i picked this keyboard/mouse combo at k-mart a few weeks ago.  was on clearance for $15 so i figured i'd give it a try and i can't really complain.  the only thing i don't like is that the 0 on the 10 key is the same size as the other keys and i'm used to it being bigger.  other than that, the thing works great.

you have a 10 key? all this time i've been typing 1 and then 0 like a sucker.

I've used a keyboard with a 00 key on it. I assume it was meant for Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Must have been made in Las Vegas. They're still trying to pass that off as a legitimate number.

Anyone got any advice on a laptop in the 500-700 range?

Best Buy's got an HP for 499 but I just won a few extra hundred from poker so I was seeing what else is out there, HP or otherwise.

I won't be using it for anything spectacular, just your basic internet/pr0n/school work needs. I never got into computer gaming much.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

I'd think that any of the netbooks would work pretty well, if all you were doing was surfing and writing papers. Look for a decent keyboard size (some of them are pretty tiny, and might be a PITA after a while), and get as much RAM as you can.

i've yet to hear anything good about netbooks from any manufacturer.  no first hand knowledge, but i know several people who have them.  and hate them.

Well, if you go in thinking that they're going to replace a regular computer, you'll surely be disappointed. Poorer performance, limited graphics, and the like.

I know a few people who have them for tethering to their cameras, and they seem to like them.

For Christmas, I got a Gateway NV53. Beats the hell out of the laptop I previously had. Get one of those and we can be Gateway buddies.

So hey buddy...  I ordered one of those last night, and it should be here in a couple days.  I'll IM you then.

Mine has not been a disappointment.  I like it.
The drawback to marital longevity is your wife always knows when you're really interested in her and when you're just trying to bury it.

I was thinking of going netbook, but there will probably be a few times where I do decide to watch a movie/TV show online or something like that, making a movie with something off my camera or something....in which case I want a fully operational laptop that I know will have good speed.

I just came from best buy and the guy there told me they were putting out a whole new series this sunday so I figure I'll go back then and see what's out. He was really putting HP down too, saying they got bad reviews recently and that Sony/Toshiba was the way to go. Hm.
