the mets spit on detroits choke
7 with 17 >>>> 7 with 26
Ha - for real. The Tigers didn't really even choke. The Twins won like 17 out of the last 20 just to tie them.
Still a choke job. You have to hold a 7-game lead in September.
Yeah, plus no team has ever blown a 3 game lead with 4 to play, so they made history there too. Not to mention they had so many chances in the tiebreaker game to take a lead and couldn't get a run across the plate.
And it doesn't help when your best player is probably nursing an extreme hangover in a game where if you win you can still win outright and not have to worry about a one-game playoff.

That's what he gets for never touching home plate.
You can take a player off the Mets, but you can't take the Mets out of a player...
Carlos Gomez = douchebag.
Minny has runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. A single to RF. Delmon Young is truckin' home and Gomez rounds second too far, Swisher throws behind him and he's tagged out before Young crosses the plate.
Chip Caray = awful.
ARod just singled to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th. Coming back after a pitching change he says "ARod with a Reggie Jackson like moment".
Really? A one run single in the 6th inning of game two of the division series is a Jacksonesque moment?!
i think it just means that he produced at a big moment in october. don't read too much into it.
Wow...Joe Nathan channels his inner Brad Lidge and gave it up to ARod.
That, Chip Caray, was a Reggie Jackson moment.
COME ON TWINS!!!
What a horrible call by the umpire! That ball was fair by a foot.
I'm disappointed that A-Rod isn't living up to his "Mr. May" nickname.
So am I. I wanted to see him choke and be eaten alive by the NY media.
Phil Cuzzi...YOU'RE FIRED.
How in the hell do you miss that call?! HOW?! You are ten farging feet from the ball with your eyes right on the line and you miss it?
I can forgive him for missing it nick Cabrera's glove because his eyes were on the line. But goddamn. Absolutely horrendous.
And the Twins ABs with them loaded an no outs? Goddamn terrible by Young and Gomez.
This Sox-Angels game is another good one too.
This post season has pretty much been awesome. All close games. I love baseball.
But I don't love the MLB whores ruining it for TV scheduling and ratings. Nor do I love the umpiring. There have been a lot of blown calls. Hell, that schmuck CB Bucknor blew two at 1B the other night in Anaheim.
I still can't believe that douchebag Cuzzi blew that call. I have to honestly wonder if he bet on the game.
Lol phreak you be on a stillupfront's mom roll 2nbite boiiiiii
I'm shocked that the umpires actually admitted fault. Tim Tschida was saying how it was the wrong call and all of that at a PC. Usually they will not admit fault.
Solid showing by the Angels again. Goodbye, Boston.
Yankees-Angels ALCS barring a miracle comeback by the Twins. But without Morneau and the way their pitching is, I can't see them making a charge. And Nathan has been shaky for a few games now.
I love how the Angels play. NL baseball in the AL. They ran all over Boston (Abreu was a big factor tonight) and executed the hit and run beautifully.
lol at Dennis Eckersly trying to stick up for Cuzzi. Give it up, Eck. And get a farging haircut.
eck hasn't changed his due since the 70's.
i'm a bit suprised that the angels are up 2-0. boston has been owning them lately. then again, the dodgers haven't been able to beat the cards in like 2 or 3 years and they're up 2-0 as well.
I bet if you followed Eck to the parking lot you'd see him hop into a Camaro and slam an Air Supply 8-track into the dash and peel out.
I'm glad the Angels are looking like they will finally beat the Boston Hoydas. They have a lot of players who I love watching play...Torii Hunter, Vlad Guerrero, Bobby A, Chone Figgins (who is a free agent...YO RUBEN, I'M LOOKING AT YOU)...

