Giants are a 4.5-pt favorite, O/U 40.5

I get to be driving to Nashville next Sunday during the game, with two sales directors I will have known for about 1 hour by game time.
Not looking good for the new career.

If the Eagles play like this did tonight they'll lose. That being said farg THE GIANTS
Defense was decent, not great, in the first 2½ quarter. Then they turned it freakin' ON.
McNabb was good, considering the pressure he faced.
Westbrook was held in check, except for the one play. That's what the stars do.
OL was horrible.

Besides that... I don't bet on the Eagles in the postseason. Never have. My bet with you will have a direct negative effect on the Eagles' performance on Sunday.

I think the defense will continue to get after the run well. And it cannot be discounted how bad the Giants have played since Plax went down. Momentum is a helluva thing and the Eagles have it. The Giants struggled the last month and had a bye.
I will have to look it up, but I remember reading a few weeks ago that in the last 8 games the Giants only had 12 sacks.

the first game they owned us on Time of poss. rushing, etc. etc. and we almost beat them.

I was waiting for it the entire second half last night, and then "Westbrook is at the 30, the 40, midfield, 40, 30, the 20, 10, TOUCHDOWNNNNN Brian Westbrook". I was stunned and amazed!
The Vikings don't rate as a perfect moment. Neither do the Giants. Now, Carolina in their stadium for a rematch, that's a perfect moment to rip your heart out of your chest, make you watch it beat once or twice, and stomp it.
best situation going for the Eagles right now:
1) momentum in general
2) lagging Giants defensive front/offensive play
3) decision making by McNabb
4) special teams
5) run containment
worst situation going for the Eagles:
1) Giants rested
2) coming off a very emotional win
Thats all I see as an advantage by the Giants. The Eagles, reagardless of the less than dominating win already burned them-Jacobs or no Jacobs. Westbrook as a receiver in the slot has already shown that he can burn the Giants LB's and I think it will pay off again this game

I've never been a big fan of "most people", the media, or pundits.
Who says they are down? They are the #1 seed in the NFC, defending superbowl champs. Who knows they may show up and kick the living shtien out of us. To be the man you gotta beat the man, and they are the man, and I want the birds to be the man, so we need to beat them, the man, so we can be well you get it.
Only way the Eagles win is if they rush the ball somewhere between 30-40 carries. Buck gets 10-15 carries and Westbrook the rest, McNabb has 0 turnovers and rushes for a few first downs, and the defense forces 3rd and longs for Eli.
Basically everything they did in the last game. But since this is Reid I expect the opposite.
I say around the 2nd quarter, 3rd and 3...something like this outta happen again

QuoteIn the Eagles' nine wins, running back Brian Westbrook has averaged 18.9 attempts and nearly 80 yards per game. He's averaged 4.2 yards per carry and picked up six rushing touchdowns. In the team's six losses (and the tie), Westbrook barely averaged over three yards per carry. And Reid only called 13 runs a game in those losses. It seems pretty simple that more attempts seem to translate to more success, but Reid's a stubborn man.
I don't like Andy Reid.
I doubt it means much, but I don't like hearing everyone pick the Eagles. Only a handful of analysts have gone with the Giants from what I have heard listening to and watching NFLN and ESPN and ESPNRadio.
I have no idea how anyone can pick the Eagles to win this game. It is definitely winnable and I basically think its a toss up, but with the Giants playing at home after a bye? Come on now.
If you "basically think it's a toss up" then you should easily see how some can pick the eagles to win.
I believe the giants have a terrible post bye record.
In the event of a toss up it makes sense to go with the home team. It makes even more sense to go with the home team coming off of a bye week. It doesn't make sense to go with a visiting team that is notorious for being inconsistent.
Most of the reasons given have been ones that I also believe in. I think they are going to win this game mainly because of the momentum, the defense and because the Giants have struggled offensively and defensively the last month or so.
They are beatable for sure. If the run game is shut down, can Eli beat them over the top with Hixon, Toomer and Smith?
the eagles could win and i feel better about this than i should but the giants will win...better disciplined better coached team that will do all the little things to pull it out
eagles lose the turnover battle miss a fg or two and shank a few punts and that will be the difference in the game
I do worry about Rocca in this one, good point. He punted horribly in windy conditions this year. He has to be on point because this should be a field position game.
And we know that Pimp will be pretty much neutralized by Feagles' directional punting. I think he still burns from kicking it to Westbrook in 2003; since then he pretty much punts everything out of bounds.
I still don't see how you have no idea how anyone can pick the eagles, though.

