Title: Eagles/Saints Talk
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on September 14, 2009, 12:04:51 PM
Well, we all think the worst for this upcoming week. Even with McNabb this was going to be a tough game. The silver-lining here is that the Saints defense can give it up. The black cloud is that Kevin Kolb would have trouble exploiting a solid Division I defense.

Title: Re: Eagles/Saints Talk
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on September 14, 2009, 12:32:07 PM
The theme for this week, and it is already being pushed, is how Kolb never gets snaps with the first team offense in practice. Now he will have a week to prepare and practice as "the guy" and that will help him.

In theory that sounds good. Especially if they tailor the game plan to fit the new incoming players skills. But the problem here is that Kolb holds the ball so damn long that his window for completions in timing routes close quickly. Then he runs around and ends up dumping it off, taking a sack or throwing a pick.

Corn on the Kolb. Has anyone thought of that one yet? It's exactly like Korn on the Kolb but without all of the anal and oral copulation.

All about the defense and the run game in this one. If D can hold Brees in check then we'll be fine. Kolb just needs to throw a few here and there. Heavy dose of Westbrook, McCoy, DJack and Buckley. Kolb does look horrible though. I don't care what excuses that may come up for him. Its time for him to prove his worth. I'd still go get Feeley at this point. Thank god we got Vick. Just hope he can jump right in and do good, just don't see it happening at this point.

saints -2.5?

igy, the decimal is at least one place to the left

Sal Pal didn't "want to compare Kolb to Peyton Manning, but both threw 6 interceptios out of their first 18 pass attempts so Kolb deserves the benefit of the doubt"

lolz.  idiot is an understatement.  manning also started for a team that was 3-13 the previous year and didn't have ish for a supporting cast.  kolb probably has the deepest pool of playmakers that i can ever remember seeing on the eagles roster.

having said that, kolb should print that sal pal quote out and put it in his scrap book because it's probably the best thing anyone is ever going to say about him and the only time he'll ever be mentioned in the same sentence as peyton manning.

but he never gets to practice with them.  I guess the Eagles' backups on their own could be a 3-13 team...

And Manning had Faulk, Harrison, Dilger and Pollard plus a high pick in Jerome Pathon.  Their issue was the defense (built by JJ the year before), which couldn't hold anyone under 20 points unless Ryan Leaf was playing....

This will be a tough one. Only hope is that the D can hold the Saints offense in check, and the Eagles can mount a good run game to keep Brees off the field and run the clock down. If the Eagles fall behind in this one and Reid has to have Kolb throw over 20 passes, it's over.

The Eagles played extremely well taking the run away last week, so Carolina had to rely on Jake D's arm with a shadowed Steve Smith all game. Thats a recipe for disaster and it showed. Now youre asking the Eagles to take away a pass first team which scares me a bit, not because of the eagles corners but because of LB's. There is no team in the NFL that has the slew of offensive weapons the Saints have...and they are all healthy unlike last year.

The Saints love to play the seam routes on the outside, and if they do go vertical on the outside with Meachem and Colston taking S Brown, A Samuel and a safety with them that leaves the middle of the field with L Moore, R Bush (out of the backfield and the slot), and Shockey having big games. If the eagles decide to play a cover zone to slow up the big play, brees can still eat them up....not to mention the Saints offensive line only gave up 13 sacks last yr

with McNabb out...saints roll here
with McNabb and his flack jacket....saints roll here

Saints 28
Eagles 10

If 5 was healthy it would be some crazy score like 44-42, but with Kolb in....ugh I can't even think about it.

The only way we might survive is if the defense holds up, and Reid channels Mike Ditka and grinds the clock out on the ground with Westbrook and McCoy.  Brees can't throw 6 TDs from the bench after all...

id be a fool if i disagreed on kolb's ability. the guy one of the worst qb's who has had more than just a cup of coffee with the eagles in a while...but for the first time in ages, im gonna drink the koolaid and believe that practicing with the varsity will pay off for him, and along with another strong performance from the d, the birds go home 2-0.
Title: Re: Eagles/Saints Talk
Post by: reese125 on September 14, 2009, 11:42:18 PM
if practicing with the 1's for 3 days is going to catapult this guy into a qb who makes quick defensive reads, steps up in the pocket and gets rid of the ball in a timely fashion I might have a shot at the backup spot

