to be fair, the phillies never had a shot at him...and they forfeited their 1st round pick that year to sign raul ibanez's corpse

but they seem to get the crappy local products and miss the big ones. that reggie jackson fellow from CHELTENHAM is another one. but hey, mike costanzo!

hate to break the news to you but the major league gm doesnt have an enormous amount to do with scouting

hes basically is the CEO....hires the boots on the ground....but roob isnt going to bumblefarg, virginia to see scooter mcgee pitch. he's just reading the report, viewing some video and begrudgingly trusting what he's told. and i think you know the phillies organization well enough that monty never fires anybody and marty wolever failed up the food chain.

in short...this. its amazing how long they've gone without producing a good ML player. and that includes the gillick years and players traded away by amaro. all of them suck.

we've been over this before...gillick gets wayyyy too much credit. he took over a stacked team with a core in place and simply tinkered. of course those tinkers were all mostly right, but the revisionist history on gillick is out of control. wade and arbuckle did the leg work....they couldnt finish the job. look at the 1st round picks under gillick. they suck.

billy beane is not my hero. he's not even a super nerd. he just uses things that aren't popular--therefore cheap--to his advantage because his resources are limited. hence the term, moneyball. for a time that was nerd stuff. then everyone started using nerd stuff, so he started going a bit against it.