Injured players Shawn Andrews and Victor Abiamiri were medically cleared to practice Wednesday.
Andrews, a two-time Pro Bowl guard, has been cleared by his doctors and will practice Wednesday for the first time since sustaining a back injury in Week 2 at Dallas. But, as head coach Andy Reid noted, Andrews will not be active for Sunday's divisional playoff game against the Giants.
"We're not going to force anything there or do anything ridiculous," Reid said. "We'll gradually work him in and see how he feels. We'll see what he can do day-to-day."
Andrews underwent surgery on Oct. 21 to correct a herniated disc in his back. Reid said that while Andrews is in great cardio shape, he hasn't lifted or played football in quite some time.
"We'll take it one step at a time," said Reid, adding that he has not ruled out the possibility of Andrews playing again this season provided the team's playoff fortunes extend beyond Sunday's game at the Meadowlands.
As for Abiamiri, the second-year defensive end could be back in action this week after missing the regular season finale and the wild-card game with a Lis Franc sprain of his foot. In 10 games this season, the reserve has played well against the run and chipped in two sacks among his 22 tackles. He also forced a fumble and was credited with six quarterback hurries.
Three players who will not practice Wednesday include running back Brian Westbrook (knee), right tackle Jon Runyan (knee) and fullback Dan Klecko (shoulder).
ROSTER MOVE: Rookie lineman Mike McGlynn (torn hamstring) was placed on Injured Reserve on Wednesday. The team filled the open roster spot by adding cornerback Dimitri Patterson, who recently spent time on the Chiefs practice squad.

"The Giants were 10-1 and averaging a league-leading 31.6 points when Burress shot himself in the thigh and was suspended for the rest of the season. They're 2-3 and have averaged 18.5 points without him.
The Giants could have used another game to get the offense back in sync. It doesn't seem like a good time to play an Eagles defense that's hitting its stride.
Johnson tweaked the defense during a three-game skid, starting Akeem Jordan at weakside linebacker instead of Omar Gaither. Jordan hasn't put up Pro Bowl numbers, but his penetration and dirty work has enabled teammates to get the glory.
Johnson also got a little help from head coach Andy Reid and coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who simplified the offense. Instead of a down-the-field attack, the Eagles have played with more of a dink-and-dunk, time-of-possession philosophy the past six games.
Jordan cracked the starting lineup in the final game of a three-game skid. The Eagles were leaking oil badly, having allowed an average of 28.3 points during that 0-2-1 disaster. The defense had collected three turnovers in the three games while the offense turned the ball over 11 times, including eight interceptions.
They've allowed 12.3 points per game in winning five of their past six games, including the playoff success over the Vikings.
The Eagles have forced 13 turnovers and scored three defensive touchdowns the last six games. The offense has averaged 28.5 points in that time."

Quote"The purpose of the phrase is to motivate and to remind everybody that we are at the point where it is necessary to do whatever we have to do to succeed," Coughlin said. "A week or so ago I came home and Judy was watching the movie 'Men of Honor' with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro. It is a moving story about Carl Brashear and his desire to become the first African American Navy Diver, and it is about a man who was determined and focused and willing to do whatever he had to do to realize his objective. And he reached his goal despite people telling him he wouldn't and in spite of people's efforts to prevent him from doing it. If you have a goal or objective that is important to you, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it. So when somebody says: How can I get to the next level? The response is: How important is it to you? That's the message."
I couldnt think of more de-motivating catch phrase than that...congrats Tom.
Men Of Honor is a hell of a good movie though.
CUT IT OFF frightens me

4-7 inches of snow expect tomorrow for the NYC area. I think NJ will get something similar and the on Sunday what was previously thought to be a cold sunny day with little winds has not been upgraded to 30mph winds and colder than expected.
Chance of Reid calling a similar game to when they last played the Giants?
80/20
he fargin better call the same game plan or we are toast
chance of eli throwing for more than 150 yards = zero
11 in the box
I prefer the wind because of what IGY said.
McNabb can throw in the wind, Eli cannot.
Stack the box.
regardless...it makes feel a hell of a lot better knowing Domenik Hixon is their big play WR threat
McNabb might throw a little better in the wind, but don't act like he's amazing. Reid throws when the wind is above 20mph over 45 times every time. And despite Donovan's gun, he still throws wormburners and throws erratically.
he does that if its not windy tho...eli cant complete passes over 8 yards in the wind
Yeah, the pass to Hixon in December missed by a mile. And that was what, 40 yds downfield?
The wind was at his back on that pass.
with the wind and it might have been like 20 yards downfield...if youre talking about the overthrow along the sideline when dawk was all over hixon
I think he's talking about the pass about 50 yards downfield that just clanked off of Hixon's hands.