Oh, that's right... there's no such thing as a clutch hit.
:-D
farg abreu, i'd like nothing more than to see his face as the phils celebrate ther repeat and wave hi to him.
why
he was a good player and never did anything that could make anyone hate him. except being from Venezuela
he was part of the bleeding nancy mentality that held us back. notice what happened after he was sent packing ? notice how the current right fielder actually attempts to make plays that call for some effort ?
he was really good. his personality is roughly the same as pedro felizs. just because hes better doesnt mean he needs to be what you think a 3 hitter should be. simply look at the results he put up.
and yes, he was a Hoyda in rf. but ryan howard cant make the throw from 1st to 2nd and no one complains because he hits 50 homers a year.
I never understood the Abreu hate either. The guy was a really, REALLY good player on a zesty team.

unlike abreu feliz makes plays in the field and you can take bobby's transperant batting stats and stick 'em. again, what has happened since he and the other skirts left ? you can't argue the results since.
oh and what in the world do you mean nobody complains about howard's fielding ? have you listened to a sports talk station in the last three years ? he's been torched about his piss poor fielding until this year and rightfully so.
lol at comparing howard & abreu in any way, shape or form.
abreu was exactly the sort of laid-back clown the phillies needed to get rid of before they could win anything. i don't care what the seamheads of the world say... you need guts and balls as well as athletic ability to play baseball and although abreu had one out of three of those qualities, the almost total absence of the other two made him all but useless especially in a town like philly.
do not listen to 610. and not everyone is albert pujols. players have flaws, but you take the good with the bad. abreu got on base 40% of the time, knocked in 100 runs, scored 100 runs, stole 20 bases, hit 20/30 homers...you take that and give up the fact that he was afraid of walls and misjudged balls sometimes. just like you take howards crappy fielding cause he goes 45/130 every year.
feliz is one of the worst offensive third basemen in baseball. he can field well. doesnt really even out.
also who are the skirts? they were never really good enough when he was in his prime here.
how'd his "results" work out in new york ? 8)
btw - i feel dirty in a way for this opinion on abreu as it's mirrors that of burger king.
mds - the phils got rid of players like leiberthal, rolen and abreu. all considered our top players and they all deserved to be called that, but all were babies in some sort of way be it not being willing to give up the body to make a play or whineing about a coach actually expecting something of them besides the pretty stats.
again i ask you, what has happened since ? tell me the team's stats since they all left especially the one from last october ... 8)
he's gotta be playing the munson card, dude. mds isn't this stupid.
i dont understand this argument.
abreu was a good player. i dont understand the hate. hes not rolen. hes not jd drew. he left because they were out of the playoff race and wanted to drop salary.
obtusity is sexy.
He put up decent stats but he'll always be part of that group with Lieberthal, Bowa, Thome, Wolf, Padilla and Wagner that couldn't get the Phils to the playoffs (and if it wasn't for last season, you could've thrown Burrell, Rollins and Myers in there too).
They made the playoffs in 2007 as well, Ed. And not only that, the moment Abreu left the Phillies made a charge to get into the playoffs in 2006. Now, that might be coincidental or it might have to do more with Utley and Howard becoming the leaders of the team, who knows.
Abreu was part of the problem and the sort of revisionist thinking going on where he's concerned is silly.
Getting on base and hitting homeruns wins baseball games. Being miss congeniality does not. The only reason people value shtein like that is because while they may not have the talent to play baseball they see themselves as having these qualities so they MUST be important.
It's a pretty cool/annoying pysch thing.
abreu was a good player for the phils. just like rolen and lieberthal. but they were all a bunch of whiney bitches who didn't have a winning mentality and couldn't bring one into the clubhouse. rolen and abreu have gone on to play for winning ball clubs and not be a detriment, but it's easy to fall in line when you go to a club that's used to winning. none of those guys had what it took to help change the losing culture in the phils clubhouse or on the field. it wasn't until those guys were shipped off and some new, younger, hungier players were brought in that this team took a turn for the better.
or maybe those teams werent any good. im pretty sure the top of the rotation was job lieber and cory lidle. so no wonder they didnt win anything.
Bingo.
By the way, it was figured out that the post oc ergo propter hoc type of thinking was a logical fallacy 5,000 years ago Romey and other random idiot dude.
Get with the times man.
actually, they were decent teams and were in the playoff race in september almost every year between 2000-2006. they weren't world series caliber teams but they were playoff caliber.....or at least they would/could have been if the so called "leaders" of the team were a bunch of bitch made mental midget hoydas.
Yea I'm pretty sure that's not it.
Those teams weren't good. In 03 rheal cormier was the best reliever. In 05 they had a mediocre at best rotation.
Blaming their shortcomings on abreu not being your definition of a leader is silly
I never understood the massive amounts of Abreu hate either. I was and still am a Bobby A fan. He needed to go and Giillick got robbed in the deal, but it was a money dump and ol' Pat certainly made up for that trade.
don't get me wrong, i was/still am a bobby a fan too. but he didn't bring much to the table outside of his bat. abreu wasn't "the" problem but he definitely wasn't part of the solution either. he fits in much better with a team like the yanks or angels because no one is looking to him for anything other than to get on base and drive in runs.
but on the phillies he was the king.
yes, the soft spoken broken english speaking rightfielder was the one true leader.
lol at the seamhead dropping latin on me.

