The front page of the NYT tomorrow is graphic. Russian has opened fire on fleeing civilians and it shows a family of four laying dead in the street; two kids, mom and dad.

I'm not one for censorship when it comes to things like this. Show the world what is really happening. Especially now in a time when misinformation is a click away.

You don't really have to read this piece to know what it says, and you can find them elsewhere to much the same effect.

And all of them are missing the point.

Yes, Ukraine needs a No Fly Zone.  I think everyone but Russia and its allies (China?) agrees. 

Yes, the West has imposed this action before.

What's not being mentioned in any of the very impassioned pleas for a No Fly Zone:

It is a direct act of war, requiring Western forces (NATO, US, etc.) to actively, directly, shoot down Russian planes.   But that's just the end of it...before you can even do that, you have to make the air space safe(ish) for the "good guys," which means, eliminating every possible anti-aircraft installation that covers the space you're going to restrict.  In this case--different from Iraq and Syria and other places where a no fly has been established--that means bombing many many facilities within Russian borders, as they've got almost the entirety of Ukraine airspace covered. 

So when you see someone saying we should set one up, ask them if they think it's a good idea to bomb Russia and then shoot down their planes.  And remind them that Russia has about 4,500 nukes at the ready. 


Completely different scenarios than we've faced before.  A no-fly zone would very likely be the start of a world war, and China might side with Russia. 

It's awful what Russia is doing and we have a real problem on our hands, but a No Fly Zone would make matters worse.
