long live bowl games!
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Score another victory for the BCS

brilliant piece and it all sounds so familiar....

Quote
However, those who implemented the BCS couldn't have anticipated its effect on college football's already extraordinary regular season. In the past, fans in the South or Midwest didn't particularly care whether Oregon beat Oregon State, and fans in the Midwest or West didn't much care whether Auburn beat Alabama. Under the BCS, that has changed profoundly, as fans of teams in one region are now glued to games in other regions. As Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times writes, the BCS has "transformed the sport from a Saturday afternoon cookout to a national obsession."

What other sports' regular season could justly be characterized as a "national obsession"? The NFL regular season is widely watched, to be sure, but with the same intensity? Good NFL teams' starters often don't even play in their final game or two. And is anyone obsessed with the four months of quasi-exhibition games that predate college basketball's season-ending tournament?

Let's quickly recap this splendid college football season. Oregon overcame a 21-3 deficit to beat Stanford in a game that - as was clear by season's end - decided which of those teams would play for the national championship. At Alabama, Auburn rallied from a 24-0 deficit to win 28-27 and eventually join the Ducks in the title game. And Nevada rebounded from a 24-7 deficit to upset Boise State in overtime, knocking the Broncos from the ranks of the unbeaten and ending their Cinderella run. If college football had a playoff, these dramatic games would merely have tweaked teams' playoff seedings.

Undefeated TCU became the first team from a non-major conference to play in the Rose Bowl since, well, ever - beating the Big Ten's bruising Wisconsin Badgers, 21-19, to claim a title that the Horned Frogs' players will carry with them for the rest of their lives: "Rose Bowl champions." The game marked the seventh time in seven years that a team from a lesser-known conference has played in one of the major bowls (now called "BCS bowls.") To put that into perspective, prior to the BCS no such team had played in such a bowl since Air Force played in the 1971 Sugar Bowl.

In impressive performances, Alabama dominated Big Ten co-champion Michigan State, 49-7, in the Capital One Bowl, and Stanford dominated Atlantic Coast Conference champion Virginia Tech, 40-12, in the Orange Bowl. Then, in the BCS National Championship Game, undefeated Auburn (which had beaten Alabama) beat previously undefeated Oregon (which had beaten Stanford), 22-19, on a field goal on the season's final play.

With the best regular season in all of sports, a championship game that's more - not less - likely to feature the two best teams, and a full slate of colorful bowl games attended by participating teams' real fans (who have enough advanced notice to plan such trips over the holidays), college football is nearly perfect. The sport may confound the casual fan, but those who love it increasingly recognize the truth of this claim: This is college football's golden age.

yes lets point to 3 games played between the 2 best teams in their respective conferences as justification for this joke and insult of a system

then lets pander and pat the little kids in tcu on the head and say he guys you got to go to the rose bowl! good for you! its not a national title but its a game against a crappy big 10 team from wisconsin! fun!

then take us through a pack of horrible bowl games where tops 1 or 2 were noteworthy.

you do realize these games could simply be replicated during a 6 or 8 team playoff while still having nearly the same meaning during the regular season. i dont know. stubborn white people do as they do, dont they, michael.

False.

MDS

yea instead of needing 0 losses to play for the title you can slip up once and still get in

massive change

go through past years top 10s...more often than they are entirely 0 and 1 loss teams. meaning those are the squads that would generally get into the tourney. meaning the regular season is still important and not watered down ala college hoops.

in fact take a look at cubans post on how horrendous non conference regular season is....its staggeringly bad and everyone ignores this in their defense of the bcs and regular season. none of these teams challenge themselves outside of their own conferences and really only the sec has a leg to stand on in that mindset. the pac 10 blows outside of 2-3 teams, the big 10 is a farce except for ohio st, etc.

wow is cuban a moron....lets compare college football to boxing...makes perfect sense

also cfb generally breaks down like this

12 games
9 conf
3 ooc

so if you take the bcs teams who all for the most part have tough conference schedules (big east is the exception) that leaves three games which to work with

heres a breakdown of the top 20 aq schools ooc skeds against other aq's

auburn - clemson
oregon - tennessee
ohio state - miami
oklahoma - fla state (air force)
lsu - north carolina, west virginia
bama - penn state
arkansas - tex am
okie state - tex am
mich state - notre dame
miss state - none
vt - none ( boise state)
fla state - oklahoma, florida
mississippi - illinois
tex am - okie state, arkansas
nebraska - wash

so they all schedule at least one other bcs opponent..some schedle two...which means btwn 33 and 66% of their ooc opponents are quality bcs teams...absolutely nothing wrong with that and probably a higher % than cbb where you can lose ten times and win the national championship

stop comparing hoops to football

its two separate entities

this is just an endless debate that is going nowhere but for the love of god please dont consider the big 10 or acc or even mostly the pac 10 a tough conference with tough schedules

they absolutely are...just because they arent as good as the sec doesnt mean going undefeated thru one of their schedules isnt tough

sec = late 80's/early 90's nfc east
rest of bcs conf. = nfc east now
big east = 2010 nfc west

no it doesnt

you can still make your money even if there is a 6 or 8 team playoff because there will always be bowls. they cant.

I don't understand why you can't muster more appreciation for the BCS. It's way better than the previous bowl system.
