And you would have utilized said network? I hate to break it to you, but the internet cafe around the corner has been closed for 8 years.

Who do you think would have been digging those ditches for all the cable they need to lay?

The man. The myth. The legend.

QuoteJohn and Melissa McCafferty are parents and residents of Radnor Green, Delaware, a quiet suburban neighborhood. In their front yard was a basketball pole and hoop that had been there for 60 years.

Last fall the McCaffertys received a letter from DelDOT (Delaware Department of Transportation) informing them that the placement of the pole was in violation of state law by being within seven feet of the public street, and that the pole had to be removed. They were working with DE State Rep. Bryon Short to contest the removal of the pole due to alleged traffic violations.

Before the matter was resolved, a truck came rambling through the neighborhood yanking poles out of yards. Melissa McCafferty beat the truck to her house, where she parked in front of her family's hoop and climbed atop the pole in her fuzzy slippers to keep the killjoys from ripping her private property off of her private property.

Law enforcement officers had to be brought in to enforce the removal under threat of arrest. John McCafferty asked if they could keep their pole after it was removed. He was clearly told that he had the option of having the pole laid in his driveway after the removal. The pole was ripped out, and as the workers loaded it into their truck, John protested.

The woman that seemed to be in charge of the law enforcement contingent said, "They'll lay it in your driveway," after John asked to keep his poll. When they start to haul it away, he said, "That pole's staying, please."

"No, all of them are gone," the woman responded.

"What??" John yelled in obvious frustration, "You just told me I could keep it! You lied."

"I did not lie ... You can come and pick it up at a later date."

"You didn't say that, you said I could keep my pole!"

She did say that. The whole exchange is on video. Law enforcement lied to a private citizen about his rights. But wait! There's more. She then tells the McCaffertys (with a pointed finger, as if she's speaking to a belligerent toddler) that they need to go inside their house and not taunt the DelDOT workers. You know, because construction workers might get their feelings hurt or something.

This is government run amuck. Removing private property from private citizens and denying them their first amendment right to free speech, in their own front yards. Tom Blythe must be happy, since he's one of the few that complained about the poles in the first place. It seems that kids were actually using them to play basketball instead of other popular teen activities like fooling around, smoking pot, or shoplifting. According to Mr. Blythe, the kids were "making all kinds of noise and disturbing the peace."

Paraphrased: "Get off my lawn!"

WTF?  I don't have a problem so much with people not wanting basketball poles so close to the street, but the way this whole thing was handled seems a bit excessive and unwarranted.  Not to mention that the cops blatantly lied to these people about being able to keep their basketball pole.

Here's the video

The blonde in the video is the resident who filed the complaint in the first place.  What a bitch.

It infuriates me that people pick on kids who are doing nothing wrong.

If you don't like the sound of kids playing ball, move to the goddamn suburbs.

I live on a public golf course right now and there's a pond about 50 yards to the left of my back patio.  About 3 houses to the left of me is this grumpy old lady who has a grand daughter around 10 and she is just the snottiest little shtein I've ever seen.  Last summer a group of kids between maybe 10 and 13 yrs old were at the pond catching frogs.....they had a couple jars of them, maybe 20 frogs total.  I walked over and asked them what they were doing and they told me.  Said they live near a small man-made pond that doesn't have anything in it so they wanted to try and populate it.  Seemed like good kids, very polite and all that.  As I'm walking away I heard the crypt keeper start yelling at them to get away from the pond or she'll call the cops.  I walked back over and confronted her and she says that the pond is federally protected and you can't disturb wildlife there.  And the little brat starts chiming in too.  There's not a single sign posted anywhere around this pond not to mention that there isn't any wildlife that inhabits it that is protected.  Old bitch just didn't like seeing kids through her back window.  I told her to call the cops and that I'd be waiting right here for them to show up.  Apparently, she gives just about every kid in the neighborhood a hard time.  I can only imagine it's because none of them want to hang out with her stupid farging grand daughter.

She never did call the cops to my knowledge but I told the kids that if she gives them a hard time again to come knock on my door.  Dumb farging bag of bones.

Late to the game on this one (and I know you said it DIDNT have signs) but...

My dad works maintence at a golf course.  He told me that about 2 years ago, they got some signs that said something like "protected wildlife, no tresspassing".  The super gave him the signs and told him to put them up.  When he asked where, he was told "where ever".  Half the time, golf courses put signs like that up just to add to the appeal of the hole.
I'm not from Philly but some say I'm blunt.

That's doesn't surprise me at all.  Good marketing I guess.

Funny you bring this up though because last night my g/f and I were sitting on our back patio when the same little girl from that story came over to check out our dog.  She had a frog in her hand so I asked where she got it and she said "by the pond."  So I yelled at her and said I was calling the cops.  She ran away crying and her grandmother was pissed.  Farging c-bag.

A few of my friends live in Radnor Green. There's like a million suburban neighborhoods around here like that with basketball poles in the driveway. Lame.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

The EMB launched their new boards today. Awful beyond belief.

Munson

It looks like the old layout, back when we used to spam the hell out of the board and call it padding.
