I figured they did that for political reasons: the stadium is 25 miles away from Dallas, and if they put "Arlington" down there, it'd be some kind of admission that the Cowboys aren't really a Dallas team. hey they already had 11 sessions that went absolutely nowhere. Now you have Smith who is pretty adamant that if they dont get a deal done by march 5th, you have an uncapped year (which we are all aware of), and the players association will not go back to a salary capped system the following.
this is stemming from the fact that the nfl just signed a 2-year extension with tv partners that will give them a guaranteed $5 billion dollars no matter if games are played or not...and now the nfl is trying to reduce players salaries from 60% to 41% equals a hot friggin mess
I agree Igy, same rhetoric as in '06. Each side is all doom and gloom, pointing the finger at the other, as if the other side will really believe they better give in or the party's over for everybody. A lot of it is just posturing for their people. It will likely go down to zero hour, maybe with a couple of emergency extensions, before they get a new CBA done, and probably it's the union that will give in more at the end. It is possible however that they won't reinstate the cap, but I think it's unlikely.

I bumped into Sal Paolantonio a couple of minutes ago, and he said he's reporting that NFL Network has pulled Sapp off the air, at least for now. NFLN has decided to keep Irvin on the air.
Irvin currently is appearing on NFL Network as part of the Hall of Fame announcement show.

Sapp's girlfriend told cops that during the argument Sapp "grabbed her and began to choke her." He eventually threw her out of the room, she claims.
When cops spoke to Sapp, he told them he had allowed the woman to stay in his room -- but later on decided he wanted her to leave because "he was expecting company." He told police he was trying to help her and she fell.
Sapp is in Miami for the Super Bowl and serves as an analyst for the NFL Network and on Showtime's "Inside the NFL."
The NFL Network released a statement saying they were aware of the incident and that Sapp will not appear on the NFL Network until they review the matter.
Sapp is scheduled to co-host an event at BED Miami tonight. They tell us they haven't heard about the incident and, as of now, everything is still a go.

-- New Orleans, Indianapolis, Minnesota and the Jets can only re-sign their own FAs or sign players that were released
-- Dallas, Arizona, San Diego and Baltimore can sign one player that makes at least $5M/yr and any number of FAs that make no more than $3.3M + 30% increase in any year (so they can't sign a player to a $1M deal for 2010 and $5M+ for 2011)
-- If any of these 8 teams loses a free agent, they can replace him with one player that makes up to the amount spent by the other team. For example, if this was in place last year, the Eagles could've spent up to $3.4M/yr on any FA since they lost Dawkins for $3.4M/yr.
-- The other 24 teams can go nuts in FA without any restrictions

this makes sense. however, one thing that i think is different between peppers and kearse is that kearse came into the league and made alot of noise right away. however, his production declined in each of his first 3 seasons (in fact, his career numbers are literally a downward slope) and then by the time he signed with the eagles in 04, he was still living on the name he'd built 4 years prior. he is easily the worst free agent signing by andy reid imo.
peppers on the other hand, is still a very productive player. if i were to compare him to any other DE's in the game, i'd lean more towards jason taylor instead of jevon kearse.
peppers is still in great shape, has only missed 6 games in 8 years, but has played in all 16 games for 6 of those years so durability doesn't seem to be an issue either. i'm not saying that you break the bank for the guy, but he's definitely a guy worth paying. i don't know if he'll have the longevity of jayson taylor, but he's certainly not the flash in the pan player that kearse turned out to be.

since the number of stars represent the number of divisions in the conference, it was actually pretty stupid that the old afc logo had 6 stars since there used to only 3 divisions.
The playoff game logos are really bad. They look like menu options from a Nintendo 64 game.
And I just don't like the idea of Lombardi-izing everything. The NFL championship trophy should stand alone. Now the conference trophies look like weak knockoffs, like illegitimate sons of the Lombardi Trophy. The old conference trophies weren't great to begin with, but they are getting worse.

My issue with him was he always pulled a donovan at the end of big games and bowl games. Dude just fell apart in big situations. He's like a smart version of Mike Mamula. The Stats are blah, the tests are off the charts physically. But it all comes down to one part of his game, Balls... whats ironic about this new rule is that under the old system the team that won the coin flip only won the game about half the time...altho since kickoffs were moved back five yards the % is like 60
I love how everyone bitches about the NFL rule to the point where the league actually started listening and changed it. The defense has a job too. And on top of that its not like all or even most offenses score on every possession. Why all the moaning about winning a coin toss being a game decider?
I think its pretty clear majority of the coaches/owners wanted a fair shot to get the ball back if a game goes to OT, so a change should be rewarded.
To battle it out that long and remain tied at the end of a game and not get a shot at scoring is not keeping the game even. The defense is tired as shtein, the pass rush is basically non-existent, the qb has a lot more time, he pretty much makes 3 short throws...game over. Not to mention fg kickers can now boot a ball a lot further and more consistent than years past.
Im down with the change.
My prediction. Teams that lose the coin toss will go from winning 51% of the time to 60+% of the time meaning that this rule change will actually skew the results and make them LESS equitable.

