I wonder how many times Cruz's father was called a dirty spic by Republicans when arrived from Cuba?

Democrats like Harry Truman, FDR & Kennedy pushed for civil rights.  Truman integrated the armed forces at tremendous personal political risk.   Every meaningful bit of progress in civil liberties has been fostered by Democrats while the Rethuglican scum in this country does everything in its power to halt progress and turn Americans against each other.

I know you're just stirring the pot, but I'm in no mood for that bullshtein tonight.

I have an intense dislike for Cruz

Trying to find the article I read on him yesterday that pretty much takes him to task on just about everything

I think what Dio is trying to say is that from the nation's founding until Nixon's southern strategy, the southern KKK rednecks were much more closely aligned with the Democratic Party. Now they are with the Republicans. I'm sure it'll flip again someday. The parties don't stand for anything eternal, man.

Also, I'd take FDR, builder of racist concentration camps on American soil, off your list of civil rights Democrats next time. Throw in MLK or someone like that.

The split between the southern, conservative Democrats and the more liberal northern democrats began in the late 1800s, with differences in how to address monopolies, coinage of silver and employer rights vs. employee rights.  It intensified with FDR's New Deal, and the separation was made permanent with LBJ's Great Society and Civil Rights Acts.

There were lots of racism in the Democratic presidents of the early-to-mid 20th century.  Wilson (often considered the first modern "progressive" president) screened D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation in the White House, and reintroduced segregation in the Federal government that had been gone for some time.  Truman was known to use racist language in casual conversation, as was LBJ.  The KKK was intertwined with local, heavily Democratic, government in the South.

This isn't to judge the Democratic Party, for there was (and is) plenty of racism in the GOP as well.  Then, as now, both parties' primary concern was being elected, and both have shifted views on various issues, including race, in that quest to win elections.

Compromise of 1877 to be exact.  Republicans stole the election from Samuel Tilden, a Democrat.  It took African Americans 75+ years to recoup any "gains" made from Reconstruction, and the South is still ass backwards because of a corrupt election from 139 years ago.

I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too,
I had my pointless point of view,
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.
