That's assinine. If an offensive tackle can only run-block but not pass-block, is he elite? If a TE can only do half of his job well, he isn't elite.

i wasn't comparing the two.  only disputing the original claim and at TE can't be elite unless he can block well.

L.J. isn't even an elite pass-catching tight end at this point.

He's a good player but he's far from being Tony Gonzalez.

And his blocking skills are pretty atrocious too.  That hasn't really mattered much because the Eagles never gave much thought to running the ball in the past but if that's going to change, then his shortcomings in that department will become pretty glaring pretty soon.

I will happily 'sponsor' LJ again this year, but make no mistake, I would just as happily wave goodbye to him if this team could find a TE who was slightly less capable as a receiver but adequate as a blocker.

TEs had 2 jobs. The position has started to evolve away from that though. Alot of these guys are basically just an extra reciever on the field. The NFL is at the point where you have a tight end and then a "blocking tight end".

Remember when the fullback used to have to be able to carry the ball? The position evolved away from that...

That fastest TE label died the second Vernon Davis was drafted. Gates is the best TE though until proven otherwise.

To me LJ just needs to hang on to the ball. He's very good at getting open, but he just needs to hang on to the ball.
