QuoteBooker looks to ex-teammate for return tips

By GEOFF MOSHER
The News Journal

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Jets kick returner Leon Washington, a Pro Bowler, should expect a call from his former teammate soon.

Lorenzo Booker, who played with Washington at Florida State, is hoping to catch some good advice from Washington before Booker returns his first kickoff Friday against Pittsburgh in the team's first preseason game.

"The guy is as good at kick returns as anybody to me," Booker said Sunday after practice at Lehigh, "so, from that standpoint, I can't think of anyone better."

Washington averaged 27.5 yards per return and scored three touchdowns last season. Booker has never returned a kick in the NFL.

Still, special teams coordinator Rory Segrest said Friday that Booker is auditioning as the unit's top return man, with rookie wideout DeSean Jackson and rookie safety Quintin Demps also taking reps, as well as safety J.R. Reed and running back Correll Buckhalter.

"He's a guy that has great speed -- great speed and great vision," Segrest said. "One thing we were questioning there was whether or not he'd be able to break tackles, and he's shown out here during live practice sessions that he is capable of breaking tackles.

"It's obviously a little bit different on the kick return aspect of it. You've got guys flying around coming downhill at him, but we feel like he could definitely get the job done there."

Jackson is the top candidate to return punts, and Segrest hopes Jackson's reputation as a burner forces the opponent to game plan against him.

"With DeSean, we have the ability to stretch the field a little bit, hopefully get teams to overplay and hopefully get some seams there," he said.

Wounded birds

Running back Brian Westbrook shook off flu-like symptoms and strep throat to partake in some team drills during the morning, but he left when the team went to live practice.

Cornerback Lito Sheppard left the morning practice before live action with a groin tweak. Safety Sean Considine remained sidelined with an oblique strain, as did defensive tackle Kimo von Oelhoffen with a knee injury.

Matt Schobel left the morning session with a foot injury, and cornerback Asante Samuel is still out with a hamstring injury.

Wing tips

Kudos to rookie linebacker Andy Studebaker for standing up Correll Buckhalter at the goal line. ... Stewart Bradley leveled Lorenzo Booker after a 3-yard gain. ... Rookie free-agent linebacker Justin Roland's tight coverage on L.J. Smith in the end zone forced Donovan McNabb to thrown an incomplete pass. ... Omar Gaither and Juqua Parker teamed on a Kevin Kolb "sack." ... Rookie Quintin Demps broke up a McNabb pass to Smith in the end zone. ... Jerome McDougle "sacked" Kolb on second-and-2. ... McNabb connected with Jason Avant in the back corner of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown on third-and-2.

yea I know.....earth-shattering stuff.  Just thought it was odd that Jackson is #6 right now.  He's better than Lewis.  And rusty's favorite backup guard is 3rd-string right now....

he doesnt know the offense and we all know thats more important than talent to andy

if anything is to be taken seriously from that list and i doubt much can be i would say the thing that jumps out most for me is king dunlap being #2 at LT...i mean if tra thomas gets hurt king dunlap a guy who couldnt even start in college last year would be protecting the blind side of an nfl quarterback...pretty amazing if you think about it

dont worry bout the king, hes got things handled.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Yeti

Caught 2:00 practice, Special Teams.  Pretty good.  Deshawn has sure hands catching the ball, nice fluid moves too.  Saw G Lew get clothlined by Jamal Jones during a blocking drill.  I laughed.

I was thinking the same exact thing when I read that.  Scary, I know.
The drawback to marital longevity is your wife always knows when you're really interested in her and when you're just trying to bury it.

I don't think too much about King being #2...

If that happened in a game where Tra went down, I would like to think that Herremans would slide out there with MJG going to LG. This is assuming that Andrews is back in at RG.

Or they could throw the swinging gate Justice out there. Whom I read was beaten by McDougle like a drum in practice yesterday.