ATV's prediction for results of the big game coming up:
At the final whistle Jeffrey Lurie will still be a billionaire, most of the players on the Eagles will still be muilti-millionaires, and nearly everyone on here will still be willing to transfer cash from your wallets to theirs just so long as you recieve cheap green and silver plastic crap from China in return.

The stage is set.
Beat the Giants and they go to the SB.
my official prediction:
i thought the eagles had a decent chance to win before last night but arizona winning made it virtually no chance...no way do three straight road teams win this weekend...i dont think the giants kill them but they are the world champions won the division and all year were the better team...i think that they control the game from the start and dont kill the birds but win easily and afterwords youre gonna hear a lot of "farg the doubters" talk from the ny players...in the end they are just the more solid consistent know what they are doing team combine that with being at home and they win 17-7 or 20-9 or maybe even 20-14 but the game will never be as close as the score
Eagles 23
Giants 17
Of all the reasons to now say they'll lose, because too many road teams already won is the dumbest.
Eagles by 6? I've been saying that all week to my Giants fan buddies. Now that Rome agrees, I can't decide.
The MOV will be either 6 or 9. My premonition might have some form of dyslexia.

superstition is the nadir of human consciousness; you'd fit right in at the church of latter day saints with this kind of thinking
if youve bet before you know its all about trends...and especially trends that end with the words "has never happened before"
we've never had a black president before, so I guess that is impossible
no team ever lost all sixteen games in a season; also impossible

Dio is dropping knowledge this morning.
I'm not worried about trends and I'm not worried about can'ts and nevers. I'm worried about a team that controlled its own destiny in week 16 and went into DC and put on the most gutless display of the season. The path is laid out before them and they have failed miserably in this situation too recently for me to be the slightest bit comfortable.

trends matter in sports more than anyone can imagine...the sports gods know what they are doing...that said the fact that the giants are a more professional been there done that before not skitzophrenic team playing at home is what will make the difference imo...it wont be pretty it wont be a rout and there also wont be a time in the game where you ever feel the eagles have a real chance to win...its going to be a slow and methodical

Just a matter of which one you put more stock into.
Go ahead and tell me how the Dallas game doesn't matter because of what they didn't do... more than what the Eagles did.
You're right. The Eagles came out and got that ass against Dallas with their season on the line. But that just shows how completely bipolar this team is.
And yes, let's face it, Dallas did everything they could to hand that game to the Birds.

I completely agree with the bipolar nature of this team. I just finished telling a co-workerhow it's amazing to me how the Eagles can go from dominating the Steelers, Cowboys and Giants to tying the farging Bengals in a matter of weeks. All I can do is hope the right guys show up today... because if they do, I like our chances.
but you also have to have the giants guys not show up because they are a better team and if both teams show up eagles lose...and thats pretty much where im at...giants are rested ready and at home i dont see how they dont put a good performance forth...i think the eagles play ok but lose
I don't see how the Giants are the better team without Plaxico. If Jacobs is 100% then maybe but he's not.
without plaxico i'm not convinced the Giants are that much better, i think it's marginal
Whore.
I think Plaxico's loss for the Giants means more against a team with corners like the Eagles than it does against some other opponents. Jaworski was showing that in the first meeting the Eagles shifted safety help over top on Burress' side almost every play, and in the second meeting the corners were playing almost exclusive man with Dawkins and Mikell in the box to stop the run. That's the reason that I think the Eagles could win this game. The D lets Samuel and Sheldon shut down Hixon/Toomer/etc, brings the safeties into the box, and slows down the run. If they can do that, they win the game.
That being said, I still have a bad feeling about it today. Knowing that if they beat the Giants, all that's stopping a trip to Tampa is the Arizona farging Cardinals is terrifying.
:paranoid
I had a dream i was fighting with a guy selling tshirts for 70 bucks a piece at the Linc that said "NFC Champs". So with that, i'll pick the giants to win. If the birds do win, i hope i dream about nailing Jenna Haze and Belladonna like matty did last night
Bree Olsen for the motherfarging win.
I have bad feelings about this game.
Could also be the upset stomach I have.
Anyway if they somehow miraculously pull this off...WATCH OUT BRENDA WE COMING FOR THAT MAN ASS.

