jesse biddle

baseball america

Biddle's stock climbed along with his fastball velocity as the spring progressed. In his first outing of the season against Germantown Academy ace Keenan Kish, Biddle worked at 88-91 mph, but by the end of April he was sitting at 90-92 and touching 93-94 at times, with sinking and cutting action. Biddle's best assets are his arm strength and size; his 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame is both physical and projectable, and his upside is significant. But Biddle lacks polish and must do a better job staying on top of his secondary stuff. Scouts widely agree that his slider is more promising than his soft curveball, but he seldom deploys the slider in games, relying instead on the curve. His slider has a chance to be above-average in time. Some scouts say Biddle has shown feel for a tumbling changeup in bullpens and between innings, but he does not throw it in games. Biddle is an Oregon recruit who is regarded as a difficult sign, but he is a top-three-rounds talent with a chance to land a high six-figure bonus.

Jesse Biddle jumped onto the prospect scene thanks to his eye-catching size on the mound. However, don't let the Philadelphia native fool you, he packs plenty of athleticism into his body. The first thing you'll always hear about Biddle is how much scouts drool over his projectability, and some would compare his projectability favorably to almost any lefty in the entire 2010 prep class. Biddle's current pitch mix is good as well, despite being a cold-weather pitcher. His fastball is usually an upper-80s pitch that touches 92 with good life, and if he learns how to utilize his size and throw on a downhill plane, he could be a true power pitcher with groundball tendencies. Some scouts project Biddle to sit 92-95 before all is said and done because there's plenty to dream on with his frame. Biddle's slow curve projects as a future fringe-average pitch, but if he adds velocity to it with his fastball, it could be an average big-league pitch with time. His changeup is the pitch that has matured the most over the last year, and it's now a potential plus pitch to complement his fastball. It gets good depth and fade, and its 10 mph differential with his fastball makes it extremely effective. Biddle has true number two starter upside, and teams that believe in that could take him as high as the second round, though he fits more comfortably in the third to fifth round range. His Oregon scholarship may cost $1 million to buy out, but he'll probably be worth it in the end.

Jesse Biddle - P
Germantown Friends, Sr.
Birthdate: 10/22/1991
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 225 lbs.
Bats: Left
Throws: Left
Scout's report filed: 3/16/10
Scouting Report
Fastball: Biddle runs his fastball up to 92 mph.

Fastball movement: His fastball is pretty straight. His two-seamer has some arm-side run.

Curve: It's a soft curve, thrown 69-72 mph, without much bite. It's his third pitch, but you can project it to be better in the future

Changeup: He's got a very good feel for his changeup, throwing it 77-78 mph and locating it down in the strike zone well. It will be a plus pitch.

Control: His command is below-average right now, thanks to some crudeness with his delivery. There's reason to think that it can improve with instruction.

Poise: He's got solid presence on the mound.

Physical Description: Biddle is close to physically mature, with a thick lower half, high waist and big hands.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: Two above-average to plus pitches in the future with his fastball and changeup. Pretty good projectability.

Weaknesses: Most of his skills are fairly raw. Command and delivery issues need to be addressed.

Summary: Projectable, high school left-handers aren't always easy to find, and Biddle, while a bit raw, might be an interesting one for teams to consider. He's got the size (6-foot-6) and strength you like to see, and he's throwing his fastball up to 92 mph, with room for growth in that area. He combines that with an outstanding changeup, though his breaking ball is behind the other two offerings. His command and issues with his delivery might keep him from being one of the elite prep arms in the class, but a team that's willing to work with him and be patient could be very handsomely rewarded should they select him during the Draft.

Honestly you have to go with Strasburg, he is the most hyped baseball prospect that I ever remember.  Griffey and A-Rod are two others that come to mind, but the hype machine was different back then.

i hope strasburg doesnt make it out of the first inning
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

How can you celebrate Strasmas when the electrifying Kyle Kendrick is on the mound for the Phightins?

Before you whip out your jump to conclusions map, why don't we let nature takes it course with your wretched, phreak-level fantasy skills

Also I realize this has nothing to do with baseball but I would shove my sack in helen thomas' mouth