no...because OT is a different "game"...they start over...once you do that each team should have an opportunity with the ball
if the 4th quarter ended in a tie and the game simply continued into a 5th period with down distance ect remaining the same then the previous 60 minutes would matter

I'd say everyone wins in that trade. Of course I have no idea whether anyone will be able to get the ball to Marshall (or Holmes for that matter) but Denver getting two high picks out of the deal is about all they could really ask for.
I like what Henne showed last year for a first year starter...at least from a getting the ball downfield perspective. He has a solid arm...very different from Pennington. He should double his TD numbers.
Marshall plus wildcat could have coordinators second guessing all over the place.

i don't feel bad for him either although i wasn't expecting him to get 6 games. it's a little steep for the (alleged) crime but i think the harsh punishment is more of a pr move than anything else. if he would have only got 4 games, the race card would have come out. hell, people already tried playing it when the steelers traded holmes instead of ben. but the league suspended pac man for an entire year based on allegations so if they didn't hit ben hard on this one, there would be a lot of bitching.

Never really had a problem with it. What gets me is when they make you put your seat up. The farging thing only reclines about 3 inches to start with. There aren't really a lot of off the field amenities needed. This isn't the Olympics or World Cup with hundreds of thousands or millions coming to the city for an event that lasts for weeks. Maybe the NFL is trying to turn it into that, but it's simply not succeeding. The Super Bowl is a TV event that lasts for a few hours on one Sunday afternoon and evening. Maybe seats would go for a bit less in Kansas City or Buffalo, but the game would still sell out and the 99% of us who watch it at parties or at home wouldn't see a difference at all.
I think there's something nice about how giving every city in the league its time in the spotlight (which promotes the league and shows support for all their teams), showing off the newer stadiums around the league, and basically not splitting the league up into "cool cities the league likes to promote" and "uncool cities the league is saddled with". That's something the MLB struggles with, but like I said I think they do it right with the siting of the All-Star Game.

No matter, Dungy wouldn't hire Ryan anyway. "Personally, I don't want my players to be around that," he said." I don't want to be around that. If I were in charge, I wouldn't hire someone like that." So, to be clear: being around Michael Vick: cool. Being around Rex Ryan: not cool.
The current NBC studio analyst then said that commissioner Roger Goodell should speak with Ryan because he fears that kids will watch the HBO show and get the incorrect message that using profanity is the way to be successful. I'd be more worried about kids watching Ryan will learn that using profanity is a way to be hilarious, but I see the point. (Although seeing how these kids Dungy speaks of live in households with HBO, I'm pretty sure they've heard one or 10 thousand bad words during their lives.)
There's nothing wrong with Dungy objecting to Ryan's language. He's entitled to his opinion and, in this case, I bet it's an opinion that's popular with many people. Ryan does curse a lot and if you're offended by that then it's natural to think he should stop. But to call out the guy on national radio, say you wouldn't hire him and suggest he go to the principal's office because he uses the f word in a motivational sense? That's going a bit overboard.
If Dungy doesn't want to curse, fine. It's worked for him. But to impose his beliefs on everyone else is holier-than-thou nonsense. Why does the Tony Dungy way have to be the only right way?

Westbrook was certainly more dynamic and exciting to watch than Bettis, but there's something to be said about Bettis' durability to be that big, carry the ball as many times as he did and be extremely successful in the process. 30+ years from now, younger football fans will know who Jerome Bettis was but it'll pretty much only be Eagles fans who know about Westbrook.
Normally I'd be in favor of giving a QB the nod over a linebacker but since Graham is already on the list at #14, I'd have left him out of the discussion for #60. Especially when you consider that he wore both numbers about the same amount of time.

Fact is a line needs to be drawn, because it's football and headshots are going to happen no matter what you do. Some sort of line between full on and/or intentional headshots/blows to the head, and shots like the one on DeSean where it wasn't a blow to the head and just a hard as farg hit.

It looks like they want to make players responsible for what they do even if it seems hard to anticipate or avert, like those ticky tack brushes with a QB's helmet they call a personal fowl on.
Will they continue along those lines and eventually fine/suspend players for any kind of hit that could unnecessarily put another at risk for injury, regardless of where they are hit? I think judging from the current trend we could see that within a few years. Could this be signaling an end of an era of football as we know and love it, with the big hits and physical intimidating play? Glad I still have some of those Eagles games from the late 80's and early 90's on vhs.

Even though the Lions are pretty much out of any playoff race, I don't think they'd want to bring Moss in. They've got a very young, talented, on the rise team and Moss could do a lot of damage in the locker room if he reverts back to his old self.