The Saints offense (read: Brees will pass for) four touchdowns. Their defense, blessed with 11 pulses, will be able to take the ball from Kolb whenever they damn well please. Whether or not they score is entirely up to the tackling ability of Westbrook.

you do know that seam routes are run to the middle of the field not the outside....thats a GO route...you also must know that seam routes work best against zone coverage which the eagles run less of than most teams in the nfl since they have excellent man to man corners

altho shockey i can see explotiing the seam because the linebackers cant cover

The Saints O is solid, no doubt about it, but they were playing the Lions last week. I might be able to throw for 4 TDs against the Lions with my 5 year old as my sole receiving threat.

With a gimpy McNabb, or no McNabb...the Saints have a great shot in this one. Then again, it's one of those games where the Eagles seem to rally together. They tend to win games like these and drop ones they should win.

I'll be generous and say the Eagles gut this one out and win 27-24.

Word. No way the Saints put up 40 on this D, but they WILL score a 20-30 and I don't see Kolb's sorry ass leading the O to enough points to keep pace.

Gimpy McNabb shot up full of cortisone...maybe.

Since McNabb isn't likely to play, that more than likely means a steady dose of running the football.  One thing Reid has done when he goes down is run the ball more.  The Saints are horribly thin at DT, so that could be one way the birds could win.  Even with a healthy McNabb this is a match up I don't like.

I'm going 17-10 Saints this weekend.  Kolb doesn't engender any confidence in me that he can consistently put together drives this weekend, but I think the D will play well at home and at least keep the game close in terms of the score.  But I just have a feeling that it will be one of those afternoons where it will be sloppy offensive play and that, even though the Eagles will probably be within striking distance all game, they just can't seem to get much past mid-field.  One of those "one step forward two steps back" offensive days.  But we'll see.

More like urinating all over it. All these yahoos down here worship at it and I'm the one who tells them how much he sucks, which they don't like too much.

Z,

You're gonna be a lawyer? Was that what you originally went to school for?

Yeah pretty much.  I had the idea in undergrad and it just carried over to law school when I figured out I probably couldn't do much with my undergrad degree.  Still trying to figure out if it was worth it or not... when I figure it out I'll let you know.

This will be a tough one. Only hope is that the D can hold the Saints offense in check, and the Eagles can mount a good run game to keep Brees off the field and run the clock down. If the Eagles fall behind in this one and Reid has to have Kolb throw over 20 passes, it's over.

This is the key for you guys.  Most teams haven't been able to stop Brees early.  That is why the Saints spent money in the offseason getting value and depth in the secondary.  They figure since Brees scores on teams so quickly, we need to focus on stopping the pass first.  Though you can't ignore the fact that the run D for the Saints in the preseason and in the first real game has been pretty impressive... even if their opponents aren't rushing world beaters.

Yep, pretty much. They have to harass Brees enough to throw off the rhythm of the offense. I don't know if they can do that. Ideally it would be with a 4-man rush and not have to blitz and leave guys open down the field.

I expect that snatch Jeremy Shockey to have a good game.

Lions dropped 27 on this Defense.... Kolb+Eagle's 1st team > Lions (period...) Close game 34-27 EAGLES!

Actually, they only dropped 20 on us.  The last TD was a result of an offensive fumble being returned immediately for a TD.  I'd chalk that up to a week 1 mistake (and a great play by the Lion that recovered it).  Also, our offense and special teams gave the Lions the ball inside the Saints 20 three times due to bad kick coverage twice and a fumble once (we held those 3 attempts to 10 points).  Finally, another TD came after our starting corner Greer took a hard hit and had to sit out for a play or two.  Stafford immediately took advantage of the rookie replacing him and went to Johnson for 60+ yards and a TD (I'll spare you the drama of terrible officiating).  The Lions only had one honest scoring drive and it ended in a FG.

In truth, the defense played very well, although it was admittedly against the Lions.  If the Eagles don't get several turnovers or injure that starting corner, you may find the Saint's D is a lot stingier than those 27 points make them look.

nice!

and the only reason the saints defense will be "stingy" is because kevin cobb eats taint...giving up 10 pts to him would be worse than 20howeveryouwannaspinit pts to detroit

Don't forget the Eagles are due a couple freebee Personal Fouls calls since they were farged by the Refs on the Facemask and FairCatch Int calls... Nobody really cared much about those calls later since they won by such a huge margin, but they were Bullshtein none the less. Using davidstvz logic the Eagles D didn't give up that rushing TD since that drive would've ended.

