i will still tip terrible service 20%...maybe he or she had a bad day...maybe it was the kitchens fault...or maybe shtein happens sometimes

if a place continually delivers bad service i just stop going...but a one time bad visit im giving the benefit of the doubt to the server

I also go with the permanent 20%. It's easy to calculate and keeps the servers from thinking I'm a cheap icehole. No one ever gets a 5% tip and thinks "I treated those people so badly, I deserved this." They just think you are a cheap icehole. If you have a real problem, see the manager, use a comment card, call a hotline or just go to a nicer establishment next time. If it's about the money for you, maybe you are a cheap icehole.

I hate tipping culture, especially in non-restaurant situations. It's often socially awkward, sometimes you end up in situations where it's unclear if/how much you should tip, you gotta have the right change on you.... basically it sucks. It feels like a system that evolved out of dirty old men slipping $20s into waitresses' pockets and winking at them. I prefer the system overseas where tipping isn't really a thing. Although I admit that in those countries you more often get service workers who are ruder, slower, and basically care less about doing a good job.

I think being slower is a cultural thing too. They're ruder because you're an American. I don't think they care less about doing a good job though.

There might be some of that going on in Europe and Latin America, although a lot of times they are nicer to Americans than to other Euros because they know our dumb asses tip more than their customary 5%, 10% or whatever.

The countries where there is no tipping at all are the Asian countries where they usually like white people's money and aren't known for being slow or lazy.

If you read any travel forums there are always a ton of tipping threads from foreigners who don't get the tipping culture here.

I tried to tip in Peru just thinking that was how it is ...and was told it was not necessary. I still did it because I didn't feel right NOT doing it.

If the service sucks I will tip less but I will let it be known that I am doing so because the service sucked and the server was an icehole. So if they were to think I was a cheapskate then I wouldn't give a shtein because they are an icehole anyway. But I will say this...I have only do this probably twice in my life. Usually I receive at least adequate service and many times it is pretty good. And a normal tip for me is 20-25pct. I also overtip when gambling at the tables. I once filled up an entire craps tables tip box with singles because of the bets I was making for the dealers.

Tipping is bullshtein, you're essentially adding 20% to the cost of your meal because owners are greedy fargs who don't want to pay their workers. Mom and pop stores I understand but I don't know how giant chain restaurants get away with it.

I tip anywhere from 20-25% because I know the poor person waiting on me is probably only getting $3 an hour from the establishment. Plus waiting is a good way to earn a living if you don't have a degree.

the difference btwn a 20% tip and a 10% tip on an average dinner for two is most times gonna be less than five bucks....if that makes a difference to you then you probably shouldn't be eating out to begin with

I actually agree with this but I was referring to an isolated incident or two where the service was beyond terrible.  I was a bartender and I know cheap fargs when I see them.  I'm far from one, trust me on that.

Also - I have taken it upon myself to speak to the owners of restaurants before if the food or service is horrendous.  I mean, they have to know these things, otherwise they're never going to change or improve.  The converse is true as well.  I had one of the best goddamn Thai meals I've ever tasted yesterday.  It was damn near perfect and I mentioned that to the server and the manager as well.  I mean, it's hard to farg up cashew chicken, but still... great service and excellent food should be noted, especially in a shteinhole like this "city" where good restaurants are as rare as hens teeth.

Both my wife and I worked in restaurants and we've always been the type to tip well.  The only time i've left a tip like that was the last time I stepped a foot into TGIFridays around 2002.  It's one thing for a waiter or waitress to be dealing with a bad cook or kitchen, its a whole other thing where you combine that with a bitchy attitude and ignoring customers.

The worst tippers are typically the worst drivers.  FACT

100% true.  I'm Mr Pink in Reservoir Dogs.

One time in a job interview they asked me what my biggest flaw was and I said that I tip too much.

Diomedes

What a terrible question.

I answered that by saying that my worst flaw is that I don't answer trap questions or play stupid games like that.

You forgot fatties, smokers, and vegans.

I do have a deep seeded and borderline embarrassing bias against all fat people. Truth.

Smokers and vegans I've got nothing against. I smoked for years. Probably still would if not for extenuating circumstances. Vegans are just misguided hippy douches and they're usually more tolerable than misguided conservative douches so I'll count that as a win. Plus, more meat for me.

Well said sir.

Diomedes

Vegans won't eat eggs because they consider them to be the product of slave labor.

I have a hard time respecting that kind of position.  Chicken slaves, holy christ that's cute.