Abreu's average in the ALCS:

That's ZERO FOR NINE.
:-D
gritty utley is 1-8 with no rbi
Chone Figgins was 0-for the playoffs until he broke the tie in extra's last night.
Utley also has one of these:

lol 2 0-for games and hes awful.
really? youre starting this again?
not at all...just shocked that someone that gritty could be so bad in the playoffs....this is the time of year grit shows most
Without the fielding mistakes no one is complaining about him at the plate. It's the combination that makes him stick out as sucking so far this series.

Mo spittin all over the ball.
wow, talk about not even tryign to hide what he was doing
Another illustration of how horrible umpiring has been:
Yankees have Posada on 3rd and Cano on 2nd. Batter hits the ball to the pitcher and he throws home because Posada inexplicably took off (he had a lot of brain farts tonight) for home. Napoli runs Posada back to 3rd and Cano is standing there about a step off the bag on the SS side.
Posada overruns the bag and Napoli tags Cano who is clearly a foot off the base and tags Posada. Should be a double play, right?
Tim McClelland calls Cano safe and Posada out. How do you miss that?
Oh, and he called Swisher out for leaving early from 3rd on a tag and he wasn't even watching him.
Looks like its gonna be a Yankees-Phillies WS.
mccarver is such a Hoyda. didnt once blast the umpiring for being awful. either did buck. they said yea thats the wrong call but never called out this god awful umpiring.
farging mccarver might be the worst announcer in sports. "the dodgers were leading after getting 26 outs, but you need 27 in a baseball game." really? thanks, dingus.
a-roid is just as hot, if not hotter than howard is right now. he's homered in 3 straight games, has 5 hr in 7 playoff games this year and has at least 1 rbi in his last 8 playoff games overall, which ties him with howard and gehrig for the record. like him or hate him, he's certainly excersizing his postseason demons this year.
Give him time, Sassy. He'll gag it away sooner or later.
no way you pull lackey there
his curve was still smoking

I have to say that I chuckle a little bit every time they say the umps name and it's Randy Marsh.

The only way this would cause CC to miss game one is if it goes 7 and he if game 7 was on sunday he still would have missed game 1 anyway. I don't think this really effects the World Series one way or the other.
the difference is now if it goes seven cc doesnt even pitch in game two

