As Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson figuratively limps through what could be his final NFL season, he could be literally limping, too.

Tomlinson, hobbled earlier this year with a sprained ankle, missed practice Wednesday with a hip injury.

The development comes as a time when coach Norv Turner is expressing a desire to pump up the running attack, which has languished in 2009.

Currently, the Chargers are last in the league, averaging only 69.6 rushing yards per game.

"We need more carries," Turner said Wednesday.  "To continue to get better as a total team, no question we need more."

Five other Chargers missed practice on Wednesday, including tight end Antonio Gates (foot), defensive lineman Travis Johnson (groin), defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo (ankle), linebacker Shaun Phillips (ankle), and linebacker Jyles Tucker (ankle).

Center Nick Hardwick, who sprained his ankle way back in Week One, participated on a limited basis.  He has been practicing at times over the past few weeks, but Hardwick has yet to return to practice.

Linebackers Shawne Merriman fully participated on Wednesday, despite a foot injury.

looks like the battle of the gimps and the makings for an ugly game.   o/u total run plays = 7

i bet a good chunk of change well see the highly anticipated return of the McNabb, that sweet hunk of man meat,
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Gocong as the MIKE? Andy is slick.

General_Failure

This game is going to be so bad that it'll count as two losses.

The man. The myth. The legend.

Your McNabb hate is as ridiculous as monk's Rollins hate.

if it works whatever, he has the make-up for it...but I wouldnt say im thrilled about it.

Im pretty sure Gocong has more speed then both Witherspoon and Fokou at this point, and they will need his speed inside/outside the hashes--especially against a squad that passes their ass off.

dont know if anyone saw this but M. Mayock and Belick break down the eagles/dallas game and some of the problems.

its crazy all the shuffling thats going on with that front. Im sure ron rivera is going to throw a lot of blitz packages at mcnabb to throw him and the line off being how bad he is against the blitz this year, but I still think they win this game though... not because they are more talented than SD, but I like them more as an underdog

lol at that LB corps.

That's a friggen joke. The linebackers look like the wr's used too. Not one who would start on a playoff team.

OK, you all know i'm the last to defend this FO. But they have a shteinload of injuries this year and right now. THey lost their starting MLB, another starting LB and 2 CBs. What teams have enough depth in those positions to have "those who would start on a playoff team" waiting on the bottom of their roster?

Comments like these are farging ridiculous. They went out and got Witherspoon which is looking like the pickup of the year so far. They can't pull that shtein off every week when there is another injury or suspension.

WTF else are they supposed to do?

Again, I hate this FO. You all know that. Reid, banner, lurie...all of them. But this kind of shtein is ridiculous to get on them about.

Having Gocong as a linebacker starter is what's a joke.  They lucked into Witherspoon too.  And while it's impossible to have All-Pro backups coming off the bench it would be nice if they had at least remotely competent players but that's just not how they roll.
