Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Someone help me understand this

Biden says Saturday "for gods sake this man cannot remain in power"

And people are screeching for him to walk it back? And he has to come out and clarify he's not calling for regime change?

Why is that a big deal? Anyone with a couple brain cells should know a regime change is EXACTLY what's needed in Russia because that guy is murdering women and children and innocent civilians.

So what am I missing here? He gotta go. But we can't say that?

I think it is because from Putin's pov, there is nothing more threatening than regime chance because it is a personally existential threat to him. Same with all of these despots. Going down that dictator rabbit hole and now likely guilty of war crimes, regime change is not an option for him. It means humiliating death or worse, prison.

He is already unreasonably paranoid. If he thinks someone in his circle wants to off him, or he could be convicted, not to even mention the humiliation of losing the next election he has so carefully rigged - his thought is if he's gonna go down, no reason not to take the rest of the world with him, there's nothing to loose. There was a chilling comment about winning back the old USSR, something like "if there is no world with (old) Russia, what is the point of having a world?" That's why there are back peddling from regime change, they don't want to help provoke nuke ww3.

Eagleholic has the right of it.  One consideration that is important:  even if the policy is not to bring about Putin's demise, and even if he and the Russians know that, it's important to limit as much as possible any comment or action that he could cast as an excuse for escalation.  He's already got his country hook line and sinker on the concept that the West wants to destroy Russia (when in fact, we have no interest at all in that), so Biden is not helping matters by giving audio clips in line with that propaganda.

There is also this:   Regime change is, as a matter of fact, just not the U.S. policy or goal in Russia.  Biden spoke too loosely, and the speech of the President matters, so unless he was announcing a change in U.S. policy, it's important for many players, domestic and foreign, that his statement be clarified.

I think he and the White House did a fine job of that in this case.  State Department made it clear that the President was speaking off the cuff (as everyone knows he is prone to do at times, especially regarding emotional matters.)  Then the President addressed the matter directly, both making it clear that actual regime change is NOT the U.S. policy and also that he would not take back the spirit of his comments, because Putin is a butcher of women and children.