QuoteThe Braves did not take long to find a new closer.
Billy Wagner could solve the Braves' closer situation. (Jim McIsaac / Getty Images)
The team reached preliminary agreement Tuesday with free-agent left-hander Billy Wagner on a one-year, $7 million contract with a vesting option for a second season, according to a major-league source.
The deal will become official once Wagner passes a physical, which he will take in Atlanta on Wednesday. The vesting option, worth $6.5 million, will become guaranteed if Wagner finishes 50 games next season.
Wagner, 38, would become the most significant player to change teams this offseason. He made a strong and rapid recovery from Tommy John surgery last season, working a pair of scoreless innings after returning to the Mets, then posting a 1.98 ERA in 13 appearances after getting traded to the Red Sox and serving in a setup role.
His return to closing with the Braves would give him a chance to earn the 40 saves he needs to pass John Franco for the all-time record among left-handed pitchers.
The Red Sox offered salary arbitration Tuesday to Wagner, a Type A free agent. If Wagner passes his physical, the Sox will receive the Braves' first-round pick next season — the 20th overall — plus a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds. Their selection from the Braves could drop to a second rounder if Atlanta signs a higher-ranking Type A free agent, but that is unlikely.
The Braves offered salary arbitration Tuesday to their own Type A free- agent relievers, left-hander Mike Gonzalez and righty Rafael Soriano. Either or both could accept one-year, non-guaranteed contracts, but both are drawing strong multi-year interest from other clubs, sources say.
The loss of either Gonzalez or Soriano would enable the Braves to recover the picks they would lose for signing Wagner. The losses of both would leave them with two additional picks.
$7M and two draft picks?! Bwahaa
one pick (the supplemental one is added, not taken), but they'll be getting four picks back when Soriano and Gonzalez sign elsewhere...
angels offered chone figgens arbitration
looks like figgens is close to sign with the mariners in the vicinity of 4yr/30+mil. he was my preference but i can't say that i'd want to see the phils paying him that much. if those numbers hold up then it makes the polanco deal look even better.

figgins at 4 for 30 >>>>>>>>>> placido at 3 18
just talking in terms of available cash flow the phils would have to address other needs. it's a reasonable price for figgens but they have too many other needs that they could be spending that money on.
i guess you could say it's quantity vs quality. phils went with quantity and i don't really blame them for it.
i have no idea what youre talking about interms of quality vs quantity
one contract is a little over 7 mil per year the other is 6 mil per year
unless youre really concerned with what happens in 2013 how could not possibly thing figgins was the much better deal
it's actually close to 9mil/year for figgens because i think i read 4yr/34mil.....not positive, i sawit this morning and posted a couple hours afterwards, thus 30+mil.
it's still not a horrible contract and maybe you think it's still worth it, but i think i'd rather see polanco @ 6mil and use the rest on other needs.
9 mil would be 36 mil for four
but even if its a little higher than the 4 for 30+ its still not even close to what the better deal is
i mean if the phils are that tight for money that two million bucks is a problem then they had no chance anyway and should have went with pete for one or two mil for one year
aint the $ its the length. they didnt want to commit more than 2/3 years for a 30+ 3b. polanco probably has a buyout for yr 3 so it really could be a two year deal.
It's 4/36 with a vesting option that would make it 9/45.
No thanks.
Quote from: Rome on December 04, 2009, 10:30:37 PM

why?
because polanco at 2/3 the price is a better deal.
if youre looking in the future maybe...but beyond 2011 the phils have an iffy future at best
im just wondering what the concern is in 2012 to 2014
I just prefer Polanco as a player. He's a prototypical #2 hitter and he's been doing it for years. He's got a good glove regardless of where you put him and you get him at roughly 2/3 the price of Figgins.
It's a no-brainer.
5/$45M + lose your 1st-rd pick
or
3/$18M + no 1st-rd pick lost + more money left to go after pitching

I've been trying to figure out why DET would make this deal all day - I don't understand it. Are they going cheap? I talked to a guy outside of Detroit today for something at work and he was pissed off.

they're looking to cut payroll. They already let Polanco walk, and it looks like Washburn, Rodney and Lyon are leaving too...
i don't get the trade either....except for the yanks. granderson is a damn good player.
lol. i forget where i read/heard it. it's been a few day. but the yanks cutting payroll doesn't mean that they still aren't going to spend more than any other team in baseball. it just means the margin they outspend everyone else by isn't quite as much.
Detroit was having trouble selling out games during a division race, plus they have a lot of money tied up in their older players that they simply can't move. Sucks for them because Granderson probably didn't reach his potential yet and is coming off a sub-par year where he's probably looking to improve. But Detroit went all in during the '08 season with the Cabrera trade and substantially increased their payroll and with that not working it's time for them to rebuild.

