The larger house thing confuses me as well.  I would rather have a smaller house with the absolute best in luxury features rather than a warehouse with the same sort of amenities.  My house now is around 2,700 sq.ft. with a 2CG and it's more than big enough for the three of us.  Personally, I'd prefer something smaller but the house I live in was the deal of the century at the time so I couldn't pass it up.

The huge SUV thing for the soccer moms is absurd and more than a little disgusting, though.  There's a girl who drives a full size Hummer at my kid's school and the furthest she goes off-road in that thing is when she pulls into a beachside parking lot.  It gets about 10 miles to the gallon, but she doesn't care because it looks cool and it's red and shiny!

One of my neighbors just bought a brand new Suburban. He was bragging that it switches to a 4 cylinder on the highway. I asked him what his MPG was when it does that and he said 16mpg. That's just totally irresponsible! What's that beast get normally 8mpg?

I like to think my wife and I split the difference on the house thing. We have a house now that is too big for just two people. However we were able to afford it, and thought we'd jump into a bigger house rather than go the starter house route.

The environmental side of the deal was we paid to have dual climate zones installed (splitting the bedrooms and the common living areas), along with an additional (smaller) water heater for the appliances only.

All in all we use about 75% of gas and electricity that the previous owners used, which has saved us a TON of money since the initial improvements.

I drink enough to kill a donkey and then recycle the empties. I'm saving the planet.

You recycle them yourself, or do you just put them in a receptacle that you assume will be properly recycled?

Assuming the former, you must have an impressive set of teeth in your bergina.

I make the empties into low-income housing and donate the rent I collect to the NRA.

The notion that we invaded Iraq because they had WMD's is ridiculous because they had them for many years beforehand.  After all, we supplied them.  The thought that we invaded to depose a dangerous dictator for humanitarian reasons is also ridiculous because we looked the other way for years because Saddam was an ally in our cold war against Iran.

The Iraq War was a business decision, pure and simple.  They have oil and we needs lots of it.  All three Bush administrations have been bought and paid for by the petroleum industry, and they've gotten disgustingly wealthy as payment for their financing of three elections.

HA! Your 100% right. I remember when the war started, and I said it was about oil, someone here called me an idiot. Oh well.

Another record high

QuoteDemand for gasoline has been falling for months as consumers reacted to a series of price records by driving less. The national average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas rose 1.3 cents Wednesday to a record $3.399 a gallon, according to a survey of stations by AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. That's 53 cents higher than a year ago, and is expected to keep climbing along with futures prices and as the summer driving season draws near.

53 cents higher than a year ago, and right around $1.65 higher than when Bush was first elected. Thats double folks.

article from 2000

I don't think it a coincidence that gas prices have continuously set record highs while he has been in office. Oil baron Bush is in the back pocket of all the oil companies.