Tomahawk: The Saints are well aware of that  ;)  Didn't someone earlier in this thread mention, off-hand, what a pain in the ass Washington has been the last few years despite their poor records.  I think that was due to  Greg Williams' defense.  They even beat us 16 to 10 (shutting down a last second TD attempt) back in '06 in between games where we decimated the Cowboys and Giants.  That's why we hired GW this off-season (along with several new personnel for the secondary, the line and returning greats such as Vilma at LB).  Basically, this is an almost completely different defense from last year.  With Williams' history, odds are it will be significantly better than 7th worst... and with any luck it will be enough to finally get us a winning season again.

RezBob: no doubt there are BS calls here and there, although I didn't complain about any.  What I was referring too was the officials screwed the Lions out of a TD (by accidentally calling Calvin Johnson out of bounds at the 3), and then by the look of it turned around and made three dubious calls (two personal fouls, and negating a fumble).  I freely admit the Lions should have had that TD straight up, but it took the Lions 5 plays, two penalties and a near fumble to get those 3 yards after the officials screwed them.  Were any of those dubious calls pity calls?  I know the league would deny it, but I don't really care if they were as the Lions deserved the TD.  But if they did need pity calls, then that speaks to the quality of our D.  That's all I meant there.

Rome: I'm sure you have great insight into Katrina and its aftermath, but I think I'll pass.

Haha, well it might help if I was an Eagles fan, but hey, what can I do?

So back to football.  I'll tell you "secret" about the Saint's offense.  Our biggest weakness at the moment is left tackle Jermon Bushrod (in his third year).  He's done well all preseason, but he's still the backup, he's slightly injured already (bruised knee and a mild high ankle sprain), and Sunday will be only his second NFL start.  If he goes down, we still have backup Right Tackle, Zack Strief (who is solid), but we have no other depth there.

QuoteMcNabb doubtful for Sunday as Eagles shake up line
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 18, 2009 2:12 PM ET
The Eagles say they are still hopeful that Donovan McNabb will play against the Saints Sunday, but their injury report has recognized that it's a long shot to happen.

McNabb is listed as doubtful with his cracked rib.  Defensive lineman Victor Abiamiri is listed as questionable after injuring his groin this week and missing practice Friday.

Kevin Kolb should get the first start of his career, and will get a chance to improve his gruesome 3.7 yards-per-attempt average that he's compiled in 45 career attempts.

Kolb will play behind an offensive line that continues to make changes.  Coach Andy Reid announced the team will rotate his three guards: Max Jean-Gilles, Nick Cole, and Stacy Andrews.  Which is a nice way of saying that Andrews has been benched.   (Jean-Gilles will replace him as a starter.)

Considering the sizable investment the team made in Andrews this offseason, this is a disappointment, no matter how it is spun.  The Eagles expected the brothers Andrews to dominate on the right side of their line together for years.

For now, neither one is in the starting lineup.

Ok, so Abiamiri is finally healthy and plays well...then gets hurt again.

Andrews2 is being rotated in and out. Who the farg rotates OG's?!?

At the very worst, the Saints straggle in as a wild card.  To confidently think they won't make the playoffs is pretty crazy imo (or badly informed).  We have a lot of depth this year and fewer injuries (you look up an injury report from this time last year).  Not to mention two coaches known for being great play callers on offense and defense.

If you insist!  Here's a good preview for Sunday... now I know the Eagles won't make as many mistakes as the Lions did, but you only have to give Brees one open man out of about 5 or 6 targets on any given play.  And of course, the Eagles better respect Mike Bell or he will run the ball successfully.

RE: Wildcard:

I'd say you have 3 possibilities and only two slots.  Here are you division champs and wildcard contenders obviously:

Vikings Green Bay
Giants Cowboys
Falcons Saints

Honestly, I'm not ready to give a division crown or wild card to any of those teams yet except the Saints (and that's just because I'm a fan no doubt).  And I'll believe the Falcons have another great year when I see it.  I think last year all the coin flips went their way.

you forgot the west champs and there are only 2 wild card spots.

edit:  misunderstood the post the first time i read it.  i see that you said only 2 wc spots and were listing the 3 teams you think will compete for them.  no need to include the west winner since it's an irrelevant division anyway.

