I disagree, but for the sake of argument let's say you're right.  Even so, I take this (hypothetical) truth as proof that liberal thought is more highly evolved, more civilized, more human.  It's kinda like when the anciet greeks figured out that it's best not to allow the injured party to sit on the jury...you may want your mother's killer to perish, but if you're civlized, you understand that it's better for you in the long run if other people decide the point....

Quote from: FastFreddie on January 30, 2008, 01:39:34 PMI've said it before and will say it again - the best part about the Clinton Presidency was that he barely accomplished anything of significance.  This is why die-hard Liberals that want big government and entitlements through the roof call him a Republican.
I call him a Republican because of NAFTA and his support for the death penalty, among other things.  He was a moderate cast as a liberal in the hyper-conservative stage of this dying empire, to put it simply.

I'd just like to issue a correction that Senator Clay Davis is a State Senator, and plenty of those guys are not old and white.

Stringer doesn't think so highly of him..just sayin'.

I'm telling you fools, Barack Obama is going to be the next president of the United States.  I think he's going to trounce Hillary on Feb. 5th and then make McCain look like what he is...a day late and a dollar short.

You can make the argument that social liberalism is more 'evolved' but all other forms of liberalism are just ways of thinking about things. Your Greek jury analogy is interesting but doesn't have anything to do with your argument. Allowing a grieved party to sit on a jury is simply a bad idea with a predictably unfair result.  The same cannot be said for 'conservative' or 'liberal' thoughts as a blanket rule.

Anyway, I hope you're right about Obama. As I've said before, he may be the most liberal candidate in the field, but he could tell me that he was going to nuke the moon and dissolve the government and he'd still probably get my vote. This country needs a shock to the system or it's likely to die a painful death brought about by it's own stupidity. I'm rooting for the former.

The same can most certainly be said for a (privately) admitted racist to see the wisdom in keeping that prejudice out of policy, which was my point with the analogy.

The part about liberalism being more evolved is simple fact.  Everything good we enjoy came from liberalism.

Whatever, I know where this conversation is headed and it's all semantics. Suffice to say I refuse to accept a blanket statement that 'liberalism is more evolved' as fact, let alone 'everything good we enjoy came from liberalism.'

I'm obviously a pretty liberal guy but if you can't see both sides of the argument you're no better than the lunatics on the opposing side, whatever side that may be.

Conservatism is the mindset of the status quo, of those who revere authority, who seek to preserve tradition for the sake of tradition.  It is a stubborn, close minded ideology which exists solely to resist change, advancement, experimentation.

Liberalism is king all.

I've got Aristotle, Bacon, Spinoza, Jefferson, Lincoln and King on my side, to name a few.  Conservatism has George W. Bush and his ilk.

He was admittedly pro-rape-the-Earth, so I guess I might consider leaving him out...but he was such a champ for Reason...I'm conflicted.

Conservatism has been hijacked by what you describe above but that is not what it truly represents or should represent. Niether side in its pure form is good for you.

Read the Wiki entries for Conservatism and Liberalism and you'll see what I'm talking about.  (hint: Democrats and Republicans have nothing to do with my point)

Considering how farged up this country is in terms of race relations, treatment of women and minorities, bigotry & religious zealotry, I can't believe anyone with half a brain would actively refer to themselves as a social conservative.

Things most definitely aren't alright in this country so siding with those who want to keep things as they are is really ridiculous in my opinion.

In other words how can't you be a social liberal?  I can certainly see being fiscally conservative but socially conservative?  No.

rjs246

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how incapable people are of seeing both sides, but here I am, shocked at the stereotypes being tossed around as though they are fact...

McCain is going to get the Governator's endorsement today.  Romney's campaign is really flapping in the wind.

The only true social conservative left is Huckabee, and he's laughable, so at least the next President won't waste time talking about overturning Roe v. Wade or whatnot.

rjs246

Oh yeah, watch McCain. He's been spouting off about abortion a lot more lately... farging douche.