QuoteCruz-Diez's pavement design will be colorful and directional, meaning they will help navigate fans from the parking lots to the ballpark.
"Cruz-Diez proposed a paving pattern for the walkways that crisscross the plaza. His work is very geometric, and optical-illusionist kind of work," Spring said. "So the pattern that Cruz-Diez has proposed is very distinctive. It's a really wonderful, beautiful colorful treatment of the plaza. But at the same time, it has a practical purpose, as well."
Expanding the artwork to the Super Columns, Arsham has come up with a illusion that promises to have people wondering if they are seeing things.
"Daniel's idea was to light the columns in a way where the light gradually comes up and crawls up the columns, so the illusion from a distance is the columns will appear and disappear," Spring said. "In Daniel's words, it's almost as though the building is breathing, and the columns are appearing and disappearing with each and every inhale and exhale. It's very dramatic."
Arsham's second project hits close to home for the up-and-coming artist. As a child, he attended Miami Dolphins and University of Miami football games at the Orange Bowl. What stood out to him was the actual lettering of Orange Bowl on the building.
To commemorate the grounds, Arsham has decided to replicate the lettering on the former football stadium.
"His take was the letters fell off the side of the stadium, and embedded themselves on the east side of the plaza of the new ballpark," Spring said. "Essentially, you have full-scale letters, spelling Orange Bowl that are scattered across the eastern plaza of the building."
The letters actually are on the ground. Some are embedded in the staircases. The way they're stationed, the letters can spell out different words. They can spell ORANGE BOWL or GAME or WON, depending on where people are standing.
"Together, these three artists are good representatives of our community," Spring said. "What they've designed really enliven the ballpark and make it something that will be distinguished by both baseball and art."

Mets playing Bobby Bonilla 1.9mm this year thru 2035 (http://phourforphour.wordpress.com/2010/01/21/remember-bobby-bonilla-the-mets-do/)
Also, Carlton Fisk just obliterated Mcgwire in the press. (http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/20/fisk-takes-aim-at-mcgwire/)
i read the fisk comments yesterday or the day before. yeah, him and jack clark have both been about as blunt about it as i've ever heard anyone when talking about steriods. good for them. and farg mcgwire and every other pos that's juiced.
i was just reading an article this morning in an old baseball magazine i have from 2002 that was talking about canseco (he had just retired from baseball) and how his numbers later in his career (and many other players) were aided by recent expansion in baseball. the whistle's been blown on steriods now for so long that i actually forgot that for probably about 5 years or so, people were pointing to expansion as the reason why home run numbers in baseball were going through the roof. i always knew that was a bs reason.
Lost in all of the controversy is this: the scientific case that steroid use increases home run production is shaky. People just seem to be assuming that steroids = more home runs, because big guys hit balls hard. There have been a few small scientific papers that tried to figure it out, and they've come up with differing conclusions. There hasn't been any conclusive answer. Raw strength and muscle mass are not really the key to home runs, as you can see by all of the home runs hit by the twiggier players. Most players are capable of swinging the bat quickly enough to hit a home run. Good vision, reflexes, and timing are far bigger factors. To the extent that muscles are necessary, you want fast-twitch muscles for rapid bat acceleration, not weighty bodybuilding muscles. Guys like Ruth, Williams, and Aaron were not close to the strongest guys to ever play baseball, and didn't even have access to the basic knowledge of modern ("legitimate") strength training.
Where there is no dispute is that steroid usage helps shorten recovery time. But is this really any more of a performance enhancer than amphetamines, used by dozens of Hall of Fame players, almost certainly including Carlton Fisk? Amphetamines have only been banned from baseball since 2006, but like with steroids, using them without a prescription has been illegal for a long time. And if it's being against the rules of baseball that matters instead of merely being a performance enhancer, why are spitball hurlers, bat corkers, and signal stealers in the Hall? Or do we think none of those guys are in there?
I'm not saying that steroids shouldn't be banned, or even that we should ignore the players that used them. But the media fairytale... the game was pure and then the black scourge of steroids made everyone capable of inhuman feats for ten or fifteen horrible years that are now over, thanks to testing... is a crock in many ways. It will be interesting to see how the game responds to designer drugs, performance-enhancing surgery, cybernetics, and eventually nanotechnology in the future. Sports will never be free of performance enhancement ever again, get used to it.
players are gleefully afforded the hardest narcotics known to science to dull the pain of injury and aid in treatment and recovery, yet those who use pharmaceuticals to increase body mass are treated as cheating pariahs.
gotta love the unabashed hypocrisy there.
i agree with pretty much everything you said, especially the part about how players have always found a way to cheat the game over the years, be it by corking the bat, scuffing a ball, too much pine tar, etc, etc. i guess the way that people view those acts as opposed to steroids is that when those players got caught, there was no denying it. either your bat was corked or it wasn't. either you were putting a foreign substance on the ball or you weren't. and more often than not, i have to believe that players who did that were caught rather quickly. players/managers/umps can call for the ball or bat to be inspected pretty much whenever they chose to. and the ones who were caught were ejected immediately. not to mention that at least during more recent times....say from the 40's or 50's to now, there aren't any suspicions out there of players who played with a corked bat the majority of their career. can't say the same for the roid users. and i guess that's the main difference (if you choose to look at them differently)....corked bats and pine tar and snot balls were typically used in the short term. maybe to get an edge on a specific hitter or to bust out of a slump. where we know that players have been juicing for extended portions, if not the majority of their careers.

