I want to think that not everyone on here is how I imagine them...fat and lazy...and an alcoholic.

That said, anyone know anything about rowing?

It seems challenging and I want to try a new sport. I was thinking of rock climbing...I've done that once and it was awesome...but my kayak experience in Puerto Rico has got me thinking of rowing. It's good excercise and my understanding is that people race it competitively.

Got suggestions?

you could make money rowing your family members from one shore to the next, thats competition and money.

I know its big on the east coast, especially rivers, and knew a few people who rowed in college for NCAA, its very expensive

I kayaked around Mission Bay when I lived in San Diego. That was fun because it was easy and you could drink while you were doing it.

I rowed sculls competitively in high school. It's a pretty amazing full-body workout; when you're going all out it's not uncommon to puke soon after getting out of the water. It's not a sport for the easily bored, either. Unless you're totally brain dead you need to find a way to occupy your brain while your body is being punished.

There are a lot of different types of rowing and the equipment is expensive as hell, so try before you buy.

Just kayaked Pine Creek near PA Grand Canyon. It was awesome, plus you bring alittle cooler and can slug back some brews. I hike quite often and ride 4 wheelers, which is more of a workout than you would think. Getting my mtn bike tuned up also, looking forward to some riding this summer/fall...

Kayaking is fun and I wish I could do it more. What makes you want to take up rowing over that? Rowing is nice, too...but if you liked kayaking, why not stick with that. Cheaper and less of a hassle, I'd thing. I don't have any experience with competitive rowing, though.

As far as my activities go, other than Aikido, which is more teaching than not these days, and running, I've been really liking getting some serious bike rides in. When the whether is right, bike riding is pretty awesome. Just bought a co-pilot trailer so that the kid can ride with me on longer treks. When I can't do that, I run.

I'm looking for an ocean kayak, there's a sandbar pretty far out from the shore, and if you can get out to it, people are bringing in 4ft plus sharks.  Plus riding waves in is some fun shtein.

I think kayaks are really cool...but when it comes to ocean kayaks, I'm just chicken shtein scared of sharks. When it comes to river kayaks...I just think I'm a sitting duck for a bear. I know, stupid. I just figure rowing is a little safer in that regard and I can do it competitively.

I am going whitewater rafting for the first time in about 2 weeks.  I am not usually a big fan of water but I am looking forward to this.

Over the past month my brother and I started taking Krav Maga.  I did it mainly for fun, though it is an awesome workout.   I like it more than other disciplines I dabbled in the past because it is all about destroying people.

Come kayaking down in Florida.  You won't have to worry about bear.