Waking up at 8 AM to get to the link and help the boss set up. I hate the no bottle policy....opening cans and pouring them into cups sucks. Either way, it'll be my first Eagles home opener, and I'll be getting paid to be there. Can't really beat that.

Too bad Kevin farging Kolb is the starting QB.

An odd feeling came over me today...I actually think these guys have a shot to win. Obviously several things must happen for this to be reality...

1. Disrupt Brees and don't let him set his feet. One of the reasons I started to think the Birds have a shot was NO's record outside of Loooosiana last year (2-6) and Brees' stats outside of the dome (14 TDs & 12 INTs).

2. Establish Westbrook and McCoy early. Run left often, let Peters and Cole assert themselves and have Weaver play a lot of snaps.

3. Reid and Marty need to have Kolb in game management mode. No tricky shtein. No complicated shtein.

4. Kolb needs to take what is given to him and get the ball out quick. Please change the batteries in the clock inside his head so he knows when pressure should be there and have it get the ball out.

Eagles - 23
Saints - 17

Swami picked the Birds to win too. Of course the Eagles have a shot - any given Sunday and all that bullshtein. The reality is, though, that the Eagles really can't win this, or any, game with Kolb as the QB.

But I do like your road stat of NO

I hope the Eagles run more than usual, and if Garcia was starting, I'd think they would, but I worry Reid is going to try to prove he made the right move in drafting Kolb.

If the Eagles do somehow win, it will be because of some unbelievably lucky plays by Westbrook or Jackson

The Saints were a last place team last year. Their offense is sick but overall they are a mediocre club. So of course it's not impossible for the Birds to win this game without McNabb. Just makes it a hell of a lot more unlikely.

Eagles 13

Considering that Korn Kolb can't throw the ball over 30 yds. in the face of a 10 mph. wind, I don't think the Eagles have much of a chance. Last week he heaved one to Jackson that DJ outran, and had to slow up so much that he ended up playing defender. Only chance the Eagles have is to run, run, and run some more.
Title: Re: Eagles/Saints Talk
Post by: PhillyPhanInDC on September 20, 2009, 11:46:51 AM
I think if Kolb throws more than 17-18 times, the Birds loose. They've got the line, the FB, and runners to pound the ball all day. BWest and Shady should both have over 15 carries.

They won't do any of it, Kolb will throw 25+ times, and have minimum 2 picks and maybe 200 yards passing. The sunny side (I'm hoping) is that if they loose, which I am pretty sure they will, Kolb is so horrid he doesn't last the rest of the season on the team. Get it over with.

Kolb doesn't have McNabb's ability, especially after a play falls apart, but I gotta say that overall the offense isn't skipping a beat with Kolb in there. Big Red has opened up the playbook with some crazy shtein, I guess this is a preview of what we're going to see with Vick.

I think Reid could get in some trouble after this game, pretty sure that weird A-11 formation is illegal in the NFL:

QuoteThe offense is not currently legal in the NFL[11]. The main problem is the league's rules concerning the required jersey numbers of players at different positions. Players who usually play at positions that are usually ineligible to receive a pass must declare themselves as eligible receivers to the referee if they will be lining up at an eligible position in a formation. The referee then announces their eligibility before the play, negating the surprise factor of not knowing which players may go out for a pass. The Emory & Henry formation and two-quarterback system are both legal, though they are rarely used.[12]

i doubt it.  not in a tie game on their own side of the 50.  if it's short, they risk giving up a fg at the least and then the eagles get the ball to start the 2nd half.

That formation was not the A-11. Looked like Emory & Henry, as the players on the line were linemen.

it seems to me, that for the most part, the recievers are wide the farg open.  haven't really seen any passes from kolb into tight coverage that would fall under the great pass category.  he's made some nice throws in the face of the blitz but he's still getting the ball to open recievers.

either the saints can't cover for ish, the recievers are legit threats to get open now or reid is calling a great game.

Eagles technically winning the game thanks to that blown hold call on the Saints last drive so I'm satisfied at the half. Of course they are losing on the scoreboard, but honestly, when you know your team should be ahead even if it isn't official, it still is just as good.