See, I'm not so sure they're a better team. Better record, yeah... but the Eagles have really underachieved a lot this year... all the while being sabatoged by bad coaching. When this team is on... there aren't too many teams that can really farg with them... and in my mind, that includes the Giants... especially with no Plaxico. He was the key that dictated the way the Eagles had to play defensively, keeping a safety over the top all game instead of being able to sell out against the run. Now that the Eagles are able to do that more often... I think if they can stop or slow the run, they can get up on the Giants. Scoring against them has not been a problem this year.
Ready for your Yay/farg stat of the day?
Yay - The Eagles are 5-3 in their last 8 games at the Giants.
farg - The Giants have won 6 of the last 9 against the Eagles.
I agree with that. I think the difference between the two is marginal, if not dead on even. The Giants are better in some areas but lack in others; same for the Birds.
But I share IGY's worry about the road teams. I posted about it last night in the other thread...
But I have had a good feeling all week long. And while nervous right now, I am still confident that they will win....
Eagles - 20
Giants - 13

Prediction:
Ive read enough of these previous predictions to make me think that the Eagles will lose today based off of the Giants are at home, they are rested, they have Jacobs, they are a better football team and the ever amazing home playoff trend, etc.
What I havent heard, except for Feva and Dio in so many words, is the fact that what youre seeing here in these playoffs so far is not an aberration. Teams that play well and gain momentum down the stretch win no matter who you are and where they go in the playoffs. Just because the Cardinals went into Carolina doesn't automatically exclude the Eagles from driving an 1.5 hrs up the road and beating that ass...that trend means garbage as parity in the nfl these days is squashing way too many past trends
I think this Eagles team is the better team "right now" which will prove to be the deciding factor today and as long as McNabb doesnt pull a Jake Delhomme it will be as close as the score dictates... with all nails bit off by the start of the 4th
Eagles 20
Giants 17
No Greggie today, so now the loss is a lock.
The main thing that worries me about this game is that Jacobs seems to be healthy. If the Giants can establish a good ground attack, then Coughlin can mix the pass in picking the right times to do it, and make Manning a lot more effective.

In a bit of a surprise, fullback Dan Klecko, listed as doubtful for Sunday's game with a shoulder injury, was active against the Giants.
Inactive for the Eagles were third quarterback A.J. Feeley, cornerback Dimitri Patterson, running back Lorenzo Booker, linebacker Joe Mays, defensive end Bryan Smith, wide receiver Greg Lewis and tight end Matt Schobel.
Inactive for the Giants were running back Danny Ware, linebacker Gerris Wilkinson, tackle Adam Koets, defensive end Dave Tollefson, defensive tackle Leger Douzable, wide receiver Mario Manningham and two former Eagles – cornerback Rashad Barksdale and defensive tackle Jeremy Clark.
Hmmm...Coughlin has never won a playoff game at home with the Giants... ::)

yeah the cardinals were just tearing the league up down the stretch....everything was pointing towards them having a long playoff run
the eagles played one of the worst games ever in a must win situation just three weeks ago...how is that them being hot down the stretch
and the giants were so much better than the eagles that it wasnt even close with plaxico and him being out doesnt all of a sudden mean the two teams are equal...robbins tuck and jacobs being banged up was way bigger than plax being out...giants are better along both lines and at coach and are rested and are at home and know what it takes to be a championship team...thats all equals a much bigger advantage than plaxico being out is a disadvantage
if both teams show up and the ginats dont shtein the bed...meaning eli coughing thye ball up a few times then i think they win...i dont think the eagles will out play the giants like they did last month...they need to giants to hand them something or do something unusual like a trick play or two or a return td
Quotethey need to giants to hand them something or do something unusual like a trick play or two or a return td
the only advantage the Giants have in this game is the run game-- thats it. you wont find another apple to apples comparison to say differently. If the Birds stay disciplined and hold their gaps they win. they dont need the Giants to hand them anything.
youre just not as usual giving enough credit to the Eagles defense that was playing well below their caliber of play before 5 of the last 6 games...for christs sake forget the Skins loss IGY because the Eagles obviously have
The Giants coach, OL and DL are definitely better than the Eagles'. The Eagles are better everywhere else.

Its that simple. Where as Coughlin will stick what works for his team and his personnel, Reid will try to force a passing game and neglect the running game.

Nice catch LJ
LJ Smith makes a play woo.
That was a dangerous throw to LJ.
Ever since Joe Buck pointed out Pierce talking about Jackson's head....I've noticed Jackson turn his head left right before he snaps it every time....They're gonna start noticing that sooner or later and anticipate...
what a shocker just like last week, a punt
how do mcnabb not know a freakin blitz is coming can they run a slant, a simple freakin slant route, he can't throw into the wind like that. stupid.

nice save by Sheldon.
Bradley is white and slow that is all.
nice coverage stewart
Gotta stop giving up big chunks like that.
Need to stop them where they are now and force another 35+ yard field goal attempt.
Boss and lack of pass rush killing the team.
McNabb of old would have juked the blitzer and ran for positive yards.

