Cornerback Rashad Barksdale is raw and he needs work, but I saw a play on Sunday that demonstrated why the Eagles like him: Barksdale ran with Hank Baskett down the field on a post route and leaped up and broke up a pass against the leaping Baskett. Very nice.

Barksdale projects to probably be the best 6th round pick the Eagles had during Andy Reid's tenure. He has all the tangibles in terms of athleticism and in that video interview he seems to have great confidence and demeanor considering he's only been playing football for a year. He should be a fun player to watch and root for.

Well, I did say "projects" meaning he has very good value for a 6th round pick as evidenced by the characteristics that are tangible -- like how fast he can run the 40, his size, his seeming ability to pick up on the nuances of football relatively quickly, etc.

He could bust. That is definitely a possibility. A lot of great athletes just don't perform well in the NFL. But, considering he was drafted in the 6th round, he is at a "need" position, and considering all the other players that were available at that pick, this was a very good pick-up for the Eagles in terms of value.

I don't expect much from him his first season. If he is a solid special teams performer on kick-offs and maybe a gunner on punts then I think that would be a very productive year giving his current experience playing football. If he actually gets on the field for a considerable amount of time in Nickel/Dime situations, and performs well, then that would be icing on the cake for me.

To celebrate his newfound riches, Barksdale is not going to fritter away his money on trivial items. Instead, he's going to pay off his student loans. That's something you rarely hear of.

"I'm going to get that over with so it doesn't hurt my credit," said Barksdale after rookie camp practice Wednesday. "I'm going to get that out of the way. It's been four years of student loans and now that I am very fortunate to have the money to just pay it off instead of other college guys, who come out of school and they have so much stress just thinking about paying it off."

Seriously, these sentiments have me scrambling for the bandwagon.
