Rome

My girls saw Thor this morning.  Never been happier to have to go to work in my entire life.

I saw The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy over the weekend and it was funnier than I thought it would be.  Melissa McCarthy is a funny lady, her ad lib shtein was hilarious, even if it ran a little long at times

"For all the civic slurs, for all the unsavory things said of the Philadelphia fans, also say this: They could teach loyalty to a dog. Their capacity for pain is without limit." -Bill Lyons

Tomahawk

Streamed Zeitgeist on Netflix last night. It discusses the assimilation of pagan traditions and beliefs by christianity, questions the validity of our government's explanation of 9/11, and how the federal reserve being a private institution is not in the public's best interest.

I'm exactly the audience this movie was made for so I thought it was good...except for the first 10 minutes and some other cheesy parts. but for the most part, well done.

GI Joe: Retaliation. Nobody's surprised that this was farging terrible, but would you believe it could have been good? Because it could have been good. There are scenes in this movie that are actually great. They don't have the protagonists in them, and they sure as hell weren't any of the action scenes, because those were both awful.

Every action scene was basically just a collection of still frames from 8 different cameras edited together so that you get the vague impression that a fight is happening without having to actually see it. Someone saw The Matrix a hundred years ago, watched the scenes shot with 100 cameras to get those neat slow motions shots, decided they could do the same thing with just a couple of cameras pointed at angles that make no sense. So many movies do this now that I don't think I can even complain about it without being an icehole. This is just the way things are. The sky is blue, the movie poster is blue and orange, and the fights are choreographed and directed by Skip from catering.

RZA makes an appearance in this. Somehow he just knows when someone's doing any kind of bad kung fu bullshtein and comes in to make it worse. This time he got to be the blind old master of a temple where the little orphaned white kid grew up to be their best student.

The guy playing the guy playing the President was good. Jonathan Pryce. He was in the good scenes early in the movie that made me think for a second it might not be that bad. That's how good he was in this awful movie. He should be in more stuff, and everyone else should probably not make movies anymore.

Somehow, it still could have been good. This movie was so terrible that they pushed it back a year to rewrite and reshoot it, and it definitely helped. With another couple of years of rewrites and reshooting, this could have really been something special.

I wrote a lot of words about a bad movie. I really need to start watching more good movies.

Finding good movies is so hard to do that I gave up trying some time ago.  It was a good call.

Well then you obviously haven't seen that one with the explosions, vehicular chase scene and the hard ass muscly guy running around shooting shtein up to save the world. I forget the name.

Saw the Hunger Games sequel this afternoon with the family.   It was actually a better film than the original.   Donald Sutherland was great.  The main cast was anywhere from meh to good but PSH stole the show as usual.  The guy could give master class acting lessons just by reciting a Chinese menu.

Solid B+ for me.

It's worth the 10 bucks.  Go see it.   Or not.  Whatever.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

See it for Hoffman if for nothing else.  Dude is epic in every freaking film he does.   He oozes evil in this.
