49ers | Rattay Named Regular-Season Starter
Tue, 23 Aug 2005 13:09:16 -0700

KFFL has learned the San Francisco 49ers have confirmed QB Tim Rattay has been named the regular-season starter at quarterback.

Alex Smith must have really been bad because Nolan had said from the start that he was going to start.

Alex Smith is going to be a bust in this league.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

the Niners gave him a dump load of bonus money upfront...

i was looking forward to JJ's defense ravaging the little guy in week 2

They'll still get a chance.  I predict a body bag for Rattay in the 1st quarter.

McNabb didnt start for the Eagles right off the bat either.

The 49ers have to get their Oline and offense together before Smith is given the reigns.

yeah, but this is different because right after the draft Nolan had said that he was the starter and it was known that Smith went into camp being #1 on the depth chart.  so for him to now be #2 can only mean he is having more troubles than they anticipated he would have

How could he say who the starter is before he's even seen the farger play?

it was done with Tim Couch, David Carr, etc...

the decision is usually made before camp even starts.  it's a philosophy thing, you either think it's better to start the rook right away or you think it's better for him sit and watch

so Nolan changed his philosophy after he came to his senses and realized it wasnt smart to start Smith right off the bat.   big whoop.

While I think Alex Smith is going to be a bust, I don't think this move is indicitive of his bustiness.

Also, let's not forget that Nolan is a rookie head coach and he's bound to change his mind from time to time while getting adjusted to the pros.

Bottom line is that the Niners offensive line isn't exactly stellar, not to mention they tragically lost some depth with the death of Herrion.  I don't care if it's Peyton Manning, I'm not running a (highly paid, future of the franchise, #1 overall pick) rookie QB out on the field behind a questionable offensive line so he can get killed.  Dom Capers is lucky David Carr didn't lose a limb his rookie year when he got sacked every other down.

Bust or not way too early to tell for a first year QB.   I do think that, for what it counts, that a first year QB needs time.  He has to understand the speed of the game.    Letting him sit for a while and learn is not a bad thing.  He probably played no more than what 12 games at any time during he college career.

All that said does the "value" of Phillip Rivers - what ever his future holds - increase due to his time on the bench in San Diego.  Or does it decrease?   IMO he's now kind of like an unknown commodity.