That counter screen to Heath Sherman was a thing of beauty. Always worked.
Wow, that helps us.
Terrible 2 min drill coming up.
Have they thrown to Westbrook once?
I feel more points coming for the gints this half.
C'mon Demps

phew!
Nice shot....Blah.
Make this FG Akers. Go into the half up 10-8.
WOOOOO! Nice.
And they get the ball in the 3rd.
great drive, nice end
farg yeah
nice break for the defense.
Gotta start the half off right. Wind will be behind them, have to put up points and yards.
Offense sucks right now and McNabb did throw that INT but other than that hes been pretty good. No real bad throw and he is putting zip on the ball.
2 pt lead going into half...they need to come out and score a TD.
To end the half with the lead after the brutal offensive performance is huge.
Hopefully the O can feed off the two-minute drill and do some more of that.

Fast Forward 6 years and I'm a you know what :-D
I feel better after that last drive. They moved the ball well and the O-line did their job. Team needs to step up and close this shtein out. I'm pretty sure they're saving a big Westbrook play for the 2nd half. When he's shut down they usually make a D forget about him then scheme a pass for him that goes big.
Haha Christ. I don't think I've been there in months. Between CF and some various music message boards, my internet message board nerd quota is high enough. This place is much more efficient when it comes to Eagles news than TATE. Or PTATE for that matter.
I coulda made Mod....if I wasn't 13 years old.
I can't say I'm upset or happy about the first half.
Just want to get this going ....dam half time can take a long time.
I gotta say I'm happy with the half just because they went into half time with the lead. Visiting the rested top seed in cold windy conditions, I don't know if you can ask for much more.
Now they gotta go out there and finish it. Defense needs to play just as good, if not better, and the O needs to do a better job all around.

Thats consistent with his starts every time he's amped up.
I love that this is a smash mouth NFC East battle on both parts. I mean, the Eagles are running the ball more than they're passing it. Solid defense, bad weather, hard hits, can't ask for much more.
well hopefully Dmac has settled down, the last drive was a nice plodding drive, I know they were in prevent, but hopefully we can adjust our playcalling to match their pressure.
I hate to give up points, but that safety might have saved a td or fg
Nice return by Demps.
dang it.
farging a.

nice hit by cal, poly techer
And somehow we know if that had been an Eagles DL, the ball drops to the ground.

The white guys have the dropsies today.
They better put Demps out there for Mikell and not Considine.
Whitey does just fine on ST's....leave him there.
Big first down. And then Kevin Curtis drops a farging beauty.....That was the big play they needed. Chrisssssssst. COME ON CURTIS.
I know everyone hates when Donovan is smiling and laughing, but I honestly think he plays better when he's like that. Seeing him all frowny and tight makes me nervous.
That was SWEET pass protection.
Disappointing ending, but a great drive nonetheless.
O-line has pulled it together. Whatever its the lead and we don't have the wind.
Well, they got the lead back.
Need a big play from the D.
ya...nice drive.
We just have to keep it up
Dammit! Eli finally connected on one of those long passes.

my official prediction:
i thought the eagles had a decent chance to win before last night but arizona winning made it virtually no chance...no way do three straight road teams win this weekend...
you suck, officially
hah.
Quoterobbins tuck and jacobs being banged up was way bigger than plax being out...giants are better along both lines and at coach and are rested and are at home and know what it takes to be a championship team...thats all equals a much bigger advantage than plaxico being out is a disadvantage
if both teams show up and the ginats dont shtein the bed...meaning eli coughing thye ball up a few times then i think they win...i dont think the eagles will out play the giants like they did last month...they need to giants to hand them something or do something unusual like a trick play or two or a return td
nah... this sucks a hell of a lot more
actually my prediction was eerily on point for once...they would win if eli coughed up some garbage and the winds were tight and thats exactly what happened

Jacobs said in the postgame that the Giants were the only team that had a shot of knocking the Eagles out and now they're gonna win the Super Bowl and he'll jump on the bandwagon. Free agent.
Ed, I swear to god I will hunt you down and punch your neck if you start getting my hopes up about Jacobs being a free agent. I wanted them to draft his soft ass years ago and the idea of he and Westbrook makes my woodrow pop smaller woodrows of its own.
do you think he played this well this year because his love of the game?
contract year does wonders
Jacobs has many faults, but he is a beast and exactly the type of player I've been begging for the Eagles to add and utilize for years.
WHen he was coming out of college, they liked him.
As a TE.
Ward is a FA too, so it's unlikely the Giants will keep both.
Another fun Giants stat: McDougle finished the regular season + postseason with 2 tackles total.....half as many as their starting guard Chris Snee...
eagles won't invest that much $$$ in the rb position.

