they arent one player away but they made the playoffs and supposedly have their qb of the future in tow...this isnt last year where they were coming off a 3-13 season with mike vick as your leader...if they go out and have an offseason like last year and just sign servicable players while they are 25 million under the cap they should be blown up....i would argue that this is precisely the time to take that next step and make some power moves...especially at a huge need position

They need 2 safeties, an OLB/pass rusher, O line depth (possibly a LT), and 2 receivers and that's just for this upcoming season. Some of these issues will be addressed in the draft. They have players that will also need to be locked up after next season. After they release Chung, restructure Ryans, and a few other deals, they should be in the $25-30 million range. I can't see them spending $8-10 million per on one safety. Just doesn't make fiscal sense when that position can be upgraded for less while other needs are addressed.

If you're going to spend that kind of money, you sign a guy like Orakpo. Safeties shouldn't get caked off especially when the position can be upgraded with 2nd round picks and there are an abundance of options in free agency.

the days of trying to upgrade safety in the second and third rounds are gone for them....in the last i dont know 5-6 years the best second round safties in the whole league are ironically probably nate allen and byrd...it doesnt happen as often as you think

id much rather rely on the draft for the pass rusher than for safety...and usually you have no choice as top notch pass rushers rarely are allowed to hit the market...that said if it happened and a stud DE was available on the market i would have no problem putting that as a bigger priority than safety...i just dont think theres going to be a DE available that is on the level that jarius byd is as a safety

i also dont think its a mutually exclusive deal...they have enough money to buy both if they want and if there are options out there...the best thing about foles is that hes really cheap for a couple more seasons...which is a huge deal to have a good cheap qb...and they arent exactly loaded with great young players who are going to require huge money in the next couple of seasons...like say the seahawks

either way i just hope they are aggresive as shtein this offseason

If they start signing overpriced mercenaries again I want nothing to do with them.  Draft better and sign complementary pieces.  That's how you win Super Bowls.

ice grillin you

so dont sign orakpo or jarius byrd because they are "overpriced mercenaries"?

You can actually do both and be successful. You don't build a team through free agency, but you can certainly add talent...especially on D.

Rome

Complementary pieces = quality free agents.   I'm fine with getting them.

Free agents who get huge deals are almost never worth the deals they get.  Let the taterskins have their shiny baubles.  I want the Birds to build a team through the draft.  That's how you get "great young players."

you can also sign great players....just an fyi buddy

I think the idea is more Troy Vincents, less Nnamdi Asomughas.

The man. The myth. The legend.

Exactly.

The problem is most free agents don't make it there until after they've started to decline.

QuoteKelly, of course, prefers length. He has given 10-minute dissertations on the value of long arms, especially on defense.

Reading this gave me a mini erection. I hate the short stubby Graham/Mcdougal not overly athletic types Reid liked to draft. I'll take tall and rangy any day.

i dont even care about long...ive been preaching athletes since 1999...this isnt rocket science...i dont ever again wanna see another gocong
