Thanks internet message board, for bringing light into my life!

holy jesus!

I compared my honda accord to the prius....holy farging shtein...I would only be spending a third in gas at the current gas prices.

I think I'm going to aim towards a prius. Gas is too farging crazy.

Is your current car payed off?

If it is...why not just keep driving it? To buy a new car now, would give you a car payment, or your spending $23,000 just pay for less gas.

If your looking at this in a money sense alone, it makes very little sense to buy the hybrid at their current prices. Unless you needed a new car anyway, and even then, you can get a good used car that would be under $10,000

You can buy a used $10,000 car and drive 113,000 miles on it for the price of a $23,000 Prius.

Stop making sense.  We don't liken to that here.

It's a different story if you're shopping for a hybrid for the environmental standpoint if you drive 20,000+ miles a year. But less than 15,000, it doesnt makes sense either, buying used reduces the carbon footprint of your car purchase since it did not just come off an assembly line, and you're extending the life of the energy used to build the car in the first place.

i.e.
if a car takes 20,000 energy units to build from the 1st step on the assembly line to it arriving at the dealer.

1 owner, 1 car @ 5 years = 4000 units spread a year
1 owner, 2 cars @ 5 years = 8000 units/year
2 owners 1 car @ 10 years = 2000 units/year

Unless you drive a lot... it just makes more sense to buy a nice used car. The only part that that hurts is the bottom line of the car company because they would be selling less new cars.

The problem is that the hybrids are selling for a premium. So much that the savings from fuel costs doesn't quite make up for the higher up-front cost.

So buying a hybrid to save money still isn't a realistic goal.

Unless you drive a ton (like the ladyfriend) or you car just died (like ours did the week before we bought the hybrid). Plus we got it for a much lower price than people are able to talk them down to now because of the timing of the whole thing.

In other words, I rule. Again.

Yep.  Not to mention that hybrid technology will drastically improve over the next few years which will make the cars more reliable, less expensive to maintain and a little cheaper to drive off the lot.

With Chuggie being in real estate though, I'm sure he logs a lot of miles going from appt to appt so it very well may be worth it for him to buy one now.

ice grillin you

Rome

My 2000 Accord V6 gets around 28 on the highway and 20 in the city.  The hybrids get about 12-15 more on the highway and 20-25 more in the city.  Considering my car is paid off and I can get at least another 100,000 miles out of it, there's no farging way I'd consider buying a new one.

If I had a Hummer or V8 Jeep, though, I'd trade it in quicker than a motherfarger.

Sgt PSN

I've got a 98 4runner that believe it or not, get's me about 20mpg city and 22/23ish on the highway.  I've had it paid off for about 6 years now so it's not going anywhere.  My stang on the other hand........will probably be on craigslist in the next couple of weeks.

Got a real job. Got no kids. Ladyfriend makes as much as I do. Still happy as shtein that the car we have allows me to save that much farging money. I had my gas-guzzling midlife crises car already. I'll probably get another one once I hit my midlife crises. For now, I couldn't give less of a shtein that my car looks like a go-cart.