Just like Westbrook. I'd rather have them split time and reduce their injury risk while maximizing productivity.
Good Gawd, what Eagle fan wouldn't want to see Jacobs in Eagle green running behind that massive line??

its very debatable if the Phils took more heat than the Eagles this year. Andy/management has been getting abused right and left, same with Donovan and rightfully so--but do you really care how fans respond to a "told you so" comment after hoisting a lombardi? They should say that...I would after getting sucker-punched every day of the week by analysts and the philly media.... I mean...
Do you really think the fans, except you, are going to say, "I cant believe Andy and Donovan said I told you so...farg them!" Fans dont give a damn in this town what you do as long as you win--and the Birds will be more beloved if they win believe that.

Wow! You nailed that.
23 rushes
5 for Buck
McNabb 2 turnovers
Plenty of 3rd and shorts
So much for your hypothesis

Good stuff there, chief.
Not really. I'm bringing it like Eli in a home playoff game.
A couple of thoughts; I would hate to be Coughlin's dog, I know he went home and took out his frustrations on it. Why did the Giant OC refuse to give the ball to Jacobs on second down? It seemed they could gain 6,7,8 yards on first and he would jog off the field. I guess maybe they were saving him for the next game.
The Giants coaches made some strange play calls, that's for sure. No screens. No slants. Passing on 2nd and 5 when the running game was working.
It was like they caught a case of Reiditis in a way.

Defensively they put too much emphasis on shutting Westbrook down. They did an outstanding job on him but in the 2nd half the Eagles did a good job of getting away from him and involving other players. The Giants never adjusted, I guess they figured they'd take their chances and not give up the homerun ball.

QuoteAfterward, I asked Bradley what happened. He said the Giants' backs did a great job using their blocks and sliding off them earlier in the year, and the Eagles were able to better fill the gaps in short yardage this game. And he had an interesting theory: Blame Manning's cadence.
"We had a pretty good idea of his cadence,'' Bradley said on the bus ride back to Philadelphia. The happy bus ride, from the sounds in the background. "When you play a guy three times in a season, you can pick up certain things. The tempo of his voice, how he puts his head up when he's getting ready to snap the ball ... it helped us today.''

