I do and I don't see any ethical problem with it.  She puts the info out there for her friends and family to see and so she's going to be held accountable...even when it's stuff that her friends post on her page.  If they post lots of obscenities or something, then I make her delete the comments.  I also check comments that she leaves on her friends pages as well.  She hates it but she's gotten a lot better in recent months about it.  It's just that she gives live updates throughout the day of everything she does.  That's going to be a much tougher habit to break.

If she wants privacy she can either write in a diary or have the conversations with her friends in person where everyone else can't see it.

I don't read the text messages on her phone though.  Although I will look at her phone first thing in the morning to see if she was up all night texting, and if so, I'll take the phone from her.  She tried to be slick once and delete the messages before I woke up.  Only problem was that she deleted all of her messages instead of just the ones from the night before.  So I looked at our account online and saw like 200 text messages between midnight and 2am.  She lost her phone for a week because of that one.

Here's an idea. don't give your farging kids cell phones. Our parents all managed to parent us without an electronic leash. What the farg reason is there for a child to have a cell phone?

Sure, give them a phone...but one that's totally restricted to only a few phone numbers (home, parents' work, parents' cell, school). No texting, no internet.

Sounds good on the face of it but I'm guessing that reasonable people have tested that strategy and found it lacking, not least because the device is much more than an electronic leash, especially to the child.

Um, what reason is there for a child to have a phone again? I'm still confused.

Same reason there was for me to have a Nintendo or a BMX (rather than a ten speed).  I wanted one.  It's what I did with my friends.

Now sure, I didn't need them and would have survived without them, but thank god Mom wasn't you.

Nintendos and BMXs were one-time purchases that are the equivalent of buying your kid a game. Something that stimulates and wastes time, but is basically harmless.

A cell phone costs money on a repeating basis and encourages your child to socially regress while exposing them to much more than is necessary or healthy.

Your comparison is a poor one.

I don't think anyone under high school age needs their own cell phone, and I can see giving them to high schoolers so they can keep in touch after school or whatever, but they absolutely need limits or they'll go fargin crazy with 750+ texts a month.  It's how they communicate with friends though, since using a landline phone is for old ass people like us...

That's kind of what I meant. Before HS, no effing way.
