The Sixers bought a couple of esports teams.  I stumbled across a TV broadcast of one of these loserfests one day like a month or so ago....teams playing each other in some shoot-em-up game like halo or something.  None of it made sense, especially them playing in front of an audience. These people aren't actually fans, are they?  They're just people plucked off the streets who were paid 50 bucks to look interested, right?

It's real, sadly.

Welcome to the millennial/gamer world. I didn't think it was real either but it is

Warriors' Guber, Wizards' Leonsis, and Magic Johnson buy Team Liquid

QuoteTeam Liquid has announced that it has sold the controlling interest of its esports organization to an ownership group led by Peter Guber and Ted Leonsis. Guber is the co-owner of the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, the Los Angeles Dodgers of MLB, and Los Angeles Football Club soccer team. Leonsis runs Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Washington Capitals NHL team, the Washington Wizards basketball team, the Washington Mystics women's basketball team, and the Washington Valor arena football team. Now, they're investing in an esports industry worth $493 million and growing. Intelligence firm Newzoo projects that esports will drive $1.1 billion in revenues by 2019, which makes the market ripe for investing.

No, watching people play video games competetively is a half billion dollar industry. Watching people play video games is a multi billion dollar industry.

My kids love to watch YouTube channels of gamers.  Supposed "adults" whose balls apparently never dropped proclaiming their superiority in the game du jour.  I don't know where I went wrong as a father...

PhillyPhreak54

lol

I don't have a game system anymore and never had one where you could talk to people while playing but I don't think I could take some little shtein whose balls haven't dropped talking shtein to me

Munson

Yeah I don't know how pewdiepie became a thing, but it did, and little kids farging love him.

I still game so it's funny to hear the little 9 year olds on Call of Duty trying to be pewdiepie while they play.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Munson

He is the most subscribed to person on youtube, something like 50 million+, and his youtube channel is the most viewed of all time, even more than all the biggest music stars you can think of.

He's started making just regular 'comedy' videos at this point based on video games, but for the most part he 'rose to fame' by playing video games and adding his own live commentary.

South park made an entire episode (two episodes?) dedicated to little kids not even wanting to play video games because they'd rather watch other people like pewdiepie play them.