Like when I paraded down broad street alone after losing in the Superbowl when I found out the Patriots cheated. It felt just as good as actually winning one.

Had special teams not been completely brain dead, this game would have been a frustratingly close loss instead of the yearly blowout.

Maybe, but he has basically nothing to do with why the Eagles lost this game. The defense and special teams have been terrible.

yeah, kolb did 100x better than any of us thought he would.  he made some mistakes but no more or less than any other qb in the league typically makes during the course of a game.

stupid penalties
terrible special teams
terrible defense

when you have all that in a game, it wouldn't really matter who the qb was today.

Yeah and that's disconcerting. I think a lot of us had this chalked up as a loss due to Kolb, but I don't really see this game playing out all that differently with McNabb in there.

Well, the game went down as I expected.  Philly's D kept it close in the first half, and the Saints blew the game open in the second (thanks to turnovers).  Kolb played much better than I expected and the Saints D played maybe just a hair worse than I expected (looked better than last year though).

Kolb looked good 'till that last int, what the farg was he thinking throwing into double coverage like that?? Also, imo, not only did the special teams and D look terrible, the friggen' offensive line had some major break downs. Guys were coming in untouched at Kolb. It's a wonder he looked as good as he did. Actually I was impressed with the way he got off a few of those completions when he was staring defenders right in the face.

Kolb has changed my opinion of him, but still, Eagles could have had friggen' Joe Montana at qb and still would have lost.

This game was a tale of two halves.  You can't turn the ball over deep in your own territory two times in a row against an offense like the Saints.  They actually played o.k. game went kind of how I expected though.   Kolb had a decent game, it would have been completely different with McNabb  in there.
Title: Re: Eagles/Saints Talk

absolutely pathetic effort by the defense, especially on 3rd down.  the corners were awful and the tight ends ran free all day.  the offense wasn't awful, but it wasn't good enough to win either.  special teams farging the defense in the ass all day didn't help things.

I don't think anyone was saying he looks like a #1 QB or anything. He showed he wasn't a complete waste. To me he went from "get him the farg off the team" to "I might wait a bit more til I think he needs to get the farg off team".

worst analysis ever.

don't get me wrong, i don't think kolb will ever be a top tier qb in the nfl but if nothing else, he showed the potential to be a servicable backup.  he'll never justify being a #2 pick though and should still probably get the gas face.

but anyone pinning this loss on kolb is either blinded by hatred of him, an idiot or a combo of both.

Pretty sure you and everyone else on the board (me included) were sure he was going to be the reason the Birds lost. For the most part, he played as well as a person could expect for a guy getting his first start after only a week of playing with the first team. Do I think the dude could have done more? Maybe. Could you make the argument that he was the only guy that kept them in the game for awhile? Absolutely.

Terrible.

1. Special Teams
2. Penalties
3. Defense
4. Turnovers

All in all a solid day for farg ups. They lost the game in the last two minutes of the first half and the two possessions into the second half.

Blantant holding/hands to the face call on Cole missed
Ellis Hobbs coughing it up
Dumb farg throwing an out route to a LB with ONE career INT.

Give the Saints a short field and goodnight Irene. shtein, those clowns can go 99yds in 2 plays...putting them inside the 35 two times ina row is a locked up 14 points.

QuoteSpecial teams played a major factor in the Eagles' 48-22 loss to the Saints Sunday.

To see just how many mistakes were made by this unit, I went back and re-watched every special teams play. Here's a rundown, error by error:

Mishap 1 - Sean Jones, in his first action with the Eagles, is called for a holding penalty, which sets the Eagles back to their own 15 yard line. To Jones' credit, he did make a nice tackle on the Eagles' opening kickoff.

Mishap 2 - DeSean Jackson calls for a fair catch, but (surprise) a flag on the play. This one on Chris Clemons for unnecessary roughness. A 15-yard personal foul -- half the distance to the goal, giving the Eagles' offense the ball at their own 12 yard line. So on the Eagles' first two possessions they started at their own 15 and their own 12. Not exactly helping out a QB making his first career start.