Jeff Legwold and Dave Kreiger of the Denver Post report that the league is looking into whether the Broncos recorded a San Fran walk-through practice at Wembley Stadium on October 30, the day before the two teams played there. On the 30th, each team had access to the venue for the session aimed at reviewing key portions of the game plan.
Per the Post, Broncos COO Joe Ellis confirmed that Broncos director of video operations Steve Scarnecchia is on a "personal leave of absence" as the NFL and the team investigate the situation.
McDaniels was employed by the Patriots during the infamous Spygate scandal, which arose from the videotaping of in-game defensive coaching signals. Scarnecchia left after the 2004 season, and he became the Jets' director of video operations under coach Eric Mangini in 2006. Both McDaniels and Scarnecchia arrived in New England in 2001.
On the eve of Super Bowl XLII, the Boston Herald reported that the Patriots had videotaped the Rams' walk-through practice prior to Super Bowl XXXVI. The Herald later retracted the report via a front-page apology.
Though it appears that Scarnecchia is being positioned to take the fall (assuming there's a fall to take), we can't imagine the head coach coming out of this one unscathed, if the allegations are substantiated.

Personally, I think that unless you're some type of position coach or coordinator, you shouldn't be on the sidelines....especially the strength and conditioning coach. Moderately surprised that they did it with only one game left. A lot of people were sold on Singletary from the start, but I never understood it. You always heard about how he was a "great motivator." It's the same thing as when you hear about how a new college coach is a "great recruiter". If that's all they can say about him, watch out. You want someone who can actually coach.
With Singletary you saw what happens when a motivator can't find ways to motivate his team anymore. At that point, he's nothing but another zesty coach.

I'm good with a 6. They have absolutely no running game and were forced to continue with the aerial game when running the clock out would have been preferable.
i put them at a 7/8 but almost more because of the patriots game than the giants
altho man was rodgers on point last night...all things considered and including all the throws you have to make as a qb in this league i think he has the best ball in the nfl
I don't know... his receivers were making some circus catches last night and the Giants forgot how to play defense. Rodgers has skill but he got bailed out on more than a few throws yesterday.

there isnt a throw that guy cant make and make consistenly...his arm is the complete package
I stopped playing this game this season. Bring on the farging saints, packers, bears, whoever. This team has to demonstrate it can beat the good offense with its depleted D if it is going to win the Superbowl. There are a lot of good teams in the NFC and the Eagles are one of them. I wouldn't mind getting revenge on any of the playoff teams we face. farg them. farg them all. I want to farg the 'farg da eagles shirt girl'.

Driver made a sweet one hand grab and the other receivers were jumping and diving all over the place making catches. He had some really good passes in stride, don't get me wrong, but more than half his passes were great individual efforts by the receivers. Rodgers has a good arm, no doubt, but he was also getting Brett Favre lucky on some of those throws.
well i dont believe a throw is bad if it doesnt hit someone in stride...sometimes the coverage the rush or the match up dictates you throwing the ball high if you have a big wr vs a small corner.....to a wr's back side or perhaps low where he has to dive or make an adjustment to catch it but where that was the only place it could be caught or to a spot that lowers the chances of an interception
in 35 or whatever attempts im sure rodgers didnt throw every ball perfectly but from what i saw he was off the charts yesterday
I watched the game because Pocahontas is a Packers fan and Rodgers was indeed off the charts.

either way that team is beyond ridiculously coached, and is only going to get easier for years to come with those kind of picks and that qb
whats even more stunning is that defense was supposed to be the most inexperienced in the league (and it showed in pass d in the beginning of the season), but they have it practically tossed in shut out games the last 3 of 4. they are almost a spitting image of the 2000 Rams on offense and defense, but with far far less talent at the offensive skill positions.

The league's new postseason overtime rules are now in effect, meaning a field goal on the first possession of overtime doesn't end the game. you couldnt go wrong either way but to act like its some travesty is nuts...polamalu made more gave saving plays than anyone in the nfl and matthews fell off in the second half of the year...not fell off in that he sucked or anything but he did not play at an mvp level...he blew his wad early...plus polamalus defense was number one in the nfl
i wouldnt have complained if matthews had won it but i think they made the right choice

During the Bears season opener, Fox Sports wanted to reference some headlines that questioned Jay Cutler's toughness in last year's NFC Championship game.
Since no headlines actually existed in any newspaper, Fox decided to make them up. And then say they were real. Seriously.
Here are the three headlines Fox used as a graphic, via Poynter:
1. "Cutler Leaves With Injury"
2. "Cutler Lacks Courage"
3. "Cutler's No Leader"
Fox analyst Darryl Johnston backed them up by saying "these are the actual headlines from the local papers in Chicago."
Except they weren't. The Chicago Tribune thought the headlines sounded fishy because Cutler was defended locally. They did an investigation, and there no such headlines in Chicago. Or anywhere else in the country.
"It was misleading," admitted FOX Sports spokesman Dan Bell.
It's more than misleading. They intentionally made up headlines and then went out of their way to say they were real.
"Our attempt was to capture the overall sentiment nationwide following that game," Bell said.
We're confused by the strategy. Why make up headlines when they could just hack into Cutler's voice mail and create a real one?
This is from The Chicago Tribune, which has never had a misleading or mistaken headline.