Don't sleep on Philly son!
Whitlock with another "how's my ass taste" editorial (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9067480/NFL-Truths:-Still-think-McNabb%27s-a-loser?)
QuoteI told you in November that the fools making a big deal about Donovan McNabb's ignorance of NFL overtime rules didn't know what the hell they were talking about.
Do you think anyone cares that McNabb didn't know regular-season games could end in a tie? Is his unfamiliarity with the rulebook still an indelible stain on his legacy? One of the most embarrassing gaffes in recent sports history? The gaffe to beat all gaffes? Is McNabb's NFL IQ still in need of testing?
Or now, after he took the Eagles into Giants Stadium and derailed the defending champions, is the media overreaction to McNabb's innocent mistake yet another stain on our legacy? Is it one more indication that we don't know what the hell we're doing or talking about?
Somehow I think football fans will remember McNabb for leading the Eagles to five NFC championship games in 10 years more than they'll remember a regular-season tie at Cincinnati.
But that's just me. I'm an unabashed McNabb fan who felt like Sunday's victory was the vindication McNabb needed to silence his many critics. He's not Tom Brady (or even Peyton Manning). But McNabb is a winner, the third-best quarterback of his era. (I don't include Brett Favre in McNabb's era.)
I place McNabb slightly ahead of Kurt Warner because Warner spent the middle five seasons of his 11-year career looking like an Arena League flash-in-the-pan. If Warner and the Cardinals win on Sunday, McNabb will fall to No. 4 on my list behind Captain Kurt.
But if McNabb gets the Birds past Arizona and wins the Super Bowl, then you might hear me arguing that McNabb is Peyton Manning's equal. McNabb has never had the kind of offensive supporting cast that Manning has had in Indy. The year the Eagles had Terrell Owens, McNabb put up Manning-like numbers (31 TDs and 9 INTs) and carried the Eagles to the Super Bowl.
If McNabb ever managed to win multiple Super Bowls, you'd have to compare him to John Elway, the man I believe is the greatest football player to ever play the game. I'm not putting McNabb on Elway's level. I'm saying McNabb is starting to look like a poor man's Elway.
Early in his career Elway never had receivers equal to his playmaking ability. Elway never won Super Bowls until late in his career, when he was supported by Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe and Rod Smith. And Elway experienced his most success after his spellbinding athleticism died of wear, tear and old age.
Could we be witnessing the same thing with McNabb? We'll know more on Sunday. Until then, let's just wait see if Warren Sapp and the other McNabb critics man up and acknowledge they made way too much of a harmless error.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm watching the same game as the television broadcasters. Troy Aikman is my favorite football color commentator and I love the Fox studio show, but I was disappointed with their analysis of the Eagles-Giants.
Andy Reid demonstrated what frustrates Philly fans about him and what delights them all in the same game.
Philly's offense did nothing for the 28 minutes, 30 seconds of the first half because Reid ran the ball on damn near every first-down play. To be exact, he ran on first down on eight of nine plays during Philly's first five possessions. His lone pass was a 13-yard strike to DeSean Jackson on the Eagles' first offensive play of the game. After that, it was eight straight first-down runs that accumulated minus-1 yards.
You can't score points lining up 2nd-and-10 on every possession. If not for Eli Manning's gift interception and Asante Samuel's run to the New York 2, Philly's offense would've been a total embarrassment.
Luckily, the Eagles got the ball back with 84 seconds left in the first half, forcing Reid to throw the football on run downs. McNabb led a 12-play, 68-yard drive that featured five passes and one spike on six first-down plays. The Eagles kicked a field goal to take a 10-8 halftime lead.
And they came out in the second half throwing the football on first down.
Including the drive just before halftime, the Eagles scored two field goals and a touchdown with a pass-first mentality on four consecutive possessions. The lone possession that failed was thwarted by a batted-ball interception.
The Eagles took control of the game, going up 20-11, thanks to 8-of-14 passing on first down for 56 yards. That's right. During the critical stretch of the contest, the Eagles threw the ball on 14 of 17 first-down plays. Three of McNabb's 14 passes were dropped and one pass was spiked to stop the clock.
Once the Eagles had a two-possession lead, Reid went back to his run-first mentality. On his five remaining first-down plays, Reid ran four times and had McNabb take a knee once.
Reid stuck with the run too long, adjusted beautifully and then returned to the run to milk the clock. Reid is the most frustratingly brilliant coach I've ever followed. If I could talk to him during games, I swear he'd have as many Super Bowls as Bill Belichick.

Kurt Warner vs. Brian Dawkins is a mismatch ... in Warner's favor.
Dawkins is a wonderful leader. He's still good in run support. But when you watch him play the pass in January, you see why the Eagles are reluctant to give the 35-year-old a new contract.
Warner is willing to hold the ball and take a hit in order to get the ball down field to his receivers. Warner's courage is going to bite Dawkins in the ass. You can get deep on Dawkins, and you can make plays down the seam on Dawkins. His recovery speed just isn't there.
Plaxico Burress would've scored three times on Sunday, and the Giants would've run for 300 yards. With Plax on the field, Jim Johnson would've had to line Dawkins up at the goal line regardless of field position or down and distance.

Memo to Tom Coughlin: You looked foolish running Brandon Jacobs wide against the Eagles.
Jacobs is a downhill, between-the-tackles runner. He loses power, confidence and intimidation when he angles his shoulders toward the sideline. The Eagles celebrated every time Jacobs went anywhere near the outside shoulder of an offensive tackle.
I hate it when coaches are too stupid, too gutless and/or too cute to stick with what is obviously working. These damn coordinators are always auditioning for jobs at this time of the year. They want to show off their ability to be "creative."

would you add a play clock buzzer?
I think that would be an improvement.
id have a red light like in basketball...that way on a replay you can see if the ligh turns red before the ball was snapped...but the idea in general is a good one...right now its a total judgement call which is stoopid when youre are dealing with something that is as certain as time
a buzzer AND a light then, we are agreed!
It hasn't been talked about at all, and I'm surprised, but Eli has never won a home playoff game, and the Giants haven't won one since 2000.
and the Giants haven't won playoff games in back-to-back seasons since 85-86

