Any laptop...and he'll order it for you today.

I have a laptop with XP and am backing all of my stuff up on an external HD. Also syncing my Outlook and OE mail on it.

Now, what do I get?

I need about a 14-15" screen, ability to use both on my desk (home office) where I can dock it and use it with my monitor, mouse and keyboard (not looking to spend more money for extra stuff like wireless everything)...and also have it be pretty easily portable as I do some travel for work via train.

I figure Mac is out because I have to get all of my XP stuff onto the new computer...and the learning curve there...don't really have time to start really learning a new computer format, although I probably would need to with Windows 7 anyway?

Ugh, I'm lost. Some help would be much appreciated.

You can always get a MacBook Pro, and set it up to dual boot either MacOS or Windows. Just sayin'.

ok, so tell me more....tell me the pluses and minuses of doing that....

We just kicked the tires on all major vendors of laptops looking for a replacement for our current machines.

Looked at the usual vendors - IBM, Toshibia, HP, Dell, etc.

In the end we went with HP.

Excellent product - solid, reliable.

Hope that helps.

DO NOT get a toshiba satellite.  i think i've posted that before on here.  both my sister and i have both had catastrophic problems with them.  there was even a class action lawsuit floating around..  and the final payout was another year of warranty.. or like 100 bucks of toshiba credit.  and their customer service was terrible.  it still doesn't work, and i've given up on it.  easily the worst experience i've had with anything.

i've been using an apple, and their alright.. but i don't see whats so much better about them.  sure they don't really freeze or anything but i can't say i really had that problem after i got a normal working computer.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

The plus is that you get to play in both worlds. The minus is that you need to buy a copy of Windows, and you need to know a little about doing fresh installs. But the Mac hardware is pretty nice, and at least a while ago, it runs Windows faster than most PCs.

The cost is often prohibitive, but if your employer is buying, that's not a problem, right?

HPs Compaqs, and Gateways are the worst manufacturers. That's a fact.

The Mac is really the way to go, you can load XP/7 on it and use it as training wheels until you are comfortable with the Mac OS. If you are just too concerned about the learning curve, Dell is usually the best option.

I am not too worried about the learning curve on a new computer, but learning a Mac....but wouldn't Windows 7 be something I'd have to "learn" anyway?

My concern is are there things that I'd have to get rid of (apps, files, etc) that I have now if I eventually make the full switch to Mac?

I'm a sucker for Sony Vaio's.   Mine have been fast as shtein, ultra-reliable and now the new ones come with Blu-Ray players.

I'm getting a new one for my wife for Xmas.

Shhhhh... don't tell her.

Yeah, that's what I am getting rid of. Sony Vaio #3. They've been a complete and utter nightmare.

i'm sure someone already posted it but i'm too busy/lazy to read the responses.

if you want an apple, get an apple.  they not only have ms office available to use with the apple os (snow leopard i believe it's called) but you can also install a full version of microsoft windows onto your mac.  in a nutshell, you can literally divide your hard drive in half and run apple stuff on one half and microsoft stuff on the other half.  or you can adjust it and make it a 70/30 apple/microsoft ratio or whatever suits your needs.  and it is as simple as point, click and drag to make it happen.

i've been tossing around the idea of going to mac in the next year or so when i'm about ready to make a computer upgrade and there happened to be an actual apple rep in best buy the day i was giving them a look and dude showed me all types of crazy shtein that those things can do.  and it's so farging simple and user friendly.

so if you don't have to pay for the computer, you'd be nuts not to go for the apple.
