Perhaps those parents should then take a look at what books their young children are bringing home from the library.

Maybe they did and contacted their counsel person ;)

So because one parent doesn't want a child to read a book, no one should be able to read a book? This is the same bad logic that causes so much sensationalism over violent video games.

I don't want my child reading religious texts. I know they have those in a library, and I refuse to let them tell my children how to behave or what to think. Burn them.

I obviosly don't know the exact circumstances of the Library firing.  Everything I've read suggests most American parents (parents that are actually active in raising their children) probably prefer not to have their young children exposed to sexual or homosexual maters while young (in school or in the library) as they would prefer to have this discussion themselves.  I would imagine that in Alaska it would be a very small % of parents supporting the books explaining the gay "life stlye" to young people as the Alaskan values being somewhat different from that of New Hope.

That Heineken is MINE!

Everything I've read suggests that parents want someone else to prevent their children from being exposed to things they don't like, instead of taking an active role in the prevention. I understand that parents can't be everywhere with their children all the time, but censorship shouldn't be thrown around so liberally just to make someone's life easier.

*facepalm*  If you think banning books is OK, we aren't going to have a meaningful conversation.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

I am not for banning books but having age appropriate sections may be nice middle ground.

My daughter was recently exposed to a horror movie called "Black Christmas". It's a bad one for an 8 year old to sit through. Older girl next door showed it to the neighborhood kids. We were a little miffed but we talk to our kids and I would never run out and say that we should ban all horror movies because a kid could see it by chance at the hands of an irresponsible teen. For that matter I wouldn't say that the library should exlude it from the list of movies they carry for us to copy. Just make sure kids can't check it out on their own.

Besides I remember hiding in the basement from my parents with Luke Sky Walker playing in my walkman and I turned out OK right? ...RIGHT!

Me and my homeys like to play this game, some call it amtrak some call it the train....

That's a nice middle gound. It might have even been aimed at young children and progressive parents such as myself wouldn't mind reading that to my kids and explaining things. Though parents should have the option sure. Everytime I've been in a library with my kids they're always supervised so I don't get why it sitting on the shelf is a bad thing no matter the section. Book probably just mentions that little Jimmy has two Dads or something.

Rome

Libraries already have children's sections.  And banning books is incredibly retarded.

Its where lonely guys go to pick up chicks, letting them know that all the good books are on the bottom shelf.

Actually, Black Christmas is bad for anyone to sit through, and probably should be banned.
