Today's price in Peterborough: $1.14/l = $4.27/gallon
in a country that has an oil surplus.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

My finance professor told our class they did a study on how much a gallon would have to cost before Americans changed their driving habits. That price is $4.82

And how exactly would Americans change their driving habits pray tell?

That's about the same price I've been talking about with friends and family for about ten years now. I think that would only be the beginning - The point where a significant amount of people will only begin to consider "Maybe I shouldn't live so far out in the suburbs, away from public transportiation", etc. Or more likely "Well I can probably get by without an SUV or minivan for my kids". I suspect only until $6.00, $7.00 will we begin to see real change and impact to our landscapes though.

The mania for giant cars and houses baffles me.  I was raised in a tiny house and had a happy childhood for the most part.  Once I was a teen I was a real dirtbag for awhile but that wasn't because I had to share a room with my brother for farg sake.  It was because I was a teenage icehole.  WTF people gotta have the giant car and house, I simply don't get.

We badly need an interurban high-speed railway. Airline costs are going to continue to climb. Rail is by far the most efficient form of travel. Amtrak is a joke. It runs on outdated rails that the freight companies own, and outside of the east coast it frequently has to pull over to let freight trains go by. Insane. Meanwhile, this is what competent governments have been up to...

Its a biggest dick contest. Mines bigger.

The hilarious part is that even though the average home size was growing, the price per square foot was growing even faster.  People still thought there wasn't going to be a big bubble.  Idiots.

The auto industry has been farged sideways for years now, so you can't blame the automakers for finding whatever way they can to make profit.  Blame dumbasses for driving more car than they need.

But I can blame the auto makers for having vehicles with decreasing average MPG's over the last 20 years, while all other technology has gotten stronger, better, faster.