this is where i personally look at the roids as cheating the game. a guy pulls a hamstring or strains his pitching arm and rather than getting put on the 15 day dl (or longer) takes some roids and is back on the field after missing only a couple of games, giving him more ab's, more innings pitched, etc...thus, increasing their stat totals.
take a guy like bonds or mcgwire for example. both of them had some injury problems earlier in their careers and then all of sudden they were playing damn near 162 games every year. for guys who were that talented, an extra 20 or so games a year = an extra 80 at bats = an extra 8-10 home runs.
Perhaps the simple fact that it extended their careers for such a long time was the determining factor. Both of them were already premiere longball hitters before the roids, and that's one of the stats that actually tends to peak later in a player's career. Experience is so helpful to hitting a homerun... so many little details go into the act that you can continually perfect as you age, not the least of which is knowledge of the pitchers you are facing.
There's a lot of luck involved in hitting 60 or 70 home runs, too. A player like Bonds or McGwire who is pretty much at that elite level of home run hitting talent might have a certain small percentage chance to do it, and an extra 3-5 healthy years to take a crack at those records is a pure multiplier on that chance.
yep. that's why i think the numbers on steroid users are so tainted. you take guys like that who are not only missing less games per season with injury, but then also extending their careers a few extra years on top of that and the numbers they put up are a total sham. and for what? they were premier players to begin with.
and then i look at a guy like ken griffey jr, who i don't think anyone in the world suspects of being a juicer. dude has 630 hr and has 7 seasons where he played less than 140 games (not counting his rookie year). you add together all of the games he's missed over a 20 yr career and we're talking about roughly 4 or 5 seasons worth of missed games. tell me you don't think he's been tempted over the years (especially 2002-2004 when he played no more than 82 games in a season) to juice up and get back on the field.
you give junior griffey just 3 full seasons of his career back and we're looking at a guy who is flirting with 800 career home runs.
i hear these idiots talk about the pressure that they were under to perform and that they just wanted to get back on the field, blah blah blah. what a lot of people don't remember is that in the late 90's before mcgwire and sosa had their season, people were looking at griffey saying that he's "the one" who can challenge maris and aaron. no one was under more national scrutiny at the time than grif.
but dude stayed clean and he is undoubtedly going to the hof. something that mcgwire, bonds and the rest of them will never do unless they buy a ticket. just like me.

QuoteNEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez looked at the award he just received from Babe Ruth's granddaughter with big eyes and a broad grin. It was as if he almost couldn't believe it was his.
"Postseason MVP. Wow," Rodriguez said Saturday night. Pausing for effect he added, "What's next, the good guy award?"
it's bad enough that his lying, cheating ass is getting any type of award, but to throw that whole "good guy" comment out there is ridiculous.
The Tampa Bay Rays may not be able to afford staying in Florida much longer. NESN baseball analyst Peter Gammons reports on MLB.com that the Rays eventually could be forced to move to a more profitable market.
With spring training drawing closer and teams putting the finishing touches on rosters, Tampa Bay faces a bigger challenge than filling in its second-base hole. While the Rays have enjoyed success against big-market teams such as New York (Yankees), Philadelphia and Boston, their on-field success has not translated into revenue.
"There are smart people in the Major League Baseball offices wondering if there's hope of even discussing a potential move of the Rays to New Jersey or Southern Connecticut over certain protests from the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Phillies," writes Gammons on MLB.com.
Prior to the 2008 season, the Rays were ranked last or close to last in MLB attendance every year since 2000. The 2008 AL pennant only produced an average of 6,000 more fans per game at Tropicana Field. The less-than-stellar increase still tethers Tampa Bay to the bottom of the MLB attendance report.
Tampa Bay's baseball history has been an uphill battle from the beginning. When the MLB first looked to Tampa to begin a franchise, city officials of nearby, less-populated St. Petersburg resurrected the Florida Suncoast Dome against the wishes of the league. The Florida Suncoast Dome became the ThunderDome before becoming Tropicana Field.
Unfortunately, the story is not a "rags to riches" tale. After a struggle to find tenants, the eventual 1998 dawn of the Rays and even the American League title did not mark the end of the rocky road. Still, people are unwilling to travel to the area.
"The Trop is stuck in a place that no one east of Tampa -- such as the Orlando market -- will drive to" writes Gammons on MLB.com.
Gammons extends the issue across Florida, citing the Marlins as another strong organization that lacks a following, ranking No. 29 for 2009 attendance. The South Florida team is hoping that "location, location, location" solves its problems, with a new, more accessible stadium close to I-95 and Florida's Turnpike scheduled to open in 2012.
If locality is not the brunt of the problem with Florida baseball, it may be the state's poor economy and foreclosures, all cited by Gammons.
"The Marlins and Rays share a broader issue -- Florida," writes Gammons on MLB.com. "Yes, it's South Beach and Worth Avenue, St. Pete Beach and Siesta Key. It's also Orville Triebwasser's House of Taxidermy and Fort Lonesome, the Fossil Museum and miles and miles and miles and miles of cattle and hurricane remnants and foreclosures."
According to the Bleacher Report's JC La Torre, the economy has hit Florida as hard as other areas of the country, but the Rays' low attendance problem is more complex than just tough times. He believes that if Major League Baseball truly cares about the teams in Florida, it will stop holding spring training in Florida. The area's inhabitants -- most of whom have relocated from other parts of the country -- have former team allegiances. Being able to see their teams in Florida for spring training, why would they make the crossover to root for the Rays?
To make matters worse, WFTV-TV reported that politician Armando Gutierrez has discussed moving a baseball team to Orlando. The Milwaukee Brewers, who were mentioned as a possible option, have since refuted the suggestion of their potential relocation. But the possibility of a neighboring team poses even more turbulence -- and competition -- for the Rays in Florida.
By New Jersey, they mean North Jersey, therefore not mattering whatsoever here. Right?
Right? :paranoid
why not portland, kansas city or memphis?
why not contract six teams and start with tampa
they should do that in every sport but its not a logical plan.
getting rid of florida, arizona, tampa, kc, oakland and one other (dc?) would be great. yes.
yankees, red sox, tampa bay, kansas city, florida marlins, washington nationals?
move them north to Charlotte, then you don't have to worry about realignment or any of that BS
A quick Yankees note: they signed Randy Winn, so Damon is all but finished there...
lol charlotte is a god awful sports town for everything except unc and duke.
im pretty sure a team would do okay in portland, its an up and coming leftist city that is really supportive of the blazers. pretty sure they would go balls in for a baseball team. youd just move them to the al west and have the al east be the 4 team division. more sox/yanks games!
charlotte cant sell out nfl games
attendance in miami will be fine once they have the new stadium finished.
the issue with the west coast of florida isn't that baseball can't make it there. it's that the stadium is located 1/2 hour from downtown tampa in a place no one wants to drive to after working all day. there's no mass transit either. if they built a stadium with a retractable roof in downtown tampa they would get 30,000 a night there with no problems, especially if they continue to field competitive teams.
The US biggest metro areas without a MLB team (all of these metro areas are smaller than Tampa):
Charlotte
Portland
Sacramento
Orlando
San Antonio
Las Vegas
Indianapolis
And hey, there's always Montreal.

