But that wasn't enough. The federal agents then claimed that their court order required me to surrender my company's private encryption keys, and I balked. This is the way the law works, this isn't something new. The police have to have probable cause, they can't just search your car because they feel like it. 'Probable cause' is they just saw you buy drugs, they see drugs out in the open, there's a strong odor etc.

The split-decision from the Supreme Court allows police to conduct searches of cars based only on probable cause — that is, as long as the officers conducting the search have a reason to believe there are illegal goods or evidence of a crime hidden inside the vehicle.

Writing for the majority in the 4-2 ruling, Justice Seamus McCaffery said requiring police to have probable cause for a search is "a strong and sufficient safeguard against illegal searches," and brings state law in line with federal law allowing warrantless searches of vehicles.

Yeah PC is open for interpretation by the police. And I'm one who respects the coppers for the jobs they have to do.

Get pulled over and the cop decided he wants to search your car. He asks and you decline. He then "suddenly" smells that highly illegal Mary Jane and voila there's his PC. Nevermind that you're clean as a whistle and have nothing in your ride. He will justify that search.

It's a bullshtein invasion of privacy and it amazes me that people shrug their shoulders at that sort of lunacy.  farg you, Cop.  I'm not opening anything for you.  You want to arrest me, impound my vehicle, obtain a warrant and then search it?  Fine.  See you in civil court, icehole.

You're all wrong but I love the paranoia. If you're going over the speed limit that isn't probable cause...neither is 'because they feel like it'. Everyone has a recording device now, if cops search your shtein just to farg with you it won't fly. If they search youd shtein without pribable cause and fond something youll most likely get off unless its a serious offense. My buddy is a Philly cop and they've been subject to disciplinary action for illegal searches. Recording devices are your best friend in this situation. Most cop cars come equipped with dash cams now so they can't just farg with you because they're having a bad day.

Yeah, simply put, just continually ask them the reason why they feel they have the right to search.  If they cant produce a credible reason, and still go thru with it, Booom out on a technicality even if they find the straw guns that IGY purchased in GA.  More or less, it's always been the law, and most cops don't understand how it works so they just go with their gut.
