I'd probably split the difference between igy's viewpoint and popular sentiment.  I enjoyed the last season of BB, but contrary to the opinions of almost every critic and person I've read, don't think it's some unqualified masterpiece.  It was fairly predictable the entire last season & I found the conclusion to be somewhat contradictory to what I thought the narrative of the show was to that point.  I actually think the show peaked somewhere between season 3 & season 4 (from the last scene of season 3 through the trip to Mexico probably).

That being said, I enjoyed (and think there's an argument objectively) that stretch as much/more than season 5 of The Wire.  I don't think the peak reaches The Wire peak or the series as a whole does, but I think there are parts of BB that are as good/better than stretches of The Wire.

this is all ignoring the best show on tv anyway.  winter is coming)

Heh. I was going to interject with that but...fantasy always gets written off.

I do have a few friends who were/are huge BB fans that say Game of Thrones is the better show. I still need to watch BB though before I can judge myself...caught parts of the 1st season but didn't keep up with it. Will be getting the DVDs in the future I'm sure.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

That's funny E_L, midway through your post I was wondering how you would compare GOT to Wire and BB. and the praise IGY would lavish upon your keen critical sense.

Btw Munson, how did you like that taking the black beer? I saw a review that it said it was actually pretty good and from a quality brewery. I noticed it tonight and picked up a bottle.

My girl is a huge GOT fan and is coming down from New York this weekend so I've been waiting for her to try it. I have also heard really good things. I heard good things about the first one they did but unfortunately couldn't get my hands on it

I don't think you can really compare GOT after 3 seasons to either.   I also think in total there's still a good size gap between The Wire and BB.

I did think season 3 of GoT was better than season 5a of BB (which I thought was still good but the weakest since season 1) but the emmy voters didn't agree obviously.  I am also always going to be biased with GoT because I have such an affinity for the source material that I can never fully divorce the books from my analysis of the show even when I try.

actually its not...sopranos s1 and BB s4 were probably better structured and delivered than s5 of the wire.

sopranos s1 ill put on the same planet but still not close....lolbb

the culmination of the gus storyline was the best pure tv pure storytelling run perhaps ever

you want to break it down like an oscar vote yeah of course NOTHING tops the wire but in terms of viewer enjoyment those 2 are right there
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

I'm not sure why it's important to rank the shows, unless it's just because it beats doing something productive. They were different kinds of shows on in different decades and set in very different parts of the country. Both were great, and it's not like people had to pick one over the other. Enjoy them both.

They're both up there in terms of value. When you start getting into conversations about THE best, it comes down to opinion. I think a conversation about top 10 is probably more valuable, because most of the shows would get in that list...just reordered based on personal preferences. But picking just one is purely subjective.

phattymatty

even though i will never watch breaking bad or the wire more than the one time i already did...i do think that the final run of bb was much more exciting than the last season of the wire.

i'm all about friday night lights now. don't know where that show has been my whole life.

i guess you missed you it but there was no better storytelling than season four of the wire...its about the transformation of these four school kids...i wont get into it more so to not spoil it but what they did with them in the midst of a season was on such another level that it shouldn't even be called tv...and in fact the wire isn't tv...its something much more...bb was a very good TELEVISION show nothing more nothing less

totally agree with this...especially the second half of this last season of bb...its was so boring and anti climatic...it basically was six episodes and 50 minutes of filler to get to see how the show ends which is all anyone cared about anyway

and I dont really know the bb seasons off the top of my head because I didn't watch the show live I basically did a marathon to catch up but id say yeah about a season and a half ago was its peak

bb ive always said bb was a good show with some truly great moments but it was a never a great show...like it has no replay value for me other than if its on in syndication id stop and watch a good episode or always peak in on it....but no way could I watch the entire series straight thru again

I hope he plays a bumbling overweight husband to an attractive, sensible wife. There haven't been enough of those in sitcoms.
