It took me a minute to realize what Ed was "WTF'ing" about. I was trying to recognize the chick and wonder why she was significant enough to post a pic of. And then I saw it. The man-camel toe. And the wearing of flip-flops with jeans. Gross.

Be careful what you videotape.

I'm not sure what to think of this. For one, I would be pretty pissed if this guy was getting his jollies by taping my kid. But then again, it seems like an extreme case of Big Brotherism.

Diomedes

I'd be surprised if this guy is ever actually charged/tried/found guilty for a host of reasons:

a.) the law that he was charged with breaking addresses hidden/tiny cameras and secret taping....in this example the guy was hardly using one of those devices, and he was not taping secretly.  unless there is something in the law about what you can zoom on and what you can't, he's got nothing.  Even if there is some such clause, it can't possibly stand in any challenge outside of the thought police courtroom.

b.) good luck proving that by focusing on/recording somehting that is available for all to see, this guy broke any other kind of law.

c.) good luck proving that anyone was harmed in any way by this

d.) good luck also with the lawsuit he'll be bringing for defamation of character, damage to reputation and ability to earn a living at his profession, etc.

it's creepy what this guy is doing, but people are creepy.  I don't want any part of a government that thinks it can prevent people from doing things like this, or arrest/jail them for having done it.

I'm totally with ya there, Dio. The thing that gets me is the phrase, "filming a person without consent for sexual arousal." Like it would be okay if there was no arousal involved. Practically a thoughtcrime.

Rome

Common sense dictates that a grown man shouldn't be taping underage girls for any reason.  As a father of a young girl, if I saw some creep taping my daughter, he'd get a beating for his troubles.

Also - the comparison that the mouthpiece makes between taping adult cheerleaders and high school girls wrestling is ridiculous.

BTW: Before you say anything, DIO, put yourself in a father's position for a second.  Some dirtbag is taping your child.  What do you do about it?  Do you support his right to freedom of speech/expression/whatever or do you put your farging fist through his eye socket for possibly preying on your kid?

Diomedes

it's taken a long time, but I've recently realized that you are only marginally smarter than Bunk78.  in fact, you are possibly his older brother or something like that.

I don't think I would have any problem with a father going after a guy for taping like that. But I do have a problem with the government trying to limit and dictate what somebody can and cannot record in a public setting.

Diomedes

^^^

I'd want the father charged with breaking whatever laws he broke, because civilized society/policy cannot condone vigilante retribution, but I wouldn't have a personal problem with the man.

See, the thing that dumb people don't get is that you can't make laws to cater to what the offended or injured party would like done.  You can't put the family of the victim on the jury.  You can't allow extra-judicial punishment.

That doesn't mean you condone a given act..it just means you can't have a government policy that acts like a rapid mob/dad/friend.

That Jiffy Lube thing smells of a class action lawsuit.  Some dickhead lawyer is going to make millions of dollars while each of us that have been a Jiffy Lube customer will get a free oil change.

I hate class-action suits.  I get so many emails about such suits through owning certain stocks.  I opt out of every one of them.  I don't want some jerk-off lawyer making money off it.

Class action lawsuits have their place.  If someone like Verizon cheats a lot of people out of a small amount of money each, but not much from any individual, then without the possibilty of a class action lawsuit, it's not worth anyone's expense to get them to cease and desist, or to get them to repay.

That's a valid point.  I guess my issue is the way the lawyers get millions, sometimes hundreds of millions, for taking it to court.  Maybe there should be a limit on how much a lawyer's compensation should be relative to the individual payments.  I don't know how to fix it, but I think it's an issue.  I got an email from a lawyer just this week because of a class-action against Car-Fax.  I get one free report within the next four months or something - I think that's like a $4 value.

Maybe the lawyer should get a smaller percentage of the total pot, and more should go to the "victims."

farg.  I just hate lawyers.
