Imagine how high they would have been on FS1.

i dont understand? fox is going to draw higher numbers than fs1....sure!

again, mlb did not have a contract offer to put the lcs on a broadcast network. the ratings dont justify it. fox actually had the option to place the games on big fox or fs1, they elected to put them all on fs1 because they care more about establishing that network than they do about short-term ratings gains.

the point? mlb doesnt have the product to warrant forcing their way to broadcast networks. thats why theyre on cable -- a cable network in 3 million fewer homes than espn. the nba doesnt either. its just the almighty nfl.

and again, this is only an issue for you because you were mildly inconvenienced last week so therefore its the worst thing ever
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

http://www.outkickthecoverage.com/espn-loses-621-000-subscribers-worst-month-in-company-history-102916

QuoteThe biggest business story in American sports this fall isn't the declining NFL ratings or anything that's happening on the field, court, or ice, it's the collapse in ESPN subscribers, which reflect a larger trend in the collapse of cable subscribers in general.

Yesterday Nielsen announced its subscriber numbers for November 2016 and those numbers were the worst in the history of ESPN's existence as a cable company -- the worldwide leader in sports lost 621,000 cable subscribers. That's the most subscribers ESPN has ever lost in a month according to Nielsen estimates and it represents a terrifying and troubling trend for the company, an acceleration of subscriber loss that represents a doubling of the average losses over the past couple of years, when ESPN has been losing in the neighborhood of 300,000 subscribers a month.

These 621,000 lost subscribers in the past month alone lead to a drop in revenue of over $52 million and continue the alarming subscriber decline at ESPN. Couple these subscriber declines with a 24% drop in Monday Night Football ratings this fall, the crown jewel of ESPN programming, and it's fair to call October of 2016 the worst month in ESPN's history.

Long article with a lot to say, including this:

QuoteIt seems pretty clear that within five years ESPN will be bringing in less subscriber revenue than they've committed for sports rights.

MDS

cable isnt going away but its going to be very interesting to see where sports rights go. i dont seem them leaving tv but all these contracts are going to have to include an non-log in required streaming element.

like itll be on espn, the espn app and streaming on youtube -- possibly for money, possibly free

The trouble is, ESPN can't have most people watching the games somewhere other than cable and expect cable companies -- who are the ones really losing these subscribers -- to keep paying the big ESPN fee. Super curious how it turns out.

MDS

espn will survive but they will not be able to pay as much for rights....their sub numbers will mirror fs1 and nbcsn which will more than likely spread out the rights among those networks.

the sports leagues, im guessing, are going to want to attract cord cutters so they will move games or a separate package to streaming to get them. could be a take it or leave it deal for espn....like either you allow streaming on google or we take the games to fs1 who wont care

Did I hear right on the radio that the World Series beat SNF by 32% last night?

Don Ho

wow!  I could see a possible WS clinching game involving two teams that have not won it in forever beating out SNF but with Dallas playing and outdrawing it by 32%, that is shocking.