you sure about that?
well, miami is the 7th largest metro area in the country, so yeah, i'm pretty sure they can get 30K a night to show up.
the stadium is going to be freaking beautiful, dude.
the dolphins are one of the nfl's signature franchises and they cant sell out an 8 game schedule
ill believe miami will get 30k a nite for baseball when i see it

Whitey McCloud, a very frail 98-year-old man living on your street, stopped you today as you were heading to your car to remind you that there are only 21 days left until pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
"Can you hear it? Can you smell it in the air? I'm sure all you kids out there are ready to leave your compunets and carphones behind to soak in the sight of our grand game!" asked Jackson, whose brain may or may not be at last failing him. "Just 21 days. Only three weeks left until that magical time of year!"
When you informed McCloud that you were unaware of what he was referring to, McCloud offered a look of both disgust and horror. "Baseball, my boy! BASEBALL! Jeezum crow, has time passed me by so much that youngsters today can't even get excited about baseball anymore!" asked McCloud, whom time has passed by with considerable swiftness and cruelty.
McCloud, who has gray hair sprouting from seemingly very orifice, also took time while stopping you to regale you with endless anecdotes about watching baseball and/or listening to baseball on the radio in the family parlor back when he was a very small child. "I remember when ol' Joey Tin Shoes and I snuck into Ebbets Field! Now THAT was a day! We got peanuts for a nickel and had the time of our lives! Let's see you do that while playing your Space Instigators!"
Psychologist Frank Marron of Carnegie Mellon University notes that, around this time of year, many elderly Americans feel the urge to express excitement over the beginning of baseball.
"It's a signpost in their lives," explains Marron. "It means that they've made it another year, and that there may be hope that they'll live long enough to see at least one meaningless split squad game. Or, if they're lucky, that they'll live through yet another entire, seemingly interminable baseball season."
Marron says McCloud, who apparently is unaware of the existence of more exciting sports such as football, displays many of the characteristics common to baseball fans who have been seemingly fossilized in amber for hundreds of years. "Notice how disappointed he looks when you tell him you think baseball is boring. That's very common. Among the elderly, the brain has deteriorated to the point where they cannot comprehend the idea that baseball is dull and pointless, especially with the advent of the Internet and MMORPG gaming."
For his part, McCloud appeared undeterred by your indifference. He handed you a dime. "That's for a bleacher seat, sonny. NOW GET READY FOR THE BOYS OF SUMMER!"
that's some pretty awful writing. bad humor, a misspelling or 2, not to mention that it always annoys me when people say that baseball is boring. granted, it's not as exciting if you're only looking for constant movement or hard collisions. in order for baseball to be exciting, you actually have to take the time to study the game. football or basketball can be exciting to anyone, even if it's the first time they've ever seen either sport. baseball is definitely more of an acquired taste and is going to appeal to a smaller audience. and i don't care if people don't like it. but for the most part, the only people who bash it are people who have no farging clue at all.
where, might i ask, is that horrible piece of poo from?
I played baseball for a decade and made all sorts of all star teams and traveling teams and watched baseball through most of college and know the game pretty goddamned well.
It's boring as shtein but it has all sorts of random statistics so it keeps people interested. It's much better to read a box score the day after than to watch a 9 inning game.
you're one of the few exceptions. you know the game, you still don't enjoy watching it and that's fine. but most people who don't like it or who bash it, have never even tried to understand it. it's a game of patience, both from a playing and watching standpoint. and that's certainly something that's not going to appeal to today's society of instant gratification.
if you dont like baseball than you are a terrible, terrible person and as unamerican as glenn beck
you should probably start getting prepped for your target audience and refer to it as beisbol
Nomar retired.
