The real problem with the entire abortion debate is that the overwhelming majority of people against it are against it because of their religious beliefs.  I've never heard an anti-abortion argument based on anything other than religion and you can't establish laws in this country that are so heavily influenced by religious beliefs IMO. Same goes for gay marriage. If the argument against it wasn't so deeply rooted in religion, then I'd probably be open to at least hearing the argument. But no law in this country should ever be based on religion....other than protecting the rights of people to practice whatever religion they chose, of course. But even that law does not cater to any specific religion, although many in this country would like to think that it only applies to Christians.

Wow. Well said. I am an atheist have fall somewhere between pro-choice and pro-life - that being the case I have completely given up on a rational discussion with anyone over because the zealouts always turn it into a crime against god and whatnot.

It shouldn't be religious, but it should be moral/ethical. Where is the line drawn where abortion turns into murder? The scientific answer would be once the fetus could potentially be viable outside the womb. But, it really is a red herring anyway. Abortion ain't going anywhere. Gays ain't going anywhere. Drugs ain't going anywhere. Quit trying to fight the fights you've already lost, and move on to more important things. That's why the GOP and the religious right are becoming more and more laughable.

All true. Wasn't trying to actual discuss my views on the issue here. To your last comment - that is expressly why for me, I can not even begin to listen to the GOP arguments, as they base so much of it in religious contexts, which to me, are nothing but fables. The best way I can sum up my feelings about how the GOP views me is the following video:

Completely agree.  For my own life, it's unethical.  But no way in hell do I think that everyone else needs to adhere to my moral and ethical standards (or lack there of).

That's always been my stance on it.....which is what, like 20some weeks, right?  The only obvious exception would be if life threatening health complications are discovered after that point.

Yup.

I am tempted to write something really hippoish about abortion, but instead I'll just say that unwanted children born into bad situations with no means or expectation for success are a much greater tragedy than a woman getting an abortion.

Blame Shoved Down Chris Christie's Throat

QuoteThe list of fools who have brought this disaster upon us certainly also will include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the gelatinous clown who (a) hogged up a prime time spot at the Republican convention to sing his own praises; (b) embraced Obama as the hero of Hurricane Sandy; and (c) then refused to appear at campaign events in support of Romney's presidential campaign. Good luck with the remainder of your political future, governor. It is unlikely Republicans shall soon forget your perfidious betrayal.

The man. The myth. The legend.

rjs246

I don't agree with Christie's politics but he's a Republican governor in a heavily Democratic state. If anything he just helped his popularity in his home state and if the GOP has any intelligence left it would be smart to take note of his behavior.

He's betraying his party by cooperating with the POTUS during and in the immediate aftermath of a once in a 100 year natural disaster.

farging Fox... Talk about laughable.

Obama would have won anyway, but I would have had to stay up later to be sure. Shut up, FOX.

QuoteA man of color is president for the second time, and this happened despite a struggling economic climate and a national spirit of general discontent. He has been returned to office over the specific objections of the mass of white men. He has instead been re-elected by women, by people of color, by homosexuals, by people of varying religions or no religion whatsoever. Behold the New Jerusalem. Not that there's anything wrong with being a white man, of course. There's nothing wrong with being anything. That's the point.