Mishap 3 - Still in the first quarter, mind you, the Eagles are called for an illegal shift on a punt. Joselio Hanson and Quintin Mikell are the players targeted by the official. Sav Rocca's first punt was a good one, a 57-yarder, which would have given the Saints possession at their own 30 yard line. But he was asked to re-kick. And the second one was ugly. It went just 34 yards and gave New Orleans the ball at its own 47. A huge penalty. A difference of 17 yards. The Saints ended up with a field goal on the ensuing drive.

Mishap 4 - I wrote this one down while watching the game. Not a smart play by Jackson. With the score tied at 10, the Eagles were set to receive the punt with 1:57 left in the first half. Jackson backpedaled and fielded it at his own 4 yard line, an obvious no-no. If he lets it go, maybe the Saints down the ball inside the 5. But way more likely, the ball bounces into the end zone and the offense starts at its own 20. Jackson's teammates, undoubtedly surprised at his decision, delivered two blocks in the back. One on Clemons (mentioned above) and the other on Leonard Weaver. The Eagles' offense ended up beginning the drive at its own 3 yard line and went three-and-out. The Saints wisely used their timeouts and got another shot from their own 46 with 1:20 left. It took Brees all of two plays to get in the end zone from there.

Mishap 5 - I wrote about this one right after the game, and it was a momentum-shifter. Ellis Hobbs fumbled the opening kickoff at the start of the second half. It was a good play by Saints rookie Malcolm Jenkins, but it goes without saying that you have to do a better job of protecting the football.

Mishap 6 - It was just comical at this point. With the Eagles trailing, 31-13, in the third quarter, Tracy White was called for holding on a kickoff return. Half the distance to the goal (a commonly used term Sunday). By the way, White is on the roster because of his skills on special teams. That should tell you what kind of day it was for this unit.

Mishap 7 - Hobbs took a third-quarter kickoff 63 yards. Why is this a mishap, you ask? Because his celebration afterwards was so over the top it was beyond ridiculous. I'm generally in favor of players expressing themselves and celebrating, but time and place, people. The Eagles were down 34-13, and Hobbs' earlier fumble changed the complexion of the game. Hobbs pointed to himself and jumped around, but it looked like his teammates knew better. They offered high fives, but nothing more. And if you listen to the fans, it's as if they don't know exactly how to react. Most likely sharing the same reaction as me.

Mishap 8 - Rocca's worst punt of the day drew boos from the frustrated crowd at the Linc. Any time the camera follows the punt and then stops around midfield, you know it's probably not a very good one. This punt went just 26 yards, out of bounds to the Saints' 48 yard line.

So there you have it. Overall six penalties (one declined), a turnover, a costly decision not to let the ball go in the end zone, an ill-advised celebration and two terrible punts.

Unbelievable that they were able to fit so much into one game.

Keep in mind that the Saints' special teams were terrible in Week 1 against the Lions. They allowed a big punt return, a big kickoff return, fumbled a punt and had a field goal blocked. I really thought the Eagles had an edge here going in.

Special teams coach Ted Daisher seemed to really be taking this unit in the right direction during training camp, but it's clear he has a lot of work to do.

The Sav Rocca Experiment should be close to ending.

Inconsistent.

The sports bar I go to gets about 50+ Eagles fans a week. Mostly the same crowd every week for the last three seasons I have been going there. There was a new guy in there today and at the end of the game he decided it would be funny to dump a beer over the head of an old man Cowboy fan. This Cowboy fan is the husband of an Eagles fan who has been going there for years.

I didn't see it happen, but I heard the glass break and the guy do an Eagle chant and run out of the joint. I didn't know he dumped the beer at the time, I was watching Kolb give away points, but a lot of guys followed the guy outside and were about to get into it with him.

He was wasted and his girlfriend ended up dragging him down the street away from the bar.

Of course this has been said a million times and no one wants to hear it, esp since the D and ST lost the game more so, but running the ball from the start and continuously would have at least kept the D off the field somewhat. Can't have that...Andy has gotta prove that his boy Kolb can do it.

I thought going into the half at 17-13 the Eagles still had a fairly decent chance especially since they got the ball back. When Hobbs fumbled, it was game pretty much over. When Kobb threw the pick on the next drive, it was the proverbial nail in the coffin.