**long post warning--if you dont want to read it move along**
I picked this post from another site but thought it was kind of crazy. I know its hard for some of us to grasp (as I am a famous basher of McNabb in here) but there is some eeriness in the stats vs these two guys..and I think one Superbowl win--you do almost have to put him right up there with Elway
Its funny because Denver started to give up on Elway when they drafted Maddox--same can be said when the Eagles drafted Kolb.
Both started at the age of 23 (1983 for Elway and 1999 for McNabb) and were/are 32 years of age during their 10th season in the NFL. Look at their career stats after each of them played 10 seasons. Elway started in 142 games, While McNabb started in 130 of them.
John Elway after 10 seasons:
2,375 Completions
4,039 Attempts
.588 Completion %
30,216 Passing Yards
148 Touchdowns
157 Interceptions
Donovan McNabb after 10 seasons:
2,534 Completions
4,303 Attempts
.589 Completion %
29,320 Passing Yards
194 Touchdowns
90 Interceptions
At this point, Elway had a 6-6 Playoff Record. He lost in the wildcard his first year, had a bye two years later and lost at home in the divisional. Two years after that, he won the divisional then the afc championship game then lost in the Super Bowl. The year after that, 10-4-1 Denver (A Tie! LOL) returned to the Super Bowl, winning in the divisional and the AFC championship game and then lost badly in the Super Bowl. They missed the playoffs the following year, and then returned to the Super Bowl after winning in the divisional and AFC Championship game, but losing very badly. Elway played marginally in at least one or two of these Super Bowls. Denver made one final trip to the AFC Championship game in 1991, Elway's 9th season as a starter, but lost. In season 10, he finished 8-8.
That makes 5 AFC Championship Games and 3 Super Bowl appearances, all losses.
McNabb, by comparison, has been hurt much more than Elway, and has missed way more games. He's gone to Four NFC Championship Games (now 5) and one Super Bowl, of which he lost in spectacular fashion. That's a playoff record of 8-5. Miracle of all miracles, let's say that this is the dream season and the Eagles win the Super Bowl. McNabb would be 11-5 as a starter in the playoffs, and would then have, after 10 years, just as many NFC Championship Game appearances (5) as Elway up to this point, one less Super Bowl appearance, and a Lombardi Trophy.
Even with all his injuries, McNabb's stats are very similar to Elway in terms of Passing Yardage and Completion %. McNabb DESTROYS Elway when it comes to Touchdowns and Interceptions thrown.
I couldnt believe it myself...and if he does accomplish a SB win, he most likely still will not get the respect from Philly or around the nation as one of the all time best because of his poor mechanics
Elway didn't start winning Super Bowls until the Broncos got legitimate weapons (Davis, Sharp & Rod Smith). What Donovan has done with the mediocrity he's been forced to play with all these years is nothing short of astounding.
His poor mechanics? Are you watching the same guy I am?

After Sunday's game, I can't complain about a couple of worm burners per game. He keeps plays alive when he needs to, and his passes don't float away when it gets a little windy.
Also, he can throw on the move with the best of them. His mechanics have never been an issue, it's been his accuracy at times that he's had problems with.
Hard to get more accurate than hitting your #1 receiver in the helmet.

Really, we can laugh at that now, especially with the catches Curtis made after that gaffe. But I wasn't laughing when it happened.

good point. Terrell Davis was amazing while he was healthy and definately helped ease some of the burden Elway had to carry all those years. I have often compared McNabb's career to Elway's although I do think playing in the NFC East from 1999 -08 is much more brutal than the AFC West of 1983 - 99.

I was flat out pissed. At that point, it was still a tight defensive battle where points and field position were at a premium. Now, it's all good.
I slapped myself in the face with both hands somewhat harder than I had intended. The child in the room laughed a lot at that.

i literally had a seizure when that happened
I had the seizure when we found out the flag on the same play was on the Giants after telling myself don't worry there's a flag and it would have come back anyway.
you are correct sir..but I didnt have a siezure, my right arm just kept making tiny circles for 4 hours
For every positive word that you all gush out of your mouths, the football gods will smite one child.
I'm going to continue to assume this team sucks until I'm drunkenly watching them parade down Broad Street.

You suck at this. You didn't one-up anybody with a story about tearing the skin off your face in agony watching that play or anything. Damn.
Sorry. I had a stroke a few years ago and sometimes lose track of what's going on. Ask SunMo about it.

The greatest player to ever play is Lawrence Taylor. I hate to say i(he was a Giant afterall) but he was beyond human. Talk up the coke all you want but who knows what anyone else ever did.

I liked how his article right before the game was how the eagles had no shot.
Then his article right after the game was how the giants had no shot because of plax.
Even if Plax was there, Eli couldt throw him the ball