What was the run/pass ratio for the first half? Seemed like the Eagles were probably passing more than they should have but I was still surprised to see Kobb with 51 attempts. He did better than I thought, but still don't want to see the guy playing unless the Eagles are up by at least 2 TDs; dook's an interception machine

As was well covered on this thread all week leading up to kickoff, if this game came down to Kolb having to win it with his arm and trying to match the Saints TD for TD the birds were screwed.  Defense had to hold the Saints to less than 24 to have a chance.  Being outscored 31 - 9 in the second half is just pathetic.

My god, that list of ST miscues is ridiculous.

This was how I felt.  Kolb wasn't as bad as expected, in fact drove the ball down the field on several drives.  Missed a few times, unfortunately at key points in the game, but it was his first start.  He probably doesn't deserve the vitriol he's getting here.

Save that for the horrific LB corp and the STs.  Christ, we'll be seing a lot of TEs getting big games this year, by the looks of it.

They threw the ball 51 times and ran barely over 20 attempts. 1st game failure. 2nd is lack of sustaining drives, led to the defense being on the field all game and winded. This is because of the pass happy offense. Even with a sub-par QB in, they still can't stop passing.

Actually the were doing a fairly good job of running a balanced offense in the first half.  But when you end up being down 18 points in a matter of minutes it is going to kill your game plan.

Like DMF said; in the first half they were running.

But when you come out of the locker room and you're down 31-13 before people get back from taking a piss, you have to throw it to catch up

I don't think they were running it even in the first half. There were probably only 6 legitimate runs and about another 4 out of the wildcat which I guess counts, but still probably doesn't put it at 50% run/pass ratio. This is just by memory so I'm probably completely wrong

Wasnt there like a 3rd and 6 where reid ran a qb option to the outside with Kolb at qb? I thought that was pretty cute.

Yeah, having the least athletic QB running outside to be killed is cute, I guess.

Make putting Garcia in there easier though.

QuoteI was at that game yesterday. Great seats. 10 rows back on the Saints side. I came into the game not sure what to expect with Kolb back there and the O-Line mess. Other than Shockey the Saints are a likeable team and not one to get upset about a loss to. Until it happened that is.

I could not believe what I saw Payton do and say to the fans towards the end of the game. When the Saints scored to make it 41-21 he came back close to the fans and started waiving them away yelling "Go Home - the beating is over. Go home! Then he put his left hand up with 4 fingers up and the right with 1. he literally did this for about 10 minutes yelling at the fans and the fans yelling back. It pissesd me off to the point that I started yelling back that it's freakin September, Payton. There was actually some large assistant coach holding him back and telling him to stop. I'm sure this got little to no media play. My buddy next to me didn't even see it go down until I started yelling

So during the game (indicated by the 41 points) he found 10 minutes to taunt the Philly fans and it didn't make it on tv?  Payton might be the classiest coach in the league and this post goes against everything we've seen from him since '06.  Maybe Rex Ryan, but not Payton sorry.

Actually I was here last week:
Sept 16th
"This is the key for you guys.  Most teams haven't been able to stop Brees early.  That is why the Saints spent money in the offseason getting value and depth in the secondary.  They figure since Brees scores on teams so quickly, we need to focus on stopping the pass first.  Though you can't ignore the fact that the run D for the Saints in the preseason and in the first real game has been pretty impressive... even if their opponents aren't rushing world beaters."

Hahaha.  This coming from a fan who probably booed his QB after making his second bad throw on the day.  You wouldn't know what being a fan is.  The Saints have had a waiting list of 60,000 for season tickets for the last 4 years. The city only has 390,000 people and none of them boo their team.

Ahhh the classic Katrina rip. Both creative and classy.  I guess there is nothing else to say when you go 1-4 against someone and realize that the one thing you thought you had in the bank this season, your defense, is soft.  Good luck booing the rest of the season.

That is absolutely false.  The game was sold out after the Monday night opener with the Falcons but good try once again.  Let me get this right, the more you care about your team, the more you boo?  I learn something new every day.  I would rather hang with Saints fans than a bunch of insecure meatheads any day of the week.

Though you can't ignore the fact that the run D for the Saints in the preseason and in the first real game has been pretty impressive... even if their opponents aren't rushing world beaters.

i love the city of new orleans and was there when they "lucked out" and got reggie bush and everyone was going crazy.  there was a big ad in the paper about how there were still tons of season tickets left.  at $5 a game.  i'm pretty sure that was only 3 years ago.
